The hype surrounding this restaurant is well deserved. The sushi is unlike anything else on the planet except possibly for Jiro's sushi in Tokyo, from which Nakazawa got his training. Every aspect was fantastic, including the service and the saki pairings For a meal of this quality the price was not out of line, but it is not inexpensive. Dinner for two with saki pairing for one and tip was over $400.

An interesting presentation of sushi served over 8 courses. Each had a unique and special taste which differs from the usual Sushi that you get, living up to the expectation a disciple of Chef Jiro. Particularly loved the Tuna Belly and the shrimp. Had our mean in the Dining-room and the experience was unfortunately not too pleasant. Room was small and with poor noise management, have a few loud guests who laugh their heads off over the smallest thing, and you can imagine the volume of noise we had throughout the meal. Service was prompt, but the sushi explanation was a little too soft in that noisy environment. Worth a visit if you are a keen fan of Sushi, otherwise, at this price, there are much better options elsewhere.

I've eaten a lot of sushi and unfortunately, since eating at Nakazawa's, none of my regular haunts seem to please me anymore. When you dine at Nakazawa's it is a culmination if experience, ambiance, and carefully prepared sushi that you won't find anywhere else.

Bar none. Nakazawa's training under Jiro could not be more apparent, ranging from the diversity of fish served; the quality of each piece; and the combination of flavors, textures, and styles. Truly an amazing restaurant with simple, elegant decorations. Absolutely worth the wait for the reservation and I hope to be back again soon!

  • 4 stars, when price is considered
    Khooy
    Dined on 8/23/2014
how can it be that 5 stars for food, 5 stars for service, and 5 stars for ambiance equals 4 stars overall? Easy: for about $200 a person, the experience has to be more special than it was. Dinner was more like supper, a meal for fuel and pleasure, but spare...and not particularly memorable. I am glad I tried this, but the price was overwhelming

Great sushi is my greatest food pleasure. I'm a huge fan and have been for over 20 years (though can no longer afford it) of kurumazushi. Masa is a treat, Sasabune is a go to place and sushi Azabu is underrated and excellent. My wife and I were excited to be trying Nakazawa. What a disappointment! The fish was average, the rice on the cold side, and when the 20 courses were over, we ordered a few additional items that cost us well over an additional $100. The wine/sake list was outrageously expensive. We were unable to secure a sushi bar reservation, despite going on open table seconds after midnight, exactly 30 days prior to the desired day. It felt like a way over priced, hustle. Would not return.

The sushi was good but not spectacular. It was good quality and a large variety of fish but nothing was outstanding or memorable. There are many other high end spots in the city to get your sushi fill. The sake tasting was excellent and I would come back here for a glass if that was an option without the omakase.

It honestly was the best sushi i ever had. I love sushi, but no soy sauce?? Really??? ... Then you pop that first piece into your mouth and. ¡¡¡POW!!! U now know why there's no soy sauce... The only issue i had was that for $400 (2 X omakase, 2 X $40 saki pairing, tax and tip), you're starving at the end. We had to stop for a gyro on the walk home. Hint to restaurant: if u offer a more substantial dessert (like the crepe cake at ippudo) we would have been full enough to not care... Also, the 2 servers in the dining room were as much of an experience as the food. Not everyday do you get to slowly savor your food whilst a perfectly voiced pretty woman describes what you're eating. Classic. Even the tamago was divine..and i hate tamago...

Place has been on my to do list since it opened, but used to be nigh impossible to get reservations for. Still requires a fair amount of planning, but much more accessible now. Did this with another friend who loves sushi and overall, had a fun experience, but didn't feel that out of the ordinary. Of the 20 pieces, there were 2 that I could have lived without, but that my friend loved, so it's just a matter of taste. Similarly, a piece she did not care at all for I thought was exquisite so just a matter of palate, not a bad fish/preparation. There were another 3 or so pieces that were unspectacular, which leaves 15 pieces that range from very good to brilliant. Certainly a fun experience for sushi lovers, I did not find it revelatory.

First and foremost, the sushi is exquisite. Nakazawa is worth every penny. Parties larger than 2 have to sit in the dining room, but if you can, I would highly recommend sitting at the counter. I have some quibbles with the service, though. The dining room is fairly loud, but the servers speak very quietly. It's often difficult to hear them when they are describing the food they put in front of you. The waiter we had in the beginning didn't seem to know the wine and sake list well. When I asked for a recommendation on wine by the glass, he said "either of them is good." Either? There were at least 6 options. I was left to randomly choose one. Is there no sommelier to step in and give recommendations?

I made this reservation having heard many great things about Sushi Nakazawa and I was not disappointed. A wonderful omakase journey of, mostly, excellent quality and flavours. Highlights included the delicious variety of tuna, delightful scallop and powerful uni gunkan. However, my first experiences of barrelfish and tilefish were less memorable and a plate pairing unagi with the chef's signature egg custard was not to my taste. The premium sake pairing was very well constructed and also delicious. While the dining room may not have the same atmosphere as the sushi bar, I feel it is best for a more intimate experience as you are not sharing your table with other diners. Service was nothing short of impeccable throughout the evening.

The sushi was very good. That is all you get except for a very good desert at the end. Ginga Kogen was one of the best beers I have ever tasted but it was $15 for a 10.1 ounce bottle. All ingredients are top notch. Approximately 24 hours before our reservation we received an e mail that the main chef does not work on Saturdays so if you are paying the $30 extra to be at the sushi bar you should be aware.

With a high price comes high expectations. Sushi Nakazawa did not disappoint. All of the ingredients were fresh and clean. I especially liked the smoked variety of sushi. The 20-piece set omakase is well worth the $120 prix fixe. Be aware it doesn't contain 'extras' you find in ordinary US Japanese restaurants: no soup or salad, no wasabi or soy sauce, because each pristine piece of nigiri comes pre-seasoned as the chef deems necessary. But such sushi! Impeccably fresh, served in carefully paired flights so you can compare the taste and texture of, say, American and Japanese salmon, or geoduck vs. scallop. I'm not a fan of uni, but this was served with a dusting of black truffle salt that elevated it to exquisite. There's no printed food menu, just an excellent sake list. Complimentary yuzu sorbet was the perfect light ending. Service is exemplary. The only comparable place in the US is Naoe, in Miami.

First, if you have to go, try to get the bar because the dining area sucks. There is no sound absorbing interior or whatsoever so the noise is amplified, while as a sashimi obsessed I would expect a quieter and calmer atmosphere for an allegedly premium sushi place, esp. with such price and the level of pretentiousness. Secondly, the omakase was disappointing. Every single piece had lost its own natural flavor. All the flavors I remember are: yuzu, lemon, and smokiness. Of course they kept uni & ikura classic, but even they didn't feel as fresh as ones at cheaper japanese-run places (personally). Also I felt the waiter's explanations were out of memorization rather than real understanding of the food. Third, sake in a wine glass.. -The End.

This is for those who like sushi at it's purest - this is not somewhere you go for unique sauces or interesting combinations of foods - however, this is pure sushi at it's best. Best omakase in NYC. Each dish is prepared by nakazawa and his team and is prepared with the slight sauce they want you to try with each fish. nakazawa comes out himself and talks with you - a very nice touch!

We sat in the dining room. Noise levels vary, depending on table sizes, etc. With that said, this was a pretty underwhelming sushi experience. The service was very attentive (despite what other reviewers have said), so they are at least learning on that front. The sushi itself was just ho hum. Very few pieces were "special" or something you'd want to eat over and over and over again. Since it's an omakase, we expected to have our comfort zone tested a bit, and there was a little of that, it just didn't resonate with us. This place has an image of exclusivity to it which keeps people clamoring to get in. I wonder how many people are repeat customers. There are comparable options in NYC that are easier to get in to.

I was disappointed I couldn't get a reservation at the sushi bar, but I'll take what I can get! 20 pieces of sushi (two to three at a time) came: a mix of shrimp, tuna, salmon, mackerel, and others. Some individual pieces I've had better elsewhere (say the uni) but others were the best I've had. Overall a great dining experience. I'll be back for more!
