  • Kitamura-san is simply a master!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2001
    Dined on 11/19/2014
It's been a while, long enough that the wait staff have now become all non-Japanese-speakers (the first guy had never heard of Kirin beer and didn't know what o-shibori meant. I have been wanting to visit more often again, missing the experience (just as I miss Japan). The food has gotten even better, if that is possible! Kitamura-san is inventive, attentive, thoughtful and adventuresome as a chef, and consistently affable as a host. An outstanding rival to anyone in Tokyo or Kyoto! Just put yourself in his hands (literally) and you will feast. Your senses will be surprised and treated, even if you've been eating sashimi and sushi for decades. You will pay handsomely, but in Seattle where prices are high even when quality isn't, Sushi Kappo Tamura stands a head above most chef-owned restaurants.

  • Great Food, Room for Improvement in Service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2009
    Dined on 11/19/2014
Some of the best sushi in Seattle. Service was off however. Our server seemed to be lacking peripheral vision: taking only one or two drink orders before moving away from the table, leaving several thirsty guests hanging. Then, an inordinate amount of time (judging on how busy the place was) would pass before the server would return to take another one or two drink orders. To be fair, we were a large group of 11, being tuned into verbal cues and body language of your diners is Service 101. Service is everything in a city like Seattle---with so many restaurants serving great food---if you're service is lacking, you won't make it.

We went there for my husband's birthday and had the Omakase menu. This is where the chef makes multiple courses based on what seasonal and fresh ingredients they have... We eat whatever is made and every dish that came out was a surprise... Pleasant surprise, mind you. True dining experience where we took time to eat and not just rush through a meal. After having had some amazing food while traveling in Japan, we were happy to experience such delicious Japanese cuisine so close to home that is not your regular sushi or teriyaki dish!

I was so looking forward to sushi at kappo tamura and was sorely disappointed and after I paid the check voted to cross this place off the list. The food was average, at best, fish selection was unexciting, downright boring, at stellar prices, and the place was sparsely populated on a Friday night. Seasonal fresh fish is all I'm looking for... Bye bye...no lookin' back....sayonara

We got dessert because it was Restaurant Week and it was included. I'm glad we did because the Yuzu yogurt panna cotta was sublime. We found the appetizers to be merely so-so, the sushi and wagyu beef were good but not outstanding, but the panna cotta was amazing. The ambience is fabulous; so Japanese!

It is like they are pulling the fish from the ocean just from you. Perfect perfection in each bite. We went for Restaurant Week and enjoyed each course including the oysters and mochi which my date had never had before. Best date restaurant. Staff was attentive without being intrusive. Loved how a sake pairing was available with the restaurant week menu. Might go back for the tasting course. Well worth the drive from Tacoma. It is the best sushi I have had in Seattle

Revisited Sushi Kappo Tamura after a two year lapse. I'm happy to report that the customer service and food quality remained consistent and excellent. One of my dining companions had dietary requirements and they were happy to accommodate. Both of my dining companions had not visited before and were very impressed and looked forward to returning and bringing other family members. My wife and I ordered the "Omakase" course, where the Chef serves the day's best, seemingly catered perfectly to your taste! From the Kumamoto Oyster & savory stewed snapper head to the Sushi course that crescendos delicately to the Ikura & Uni (& who can forget the chestnut creme brûlée), it was stellar!

I truly dislike leaving negative reviews. Sadly I have to say I did not like the service of this place. Our server was not doing her job. Several times I had to ask for her to refill my water. And she would never check to see if we needed anything else...like dessert. The food is a bit pricey so I would expect to recieve good service. The sushi is fresh and the place is small and cute. Not very impressed with the menu.

Great food, very cool ambience, the music really sets a romantic and personal mood, as well as the decoration and lighting. Dinner hours are usually busy, afternoon hours were moderate, I'm sure it's busier on weekends too. Wait staff was accommodating, but gave my girlfriend and I space to enjoy the meal and our time together. I really would have liked to sit at the bar, I hear it's the complete experience at this place if you get bar seats. Bathrooms were clean and surprisingly well decorated.

A very busy and skilled staff are friendly and accommodating. The room itself is very well set up with the sushi bar right there in front of the chefs. The decor is simple and clean with a modern american feel and a lot of pretty stained fir about and large windows for veiwing. Their house saki is also the right combination of smooth with just enough bite. The price is higher than most, but is justified by the quality, and perfect for special occasions.

Sushi Kappo Tamura is the best sushi I've had since visiting Japan. The sashimi is fresh and melts in your mouth. The best thing about it is that 90% of their fish is locally sourced from Washington so its sustainable which is rare among sushi restaurants. The chawanmushi was also delish and rich. I took my parents out for dinner here. They are very picky about their sushi (as am I). We all agreed it was the best sushi we have had in Seattle. The rice was perfectly prepared. I had the Chirashi, which was amazing. The fish melted in my mouth, was very fresh, and of an excellent cut. Our server recommended a great Saki. The atmosphere was simple, yet elegant - they are not trying too hard to be hip. It was a great experience.

We reserved the sushi bar and omakase. Yes, it's expensive. Come hungry. Fantastic! On any given night, the food will vary but our evening it was: 1)Oysters on the half shell with salmon roe, 2) Alaskan crab w slices of eggplant on cold dashi broth,3) sashimi:maguro, hamachi, ebi and smelt,4) kasu-black cod w. cold green bean-miso dressing,5)bluefin, albacore, salmon, Spanish Mackerel nigiri,6)Uni, salmon row, scallop, eel sushi,7)Hazelnut and butter squash crème brulee (or choice of 2 other deserts). Great sake selection. If I had a tiny quibble it would be that the sushi rice was not as perfectly formed and moist as a master, such as Shiro. But judging from the other reviews, I'm just being overly picky or it was an off-night. GO!!!

Tamura Kappo Sushi is without doubt, the best Japanese restaurant in Seattle. The rice for the sushi is well cooked, well flavored. The egg custard and pana cotta are silky smooth and delicately flavored. The food is prepared with great finesse. I particularly enjoy the atmosphere, which is very modern, with a view of I-5 overhead, but also calm and warm with lots of wood and paper lantern lighting. A very fine restaurant.
