  • "If what you want is a bar that has subpar food, this is your place. The food is lacking in flavor and the restaurant is incredibly loud. We also had multiple different servers which felt unorganized. With so many great restaurants in the valley I would skip this one..."

  • "This is a very nice restaurant, but they'll have to work on the menu to find their vocation. We had the pho soup, beef tacos, arroz de Pato and the tuna ceviche. All ok but nothing to bring us back. The Lava cake was not warm and obviously pre cooked and paired with cinnamon ice cream (not the best match). Will not return."

  • "A unique mix of foods that are both delicious and original! I felt bad for the diners that only had 2 people only because there are too many menu items that need to be tasted and the more people you are dining with justifies ordering a wider variety of dishes to share. They also have delicious drink specials (not special prices, but new non menu items) .Décor is modern yet really comfortable."

  • "I've been to and experienced many fusion concepts before; this was my first time experiencing an Asian/Mexican venue and it was pretty cool. At first it was a little quirky, weird, but at the same time refreshing and modern. Brunch was enjoyable and the portions were very appropriate with very delectable tastes. "Real" Crab taste so much better than imitation, and it's great to see that featured here. The one thing that could have been better was the ease of service from the staff. It seems like there were a lot of inconsistency going on because this place is so new, and multiple dining practices were being tried all in one time. However, the manager is very nice; this place is a new favorite for my colleagues and I."

  • "What a great concept sushi and Mexican. Both were great and what a fun bar scene too."

  • "Food was quite good and different from most of the restaurants in Scottsdale and it definitely was a "happening scene" the Saturday night that we were there. The background music was too loud for my tastes(and made it difficult to carry on a conversation) but the younger people there did not seem to mind. Will definitely return in the future."

  • "One of the most anticipated openings in Scottsdale...however, I left confused and disappointed. The waiter was terrible. The food was average. I thought it would be fusion cooking however if you go here you must pick a side "Mexican" or "Japanese" the two flavors just don't mix (I'm sorry). I ordered fish tacos, guacamole & chips, California rolls, yellowtail sashimi, and a glass of Pinot....yep left feeling really sick it was WWIII in my stomach (Mexico vs Japan even though Fifa World Cup is over 😣😣😣)"

  • "If you are looking for a fun, very lively (with volume) venue with excellent food, this is the place. Another homerun by restaurateur, German Oslo !!"

  • "Excellent food, cocktails and service. The decor/ambiance was eh...fine. Pretty loud, like so many places today. We'll go back for the food, drinks and service at the price of our ears ringing.."

  • "We found the restaurant very beautiful, but noisy. The food was very tasty, but pricy for the small portions. We ordered more food because we were still hungry. Because it was a trendy restaurant, we wanted to try it. The blend of Mexican and Asian foods was really delicious. Would we come back?Maybe. We (4 in our party) felt that the high prices didn't justify the dishes, as the portions were small plates basically. We shared the lobster with crab, fried rice & skewered sea bass which had two skewers, but 2 bite sized pieces of fish on each. We were still hungry, so we ordered a sushi roll costing another $15. For 2 people it was a bill over $70, without alcohol or other drinks. Still was a lovely place to have dinner & great service."

  • "Over priced, under serviced, and a complete lack of timing (half the drinks, followed by, an appetizer, followed by two entrées, then the rest of the drinks, then the other appetizer, followed by the remaining entrées. The constant appologizing was just a perpetual reminder that the experience was sub par."

  • "The ambiance is incredible- the perfect place for a special occasion! Our service, however, was terrible. He didn't offer any suggestions, wasn't helpful, and I had to ask for more water. He was just abrupt in general. A friend of mine had excellent service earlier in the week so we'll give it one more try."

  • "When we walked in to Sumo Maya for the first time, we were impressed. Beautiful restaurant, beautiful people and loud music. It didn't take long for the place to lose its charm. We had already decided what to order before our server explained exactly how things worked but we went with our original choices...our food started coming out literally 5 minutes later. 30 minutes after we arrived we were finished with our $100 dinner. The only thing good about this was we were already tired of the loud music and we were really tired of sitting outside in July. They disguise their patio at night so you don't know they're taking you outside until you get there and feel the blast of heat."

  • "The best thing I had was the bacon wrapped Dates. Amazing!! Also the Chicken Mole was great. Definitely a place to go back to for sure. We got to catch the end of the Netherlands Brazil Match and it was great!"

  • "Yum, just yum. Everything was delicious and the ambiance as well as the front of house staff was awesome. I will definitely be back."

  • "The portions really are "tapas" and are quite small, but in a group you are able to try many new different flavors this way! Overall, the food was delicious with lots of new tastes. The restaurant was quite loud though, not the best place to have intimate conversation but that could be just because it just opened."

  • "Really enjoyed my dining experience at SumoMaya. I love tapas and Asian and Latin cuisine so what could be bad? the drinks! Of the 3 I tried I could moly choke down 1, 1 I sent back and the other I just couldn't finish. None of the flavors tasted natural and I just didn't enjoy them. The food was great, creative sushi, yummy calamari, succulent sea bass. All good. Server was fantastic and I wish I had gotten her name. The atmosphere is funky, cool and fun. I think this is best for small groups because there is is much fun stuff to try! I will go back!"

  • "I understand a few kinks when a place opens up but there is ZERO excuse when you have been open for a while & you still can't even remotely get it right. The food I wanted to like & no doubt besides the overgrown fake tree in the middle of dining room the place is very nice! But for the avid diner there is nothing more important than service! Our waiter was terrible, we waited forever to get guacamole & 5 salsa's you can't eat because they're in mini cups w. plastic spoons served with whole corn tortillas. 2 rolls took 30 minutes & the single entree we ordered came out before them. We had to ask for silverware, plates, more chips, more tea, etc... We will never go back and if you go go with caution. It is a cool place to see people :)"

  • "A marvelous combination of delicious food, top service, fun environment...,,,,an interesting and new approach combining two of our favorite styles, Mexican and Asian with marvelous tastes in small portions allowing you to sample many different dishes..Pad Tai is amazing - Guacamole awesome...Service doesn't get better...Waitstaff so friendly, well trained and all look like they just stepped out of a J Crew catalog...did not see one tattoo!!!"

  • "Sumomaya is a cross between Roka Akor and The Mission, but not as good as either. Menu is fun and interesting. The food is OK. Presentation was nice. Good people watching. It is very loud and hard to talk. It will be good for people into sushi rolls and such. It would be a nice place for a date. Serious foodies might prefer Posh or Shin Bay, but both will cost more. Prices were reasonable."

  • "SumoMaya has some work to do...they are still finding their groove and working out the kinks. The food was very good, the cocktails were mediocre and the service left much to be desired. We had hiccups from start to finish - a manager did drop by our table to apologize during dinner service (much appreciated), as she was made aware of a few issues. If they focus on training, the experience would have been wonderful!"

  • "We made reservations and were seating fairly quickly upon arrival. The restaurant was busy but had a fun vibe. We ordered several dishes to share and each one that came out was better than the next. The vegetable dishes were some out favorites! We will definitely be back."

  • "Unbelievable food, unbelievable staff, unbelievable experience!"

  • "Some of the food was great and some of it ok. It took a long time for our drinks to come and the food started arriving first. My biggest issue with the restaurant is the noise level is excessive! In the rating section I can't get the noise level to light up four bars or that's what I would have rated the noise level. The music is extremely loud and what is being played fits a night club not a restaurant. Yet there were very large tv screens over the bar playing sports so is it supposed to be a sports bar. We all felt the owner was confused as to what he wanted his restaurant to be and at this time we won't return."

  • "We made our reservation one week early for a friday evening , told them we wanted a nice table to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. Unfortunetley, we were seated at a table by the bar, dont think anyone really cared about our request. The food was good and the atmosphere is very loud and club like. We had a 8-9 Tapas and drinks. truly feel the restaurant wants to appeal to high end market, but actually appeals to young club market spending on drinks , not on the food."

  • "Costly for what you get both in quality and quantity. Miniature "tacos" totally fell apart when trying to them. Dough barely cooked and tasteless. The chicken filling tasteless, mushroom filling good. There was not more that a tablespoon of filling on each "taco". Had to ask for a fork. Restaurants should not assume what utensils you should eat with. Not sure the crumbled up "taco" could have been eaten with chop sticks. The crispy chicken mole was tasty, but the chicken certainly was not crispy. Since there was only 2 of us dining we did not order the 3-5 items apiece as was suggested. The three items ordered was enough for us to know that we will not be returning to SumoMayo. I think fusion cuisine is a catch phrase for undecided chefs."

  • "Though noisy and a little frenetic, our wait person led us through a wonderful meal at Sumo Maya. Though a bit pricy ( something like $6.00 a rib) and only 2 per order, the ribs were perfectly glazed and had an Asian fall off the bone taste. Our dining partners shared their short rib roll. Great idea! Great texture and rich taste . Different take on sushi rolls. My shrimp ceviche was fair to good. A little to sweet and a little more texture with avocado taking over the shrimp. My wife's shaking beef was well prepared and delicious. Give them a try. You will be glad you did"

  • "Went here with high expectations and they were met. Beautiful design, great service and a varied and tasty menu. Everything we ordered was spectacular. The tuna ceviche is served in a coconut with plantain chips and not only looks amazing, tastes amazing. Another starter we really enjoyed were the Rock Shrimp Tempura. So crunchy and flavorful. We also had many other items, including the Suzuki sushi roll. Frankly, it was hard to narrow it down as we saw so many choices we wanted to try. Cocktails did not disappoint either. The Blood Orange Margarita was excellent as was the Sake Sangria. Loved our meal here and cannot wait to head back."

  • "Very vibrant, edgy menu. Some items were standouts -- e.g. mushroom tacos and California rolls (amazing!). Others were hard to eat -- e.g. Suzuki rolls were waaaaay too spicy. There are a lot of wait staff kinks to work out. For example, I asked for a bottle of full bodied, dry sake. The waiter brought a sake that was weak and sweet. He did replace it with a better choice. The other big issue is that the noise level is deafening. I love a vibrant, energetic restaurant. But not to the point that I had to scream to talk to my dining companions."

  • "I was incredibly impressed with the creativity and flavors of the nearly 9 items we tried as a group. Among all the foodie concept places I have been - this was one of the most outstanding experiences. They had been open for less than a week and there were almost no signs of the early problems of restaurants getting their stride."

  • "We were sat & after waiting 15mins for service, finally asked for some. We tried a wide variety of food, (sushi, tacos, duck, mole) was all either mediocre or down right inedible. The sun blares through the windows, blinding diners. Worst meal I've had in years!"

  • "At long last, we finally have a great sushi restaurant in Scottsdale, that has a mexican flair. The sushi here is outstanding. No fake crab mix rolls here that seem to have infested the valley at other sushi places. The sushi is reminiscent of rolls I've had at Nobu and Morimoto. The veggie side dishes are excellent. The ramen and other noodle dishes are well worth trying. Cocktails are excellent along with the wine selection. I need to reiterate. For an area like Scottsdale, this type of quality restaurant should have been opened ages ago but for some reason not one has. This is the type of restaurant that would thrive in LA, SF and NY. I'm already reserving my next visit."
