A word from Sunny Spot
What's Sunny Spot? Think roadside cook shop, where Roy Choi’s in the kitchen and every day's a holiday. Here you'll find sticky, crackling, double-fried jerk chicken, rum-glazed prawns and plates of fried pig's feet. Brown sugar short ribs scented with Old World spices will vanish under hungry hands while the plate is still hot-hot-hot. Fingers are to be licked, conversations are to be had later... because, for the most part, everyone’s here to EAT.

Diner Reviews
  • "Went there with some old friends. We each ordered different entrees. Of the 4 of us, my entree, the steak sandwich, was fantastic. My boyfriend's scallops were okay. The roasted lamb was okay. But my friend who ordered the oxtail stew...he got the shaft. First off, it was served in a huge bowl with the liquid only being about an inch deep. It almost looked like he got an empty bowl. As far as the oxtail...what oxtail?? Talk about "where's the beef"...paltry is the only word I can use to describe this excuse for an entree. And then dessert...it was meh. Overall, nothing to write home about except the steak sandwich."

  • "His empire continues. WWRD? What would Roy do is just the world we live in. Great service, solid food, a scene and a half. If you can't fly to South Beach or Vegas for Sunday brunch, just come here. Grits and runny eggs? Just eat it."

  • "Went to Sunnyspot and had the weekend brunch. The food was great! Wish the portions were a little bigger, but the all you can drink helped"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sunny Spot, it was our maiden trip - a weekday afternoon so there was no queue or crowd at all, and as a result, given exclusive attention by the server. I love the quirky ambience, the bar area looks really fun and the outdoor seating is fantastic. I ordered the steak sandwich and calamari - both of great portions. There are also a few parking spots available for its customers. And Abbot Kinney Blvd is just down the road, so the cafe's location is perfect for those who want a chilled-out afternoon in the Venice beach area. Definitely my cafe of choice for taking my friends visiting LA to!"

  • "Wow, wow, wow! You know you’re going to have a good time when you open the door and you see a crowd full of people and tables filled with Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s and Rum infused drinks. Everyone, I mean everyone was having a great time. The food was amazing and not just your ordinary brunch type food. The Ropa Vieja and Mofongo are to die for and the service was just great. It was as if you were having brunch at a friend’s house. That’s how friendly the staff is there as well as the locals. Matt is running one of the best spots in Venice. I will definitely be back for dinner and happy hour. Hands down, this is my new favorite brunch spot!"

  • "The food was great and the ambience was great but the service was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too slow... The food came out super slow and as great as it was that our waitress would just walk around with drinks in hand to offer us as refills it would take FOREVER for drinks we actually wanted refilled to come out... We had a late comer to the group and he was there for over an hour but the waitress only came by twice... Aside from the super slow service everything else was good... Next time I'm definitely sitting at the bar instead"

  • "My wife and I had dinner there, I would have given the food a 5 star based on most of our food, but what really killed them was the terrible vegetable dish I ordered for my entree, hardly any other vegetables other that steamed or sauteed greens, I got a few microscopic pieces of colored cauliflower and for $16.00, the dish was very dissapointing, on the other hand the rest of the food was outstanding, I might be back."

  • "Cute place, but extremely loud inside. Patio seating may be better. Interesting menu and very reasonably priced, particularly the bottomless mimosas, bloody mary's and rum punch. Three of us went for brunch and agreed that food was OK, but nothing extraordinary. Would have expected a little better from a Roy Choi place. Service was perfectly fine, but again, nothing extraordinary. Valet service is an advantage."

  • "I had never been here before and it was an unexpected pleasure. Saturday Brunch was wonderful. Food was great. Service was excellent - ambiance was good energy. There is a quiet dinning room, but if you want to be "in the middle of it", stay in the front room."

  • "Food was delicious and loved the sunny patio. Service was a bit slow despite not being very crowded on a weekday lunch time."

  • "As usual, our latest visit to the Sunny Spot was great. We typically go there for brunch but needed to eat around 5:30ish. The dinner menu was more limited more vegetarians but was still pretty good. The service was a little slow but forgivable since the food was awesome. Our little guy always loves the music... i guess it's the West Indian in him!"

  • "Excellent cocktails. Gourmet and affordable happy hour snacks. Dinner was good - loved the jerk chicken and the jerk fries. Oxtail pasta also excellent. Sitting in the main room by the bar is extremely noisy. Better to sit outside on the large patio or in the back room if you would like to be able to carry on a conversation. Service was outstanding. Overall the place is casual and friendly."

  • "For a westside hotspot, the servers are so friendly, genuine, helpful and enthusiastic. I keep returning because of them. The food was not as consistently fabulous as Choi's other restaurants, so that was disappointing. But the happy hour menu and appetizers were tasty enough (coconut shrimp, calamari and slider). And the drinks were very nice. The decor/ambience is perfectly chic without being stuffy. Perfect place for drinks and apps."

  • "Met a few friends there and food was pretty good. We had the Nuggs, Chicken Wings and Calamari and we weren't disappointed. The wings were huge and the Nuggs were delicious. I'd recommend it."

  • "Sunny Spot formally known as Beachside or Beachwood drastically transformed from the last time I was here. Revamped into a Jamacan/Caribbean motif, the ambience is incredible. They took time to reapholster the stools with really eye grabbing flowers, fruits and random images. The table we sat at was very long and romantic, but can seat 15+ people. The beer is cheap, $5 a red stripe and they have a variety of aged scotch I found to be pleasantly smokey. The food is great, but coming a second time, it wasn't much different from the first time I ate here when I ordered the lamb. This time I ordered the Diablo Shrimp and it came with black beans and a delicious red cabbage slaw which was fresh and exciting but redundant. Overall Awesome!"

  • "My wife and I ate at this place on Saturday night (2/8). We had an early dinner and the dining room was basically empty and quiet which we liked. The bar area separated by a wall was crowded and loud. The outdoor seating area is behind a wall that separates it from Washington Blvd which is loud and busy. The decor in the main dining room is different and not just one style. The food is very good and has a very nice spicy taste. We had the Cuban Nuggs as an appetizer and then the scallops and lamb as the main dishes. We loved it. The service was attentive and very friendly. Overall a great experience."

  • "I don't recommend. The menu is limited, the service was so so. The bill was high. I had the striped bass and it was mushy and fishy. My friend had the skirt steak and it was too chewy and didn't have flavor. I ordered creme brûlée; we each had two glasses of wine. Our bill came out to 145. Valet is six dollars."

  • "As a member of a group that LOVES to brunch, I was very happy with our experience here this past weekend. I like that the menu is not just eggs, waffles, omelettes. They put an interesting twist on some basic breakfast foods. Also, who can complain about $13 bottomless mimosas??"

  • "Seriously this is one of the best hidden gems in the area. Great vibe. Great drinks. Great music. I brought friends here for a small dinner party and they all fell in love. If you like food with a little kick this is the place for you. Happy hour is the best deal in town!"

  • "FOOD WAS NOT TO MY TASTE AND I FOUND IT HARD TO FIND ITEMS TO ORDER. PRICES ON DRINKS WAS HIGH FOR THE AREA. THE DESSERTS WERE NOT GOOD. THE BREAD PUDDING, OTHER THAN A SCOOP OF ICE CREAM WAS AWFUL. THE CREME BRULE WAS WATERY. WE DID NOT FINISH ANY OF IT. THE STEAK SANDWICH WAS LOADED WITH MAYONNAISE AND NOT MUCH MEAT. THERE ARE BETTER CHOICES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD."

  • "Roy Choi is one of my favorite chefs. LOVE his trucks, LOVE Alibi, LOVE A-Frame. Don't know what went wrong here at Sunny Spot? ALL the food had ONE note. Spicy. we couldn't taste it and when moving on to another dish, we couldn't differentiate between the last dish because it was all flavored with the same overpowering spice. And we LOVE spice. Disappointed, won't be back. Ever. Surprised if this place lasts. :("

  • "I came here with my boyfriend after many successful brunch trips here and decided to check out their dinner menu. He ordered the fisherman stew and I ordered the heirloom salad, both of which were extremely flavorful but also packed quite some heat. They have a happy hour special in the evening and late night but I'm not sure what hours they run. All in all a very good experience as usual!"

  • "Fun rum drink menu, but server did not know drinks at all. Rum bar but could not describe rums. Food needs work. Calimari starter good. Pork balls were bland and needed more sauce. Burger has beautiful bun, but 1/2 inch unevenly cut red onion and minuscule beef patty ruined it. Very unbalanced. Apple salad had too much apple, not enough greens, too hot of dressing. But, the lemon mayo that came with the salad was wonderful with the yucca fries that came with the burger. Good slaw with the burger. Young, hip crowd."

  • "On vacation and went here and it lived up to the hype, very good menu, got the happy hour shrimp cocktail, muh f'kin mofongo, diver scallops and oxtail stew and everything was excellent, just very spicy so be prepared to drink a lot."

  • "the restaurant has all hard surfaces. The noise level is deafening, even in the outside patio. The fire marshal would have a field day here. The place was so over-crowded, it was difficult for servers to walk around. The food was fine and served nicely though."

  • "I've been to the Sunny Spot a few times and it's consistently great each time. The food is always delicious (I ate 2 servings of their sweet/salty plantains - don't judge me...) and the staff is always attentive. This last trip I went with my bf who's a celiac and our waitress was able to recommend dishes he could eat. It's a cool place to casually catch up with friends over brunch, late at night, whenever! I highly recommend this place."

  • "having been to all of Roy Choi's other restaurants multiple times I finally drove the extra blocks to Sunny Spot. It really doesn't feel like the food I'm used to from him and while it's still very good it was a disappointment."

  • "Sunny Spot is a wonderful place for breakfast/brunch. We went at 10am and the place was empty. The food was wonderful, the restaurant was clean/well decorated, and we really enjoyed being able to sit outside. My only issue is that the service was very poor. We were the only people there yet we had to wave down/look for our server every time we needed something. He was in the back chatting with his coworkers while we sat there. He was very pleasant/friendly but he was just struggling with serving us."

  • "Nice place for a la carte brunch if you're inclined to imbibe during the day. Initially disappointed that our group was seated inside (and I let the hostess know!) so the manager moved tables together so we could sit on the lovely outdoor patio. Food was on the OK+ side, w/the burger the star (as our friendly server noted) & Cuban sandwich very tasty/spicy. Place was packed on a Saturday afternoon at 12:30 when we arrived but calmed down considerably by 1-1:30. Totally hipster vibe permiates the place. Drinks were excellent, the $10 bottomless now $13. The 5-6 we each had in a couple hours were served happily, although I'm not sure how much vodka was actually in the Bloody Mary's but the rum punch and mimosas were strong."

  • "In addition to his China Town spot, Chego, A Frame in Culver City, and the roaming Kogi trucks, Roy Choi spreads his love of simple food and runny egg yolks at Sunny Spot in Venice. The hangover plate on a Sunday with bottomless mimosas is always just what I need, even if I'm not actually in recovery. I'm pretty sure you can call me a regular by now!"
    Dined on 11/29/2013
  • "Service was terrible. Staff lost our order and took over 1.5 hours to get our food and they took nothing off the bill. The drinks were just as slow. Food was so-so. The heirloom salad was very good. The roasted lamb was dry and tough. The burger is ok, but not great. Wings were just alright. Good drinks, if you can get one. I'm generally a fan of Roy Choi and have been to Kogi (many times), A-Frame, and Chego, but this one disappointed me. The space is nice, but I had been there previously and I think they did it a disservice in trying to make it more casual. Sorry, but I won't be back."
