Sunset Terrace - Grove Park InnHad lunch with an online reservatioHad lunch with an online reservation. Upon arrival the reception staff told us work was taking place jioning the Treeace. The noise level was moderate but not enough to cause us to decline after a 100 mile drive. At times the paint odor did distract from the food.
I am surprised that Open Table was not aware of this at the time I made the reservation. I am also surprised that the Grove Park Inn web site did not have a notice about the construction.
Maby telephone reservations are not out of date afterall.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThe View, alone, makes it a must. The view is spectacular. The service is also top-notch. The terrace is somewhat crowded & all the building construction is a minus. The food is above average. Overall, the positives far outweigh any drawbacks.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMA huge improvementWe noticed a huge improvement in the quality of the food. Menu was much better than when we previously ate there. We would recommend eating there now. Since we had reservations for lunch it seems like we should.not have to pay for parking.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat night on the Sunset Terrace!Went to the Sunset Terrace with a group of girls to celebrate one dear friend's birthday. Everything was wonderful! Food was great, server was sweet & attentive, and the scenery was beautiful... a great place to celebrate a special occasion!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMRepeat customerAs always- theis place does not disappoint. Food stellar. Views stellar. Wait staff stellar.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMSunset Terrace recently remodeledBeautiful restaurant, spectacular view from the terrace.... Waiters couldn't have been more helpful.... We'll definitely be back.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat atmosphere, but richWe loved the atmosphere, view and service. The food was very good, but most of it was very rich with lots of duck fat references, and used plenty of butter and salt. Too rich for us, and few choices of things to eat that did not have cheese or duck fat. We have dined here before, but the menu has changed considerably with much higher prices than before. There were less of the signature or chef special dishes to choose from, and most of the menu items are fairly common items like basic steaks and fish filets, and sides like mac&cheese, baked potato, fries (cooked in duck fat), etc. We did find a nice tomatoe salad and a side of spinach, and the filet was delicious. Perhaps the menu is trying to reflect days of old, but with big prices.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMconstruction woesWe love coming to the Grove Park Inn. I was not happy that the the Mgmt did not tell us about the potential noise from construction. We might have chosen a different restaurant in the hotel. Despite this we had a great time with our friends and will return again.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMPricey but good food. EntreesPricey but good food. Entrees no longer come with sides. Be aware that an 18% gratuity will be automatically added to your bill regardless of the number in your party. I have a suspicion that the wait staff don't get all of that.
Also be aware that the hotel is a massive construction zone. They are remodeling extensively and it appears this will continue for several more months.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was excellent - bestThe food was excellent - best steak we have ever had.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMAttention to DetailMonday night, June 3rd, I took my boyfriend out for his 32nd birthday. The hostesses and servers paid great attention to my requests I made for the reservation. The spring mix flowers were gorgeous. Katia was our server. She was a delight. Loved her accent. Always checked up on us but not too much where it got awkward. She knew we were attempting a romantic dinner with the most amazing mountain view. The food was great but not outstanding. Overpriced, really. I paid $48 for a filet mignon. I've had better at Texas de Brazil. Nonetheless, it was worth it for the view. We are leaving Asheville for flat Texas at the end if this month so to me it was well worth the price and to see the tears of happiness on my bf's face.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AM12th Wedding AnniverseryWe travelled from our home in Spartanburg, SC to celebrate our 12th Anniversery for part of the afternoon and dinner early that evening. We had stayed for a weekend a year earlier and enjoyed ourselves and remembered how much we were impressed with the Terrace experience. Again, we can only say how much we enjoyed the view, the food and the service, it was perhaps the best we ever had or at least rates amoung the best. We look forward to doing this again.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazingThe view is stunning, the food was delicious, and the staff was friendly. Amazing.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMUnsurpassed atmospherethe grove park inn sets the standard in western NC for luxury and quality and the sunset terrace is the top of the line dining at a top notch hotel. the views are unsurpassed and the atmosphere is unbeatable. the food was superb, though a little pricey.5/27/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful View! The ambience was great! The food was delicious! I chose this restaurant because of the scenic view. The dining room is analagous to a large open porch in which you are treated to a breath taken view of the mountains and green pastures. A very romantic environment!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect in every wayview of the mountains from this terrace is awe-inspiring; food is deliciously and elegantly prepared and presented.
Get the Roasted beet/goat cheese appetizer. It is outstanding. Everything was perfectly presented. The chef stops by to check on how things are.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThe BestSunset Terrace is one of the best dining experiences of my life, if not the best.. The evening was about as close to perfect as possible, including very pleasant weather. The scenery to look out upon the mountains was beyond description in beauty. The staff was efficient, kind and wonderful at their tasks. In regards to the food, it was delicious to the eyes and taste. Eating there was a delightful and relaxing experience. I enjoyed every moment! Many thanks to the people who made it possible, most of all God who made all possible.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGrove Park for Anniversary DinnerGreat food - I had the steak and the wife had lobster. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The show was stolen by the view, though - couldn't be more beautiful, overlooking Asheville and the Smokies. The wedding reception in a different wing of the inn was a bit noisy, but overall we had a great experience.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent service food with a viewEnjoyed our lunch with beautiful view and great weather.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMthe whole experience was lovelythe whole experience was lovely from the food, to the scenery, to the graciousness of the staff. We appreciated the warm welcome from the executive chef, too.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, stunning backdropWe decided to have lunch on the terrace of Grove Park Inn. The setting and backdrop were simply fantastic. I can imagine what the sunsets are like from this location. The service was great and food was good (although way too much food for a normal person - the burger I had was 10 oz and I barely ate half of it). The Inn is currently undergoing many renovations, so the noise level from construction was a bit annoying, but we understood the inconvenience.
Overall, a nice lunch and we were able to mill around the area afterwards and enjoyed our visit.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMMagnificent ViewThe view from the terrace is the big draw for this restaurant. It was Memorial Day weekend when we were there; hence, it was quite busy. Nevertheless the staff was attentive and courteous. The food was well prepared, the wine list appropriate- that is it was not monstrous with expensive wines. Overall a very pleasant evening.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMA Very Happy Birthday DinnerMy husband and I had reservations for my birthday at 7:30 which allowed for us to see the sunset. The view was absolutely gorgeous! He had the trout (which he had already picked out, despite knowing if it was on the menu) and I had the scallops. Everything was fabulous! We consider ourselves foodies and really enjoyed everything about the meal.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMMemorable MealWe took visiting friends to lunch to enjoy their first visit to Asheville. The Sunset Terrance was the perfect place to introduce them to one of the most memorable places to see in Asheville AND enjoy an incredible meal. Even the intense passing rain storm did not dampen the experience, but actually heightened it. The view from the Terrance is always wonderful but with a storm approaching it was unbelievably beautiful.
The food was superb....as always, and the service was helpful, entertaining, and part of the enjoyable experience. Congratulations for making us look like brilliant hosts.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food, service and view/The food, service and view/ ambience were all very good. What a gorgeous day! The only disadvantage is that it is in a large resort so you have to contend with resort/ hotel/ convention guests. Other than that, it is an excellent venue and very historical!5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat DInner experienceFood was excellent. View was gorgeous. The staff was good too - all around a very nice experience for a special occasion.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food Great viewWe were there for the view which is spectacular when nature cooperates so the minor disappointments from the food did not mar the evening. I ordered my swordfish medium and thought it was a bit over done. Though the generous portion made it possible for me to get enough while skipping the most well done part of the fillet. My husband ordered his well done and was very happy with his. The sides are sized for two so you have to agree. I found the sweet potato casserole bland underneath the marshmallows. I expected a tastier more sophisticated casserole from this class of restaurant. I would only return on a clear evening and then for a pre-dinner drink or a light lunch. For the price, I would like the food to be better.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was overpriced.. butFood was overpriced.. but I wasn't there for the food...great atmosphere..5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a TREAT!I have dined at The Sunset Terrace several times and I can say that it just gets better everytime! Our service was wonderful, food excellent and the view was unbeatable. My grandmother's maid could make biscuits that melted in your mouth, but these biscuits are.....heavenly:).5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic views!!! Adult mealsFantastic views!!! Adult meals fantastic, but Kids meals were very poor for the price!!!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMFood with a ViewThis restaurant is wonderfully located and has an excellent menu with outstanding service. We felt special from the time we entered until we finished our afterdinner drinks and desert.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome!Such a great view and great food and service. We can't wait to go again!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMNever disappointedI have been to this restaurant 4-5 times in the past two years and it never disappoints. The service and food quality is impressive. The trout and steak were cooked to perfection and the view of the mountains is breathtaking.
There were several special occassions going on (prom/wedding) and they just seemed to blend in with the others.
I will continue to make it a point to eat at this place when I visit Asheville.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMBetter than latest reviewsAfter reading all the latest reviews we considered canceling our reservation.
Glad we did not. The food was very good, only the spinach was a bit salty.
Overall great time and great service.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMMy daughter and I were celebratingMy daughter and I were celebrating her college graduation. We sat right at the porch wall, overlooking the beautiful mountain vista on a gorgeous, warm evening and watched the sun set while eating a delicious meal! Our server was professional and friendly. Perfect night!5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniversary timeWe got there early, but they were able to seat us right at a perfect place overlooking the valley. This is nice to be on the end, but should the stormy weather kick up a bit, no doubt we would have been wet, but the weather held and we were fine. The service was prompt, food exceeded expectations. The waitress poured the first glass of wine, but we poured the rest, for a $80 dollar bottle of wine, one would expect that little level of service.
A nice place to go for a special occasion, but be sure to bring your unfilled credit card as the meals are expensive and tip is automatically added. Oh yea, $15 to valet park to boot.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMSunset Terrace just reopenedSunset Terrace just reopened after undergoing a bit of a facelift. Honestly, I didn't notice a big difference, which is a good thing. It is still a wonderful restaurant, with a view that is hard to beat. It's basically a steakhouse, so not exactly a creative menu, but everything I've ever tried has been very good. My only complaint is they have a very high corkage fee, $25. I can't imagine they have many guests that bring their own wine, and given how much the entrees cost, it's not like they are taking a bath if you don't order wine off their list. And since most guests are staying at the hotel, you could just order several things to go, go back to your room, or pick a quiet spot on the grounds to eat and enjoy your own wine.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOur 38th Anniversary WeekendFirst allow me to rave about your staff. Mr. Trevor Allen was absolutely outstanding in his willingness to assist in answering our needs. He took my wife and me in hand and largely due to Mr. Allen our dining experience at the Sunset Terrance was made more memorable. Then there was Sidney our waitress/server. Her personally and friendliness coupled with great professional awareness provided another memorable step on our ladder for a successful evening Grove Park Inn. The food was exceptional. I am a steak person and the rib eye was one of the best I ever had. My wife and I fell in love with your light flakey biscuits. I'm going to try my best to duplicate the recipe. I hope you use the biscuit in a strawberry shortcake offering.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMwait staff & chef not on same pageTo begin, we ordered the Caesar salad to share. I ordered rack of lamb, medium rare and she ordered the lobster tail. We also ordered the fingerling potatoes and spinach with egg to share. To begin, what we each got was a small Caesar salad and a half of a lobster tail. Duh! So the wait staff took it back and we then received the correct Caesars salad. When the entree arrived, rack of lamb was cooked well done not medium rare. Duh! Waiter took my whole plate of meat, potatoes and spinach and sent it back. The manager on duty brought back another plate with the rack of lamb correctly cooked but without any of the side dishes of spinach or potatoes. The waiter noticed this and brought another order of the potatoes and spinach. Not cool!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMhistoric settingLovely evening in a wonderful historic place. However, very pricey drink, food, parking fee. If you can splurge, then save for a special occasion.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome experience!Everything about our dining experience was great! The service, view, weather, wine and especially the rack of the lamb....OMG!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniversaryMy husband and I went to dinner here for our 10 year anniversary dinner. Service was wonderful, the portions were large-definitely getting your monies worth here. We were very pleased with our choices. Gorgeous views at dinner as well. They made it a very special evening for us as well.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMQuite an experience! We traveled to Asheville from Miami for our Anniversary, and happily, my wife found this gem of a restaurant! While I normally avoid hotel restaurants, this was a delightful experience. It was pretty chilly, and starting to rain, so we were a little hesitant about eating outside. Also, outside dining is usually kind of casual, and I wanted a nice atmosphere for a special occasion. The staff was very helpful in locating a table which was right under their heaters, and out of the rain. The vibe of the terrace is very up-scale, so that worked well. The food was exceptional, our waitress was pleasantly attentive (and gave helpful suggestions for other things to do in Asheville), and the whole evening was a hit!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMIncredible atmosphereWe really enjoyed the dinner. Definitely higher priced than most but you are paying for an incredible setting at the basin of the mountains. It's a postcard picture while you are eating.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
