Diner Reviews
  • "I ate at the Studio with a party of 6. The location, view, and ambiance are outstanding at this restaurant. The service is also very good. However, as the night progressed, the attention paid to us by our waiters progressively declined. Because the evening started out with such excellent service, it was particularly noticeable when we were left alone for extended periods of time. The endive salad and scallops were a highlight of my meal. The salad was about as close to perfect as you could get. The cocktails were also excellent. However, the swordfish main course was over cooked on the outside and undercooked within. Though beautiful to look at, it was otherwise mediocre, which was disappointing after two excellent appetizers."

  • "This place is hard to beat! The setting, food, and service are out of this world and worth every penny and the drive from LA. Marnie was outstanding! If you are faint of heart and unwilling to spend 100 plus per person, this is not the place for you. The sunset was amazing. Take your time, have drinks in the lounge in the lobby before dinner and sit in front of the fire pit afterwards. Very special place."

  • "the setting is spectacular and the service inpecable. The food started out promising with a nice gazpachio, and a delicious shashimi. moving to the third course, a pasta with dungeness crab, a note of disapointment. The crab was not as fresh tasting or as flavorful as was expected. the souce was delicate and suitable however. Main course disappointed. The halibut was slightly overcooked and dry. The sorel sauce was excellant, however, but not enough to overcome the dryness of the fish. a $55 entre should be perfect. all in all it was a very enjoyable evening and there service was exceptional, but for a meal in this price range, i am sorry to say, Studio slightly missed the mark."

  • "Another outstanding dinner at the Studio. This time we brought friends to share the special experience. We enjoyed older vintage wines that we had not had in years, the food and service were exceptional as always. It was delightful to be able to chat without a lot of noise and enjoy the perfect sunset."

  • "We have enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at Studio for the past five years, in addition to other special occasions. The food is always beautiful to look at and delicious to taste, the service is unmatched, and a more breathtaking view cannot be found! The desserts of Vanilla Roasted Pineapple and Warm Berry Tart topped off an already wonderful meal. We continue coming back because we know we will not be disappointed."

  • "Was so excited to bring my girlfriend to the studio. The entire evening was ruined by a table of 8 business people who were loud and rude. The guys were telling rude jokes got louder as the evening progressed. Staff did nothing to calm them down as their bill was 4 times bigger than mine. Will skip this resort for any further reservations in the future. Wasted $500 and ruined our entire night."

  • "The Montage is a wonderful place for anniversary celebrations. All tables indoors and outdoors have a beautiful view. The restaurant interior is beautiful. The waiters are very knowledgeable about the menu items. Food was fantastic! I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection. We wish we had discovered this place many years ago. We are coming back again!"

  • "We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at the Studio, and received the best attention / service, with great food, in a beautiful setting."

  • "Living in the area, we've dined at the studio a number of times, usually for special occasions or when we want a romantic evening. Dinner at the studio can be an experience. We wanted it to be, and it was. Reservations were for 7, but we sat outside for an hour watching the sun set before going to our window table. No problem. My wife, a vegan, was well-accommodated with an excellent 5-course vegan dinner. I had the best Caesar salad I've had in a long time, and my tenderloin was excellent. But our desert was the best -- caramel ice cream in a chocolate shell. Hot fudge, poured at the table, partially melted the ice cream and the result was a perfect finish for the evening. All Studio people were courteous and accommodating."

  • "Overall we were so disappointed because of the food choices and the tiny servings. We were all still hungry and for the price of the food it was embarrassing as it was my daughter and her husbands first time there. My husband and have been there before and it was perfect, what happened? The service was fantastic the ambiance was perfect but we will never come back."

  • "We trully enjoyed our evening at this restaurant. Customer service was great( too many waiters, but it was nice to be treated special).Portions for the prices were little bit small, but in French cuisine that what we should expect . My hubby loved the coffee, I loved my lobster soup.Every one left happy. I love Montage and peaceful settings.Thank you for taking care of us."

  • "You are definitely paying for the location and view here. I knocked off two stars for the continuous up sell from the server! I could tell he was annoyed when we kept saying "no thank you." We had a bottle of red wine but he still tried to get us to buy a glass of champagne, then a glass of white wine, then appetizers, then a salad.....etc. Is was too much! It was a turn off. We had the John Dory fish, which was good but for $55 I expected a little more "wow" factor. Oh and I should mention that I was queasy for several hours after dinner. Not sure if it was the fish for sure but I do suspect it was since my husband said he also felt a little queasy. Not sure if I would go back or not."

  • "We have visited Studio several times, and they never fail to impress. Our cocktail waitress took time to take our pictures at the table and recommended a spot on the adjacent lawn for another shot with the ocean as background. We all ordered different dishes. Seafood lovers will appreciate the John Dory which arrived nice and hot garnished with gnocchi and peas; my wife raved about the sauteed duck breast. Our son (the birthday boy) enjoyed the grilled beef tenderloin and shared the leek-spinach puree. On a previous visit, I ordered steak tartare for an appetizer (not on the menu but the chef made it special). Yes, it's expensive, and maybe we treat ourselves to Studio two or three times a year...still, well worth it."

  • "This is a beautiful hotel and the restaurant has an incredible view of the ocean and sunset. Saying that, it was a very expensive view. The food is good but not memorable and for the price it should have been a huge WOW and it wasn't close. The other aspect that was incredibly annoying (but the wait staff was wonderful in dealing with it- fortunately they could turn off individual speakers outside where we sat)- they had the worst and most inappropriate music playing- electronic pop music. This is an elegant, sophisticated restaurant and at best, the music they played may have been acceptable at a beach bar or at the pool. To allow this music to be played shows a remarkable lack of understanding of who they are."

  • "Truly special venue. Each course was exceptional, both in terms of presentation and taste. Oysters were incredible, as were the scallops and fish dishes. Sitting outdoors, with the Pacific Ocean at our feet, a curious rabbit repeatedly visiting, very special. The wine list was pressive and service was outstanding."

  • "Looking forward to a romantic dinner with my sweetheart. Had been here last in 2010. Hostess took us to the worst table in the room (right by the kitchen where waitstaff hustled right next to you--in and out). They told us they would get another table, had us wait, then brought us to the one next door and on that aisle--embarrassing! Finally, a manager found us a lovely table by the window. The waiter rushed us to order. We weren't ready--as we wanted to relax & enjoy a leisurely meal. We ordered hot appetizers--they were lukewarm. Entrees also tepid. While we were talking, the waiter picked up my menu, opened it, & rudely shoved it at me. I was horrified, as was my date. Sommelier good; wine ($400) awesome. Inept waiter. "

  • "I'm not going to pretend that this place is a value for money, and while it's not quite in the French Laundry/ Alinea/ etc tier, this is a fantastic experience in Laguna. The food is excellent, the service is ridiculously attentive with several servers watching out for us, and the view is unbeatable. The crab cavatelli, the venison loin, and the Guanaja chocolate sphere were real standouts. If you are a certified wine snob the phone book of a wine list should keep you happy for hours. If you are not (like me), don't be intimidated by all the 3-digit and 4-digit price tag bottles. I just told the server I didn't want to go too crazy and he suggested a great bottle for just over $100 which qualifies as a bargain at the Montage."

  • "You have to experience Studio at least once in your life to feel whole and complete. The location is truly heavenly and the cuisine and service are one of a kind. Chef Craig is hands down, the best chef in OC and one to follow with his deliciously thoughtful and creative creations that leave you wanting to schedule your return visit to Studio before you've even left. Thank you Studio for bringing such a talent to our OC and for providing the best service I've ever received in any restaurant. Truly a memory and dining experience that we'll cherish and speak of often and fondly! "

  • "EVEN WITH RESERVATIONS, THEY WANTED TO GIVE US A TABLE OUTSIDE WHEN I REQUESTED INSIDE. WHEN I WANTED TO CHANGE TABLES THEIR ATTITUDE WAS HORRIBLE AND THEY GAVE US A TABLE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE KITCHEN. IT GOT WORSE FROM THERE WITH ATTITUDES FROM THE WAITERS TO THE HOST. THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE AND I WOULD NEVER GO BACK NOR WOULD I EVER REFER THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE"

The long table was a perfect location and semi private which made for good toasting. Thanks Studio, you did it again! Special thanks to Corey for coordinating the dinner so well! Jim and friends"

  • "I had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Studio. The menu is amazing - everything looked appetizing - and the dishes we chose were superb. The pace of the courses was perfect. Even the cocktails were excellent and generous. We had 6:45 pm reservations so we caught the sunset over the water. The service was the best we've had since L'Orangerie closed in Los Angeles. The experience is worth the price for a special occassion."

  • "My girlfriend and I were attending a conference at the Ritz-Carlton and I thought this would make a great opportunity to propose. I did some internet research looking for the perfect restaurant with an excellent wine list, fairly close to our hotel, with a patio to dine under the stars, and a scenic view of the ocean. Studio at Montage met my criteria perfectly. I reserved a limo to take us to dinner and after ordering a nice bottle of wine I read her a love letter to the tune of "When Harry met Sally", bent down on one knee and asked her to marry me. The waiter brought us champagne that he and his wife had shared the night they got engaged and they provided a complimentary dessert with "Congratulations" written with chocolate syrup."

  • "The food was spectacular, every new dish became the favorite as we tasted it; there was so much more we still wanted to try at the end of the night we went back again two days later. Truly exceptional service; we dine all over the world and I honestly don’t think I have had such wonderful service anywhere. This is a dining experience not to be missed."

  • "Was expecting a 'wow' experience - in all aspects. Food was disappointing. Best dishes were the hamachi and the crab cavatelli. For the first time in over 10 years, i sent back my entree - a muscovy duck which was gamey and tough. It was quickly exchanged, with no problem for a delicious John Dory. Had exceptional service from Roger. He made everything special. Just didn't have a wow - which for the money - was expected."
