What's Sunny Spot? Think roadside cook shop, where Roy Choi’s in the kitchen and every day's a holiday. Here you'll find sticky, crackling, double-fried jerk chicken, rum-glazed prawns and plates of fried pig's feet. Brown sugar short ribs scented with Old World spices will vanish under hungry hands while the plate is still hot-hot-hot. Fingers are to be licked, conversations are to be had later... because, for the most part, everyone’s here to EAT.

  • "Well, at least dinner did. The food was good but not exciting. Some chairs were back-to-back... They need to do something about seating arrangement. I can't believe I'm complaining about the chairs in a restaurant review, but, uh, yeah, I think it would have made a difference. Everything else didn't convince me it was worth coming back, not for dinner at least."

  • "I had the B-day Brunch at Sunny Spot last Sunday. They have very impressive menu, great service and great people watching. Very trendy place with excellent popular bottomless brunch drinks like champagne, mimosas, and Bloody Mary. The food is spicy and very tasty. The restaurant has a very unique interior design. The music was a bit loud but the staff did their best to accommodate our wishes. My party really had a great time at Sunny Spot!"

  • "Roy Choi, what happened here? Food is ordinary at best. Uninspired. Not creative. If I didn't know this was one of your restaurants, I sure would never have guessed by the food. I am a big fan of A Frame and the Kogi truck. But Sunny Spot needs some re-imagining before it can become my sunny spot."

  • "The food was not good at all. My plate was cold and had to be re-cooked. My friend's banana French toast had no bananas. I've had better at no name diners. Overall, just underwhelming. Not worthy of Roy Choi's name. I was so disappointed as I was prepared to love this place. Server was very nice and apologetic. She did everything she could to make our experience enjoyable. Also - the music was so loud I could not hear my companions at all, so we left and went to get dessert elsewhere - so you lost revenue even though I hear several other diners complained about this, it did not get lowered. So we left."

  • "The hostess greeted us warmly and our reservation was honored promptly - we were seated at a nicely located outdoor table. My pet peeve is these outdoor iron grated tables are dirty and not cleaned in between seatings (I was watching). When the waiter takes away your appetizers, they pick up your silverware and place it right on the dirty / never cleaned iron table. I did find this to be a turn off. The water was very nice and helpful in answering our questions. I simply found the food uninspired - not particularly tasty and with the inclusion of "beans and rice" with nearly every dish, it felt like we could have been at an Acapulco in the suburbs. I doubt that I will ever come back."

  • "The food was good...not great except for the bread pudding dessert that was FABULOUS!!! I expected the other food to be better. Dining on the patio was pleasant on a hot summer night and the service was OK. Parking is a problem unless you use valet at $6."

  • "So this time was not so sunny at Sunny Spot. I made reservations weeks ago asking for the patio but was told that the patio is not guaranteed because other people had reservations. Is that not contradictory? My party was only five people and there were many ways to accommodate us on the patio easily. Instead I had to be a pest to get seated. And service was not up to par. When I order bottomless drinks, I should not have to chase my server down to get a refill."

  • " Came at Happy hour when all appraisers were less expensive and we experienced many delicious inventive dishes. The bar began to get busy and the noise level after 7;300 PM increased immensely as the restaurant filled up. We never felt rushed and our waiter was excellent. We all would gladly go back again."

  • "We brought family in from out of town to try out this restaurant after watching "Chef". Of the five entrees, only three were good the diablo shrimp, lamb and ox tail pasta. The skirt steak and scallops, with the citrus/fruit was to sweet and hid the flavor of the entrees. The sides were disappointing as well, the black beans were bland and needed help. The appetizers were ok, mof ko wraps and calamari."

  • "Got to the restaurant at 6 pm. Thought they were closed. No one there but by 7 pm{end of happy hour) place was packed and a little bit noisy. Food was good. They love spice. So if you aren't a big fan of cooling down your mouth while eating ask them to tone it down a bit."

  • "Since I have difficulty hearing they kindly seated us in the back room. Wait staff was pleasant, attentive and efficient. I loved my apple salad which came with charred brussels sprouts and the rib appetizer, although spicy was very good. However, some of the food was too spicy, even for my son who loves spicy food. He had the jerk chicken and was unable to enjoy dinner because of the spice. His spice loving fiancée, loved her spicy fish stew but none of the rest of us at the table could eat it. It was an enjoyable meal - service was good but it will be difficult to return as two at the table were unimpressed with the over spiced food."

  • "They have a lovely outdoor patio for brunch and attentive service, but the food we ordered was surprisingly bland and high priced. We had the blueberry pancakes (came with 3, plus maple syrup and butter). The pancakes tasted as if made from a water-base (and not milk or buttermilk) and cost $11 - no sides. We also had the Banana French Toast - there were no bananas in sight and the bread could have been higher quality (perhaps a brioche) and they didn't use enough batter so it was dry. Again, the cost was $11 with no sides. We did order a side of plantains, which were delicious. The side of bacon we ordered was standard, nothing to write home about. Adding two coffees, tip and tax, we spent nearly $50 on this food - not worth it. "

  • "Had the hangover plate and unlimited rum punch and side of jerk potatoes. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Plaintain chips were thin and crispy. Tables sitting around us were friendly. Stayed way too long then walked down Abbott Kinney to sober up. Would definitely come back here. Ask for Tory to be your waiter."

  • "There must be at least 60 different rums to choose from and for $2 more than the cost of a shot, they will make a flavorful and not too sweet mixed drink. The ceviche and chicken wings were very good. The shrimp cocktail was too juicy. If looking for a Caribbean flair, it is a good choice."

  • "Five star bar ambiance & rum list is top notch. We cannot believe they serve Santa Teresa from Venezuela, since it is rare and our favorite. The drink special creations are very good as well. The service was also good. Unfortunately the food is way below average, unnecessarily spicy for some dishes like the lamb, and surprisingly bland in others like the skirt steak. The black bean paste accompanying the tostones does not work at all, or perhaps it was poi since it was so urggg, like pink oatmeal. One of the steaks arrived ice cold to the table and the place was not too busy to excuse that mistake. We highly recommend this place as a fun bar near the marina with very good service, but we wouldn't recommend the food at all."

  • "The bar area is large and was very loud which we heard was due to an overcrowded private party. Thankfully the restaurant area was much more quite so that my friends and I could enjoy our own conversation. The happy hour lasts all night and includes drinks you actually want. I had the steak sandwich which was really delious. The desert menu isn't very interesting but all my friend a really enjoyed their food choices. I would really like to go there again. I'd love to try their brunch menu also. "

  • "Service was not on point. Our server was either new or not on top of his game. He forgot to ask our joiners for thier drink order. We were not given share plates and food began to arrive. Also, we were not told the it was las call on food. So, we were not able to order more. But, that was fine because the food was lacking soul and seasoning. Never going back."

  • "We celebrated a friend's birthday for lunch, midweek. It was a hot day, but we chose to sit outside, as the patio area at the small cafe style tables. The waiter was great and very attentive. The cocktails are fab and the food was spicy and delicious. I had the cheeseburger on brioche bun (yummmm!). When we arrived at noon it was empty but by the time we left at 2ish it was quite busy. Obviously, a neighborhood gem and a great place to hang out with friends and have a drink or two with some tasty food. Very casual, but charming. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Went there with some old friends. We each ordered different entrees. Of the 4 of us, my entree, the steak sandwich, was fantastic. My boyfriend's scallops were okay. The roasted lamb was okay. But my friend who ordered the oxtail stew...he got the shaft. First off, it was served in a huge bowl with the liquid only being about an inch deep. It almost looked like he got an empty bowl. As far as the oxtail...what oxtail?? Talk about "where's the beef"...paltry is the only word I can use to describe this excuse for an entree. And then dessert...it was meh. Overall, nothing to write home about except the steak sandwich."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sunny Spot, it was our maiden trip - a weekday afternoon so there was no queue or crowd at all, and as a result, given exclusive attention by the server. I love the quirky ambience, the bar area looks really fun and the outdoor seating is fantastic. I ordered the steak sandwich and calamari - both of great portions. There are also a few parking spots available for its customers. And Abbot Kinney Blvd is just down the road, so the cafe's location is perfect for those who want a chilled-out afternoon in the Venice beach area. Definitely my cafe of choice for taking my friends visiting LA to!"

  • "Wow, wow, wow! You know you’re going to have a good time when you open the door and you see a crowd full of people and tables filled with Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s and Rum infused drinks. Everyone, I mean everyone was having a great time. The food was amazing and not just your ordinary brunch type food. The Ropa Vieja and Mofongo are to die for and the service was just great. It was as if you were having brunch at a friend’s house. That’s how friendly the staff is there as well as the locals. Matt is running one of the best spots in Venice. I will definitely be back for dinner and happy hour. Hands down, this is my new favorite brunch spot!"

  • "The food was great and the ambience was great but the service was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too slow... The food came out super slow and as great as it was that our waitress would just walk around with drinks in hand to offer us as refills it would take FOREVER for drinks we actually wanted refilled to come out... We had a late comer to the group and he was there for over an hour but the waitress only came by twice... Aside from the super slow service everything else was good... Next time I'm definitely sitting at the bar instead"

  • "My wife and I had dinner there, I would have given the food a 5 star based on most of our food, but what really killed them was the terrible vegetable dish I ordered for my entree, hardly any other vegetables other that steamed or sauteed greens, I got a few microscopic pieces of colored cauliflower and for $16.00, the dish was very dissapointing, on the other hand the rest of the food was outstanding, I might be back."
