  • Nothing special, mediocre at best.

    Dined on 1/26/2014
Food was an overall miss, nothing special. Shrimp wonton soup tasted like plain boiled water, no flavor. What was listed on the menu as "Sizzling fish" was served lukewarm on a cold white plate. The ribs were good and on temperature. The pork fried rice was lukewarm and bland, but tasted ok. The crab balls were bland and flavorless and were likely imitation crab. We would NOT return in a hurry. There are much better and more consistent Asian restaurants at which to spend your money. The service was spotty, as we had to often seek out our waitress, but she was pleasant enough. Overall we would NOT recommend and we did NOT get good value for what we spent, which was about $100 for 2 people for mediocre food and service.

Made to wait over half an hour for our seating and then virtually ignored by waiter when we sat down. After finally ordering drinks, took 20 minutes and my complaining to get drink brought to me. very poor customer service for an expensive restaurant. Would not recommend. Much better options available.

Susanna Foo always has excellent food. I go 3 to 4 times a year. This visit, however, was very disappointing. Here are my grumps; 1) the hostess bathed in her perfume that was over bearing to the food 2) we never saw our server again after the main course was served. So unfortunate for a 50th birthday celebration.

We ordered a glass of wine, which was served after a longish wait despite the fact that the restuarant was virually empty at 7 PM on a Saturday evening, and then tried to discuss with the waiter what my wife, who has some allergies, could eat. The waiter was stunningly unhelpful -- and we ended up having to walk out since it seemed that my wife would not be able to eat anything even though we'd eaten there before (after paying for our wine, of course, for which the waiter quickly presented a bill!). (see continuation below). The waiter pretty much said, in response to our request that he ask the chef what my wife could eat, "no asian food" at this Asian restaurant. We even asked if the chef or maitre d' could come over, and he said "no"!!!

  • Expected Much More...

    Dined on 12/31/2013
I expected much more from this restaurant in terms of service and food. I have dined there before with a large group so I was not focused on service so much the first time. Second experience was just small plates in the bar and it was very good and I was pleased sitting at the bar tables and comfy seats. This past New Years Eve experience was disappointing in terms of service. When we walked in the 2 girls at the hostess stand did not even acknowledge us. I had to say hello to them to get their attention. We said our name and she said ok then turned around. I said "what does that mean? How long with it be for our table?" She replied, "oh, I don't know.." I had to ask her if we should wait there or go to bar? Staff needs training.

Although our food was tasty, service was so discourteous and unprofessional that it ruined our evening. Our waiter began by exclaiming "What" when we sat down. He couldn't be bothered to take our order, bring cutlery, pour a beer or bring dessert menus. We told the manager (after waiting a considerable time to speak with him) that we were dissatisfied. He said, "Sorry we're busy". Although we understand 12/31 is a frantic night for restaurants, he offered no accommodation or solution. How about "Sorry you're having this experience, here's a certificate to come back and try us again another night?" He simply didn't care. We were charged 20% service, although this was not indicated on the menu. Rude beyond belief. We will not be back ever.

First of all I want to say, that we have been to the restaurant many times over the years and were always happy. But this special New Year Eve Celebration was quiet a disaster! We invited a couple of friends to celebrate this special day. But, boy was I embarrassed! The pre-advertised menu was different from the menu at the restaurant and certainly different from the food we got. It took an astonishing long time to order our food and even a longer time to get it! We never expected such unorganized and chaotic evening. Susanna Foo has been a quiet respectable address in the Philadelphia restaurant scene for many years. As we have been customers for many years. We certainly hope this was an exception and not the downturn of a good restaurant.

As one of the few restaurants open on Christmas night, Susanna Foo deserves credit for handling the crowd and serving very good food. The service staff was excellent. However, the restaurant did overbook and we ended sitting in the bar rather than waiting the 45 minutes for our reservation. And the bar was FREEZING! The front door opens directly to a reception area next to the bar. The poor hostess was freezing, as was one of our guests -- and were many of the patrons. A simple curtain- or double-door system would cure this problem.

And still a very good place to eat. Holiday dining always seems difficult for the restaurant. It's crowded with many first time diners who may be unfamiliar with a place. Susanna Foo handles things nicely. I can't say that about the drinks though. 2 Virgin Mary's for my wife and I brought us 2 tomato juices with not a trace of hot sauce and no fruit at all - not even 1 little olive. Also, they were $9 each. The meal though was excellent. Fish in an oriental restaurant is always an excellent choice. My wife had a nice piece of Cod and I had a whole trout, deboned and stuffed with crabmeat. Very good - and only 2 extraneous bones found. Desert was excellent also and our waiter was very friendly and accommodating.

Although a nice ambiance, on a busy Holiday time week night (couldn't get in in a few other places for our party) Susannah Foos was very quite. While the staff was nice, and the interior still very nice, the food was not great. I was not food of their version of one of my favorites (Kung Pao), although others raved about, among other things, the Lobster Fried Rice.

My husband and I have been intending to return to Susanna Foo's for some time and finally did for his Birthday. We love the bar, drinks were good and we did not wait for our reservation. We had calamari and sushi for appetizers - delicious! The braised lamb shank and crispy duck were superb. We would return in a heartbeat. Portions were adequate, not too large, which appeals to me. As a "regular" there's not much to add to old reviews, since Suzanna Foo's is an exceptional place. The only comment on this visit was that we were pleasantly surprised at how very busy the place was on a Tuesday night. Suzanna commented that she had several large parties thus the busy place. I tried the Lychee martini then we ordered the handcrafted dumpling sampler, Ahi Tuna platter and Shrimp Wonton Noodle soup. The dumpling sampler was to die for! You get to try pork, lamb, vegetable, shrimp and wild mushroom-chicken dumplings. For the entrees, I had the wok seared diver scallops, prawn and wild Scottish salmon and my boyfriend had the lobster risotto. The portion sizes are perfect, the wait staff is very attentive and the décor of the place has a swanky, modern and high-end appeal. To top off the evening, we had the chocolate sampler for dessert and took home a slice of the mango cheesecake which was divine.

Had the filet for dinner and my husband and I shared the calamari and Asian salad for starters which were both excellent. Service was just ok. Felt that the waiter was a bit oblivious to us and if we switched out ourselves at our table with another couple he would not have noticed. Definitely would recommend and go back but hope for another waiter next time!

This was my third visit in recent weeks after a hiatus of about 2 years and I must say I'm impressed with what I see as real improvement in Susanna Foo's. The food seems to be more consistent in its preparation and presentation, but I think the biggest improvement has been in the service. All of our servers have gone out of their way to be helpful and unobtrusively attentive, and even the hostesses have been more professional and efficient than I remember. All in all, I think the whole operation has been upgraded.

When you enter Susanna Foo's restaurant you see on the wall an award she received from the James Beard Foundation, and all I can say is that this restaurant is not the same Susanna Foo that was once on Walnut St. in Philadelphia. We started the dinner with a glass of merlot which was undrinkable. The food was bland, and overpriced. Many other Chinese restaurants in Philadelphia and the Main Line do it much better. This restaurant is an embarrassment. Susanna Foo you used to be wonderful - what happened?
