A word from Summer House
The California-influenced, American restaurant features a wood-fire grill as its centerpiece and will dish out an ever-changing menu that spotlights locally-sourced produce & ingredients whenever possible. In addition to simply prepared proteins and a large selection of market vegetables, Summer House Santa Monica also boasts Chef Mahin’s signature artisanal bread program, an extensive wine list, fresh-squeezed juices and a wide array of pastry & sweets. Seeking to make diners feel at-home, the restaurant has been designed to evoke the atmosphere of a summer beach house with whitewashed woods, warm tones and a large glass ceiling positioned directly over the dining room that brings the outside in no matter what the season. An open kitchen outfitted in earth-toned tiling and a five-foot, wood-fire grill that emulates a home hearth further fosters the comfortable atmosphere.

Now open for Lunch on Fridays from 11am-4pm and Saturdays & Sundays for our weekend Brunch 8am-3pm!

Diner Reviews
  • "The specialty cocktails are fantastic. It is a casual place where you feel like you are sitting in an outdoor patio due to the glass ceiling. You have an option to order small plates (which we did) or individual meals. Each small plate we tried was delicious especially the calamari. If you don't have room for dessert, you can pick out a cookie from the treat case to take with you. The coffee from Dark Matter was delicious. Service was attentive & they have valet parking."

  • "Great ambiance, friendly wait staff - esp Brittany our gem of a waitress:). Love to that they keep the wine right near the tables vs having to have the server wait in line@ the bar...smart -!"

  • "The space is beautiful. My friends and I thought it was over priced for the menu selections. I think you can get more for your money and more interesting dishes at many other places in the city. I've heard brunch here is good but I only experienced dinner here. Not sure that I would come back."

  • "Great LEY restaurant, bright and airy. My entire Family loves Summer House my teenage daughter loves the menu as I do and my husband like the fun cocktail list."

  • "Our server was very attentive. The only blips in service I believe would be attributed to a busy kitchen. A few of the side items were delivered quite a bit later than our main courses. Otherwise was very enjoyable evening."

  • "This is a wonderful place for people watching. We had a difficult time deciding what to order; the menu was inviting and extensive. Definitely want to go back. The hash brown eggs Benedict was delicious and so were the Mexican eggs."

  • "This is the 2nd time I've been to this restaurant. I came the 1st time for dinner and enjoyed that experience more than the recent brunch experience. I felt the food was just mediocre, not great for brunch. However, it's definitely a hot spot, judging by how many people were there both times I've been there for food. I've also been to the bar and restaurant attached to the space, and it was a good experience overall as well. I am definitely a foodie, and regularly try new restaurants in Chicago. I just don't feel like any of the food here stands out, compared to other places I've been to. I find the dishes lacking in flavor, which I'm sure is great for the average palate, I just prefer more complexity."

  • "So delicious and great summery vibe! Must order the biscuits! And must have a cookie for dessert or on the way out!"

  • "We will definitely return due to excellent food and pretty , open dining area . The front desk /service needs a lot of help. They seem unable to manage the check in a typical fashion .We arrived early for a 6pm reservation and were told I would receive a text of when our table would be ready . That time came and went while I saw comparable sized tables being seated upon arrival . I finally went back up to the front desk and the lady said our table was ready - there was never a text . Our waitress also was not attentive on any level , this was a birthday dinner and this was pointed out at check in . But our order was wonderful - the artichoke dip , roasted cauliflower and veggie salad to start with various entrees that were perfect!!"

  • "Such a great departure from dark and stuffy. Food was great. Loved the Lobster pasta and the warm biscuits are worth the wait."

  • "Atmosphere is fantastic...love Vitamin D room. Great menu, tasty food, perfect portion sizes. Service was a bit slow, but it was very busy. The chocolate chip cookies with rice crispy treats on top...oh my goodness - SO delicious. Thank you for a wonderful Saturday afternoon lunch experience."

  • "Great ambiance...OK service...just OK food. Try the tuna tostada or any salad. Skip the fish tacos (you have to make them yourself). Skip the lobster orecchiette (the pasta is not orecchiette...no truffle flavor). I'd go back to try the Stella Barra pizza."

  • "I have been to Sunnerhouse 4 times recently - both with friends for lunch and a business dinner.Loved the trout, lobster pasta, salmon over shaved salad, chicken sandwitch. This time with friends ordered the Cobb salad. It came in a huge bowl filled to about 1/4 full - way too small for an entre salad, mostly a few Boston lettuce leaves and a few avocado pieces. Very disappointed in the Cobb salad - should have sent it back! My entre of a Chicken sandwitch was giant compared to the wimpy Cobb"

  • "my favorite restaurant during my visit in chicago. felt like a hamptons beach house/ a restaurant straight out of santa monica pier. I want to go back so badly"

  • "Great food and service. I had to wait a few minutes to be seated although I had made reservations over two weeks in advance, but it was not a major problem. The staff is very friendly and my waiter did a great job explaining the menu and providing recommendations."

  • "this was our 3rd time dining here. the brunch menu seemed too limited. the restaurant didnt seem very busy, but service seemed slower than usual. the food items we picked however were excellent, notably the ahi tuna tostidos(?), the gruyere grilled cheese sandwich and the special wheat pasta. we will certainly be back!"

  • "If you are in the area, and want to experience the people of that area of Chicago, it is very nice. Food is pretty much standard LEYE food. Well done, but nothing special."
    Dined on 8/17/2014
  • "The first time we dined there we had great service from our server, but the second time our server wasn't that great. I understand it was a busy Sunday, but she would take forever with small things like cream for the coffee or making sure we all had utensils."

  • "It must be.......poor food, worse service, older men ogling large groups of younger women. 20 mins to get your drink order is not a great way to start your evening. I will say the Calamari was very good. Everything else; Palm Fizz cocktail, fish tacos, double decker Turkey Burger (that had only one patty- how does that make it a double decker?) & over spiced cauliflower - was bad, forgettable & bland. Never seeing your server (Britney) until she wants to give you the bill - that's a nice touch! Way too loud! We've been here twice now - once for brunch & now for dinner. Both experiences left all of us with a bad taste in our mouth. It's a nicely decorated space but that's about all I have to say that is positive."

  • "Loved the girls Birthday dinner we had at Summer House. You feel like you are outdoors with the atrium roof and lush ferns overhead. The service was perfect and the vibe was lively and fun, but we could hear each other completely without having to shout! The food was fresh and delicious too."
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "Food was cold. Made a big deal that they had no tables between 5 and 9PM on a Thursday evening. Restaurant was 1/2 full all evening....Won't rush back."
    Dined on 8/14/2014
  • "If your not familiar with this restaurant, they have a bar side which is covered and then an open dining area where the roof can open and close. I made a reservation two weeks in advance and when we arrived, the hostess was going to seat us in the bar side. We asked if we could wait for a table on the dining side of the restaurant and they said they would give us the next available table. A beautiful booth along the wall just cleared and we were only waiting for about 5 minutes in the lobby. We were so excited except the hostess decided to give the booth to another party because she told us that she texted us and we didn't respond. My number on Open Table is a land line! Food is overpriced for what you get and our menus had food on them."

  • "Great vibe although a bit confusing with the pizza place next door. Waiter was non plussed when we were considering moving to the other side but he warmed."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "The food was absolutely delicious. Thai curry mussels, Maine lobster pasta, and adobe smoked halibut. Great wine list too. Unfortunately, we had to wait an extra 20 minutes after our reservation time but the service beyond that was top notch."

  • "This was my second time eating there. The food was fresh and fantastic! Service was great, I took my whole family this time and everyone really seem to like it. I had the special pasta with lobster very good, my daughters had the fish tacos which were excellent. My only complaint would be that the portions are kind of small. Great cookies for dessert. Next time I will try your pizza place next door. It really looks good."

  • "Each dish brought to the table was better than that one before it. It just kept getting better. And considering how good the baked biscuit appetizers were, that's quite the feat!"

  • "I'd wanted to go to Summer House for a while and it did not disappoint! I would go back in a heartbeat."
    Dined on 8/10/2014
  • "I love summer house. The last time I was there it was an awesome experience so I thought id take my boyfriend for brunch. The server seemed extremely over whelmed which I can understand as I use to serve and bartend but each drink probably took about 10-15 min to receive. He never check on us after we received our food or else he would have known I never relieved my hash browns. I will def be back again. But would hope for much more attentive service"

  • "Great atmosphere and food! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting to try something new with a great atmosphere. If you have room, the cookies they sell are amazing."

  • "When moving from a reservation for 3 to 2, we ended up with a high top table beside the bar. My chair was metal and therefore cold under my dress. The bar was very loud at 7pm. We ordered a watermelon non alcoholic drink, which didn't taste like watermelon and was bitter. The waitress asked how we liked it and exchanged mine for a lake lemonade which was slightly better; I drank about a quarter if it. It was frothy and tasted very strange, not flavorful at all. The buratta she suggested was nice, as was the curried quinoa, prepared well and not something I would typically order, so I was impressed."

  • "Summer House greets you with a bakery display that gets your mouth watering. It's a welcome mat unlike any other Chicago restaurant, and evokes the vibe of a California, seaside eatery. Wonderful ambiance, sitting in a glass enclosed dining room, with sunshine streaming in. A menu filled with an array of well prepared, well presented dishes, which allow you to eat light, dine or really indulge your culinary senses. Attentive staff, eager to guide you through the menu. Good place for a special occasion. It's also a great people watching place, which attracts a wide variety of diners, from every age group, primarily a young-ish crowd, but welcoming to every age. Highly recommended."
