A word from Sushi Ko - Chevy Chase
The Sushi Ko food philosophy is Cuisine of Subtraction. According to Creative Director Daisuke Utagawa, subtraction allows chefs to reveal the essence of each ingredient in it's most honest yet refined state. By subtly combining other ingredients, a taste sensation is created that demonstrates the complexity and beauty of nature for the eye and the palate. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Our server, Alicia, was delightful, down-to-earth and responsive. The overall experience, however, did not meet expectations. Our food was late in coming out, the restaurant was too noisy (due in no small part to a large party of kids in the main room); and everything ordered (Sushi Rolls, Jo Sushi, Tempura) was just ok, not noteworthy, memorable or exceptional. I couldn't help but wonder whether the restaurant fails to receive fresh fish deliveries on Sundays (when we were there). I do not want to pan the restaurant. I have been there many times before and keep coming back. But it does not consistently excel as it could/should (at least not on this Sunday night). By contrast, the Raku restaurant in Bethesda always exceeds expectations."

  • "Loved the special tuna tartare with black truffles and caviar. Delicious! The special Escolar (butter fish) was also a real treat. Not a single dish missed the mark. Only complaint is that I don't like to be seated in the far back room where it is always dark."

  • "I understand that this restaurant was sold and now has a new owner - if so it would explain a lot of our somewhat disappointing experience. If not, I am mystified at how things have changed so dramatically for the worse. Food prices are extremely high for the small portions. For example, the Flounder in truffle sauce was five paper thin small slices @$17. They were very flavorful, but not a very good value! The Nigiri was a nice selection but the prices were high, especially for the specials of the day which were $4-7 for a SINGLE piece. The fish quality was excellent. There was no rice served with the Sashimi. The tab for 2 was $86 and the noise level was deafening. I will not be back."

  • "We had a great experience at Sushiko, as we always have. This time we skipped sushi and had some specialties: fried panko oysters, yellowtail sashimi with yuzu, ponzu, and serrano peppers, grilled rockfish with wild mushrooms and edamame puree, and the salad of smoked salmon, spinach, and asparagus, and the tuna tatare. Everything was simply perfect."

  • "We just asked Chefs Peter and Handry to prepare whatever they felt like making. They're like jazz musicians -- they improvise with whatever they think is best, and it's phenomenal!"

  • "I had never been to this restaurant. But I had high hopes as it has a reputation as a very good Japanese restaurant. WSe basically ordered 2 categories of food: sashimi assortment which was very tasty, but I felt kind of meager for the price. We also ordered 2 different sushi rolls, which tasted alike, pretty much ofthe rice and wasabi and ginger and soy sauce, and were not at all distinctive. The waitress was very nice and accommodating."

  • "I'm not sure what happened tonight. I always get the chicken teriyaki, but tonight it was terrible. Filled with gristle. They have taken the room next door and tried seating us there first. We were alone and freezing so we asked to be moved. They did."

  • "Overall, the portions of this once great sushi spot have shrunken, miso soup costs extra, and there wasn't even a little salad included with the entree. The sushi assortment (fish, not vegetarian) looked like an appetizer: every piece of sushi was miniaturized. A few of our favorite menu items were no longer on the menu, so that was a disappointment. Tempura dishes are still good, as was the fried oyster appetizer, but it was apparent they were cutting corners. Under the bright spot lights, our dishes looked dirty before we started eating, and my beer glass had greasy fingerprints on it. Sadly, we won't return to what used to be one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "We were four, and asked Chef Handry to just prepare whatever he felt like making. We had half a dozen small plates, none of which is on the printed menu, and all were absolutely amazing. One of them was flounder fin with uni served in a small hollowed-out lemon, which we all raved about. Fabulous stuff!"

  • "We met our kids and grandkids at Sushi Ko on Sunday afternoon and we had a delightful time and meal. Our waiter Doug was very pleasant, friendly, and patient with the children. He brought them 'kids' chopsticks, which were a hit. We were celebrating our grandson's birthday and it was a special place for this since the children are just learning to enjoy sushi."

  • "Whenever my sister from San Francisco visits she wants to go out for sushi. I've visited her favorite places for sushi out there and they are amazing. Well, she loves SushiKo, says the quality and service is just as good as her places. I cannot think of higher praise."

  • "The food and service were great! Unfortunately, the noise level was extreme; ironically, the bar area at the entrance was the quietest corner. I found the ambiance in the main room dark and cold, rather uninviting even if intended to be "chic""

  • "Chef Handry has come up with more wonders from behind the Sushi bar. Simply stunning preparations using olive powder and truffles to highlight the various delicious fish he prepared for us. Amazing stuff. The toro tartare was unreal!"

  • "We've had many 5 star dinners at Sushi Ko. Last Saturday night's was very good but just slightly below our high expectations. We loved the remarkably light and crispy veggie tempura, and my husband enjoyed his teriyaki chicken, but the toro on the specials menu tasted less than pristinely fresh, and the extra dry vodka martini lacked its usual bracing punch."

  • "Once we found the restaurant the food and drink was quite good, but the Wisconsin Ave. address led to confusion and some tromping up and down trying to find the place. The waitress, Alicia, responded extremely well, though, and before long we were enjoying our meal."

  • "We went Super Bowl Sunday, so it was not as distractingly loud as it usually is. Our waiter was superb. He was attentive, personable and knowledgeable. This waiter is a huge step up from the waiters we have had at this restaurant in the recent past. The food at Sushi Ko is always top-notch, and this time was no exception."

  • "Quite a good restaurant - attractive decor, traditional Japanese food - the acoustics however is one of the worst. Not simply overall noisy but if you are sitting near a wall (we sat in a corner next to a table for two that is against the wall) the voices from the table against the wall - especially when those diners have high pitched voices, talk loudly and didn't care to be overheard - will be so amplified that they will drown out the conversation at your own table. Extremely distracting and unpleasant. So if you are seated against a wall, better keep you voices down, and if not, go for a booth seat or table that's in the middle part of the room to avoid a situation that is sure to ruin your evening."

  • "OK...I love sashimi as much as anyone, but Chef Handry came up with a small plate with bone marrow that was sensational. My hat's off to him and to Sushiko overall. Just a phenomenal experience all around. I dine here once a week or so, always at the sushi bar, and the inventive dishes never cease to amaze me. Wow!"

  • "We used to enjoy the Glover Park location for years. Few times we tried to make the Chevy Chase location our sushi place. Unfortunately, it's not working out. Our last visit few days ago underlined one more time why not. Food quality is not at same level as at the closed Glover Park location. Our server was more than disappointing. Order was only partially delivered and only after asking about the remaining items we got a short "Ok". The person was incapable of delivering even a basic service. Who why hired him? Overall service was far from being acceptable."

  • "My husband and I went during restaurant week and had the restaurnat week menu. top quality, fresh sushi. Very attentive service. Plenty of parking in back of Saks in the large pay lot. Sushi Ko validated so parking ended up only costing $1."

  • "We had the sea-salt burikama (roasted yellowtail collar), which is amazing. Everybody loved it. Great stuff! The eel tatsuta-age was fabulous too. Love it!"

  • "The food was great and we had a nice time but my reservation couldn't be found and we didn't hear from our server for about ten minutes. They were busy but no one came to our table at all. For the cost of the good, I expect water immediately, napkins and someone at least saying they'll be there as soon as possible. Our server was very good once she showed up."

  • "There's something to be said for stressless dining -- when you can be confident that the food and service will justify your choosing that particular restaurant. Sushi-ko is such a place, and our most recent dinner was no exception. The tuna "element rolls" were especially wonderful as was the veggie tempura -- impossibly light and crispy."

  • "Superior Japanese food with original contemporary twists. Subtle flair that adds interest and great flavor, but remains on mark and doesn't obscure tradition."

  • "My husband and I decided late Friday afternoon to go out someplace nearby, and we're glad we selected Sushi Ko where we had a delicious meal. We liked our go-to starters edaname and miso soup, and then really loved the hamachi sampler with grapefruit. Very different and the flavors complimented each other. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was delicious and the full order was very generous for us to share. We finished our meal with the Element roll on their specials list, wrapped in soy paper which was an unusual and tasty way to finish the meal. Our server KoKo was friendly and attentive, but not overly so. For our date night, we enjoyed being seated in the quiet space near the sushi bar. Just what we were looking for!"

  • "Met a business associate for lunch on Polar Vortex Day (Jan 7). Service, food, atmosphere - all a 10. Walking distance from the Metro. Loved the lobster and scallop with creamy ponzu sauce hot dish. $23 pre-fix is a steal - seaweed salad, shrimp and veggie tempura and 10 piece roll. YUM!"

  • "We are long time fans of Sushi-ko - Chevy Chase and its predecessor Sushi-ko (in DC, now closed). The last two time we've visited we felt the food and service were slipping. We hope that's because people were away over the holidays, but this last time we had to send back the tea (!) because the powder had not been mixed properly and was in clumps on top. Not a good sign."

  • "We booked our new years eve dinner here with some friends because we had done it a couple of years ago and had a great time. We booked for 9:30 pm. Well....we arrived , place was almost empty. We were seated and it took server over 10 minutes to show up And ask for drink orders, which then took another 10 minutes to arrive.we ordered a bunch of small plates to share-- which also took A while to arrive. Its now 10:10 pm and we decide to order something else. The server takes the order, then comes back a few Minutes later and says-- sorry the kitchen is closed. What!! Imagine our suprise. New years eve!! Reservation at 9:30 pm. No One says its kinda late because we will close kitchen at 10!!!!. Very dissapointing evening."

  • "Very good food and service, and good ambiance can be overwhelmed by an excessive noise level created by a raucous table of eight next to tables of one and two. The lack of a side of rice with the sashimi is atypical of Japanese restaurants in the US even though it is common in Japan. There is not even the option of a side dish of rice on the menu. While the interior design is sleek, it lacks warmth. For me, ambiance requires warmth and a sense of comfort."

  • "Mo has a couple new wines that I really love and that pair really well with the Sashimi. My weekly dinner at the Sushi bar was fabulous, as always, and my guest really loved the Ankimo -- monkfish liver, which is like seafood foie gras! YUM!"

  • "It is always a treat going to Sushi Ko. In addition to making my own sushi, I've visited many around the country. This is one of the best in DC. As is the case with most sushi places, the cost is relatively low compared to other restaurants. The quality of the sushi and the atmosphere are the two main reasons I keep coming back."
