Diner Reviews
  • "Despite having great food and a nice setting, we have never walked into a louder restaurant, even before the music started playing. We had to shout across the table from one another"

  • "Really enjoy Sunda for lunch. Sat outside which is a little noisy but worked well on a beautiful day. Chef's Special was amazing. Have also had excellent sushi and usually like the server's recommendation. Anxious to try dinner here - but on an expense account."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "It was miserably hot in the restaurant the night we were there. Just because it's nice outside doesn't mean you don't have to turn the A/C on for the people inside! Everyone in our group was miserable and if I walked in to that temp again I would walk right back out"

  • "This was probably the 5th time we have eaten at Sunda and as always the food was excellent. We dined early (5.30pm) as we have two young kids (5yrs and 1yr). We were sat up at the chefs table by the Sushi bar which was fun and gave the kiddos extra to watch. What we really like about Sunda is that unlike some other "high end" restaurants they welcome kids, the service is always just as much about the adults getting what they want as it is the kids. Sunda is not a cheap night out, nor do we ever expect it to be but we never leave feeling like we are unhappy at our bill. It is always worth the $$ for the food, the service and the overall experience. Thx for a lovely evening Sunda."

  • "I love this restaurant! We end up not making a reservation but seems they always find a spot for us. The drinks they make are especially to die for. My friend can't get past the one with pear & saki while I'm more the cucumber one. The brussel sprouts I dream of. Everything i've had here has been incredible. The sea bass, the sushi, the dessert. Go for the food because you can't hear ANYTHING in there. Don't know why restaurants want this & don't put in some noise reduction rugs or something? The communal table was really cool but it's a little too high & we were perched on the edge so we sat at sushi bar."

  • "seems to be a hot spot, But it is very loud and not an easy place to hold a conversation And the food rather mediocre and there are better asian food in chicago"

  • "The food and service was top notch! We would definitely go back. We loved the speciality rolls."

  • "I had been to Sunda in the past and had okay experiences. However, I recently went with my family and the food quality and taste have appeared to have gone downhill dramatically. 7 out of 8 dishes we ordered we not good. The kale salad was burnt to a crisp and had no flavor. The firecracker roll was fishy and overloaded with mayonnaise. The black cod was also fishy. The rib eye was burnt to the point of not being edible. The food was horrible and we will definitely not be going back to Sunda in the future. Gross!"

  • "The food was outstanding! One of the best meals I've had in the city in years. We were in the back so it was very conversation friendly for our table of 5. The service was also excellent with an extremely knowledgable waiter --all of his recommendations were fabulous and the staff was attentive without being intrusive. The chef came to our table to check in on our meal--he was friendly and approachable. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food is amazing. A colleague told me the brussel sprouts were by far one of her favorite dishes there. They were delicious and did not disappoint. Our server was personable, friendly, and seemed genuinely happy wait on us. If you haven't been to Sunda for brunch, you must check it out."

  • "I had a 9 pm reservation for 2 and arrived just before 9 pm. The hostess checked us in told us it would just be a minute. We waited over 30 minutes before I asked how long it would be until our table was ready. She was very rude and said she didn't know how long and said we could sit at the sushi bar if we wanted. She never pointed us to the bar to have a drink while we waited and stared at her computer screen while others were trying to get her attention. After we were seated, our server was outstanding and made several recommendations off the menu. Our food arrived quickly and we weren't rushed out of our seats. Besides the bad experience with the hostess, we had a lovely time at Sunda."

  • "Sunda is a favorite place to dine. Food is outstanding. Service is friendly and attentive. It's a happening place, always bustling and alive. It's a little too loud tho if you want to have a conversation. You are shouting a lot across the table. But it still is wonderful. And I will definitely go back."

  • "I tried Sunda for the first time a couple of years ago for my graduation dinner, and been bringing family and friends visiting me in town there all the time. I live overseas now, but still visit Chicago once a year, and I've never had a trip to Chicago without going back to Sunda. It's a must."

  • "While the ambience and decor are great, the food was simply underwhelming. The best thing we ordered was the Sunda Rainbow roll and that was average at best. We also ordered: Lemongrass Beef Lollipops, Longevity Garlic Crab Noodles, Summer Garden, and Scorpion rolls. The noodles were insanely salty! I imagine I would have enjoyed it otherwise. All-in-all a disappointing experience. I simply would not recommend Sunda."

  • "Food is absolutely outstanding- it's one of the best restaurants in all of Chicago."

  • "Great food. Small portions and a bit pricey. Staff were great. Great experience but very loud."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago due to their good food, energetic music and trendy crowd. Plus, it's an easy walking distance to the bars we like on Hubbard Street. We always order the crispy/spicy cauliflower (I know cauliflower sounds weird but it's delicious!) and "the great white" along with a couple maki rolls. I'd recommend the beef lollipop rolls too."

  • "This was my first time dining at Sunda. Our service was horrible and really ruined the entire dining experience. I was there with one other person and we asked how much to order since it is family style and she told us to order WAY too much food. On top of that, she brought all of the dishes at one time, so we had no time to really enjoy the food before it got cold and we were full pretty quickly. When we asked to send one of the items back because there is no way we could eat it, she looked at us and said "well what do you want me to do about it." She then came back and told us she would take it off the bill, which she did not actually do. The food was okay, but nothing special. There are much better places to dine in River North."

  • "Amazing brunch/lunch with family. Everything we had was delicious. Brussels sprouts salad, pork belly on crispy rice with a poached egg and wagyu on crispy rice were the favorite dishes. The bloody marys were also really good with a unique flavor that none of us could pinpoint. My cousin took over ordering and the waiter spaced everything out so we didn't have too much food at once. The restaurant wasn't very busy (practically empty) when we got there at 11:30 but by the time we left around 2 it was packed. Great spot for a unique brunch."

  • "We celebrated our daughter's graduation from NWU at Sunda and had a wonderful meal sharing dishes which were all exquisite in taste and presentation. We all enjoyed the ambiance and it was a truly memorable evening. Thank you."

  • "I had heard it was great for dinner, well it featured a much reduced menu for lunch with nothing of note or different and despite 5 servers and 8 tables the service was slow and inattentive. I will not return."

  • "Great place, great time, great food, definitely a great Chicago sushi spot."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "We dined on a Wed night in June at 6:30. There were 5 of us and we were seated at a round table. Midway through dinner the noise level was so high we could hardly hear each other from across the table. Our waiter was great at first but disappeared after we ordered our meal. Had to ask a bus boy to get our waiter so that we could order more wine. He did not show up for another 15 min. By that time there was no point in ordering more wine because we were almost done with our food. The food was good but nothing special, we come from San Francisco so maybe Asian food was not a great choice for us to go to in Chicago. Because it is a small plate/share food restaurant, you can spend a fair amount of money without realizing it."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "My husband and I haven't been here since our little one was born almost 2 years ago now. We knew this wasn't a necessarily "kid-friendly" place but thought it could work for brunch. We were really pleased, the service was great, food came out quickly, and everything was delicious! Our toddler loved the pork buns, lumpia, and I'm forgetting the name of the noodle dish, but she loved that too. So did we! She didn't get the standard crayons and coloring sheet, but the food and service more than made up for that;)"

  • "This place was awesome, not just food but the experience. Only problem was I wished I knew all yourt party had to be there to actually sit at the table. We probably would of spent more money on drinks if we were able to sit & wait for friends at the table. A lil pricey, but not expensive. Just don't go there hungry lol"

  • "We were recommended Sunda by a vendor from Atlanta and had to visit his recommended spot. Food was good, but the service and ambience were better. This place is the closest thing to a supper club you'll get without the loud music. Gents, you will not be disappointed. Ladies, keep going there in groups!"

  • "I'm not a huge fan of Asian fusion (purist here) but this place was good! Brussel sprout slaw was the best! The spicy tuna "roll" was fine, but I wouldn't call it sushi (quotes are my own) bc there was no seaweed and the rice was fries. Still tasted very fresh but $16 was kind of ridiculous for 4 pieces. Oxtail dumplings were just alright. Tempura French toast & tiger shrimp were a bit too battered & fried for my liking (not much bread or shrimp). Ambiance was modern, trendy, & fun. Server was knowledgable and attentive. I probably wouldn't come back though."

  • "Sunda boasts a large, inventive menu with an interesting cocktail menu, well-thought out small plates and strong mains. Some dishes are head and shoulders above others, but all perform well. The hosting staff was not friendly on our latest visit but the servers are always kind, helpful (given the length of the menu, especially) and attentive. In the past year Sunda appears to have become more "see and be seen" as well."

  • "Dining with my niece was special enough, but I was truly amazed at the service, energetic atmosphere and exquisite cuisine-we started with the rock shrimp tempura-to die for/Brussels sprout salad/then on to Sunda steamed buns and Sundas signature crispy rice/THEN, the adobo braised pork belly and the red dragon-ultimately they remembered it was her birthday and perverse tend a delicious slice of coconut cake-drinks were awesome-a memorable night all around!"

  • "The ambiance and energy of the diners was great. The presentation of the food was terrific but I was disappointed with the taste of the duck fried rice. The ratio of rice to duck was very low and dry. Usually there is more egg to give the fried rice moisture and there was not even plum or sweet and sour sauce available. The soy sauce was too salty. I would still recommend the restaurant but not the duck fried rice. In addition, I am surprised the restaurant doesn't offer cream or half/half with coffee."

  • "Our server was talking (over explaining how the restaurant works) I hadn't even had a chance to open the menu when he asked me what I was drinking. I felt he was pushy and a bit impatient. Portions and prices were reasonable, however we would not return."

  • "Had a great lunch yesterday! Fresh, creative dishes and great service at David's table. Service was attentive and friendly without being fussy, food came out quickly and a lively atmosphere. Will be back for lunch more frequently."
