A word from Sundance The Steakhouse
Since its opening in 1974, prime steaks and martinis have never gone out of style at this Palo Alto institution. The atmosphere is very clubby with fireplaces, dark wood, sports memorabilia and plush leather booths tucked into the many nooks throughout the dining room. Famous for their slow-roasted prime rib & hand-cut U.S.D.A Prime Steaks, they also offer fresh seafood, cold water lobster tail & succulent shellfish. The 23 oz. Bone-In Rib eye Steak is the "Boss' Favorite" while the Double Cut Filet Mignon runs a close second. Sundance is respected for serving the best food money can buy coupled with value & simplicity – a welcome relief for serious food & steak aficionados. The menu is supported by an award-winning wine list that features over 400 selections focusing on highly allocated Napa Valley Cabernets & Sonoma Pinot Noirs. Exceptional ratings & numerous restaurant awards rank Sundance the Steakhouse as a true dining destination.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • " Everyone in our party had Prime Rib which was delicious. Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach were all very good. Oysters on the half shell were small and cost over sixteen dollars for six. Excellent desserts were brought to the table, but the coffee we ordered to enjoy with dessert did not appear for awhile. Coffee was finally served in half-filled small cups and was not quite hot. No one visited our table to refill our cups. Extensive wine list, but mark-up seems higher than many restaurants. Service was fairly good except for the coffee, but the waitress did not smile or show any warmth to our table. She did not check on the table nor did anyone ever come by the table to ask if everything was okay. "

  • "I went here for my birthday on Saturday. We started off with drinks and they were excellent. The bar tender had a heavy hand. The food was very, very good. I went there for the prime rib and wasn't disappointed. The service was excellent as well. Only downside was the lighting, a little too dark. "

  • "The food and setting was great for celebrating a special occasion. The waitstaff was less than attentive especially considering the price point of the menu items. The larger party seated behind us was especially loud and seemed to command more attention from our waiter than our party did. When ordering beef there be sure to order one less than your desired doneness since the beef tends to come out more well done then you have ordered. All in all though the food more than made up for the service. "

  • "The restaurant has a very pleasant ambiance but the food is not so great for the price paid. We ordered the filet minion teryaki skewers and they were just so-so. I would have expected better for a restaurant that specializes in steak. The meat was just meat, not glazed or seasoned - the teryaki was the dipping sauce. I've eaten at Sundance before, but it has been several years. I remember it as having been better."

  • "Great place to eat and the wine menu is great... Sundance Menu, prefixed meal is great and reasonable priced... I would also like to add, Happy Hour was really good too..."

  • "Went to sundance to celebrate with my girlfriend, the prime rib that I ordered was very well done (nope I got a medium actually!) and my girl loved her ahi tuna very very much. Would totally go back again for the food. Place was really dark and noisy though!"

  • "Sundance the Steakhouse was great! The food was excellent, our steaks and prime ribs were done to perfection! Baked potatoes with all the extras were huge! Service was outstanding. Our waiter was very attentive and since our evening was a birthday celebration, he went right along with all the craziness of the evening. The only thing I would say is the entire restaurant was WAY to dark, hard to see menus and hard to even walk through the restaurant. BUT, I will return again for sure!"

  • "This is the first time I"'e been back in about 20 years, even though I only live 5 minutes away. the roast beef was really delicious, but the tired, dark decor from the 1060's was depressing, and the noise level was just terrible. Also, I didn't appreciate having to wait 30 minutes even though I had a reservation."

  • "Dark interior, super packed. Noisy. Waiter was a bit flippant. Steak was well prepared, timely service."

  • "My husband and I requested a quiet table and were delighted when we were seated in a back room at a large table for four. Our waiter suggested the Bibb Lettuce Salad and we were not disappointed as it was crisp and refreshing. Although the restaurant is known for their steaks, we ordered salmon and swordfish which were perfectly prepared. Our waiter was professional and made just the right amount of appearances at our table."

  • "Seems like every time I eat at Sundance the hostess (or hostesses there are usually two) are confused. This time was not exception. Had a 8 o'clock reservation. Arrived 15 minutes earlier. Hostess said it will be just one minute for a table and so my date and I waited nearby. For 9 minutes and then at 8 I went up to the hostess. This time I was TOLD, "you have a 8 PM reservation and we will get your table as soon as possible". Wow. I humbly said we will go to the bar. Which we did. Ordered drinks. They never showed up. Surly cocktail waitress. She never has been friendly. Efficient, yes, friendly no. At 8:15 the hostess came and said our table was ready. And (I do not lie) 8 minutes later, our drinks arrived. 30 after reservation."

  • "Food and service are good. Just only one comment on the seat that not that convenience for business talk in half round table."

  • "The Early Bird specials are the best. Great choices at a reasonable price. The swordfish was delicious and the ceasar salad is always reliably tasty. Nice wine list and the cocktails are honest and as ordered."

  • "Food is consistent and I love the vegetables that are always cooked to perfection! My husband loves the peppercorn steak."

  • "We had outstanding service. The staff treated us as if we where their VIP customer that was there every Sunday. Prime Rib a must! The only place on the peninsula that still does the slow roast for 8 hours to perfection. Great for a group or family event."

  • "I booked my reservation a week ahead. However when we arrived, hostress tried to seat us at table in the lounge. It was crowded and noise there. If any one sits there, the scenery will be behinds of waiting guests; or staring guests. I rejected the arrangement. She unwillingly, with attitude made us wait and "need to speak to manager". Then she led us to a 4 Seater booth with 2 added on chairs. So I was sitting in the hallway with my guest. The server was fine but I will NOT go again. I rather go Alexander Steak House where they value their customers."

  • "We were celebrating a birthday.I called ahead to order cake & candle. I reminded them upon entering & again while there. Our waiter Luke L was very gruff considering we had 2 elderly women w/ us. We got sunset special & food was good. Sm size of prime rib was just enough, but WAIT for our entrees was unacceptable. My husband ordered coffee to stall. It came, no dessert. It was now 2 hours+ w/ a 90 yr old waiting! Finally waiter comes & says I know you're waiting for 1 more thing but will there be anything else? & then asks who's the guest of honor? RUINED THE SURPRISE! When it finally came it wasn't even mud pie! It was creme brulee. When I pointed it out, he said "Don't I get points for my song?" Dinner took over 2 hrs w/ elderly people!"

  • "We have eaten at Sundance several times before. But this time, my kebab was overcooked (I returned it). My husband's rib eye was a little tough, which we'd never has problems with before. My son's filet mignon was cooked beautifully, though. Service was also disappointing. The waiter did not ask my husband of he wanted a drink refill. I had to flag someone down to get a glass of wine. And I had to wait 10-15 minutes to find the waiter to say that my food was overcooked."

  • "We had the early bird dinner....a nice value. The only negative is that they removed the top sirloin from the early bird menu. The receptionists are rather unhelpful, despite their scanty clothing...which is why they are at the door, I guess. Parking is a problem."

  • "Excellent service, once past the hostess desk. Succulent prime rib and teriyaki filet mignon skewers. Our server was excellent: professional, and gave great advice for ordering the beef and wines. Med-rare is still red, and just before turning pink. Sunset dinner specials are plenty and a real value."

  • "The food was good; the service was good. I asked for a quiet table because I'm hearing impaired. The background music was so loud, even my friends had a hard time hearing."

  • "Jeff provided his usual, exceptional service. Prime rib was very flavorful and the mud pie did not disappoint. Our go-to place for prime rib. Is there anything else on the menu?"

  • "Another excellent dining experience. Good food and service by Jeff"

  • "I was expecting to have the best steak of my life. I ordered their prime NY stake on the bone - medium. It was hard and tasteless and I left most of it on the plate. For dessert I ordered berries, the strawberries looked perfect but were not sweet. The appetizers were good. Between the two of us, we spent $270, which included 1/2 bottle of wine. The service was superficial and the waiter did not bother to ask us how was the food a single time. It is very unlikely that I will set my foot at this restaurant again."

  • "We have been coming here with our son for over 6 years and always consistently the best prime rib and steak by far. We live in Santa Barbara where we have great restaurants, but this outshines anything we have at home. The servers have many years of experience and always enthusiastic and friendly. We love the ambiance of this up scale steak house with a Stanford sports theme. Owners are always there and make sure that we feel welcome as tho it's our first time. If you are looking for really great meat and fish entrees then Sundance is the best. Can't wait to go back soon!"

  • "I love this place, its so..real. No fancy smancy artsy food, just real food cooked well. Consistently good quality ingredients, great staff. Not so noisy you have to yell at the person next to you, which is wonderful. Trendy? No. Just good. Two had the lean perfectly cooked prime rib, two of us had the perfectly cooked, fresh swordfish. Neither dish was soaked with sauces or had little twirly things around them. Quality doesn't need window dressing."

  • "Was very much looking forward to a great time and a great steak. The night started off great at the bar and we were excited for the dinner to come. It was our second time there and to be honest the quality of the food that I remembered was higher the first time. Not sure where the disconnect was, but, both my wife's filet Mignon and my strip steak were way way over cooked...we asked for Med-rare and med-extra rare....unfortunately what was served to us was like eating a dried up cowboy boot."

  • "Lobster was over cooked and tough. Left a decent part of it on plate. For the price, one would expect better. Salmon serving size was small. Reservation time was late. Otherwise nice place. Service was average. Great location and ambience. Seating, when it became available was nice. Not too crowded and congested. Caesar salad was great."
