Sunset Beach -
Best Restaurants in Shelter Island
Sunset Beach is a great spot for a
drink but to dine good luck getting what you want. The waiters were terrible. We got the wrong order, and we didn't see a waiter the entire meal. One bus boy was the only saving grace. He got us everything we needed. I actually tipped him and told him he should be getting our waiter's (15%, no more--and we are big tippers) tip. I would only come for A DRINK back to this place, and only during the lunch hour when it is less crowded. It's honestly not worth the money. While the location and view are great, the pretentious service and so-so food is sub-par for the amount you are paying to eat there."

As we approached the restaurant
for which we had a reservation, four young 20 somethings were basically being asked to leave the bar. One was so drunk he could barely stand. The food was o.k., nothing to write home about, and it was DEFINITELY overpriced for what it was. I wanted to go back to the beach across from the restaurant to watch the sunset on the following night. My spouse was vehemently opposed, after the negative experience, but we went nonetheless. Sure enough the place was mobbed. The whole place is a bit pretentious. Seems like it's trying to be South Beach on Shelter Island, which just doesn't quite work."

Sunset Beach is an enigma. The
location and set-up of the establishment is beautiful, and one feels as though they are in the South of France or Martinique, which is indeed valuable. But that's where it ends. The food is average at best and the service poor except for the lovely hostess. The server was inattentive as were her minions of staff all moving about with their heads down. When beckoned they are stunned,"Me??" A friend cautioned, "It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. It's "hipsterish." That was correct."
Dined on 6/25/2014
Sunset Beach is always festive and
never fails to transport you. The food is fabulous, the service friendly and the atmosphere inspiring. I felt like I was having lunch at a chic resort in the south of France."
Dined on 6/28/2014
I come here every summer and am
never disappointed. I hear people rag on the service a lot, but I've always been happy with mine. Bartenders (Kurt and Kirstie?) were awesome and make some great cocktails. Great place for dinner or just to hang out, enjoy the scenery and have some drinks."
Dined on 6/7/2014
waited for two couples before us
to be seated. when it was our turn, we were told it would be 20 or more minutes????? we left and did not regret. we ate at the lovely Pridwin Inn."
Dined on 6/22/2014
Consistently great.. Feels like
South of France....I always bring out of town guests... Best spot on Shelter Island or the Hamptons for lunch"
Dined on 6/15/2014
This is a great place and way to
temporarily escape from reality. In additional to the spectacular natural beauty of the setting, the people watching is boundless. The food was very simple, but good. A very vibrant bar/beach scene."

Made a 7:00 dinner reservation to
see the sunset and requested a table on the upper level. Were told ok. When we arrived, the upper level was closed; the next level was closed due to a private party. We ended up sitting in what is referred to as the cafe on the street level. Ordered a rose wine on the menu; they were out of it; were also out of three entree items on the menu and - they were out of bread!! How hard is it to get some loaves of bread. They were closing for the season at the end of the week...but they couldn't manage to buy some bread! We left and will only go there for drinks. Prices are high and food does not warrant those prices."

We love it at Sunset Beach for
either lunch, dinner, or drinks. Fun atmosphere, loud music, its a little bit of Europe in Shelter Island. The food is good but not great, like a steak frites, burger, salad, etc. A bit overpriced, like 4 croquets that are dime sized for $20! And the house rose is $75 a bottle! But you don't go for the food, its more about the ambience and beautiful views... and the sunset!"

Good scene and if u order the
right dish the food is good. Horrible service; non professional staff all around"
Dined on 8/28/2013
This is the place to go for great
food and ambience. The frisee calimari salad was delish, as was everything the 4 of us had. The view is off the hook, beautiful people, bar scene is fab. Sergio (our waiter) was superb. As the night progressed the bar and restaurant were full. Go early for the beach and stay for fun bar scene, excellent bistro fare, and a sunset not to be missed."
Dined on 8/24/2013
The food and service are just OK,
it's the view you are coming here for"
Dined on 7/30/2013
Well we sat next to Hoda Kotb from
the today show... That should tell you what type of a scene this place is. The food and wine were overpriced but that's what you would expect from this type of place. 3 shrimp in the shrimp cocktail for 18 dollars little ridiculous at least give 4 the striped bass special of the day was way too salty the salad was delicious and the north fork wine was marked up about 100% which was a tad painful haha. But again the scenery was beautiful people watching and celeb citing as always was great"

Had a group of adults for my bday
dinner. All great except restaurant allowed ten 3 year olds to play in in front of our table. We had to get them to move as neither restaurant, nor the respective parents cared that their kids were ruining our dinner. If you are a group without children, ask to sit on roof terrace and not in sand. We did not know better."
Dined on 8/15/2013
slow service, screaming kids(not
the restaurant's fault) and, no view unless one sits at the railing or roof deck. the roof deck, which I am told is always windy! I had the steak, medium, it was obvious it was frozen as it was flat of flavor and watery. the tomato salad, the tomatoes were ice cold. based on hostess behavior, best to know her too. very disappointed, but it was sunny and I have my health! I am going to chalk it up to a bad day at sunset beach"
Dined on 8/14/2013
Highly recommend this restuarant.
A tad expensive but worth it! The service was very good."
Dined on 8/8/2013
We weren't expecting much,
considering the wildly mixed reviews here & on Yelp, but wanted to visit Shelter Island for dinner & see the sunset. It was a Tuesday night, so I can't vouch for what happens there on the wknd, but we had great food AND service, & the sunset was amazing! Lively crowd even on Tuesday. Grilled octopus entree was excellent. Go!"

Great views Of sunset..... Food
Very good... GoodForASpecial Occasion."

Sunset Beach is the sceney place
to eat on Shelter Island, no question about it. The surprise comes in that the food tends to be remarkably high quality, and the service is accommodating and doting, especially during lunch and weeknight dining. Towards the weekend the restaurant and bar get incredibly packed and the service suffers mildly. They'll go above and beyond to rectify any mishaps though. Late night on the top floor is my favorite way to eat here, although the bar scene is worth checking out, if for nothing else than a chance of pace from the usual casual Shelter Island routine."
Dined on 7/26/2013
Very nice sea view. Can be quite
crowded despite the long journey to get there"
Dined on 7/26/2013
Although the view at sunset is
fabulous, the dishes look and taste like they were prepared at breakfast time. Everything just reheated and dried out. Frozen squid used for calamari instead of locally caught. And was it squid or something else? Mussels that sat in old juice all day, shriveled up and tasting like yesterday's dish."
Dined on 7/24/2013
The restaurant and its terrace is
set next to the road but traffic is reasonably quiet. We did not like the experience. The restaurant was virtually empty which did not add to the ambience. We ordered Loup de Mer and we got a whole fish with no vegetables, rice or potatoes. It was not Loup de mer but a small seabass. Really disappointing! We could have been warned when ordering. Prices are high."
Dined on 7/23/2013
Sunset Beach never disappoints!
But this evening was a particular standout. Everything from the music to the waiter to the cocktails were just perfection. I am a little scared that it might never be topped. Do yourself a favor and order 4 serving of the croquettes right at the start, you will not regret it. The scenery could not be better if it was art directed. And dont forget to pop into the shop in the lobby afterwards for really cute, beach-friendly shoes, wraps and bags."
Dined on 7/19/2013
Locally caught and grown
selections, fabulous sunset view. I really appreciated and enjoyed the local wines selection. Only bummer was the service. The hostess seemed confused, at best . Our waitress had the personality of a rock. The exception was the helpful bartender who convinced me to try the very excellent wine from a nearby vineyard. The menu selection was great, though my seabass was slightly overcooked and we were disappointed that we could not sub out Brussels sprouts for squash (though honestly, the squash was so good it was not a huge disappointment. Still, hardly seems like a request the kitchen could not accomodate). If they could improve the service, I would have rated higher."
Dined on 7/16/2013
Trashy loud obnoxious (and that
included the staff sadly) So loud and full of botox skinny 30year old women and 50 year old fat men. 'Euro' If you're tacky you will love this. If you have some class you will hate it."
Dined on 7/12/2013
Beautiful place and people.
Sitting under the sun - and not having an option - was not nice. The hostess service was very poor. Prices were way too high, service at the table was ok. And burger was great."
Dined on 7/6/2013
The vibe and ambiance are
fantastic. The sunset is the most beautiful thing to see at this place. It's a real hot spot, but the food and drinks are completely overpriced and the service is the most horrendous I've ever seen. Go for one drink, not more."
Dined on 7/5/2013
Very energetic crowd albiet
somewhat snooty under 40 crowd. beachy attire. reservation for 930 got seated at 1015 got food at almost 11 was busy 4th of july wknd. waitress overworked but still pleasant to us. cabana bar style dining three levels of tables. food was very good."
Dined on 7/5/2013
Food wasn't great, but people
watching was incredible."

Sitting at a table with an
outstanding view of the sun dipping in the bay, it's no surprise they call it Sunset Beach. Delicious seafood especially the grilled octopus and grilled prawns, washed down by the always consistent French Blonde Sancerre, it was a great dining experience. Service was friendly, and attentative, and ambiance was one of kind. One that resembles the beachside restaurant/ lounges of Mykonos, Sardinia, or SainteTropez. Been going there for years, and never disappointed. Don't forget to visit the upstairs bar late night, where the DJ spins classics and dancing on the bar is encouraged."
Dined on 6/23/2013
Still the best location for
outdoor dining in the hamptons, but the food is only okay. Small portions for $40 entrees."
Dined on 6/22/2013
I think they have a new chef this
season. The food was better than usual. Great octopus, tuna tartare and side of brussel sprouts! dish. Best sunsets in the Hamptons! Pricey, but you pay for the location and view."
Dined on 6/8/2013
We had such a fabulous time at
Sunset Beach! We loved spending the day at the beach and then having lunch and cocktails on the restaurants roof deck! The service was incredible! They gave us a beautiful table and accommodated us when we kept changing our reservation time. We enjoyed our time so much that we stayed for drinks at the bar after we finished eating. I will definitely recommend to our friends!"
Dined on 6/1/2013
Love it. Beach, bistro, outdoors,
stylish, people, sexy, fun, open spaces, walk around, meet people, eye candy"
Dined on 7/11/2012
A seasonal restaurant, and I
happen to be there the day after Labor Day. It was quiet, but the view was so worth it! I bet during the summer months it will be lively and busy and well-worth the ferry ride!!"
Dined on 9/4/2012
Was very disappointed, as we have
enjoyed Sunset Beach over the years. However, while reading Page Six, I learned Pippa Middleton had been dining there the same night which expained why there was such a commotion that evening. Will go back..."

Always a pleasure to hit this
Standard hotel gem in Shelter Island. It has a lively ambiance and spectacular view of sunset. Food was delicious but the service was just ok. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend , its a must do when on SI."
Dined on 8/17/2012
This is one of our favorite
restaurants. The sunset is magnificent, the food is great, the people-watching is exceptional."
