A word from Summer House
The California-influenced, American restaurant features a wood-fire grill as its centerpiece and will dish out an ever-changing menu that spotlights locally-sourced produce & ingredients whenever possible. In addition to simply prepared proteins and a large selection of market vegetables, Summer House Santa Monica also boasts Chef Mahin’s signature artisanal bread program, an extensive wine list, fresh-squeezed juices and a wide array of pastry & sweets. Seeking to make diners feel at-home, the restaurant has been designed to evoke the atmosphere of a summer beach house with whitewashed woods, warm tones and a large glass ceiling positioned directly over the dining room that brings the outside in no matter what the season. An open kitchen outfitted in earth-toned tiling and a five-foot, wood-fire grill that emulates a home hearth further fosters the comfortable atmosphere.

Now open for Lunch on Fridays from 11am-4pm and Saturdays & Sundays for our weekend Brunch 8am-3pm!

  • "Beautiful inside and great food at a great price! Great zero proof cocktails and had something for everyone"

  • "Lettuce Entertain you does it again. Another fantastic LEY eatery. Fabulous decor and fantastic food. Fish tacos were some of the best I've ever had. Felt just like we were in Santa Monica!"

  • "Had been dying to try for a long time unfortunately the food (I had the fish tacos) were super bland. I was having lunch with my mother and she had the burger and said it was fine. You can't really expect too much from a burger in fairness. What really annoyed me was how condescending our waiter was. From the moment he sat down he was full of it. He was also so scatty. I had to ask twice for a wine cooler for the bottle of white wine we order. All in all just pretty disappointed"

  • "This is a great brunch place. The vaulted ceiling with the skylights is fantastic. The food is good except that the only complaint is that two of the three dishes that were brought out for brunch were cold. I have had brunch here multiple times and this did not occur previously."

  • "I'd heard a lot about Summer House and was really excited to go here with three out of town guests. However, our brunch experience left me feeling pretty "meh". While the ambiance and food were both top notch, the service left a lot to be desired. Our table of four was served our meals over a course of about 10 minutes, so we couldn't all enjoy our food at the same time. Also, there were a few mistakes like bringing out toast when they had upgraded to an English muffin and letting our water glasses go empty several times. I think most of the mistakes were kitchen related and not due to our waitress. Bottom line, I'd give it another try, but if I have a similar experience again, I won't be back for a third time."

  • "This place is just too good. I love the vibe and atmosphere. My mom and sister were in town and I chose to take them here. It did not disappoint. Fun options, great brunch drink menu and super friendly staff. This is now my go to for visitors."

  • "Ambiance, service - can't be beat. Food, sub-par. I got the egg-white omelette... Where was the salsa? no flavor!"

  • "This place is a great spot to have a romantic dinner on a nice summer evening. The location and ambiance is very good, the proximity to Halsted street isn't a problem. The food and wines were varied. I took my girlfriend here for our one year anniversary and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had the caramelized brussel sprouts and fluke ceviche to start, both were excellent. For our main courses we choose the maine lobster orecchiette and steak frites, which were split up for both of us, a nice gesture by the waiting staff! We choose a bottle of red Grenache wine from Australia with our meal and it was a great recommendation. This was after trying six others! The waiter was very helpful and added to the enjoyment of our experience here."

  • "Came here with some friends for a bday party. The ambiance is very cool, and pretty much every patron there was beautiful (seriously!). The food was very fresh, but some of it was underwhelming. Skip the tuna tostadas, boring. I had the fish tacos which were really good and fun to put together. The ice cream flavors change, but we had smoked sea salt chocolate...SO GOOD! It's all made in house, and the quality comes through. This is a Lettuce Entertain You venture so bring your rewards card!"

  • "Summer House is just a terrific spot with great food in a VERY California atmosphere. Both the food and service were excellent and the surroundings are so cool that after being there for about an hour we actually felt like we were sitting in a sunny California restaurant. Kudos to LEY for hitting the mark yet again."

  • "Setting is really lovely! The tables are too close together and around 7 the noise level is deafening!!"

  • "delicious food with a flair Once again, disappointed with service. Need not be a complainer, but needed to ask for table to be cleared for dessert."
    Dined on 7/13/2014
  • "Not at all what I expected. The noise level was unbearably loud, it was impossible to have any conversation. This was planned as a birthday dinner for just the two of us, that was impossible given that we couldn't hear each other. The hostess was competent, but certainly not friendly. The service was fine, and the food was good enough. We were so uncomfortable with the noise level we only ordered entrees and were out the door in less than 45 mins. I will never go back, and would not recommend."

  • "I had to make a reservation over a month in advance just to get a table on a Saturday, so my expectations were sky high. Yet, aside from the beautiful scenery (both the room and the people), the experience could only be described as mediocre. Nothing I ate made an impression, and the best dish from the entire evening was the brussel sprouts, which should not be the case when you are spending close to $300 for 4 people. None of my fellow diners had much good to say about what they ordered and we were all left feeling disappointed and somewhat ripped off. The only saving grace from the entire evening was the apple fritter cookie my friend purchased at the bakery counter on the way out, but it wasn't quite enough to sweeten our mood."

  • "We've been here twice this year and both times every course was perfection. The décor is very light and airy. It's a little too popular however when one can't get a reservation after 4:30 pm on a Saturday."

  • "Went here for my birthday and it was amazing. Great food (especially gluten free). Very friendly staff and great atmosphere. The inside is better than the "patio" as it feels like your outside. The patio is on a busy street so nothing special there."

  • "I have been to Summer House 4 times. This past Tuesday was one of the worst dining experiences I have had! Our waitress took 20 minutes to get to our table, people kept trying to take our plates before we were done eating, no silverware for over 5 minutes while our food was there, no tortillas for tacos for even longer. It was just a mess and I was pretty disappointed. Overall the good was good- my food was cold by the time I had silverware to eat it. The other times I have been to Summer House there has been pretty good service."

  • "Our salads were delicious. It is a VERY noisy place, but that's the opinion of a woman who is, probably, old enough to be the grandmother of most of the customers!"

  • "Great atmosphere. Can't wait to return in the winter time."

  • "Summerhouse is the hottest Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant in Lincoln Park. The food, ambiance, and service is outstanding! I went with my parents for dinner on July 4th and because we couldn't decide on just one meal, we decided to go "tapas style" and chose different food items to share and taste. From the fish tacos, Korean pork lettuce cups, ahi tuna tostadas, guacamole, and fresh burrata, we continued to be impressed with each item we tried. This is our new favorite Lettuce Restaurant and we're so happy it is located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood!"

  • "My friend and I both had the trout on a bed of mashed potatoes. It was great! Also loved the salad. Nice ambiance. Very California. We ate early (5:30) on a beautiful July day and it was nice and bright with the retractible roof. Would go again, and recommend it to others."

  • "... very busy Summer night ... some chocolate crumbs lying around on reception chairs near the take out bakery dirtied my husbands pants as he sat down while waiting. We alerted staff."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "The wine and cocktails are good, we had something with Rosemary in it and it definitely was good. For dinner we had the fish tacos, Korean tacos and the chicken dish- all of which were good. We also tried the guacamole w/chips and the brussell sprouts, both because the server claimed they were the house specialties, and they were both just OK. My problem really was that there were a lot of children in the restaurant. When I looked around a counted, around a quarter of the tables from where I was sitting had children at them. Not my idea of a fun city night out! Overall, I'd come back- probably try brunch next time, and hope the kids are at home."

  • "Really enjoyed dining here. The restaurant makes you feel like you are not in Chicago which is kind of cool. The food was great and so were the drinks!"

  • "i had a reservation and got there a few minutes late. i understood maybe i'd have to wait a minute. they told me it would be a few minutes and they'd text me. 30 minutes pass during which i peeked around by the host stand to make sure they knew i was still waiting and no text. i finally asked and was told they texted me twice. i had good service and no texts, and they had my correct number. that's fine, and it wouldn't have been a problem but they were not apologetic and made it seem like it was my fault. meanwhile they were overly apologetic to a lady who they had to tell she could sit at the bar without waiting but not at a hightop. food was good. took too long to get drinks. cute spot so i might be back but the service wasn't great."

  • "Have to confess that I really liked Tillie's that was at this location. At first I was a little put off by the new decor but have to admit that is much, much nicer. It is much brighter and much more open and well, summery. But the food is what really impressed me. Loved the wood grilled items and the amazing salads. Didn't try one but have to come back to try what looked to be cool Bloody Mary's as well. Had an enjoyable experience with the great service I always expect at a Lettuce restaurant."

  • "I would recommend this restaurant to anyone as it was beautiful inside, the food was delish and the entire ambience was a cool, laid back...very California vibe!"

  • "I really want to love this place so I will be back to give it another try. Our reservation was late because that's all that was available on open table. Out food was ok, nothing spectacular but service was problem. I understand as it gets late people want to wrap up at work but it was little obvious our server rushed us and even grabbed the check before I barely closed the book. That was kind of rude, I work in public service and if I ever were to grab money from someone's hand I'm sure they would think that's rude too"

  • "Great place all around. Had an early dinner on a Saturday (4:30) and the place was packed with kids. If this isn't your thing I'd try going later. The ambience was great, love the "ocean breeze" provided in the center dining area. Do NOT leave without grabbing a chocolate chip cookie topped with Rice Krispie treats. A must."

  • "Summer House is a great new LYE entry- the menu is varied with a good wine and cocktail list. The decor of the restaurant is really unique- you feel like you are actually in Santa Monica! I was here for a very early Saturday brunch and our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. The brunch menu is varied and everything we had was delicious. The fresh bakery case when you walk in is a nice touch! Highly recommend it!"

  • "I came to summer house for my friend's birthday lunch. We were happy to get a reservation during the day as it was not possible for that night. When we got there 15 minutes early, we saw many open tables. We were told that our table was not ready yet, which was odd. We waited at the bar and got seated at exactly 1pm. The lunch menu was underwhelming but the chips and guac were really good. They delivered a birthday dessert (by request) with a candle. It was a hot cookie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Our waiter was good but the ambiance is better here than the food. I had a cobb salad which was nothing special."

  • "My dining experience at Summer House was almost perfect. We started out with the Hamachi Tar Tar which was incredible. My Fiance and I split the Losbter Pasta and the Trout, both where also incredible. They claim that the Trout is not farmed which is nearly impossible to find in the Chicago area, and the fish was cooked perfectly. The Lobster Pasta was a small portion and kinda spicy but we like spicy! We then ordered the chocolate cake and it did not disappoint. The one complaint I have is they were out of their house cab, and it was still on the wine list. We went with the Chardonnay which was fine and probably more fitting with our meal but I am a die hard cab lover and was a little disappointed."

  • "This is such a fun new restaurant on the Chicago scene. It really does have a California feel. The décor is bright, open, rustic, beachy chic. The menu offers something for everyone and it's fun to mix and match. You do not have to order a main course, you can order small plates. The wait staff is very friendly, young and will to help. Overall we will go back. It is not a once and "been there" kinda place :)"

  • "Such a fun atmosphere to socialize and eat! I would highly recommend! I didn't particularly like everything we ordered (ie the Korean pork tacos - I'm Korean and it didn't taste anything like Korean-seasoned pork), but there were some other delish items. Server was nice and helpful."

  • "Best new LEY reataurant. Tasty, clean food with plenty of healthy options. Don't miss the shaved veggie salad and tuna tostadas. Save room for a cookie - even the GF ones are to die for."

  • "Have dined at Summer House twice. The first time, we had a lot of apps and vegetable sides and loved everything, especially the cauliflower. The room under the glass canopy has a great, sunny vibe. The bakery out front turns out exceptional cookies. The second time, I tried the fish tacos and was beyond disappointed. Totally lacked flavor, about as boring as fish tacos can be. The tortillas were served uncovered on a plate. Seriously? The accompaniments had no interest, or kick. The fish tasted unseasoned. The $25 price is mystifying, since in Chicago they are competing against some of the best Mexican restaurants in the country that charge half that. In sum: definitely go to Summer House, just don't the fish tacos."
