Using local and seasonal ingredients is the most important element in Japanese cuisine. It also has become the primary principle for the international culinary community. With commitment to that philosophy, Tamura features seasonal ingredients of the Pacific Northwest in authentic Japanese preparation.

Tamura is a Kappo style restaurant where food is prepared in an open kitchen and served quickly in a lively environment where staff and guests talk about the food and beyond. Our goal is to become the very best restaurant to our guests by getting to know them and serving them in a personable yet professional manner.

The food is delicious, and the local, sustainable ingredients, like sockeye salmon and geoduck, give this restaurant a distinctly Northwest air. We will certainly return."

  • "A very busy and skilled staff are friendly and accommodating. The room itself is very well set up with the sushi bar right there in front of the chefs. The decor is simple and clean with a modern american feel and a lot of pretty stained fir about and large windows for veiwing. Their house saki is also the right combination of smooth with just enough bite. The price is higher than most, but is justified by the quality, and perfect for special occasions."

  • "Sushi Kappo Tamura is the best sushi I've had since visiting Japan. The sashimi is fresh and melts in your mouth. The best thing about it is that 90% of their fish is locally sourced from Washington so its sustainable which is rare among sushi restaurants. The chawanmushi was also delish and rich. I highly recommend this place for sushi aficionados!!"

  • "I took my parents out for dinner here. They are very picky about their sushi (as am I). We all agreed it was the best sushi we have had in Seattle. The rice was perfectly prepared. I had the Chirashi, which was amazing. The fish melted in my mouth, was very fresh, and of an excellent cut. Our server recommended a great Saki. The atmosphere was simple, yet elegant - they are not trying too hard to be hip. It was a great experience."

  • "We reserved the sushi bar and omakase. Yes, it's expensive. Come hungry. Fantastic! On any given night, the food will vary but our evening it was: 1)Oysters on the half shell with salmon roe, 2) Alaskan crab w slices of eggplant on cold dashi broth,3) sashimi:maguro, hamachi, ebi and smelt,4) kasu-black cod w. cold green bean-miso dressing,5)bluefin, albacore, salmon, Spanish Mackerel nigiri,6)Uni, salmon row, scallop, eel sushi,7)Hazelnut and butter squash crème brulee (or choice of 2 other deserts). Great sake selection. If I had a tiny quibble it would be that the sushi rice was not as perfectly formed and moist as a master, such as Shiro. But judging from the other reviews, I'm just being overly picky or it was an off-night. GO!!!"

  • "Tamura Kappo Sushi is without doubt, the best Japanese restaurant in Seattle. The rice for the sushi is well cooked, well flavored. The egg custard and pana cotta are silky smooth and delicately flavored. The food is prepared with great finesse. I particularly enjoy the atmosphere, which is very modern, with a view of I-5 overhead, but also calm and warm with lots of wood and paper lantern lighting. A very fine restaurant."

We were greeted in a very friendly way and seated promptly. Our geoduck sauté ippin was outstanding and the nigiri was as good as I have ever had - even living in Japan for two years! Service was impeccable! Highly recommended!"

  • "Superb fresh sushi with a local flavor. The chanwanmushi with Dungeness crab was outstanding: silky egg custard studded with tender seafood and a smoky dashi undertone. The razor clams were sweet, briny and tender. The herring was a revelation, not too fishy, but rich and flavorful, cut with just a touch of grated ginger. The Seattle roll was very tasty, with fresh wild salmon and avocado; if only the salmon had been left in bigger pieces instead of being so finely chopped that the texture was too soft. But the King salmon sushi was very good. A sake flight went perfectly with the meal; with just 3 small glasses, though, I needed more to slake my thirst; fortunately, refills on the hot green tea were free :)"

The food is INCREDIBLE and all the chefs, servers and hostesses treat you as a VIP whenever you go. The food definitely includes details about where the fish comes from with a focus on fish from the northwest - but doesn't push it as the "trendy" thing to do as seems the case with so many restaurants as of late. If there's a sushi place to go to for locals or out of towners who want to experience the best sushi the northwest can offer, this is THE PLACE to go!"

  • "Based on reviews, we gave Tamura a try. This is more of a classic sushi restaurant similar to Shiro. The quality of the fish was excellent and the price was quite reasonable especially for the rolls. The rolls were small, 6-8 pieces in each and not very big but still delicious. One of the more creative dishes was the mustard greens with tuna - YUMMY. Definitely a highlight! They don't have a waiting area so if you need to grab a drink, go to Ravish next door. AMAZING cocktails, great staff. We had a drink before Tamura with an appetizers - the best steak skewers ever. We returned afterwards for dessert - amazing bread pudding. Two great restaurants!"
