Diner Reviews
  • "Had a 7:30pm reservation on a Saturday night. Was very crowded and noisy, but we didn't mind waiting for about 15 minutes to be seated. Our waiter promptly took our drink order and came back to tell us about the specials. Service was fantastic - waiter was very attentive, although it was busy, and personable. Great food, a bit expensive. Had the mushroom ravioli for an appetizer, which was over-the-top delicious. I had the lamb special and husband had the steak special - both were fabulous. Only issue was the noise level - tables are on top of each other for maximum number of guests so it was very loud. All in all, a perfect evening."

  • "My wife and I were flying to the Caribbean and stayed at the airport Hilton so we went to Strega for dinner the night before. We had a great meal, nice bottle of wine and were immediately in vacation mode."

  • "Very small, very tight, very dark. The service and food were great. no full bar, which in part is my fault for not asking. The table we sat at was really small and did not have enough room for all the plates and glasses. Over all not horrible, but will probebly choose another place next time. Very cool the the 6 movies playing on the TVs"

  • "I had a party of 6 people meeting up from different locations in Boston, and we all left early to make it to our 8:00 reservation on time. Four of us arrived early, but my friend and her boyfriend informed us they were stuck in traffic. When I went to check in with the hostess, I was not greeted with warmth because my entire party wasn't present. I do understand that policy states that the entire party must be present to sit down; however my friends were on their way and stuck in traffic, and we were more than ready to start ordering wine and appetizers. We were asked to wait in the bar area, where we were in the way of waiters and busboys. Despite our rude start, our waiter, Carl, was phenomenal and attentive. Our meals were incredible."

  • "I took a friend to the North End for the first time and Strega came through as always! It was "a cappella Tuesday"and we were entertained during dinner by an awesome group of 5 or 6 guys singing us through dinner. Awesome food and great fun! Highly recommend to anyone visiting the North End!"

  • "As two working parents from the burbs we rarely come into Boston but for my husband's birthday we decided to do something different and come to Strega. We'd never been. However, my husband loves their marinara sauce since you can get it in stores around Boston now. We were promptly sat, ahead of time, at our reserved table and the waiter was friendly and personable. We like to be alone but he had a great balance for us. We were have Caprese salad, eggplant and linguini and clams. The Caprese was good but needed a little more basil. The tomatoes were fresh, which makes or breaks this salad, in my opinion. My eggplant was fantastic and my husband devoured his linguini in clams w/ fra diavolo. Great place and will definitely return!"

  • "My first trip to Stega North End did not disappoint. The North End rarely does but I usually avoid the big name places like Strega. From the moment we arrived through our dining experience to our departure we felt as if we were visiting an old friend! Highly reccomend. I give 4 of 5 stars because there is always a little room for improvement."

  • "The menu, food, and service were all excellent. A shortcoming would be that it doesn't serve cocktails. A member of our party really wanted a martini, and we were shocked to find out she couldn't order one. One member of our group was able to order something off menu, which was a bonus. The seafood fra diavolo was incredible, as was the veal osso bucco. The apps, salads, and pastas were excellent as well. The seating was quite cramped, but that is to be expected in such a tiny space. The noise level was quite high."

  • "I had chicken Marsala and my wife had fettuccine. Both meals were poorly cooked. I almost never give a bad review but we both had the same reaction."

  • "A friend and I visited Strega during Restaurant Week because sometimes the North End can be intimidating for those who don't know their way and might have a limited budget. Having a smaller menu and fixed pricing was the perfect way to see if this is somewhere we would like to visit again. Strega is small and intimate, perfect for a date. Our waiter was personable and very attentive. The atmosphere was nice, darkened, but with old italian movies playing up on a 5 TV wall. The food as all great, although the tiramisu wasn't the best we've ever had. Overall a really nice evening and we will probably visit again. Just don't sit by the door, the cold air is an unpleasant suprise."

  • "Had a fantastic evening with my wife and daughter. After visiting Italy last fall we were looking for somewhere with authentic Italian food. This was as close as we've seen domestically. We were immediately seated upon our arrival and the service was second to none thereafter. The pasta, chicken, and veal were outstanding. The restaurant is small and tight but it was just like our experiences in Italy and loved it. Very cozy and friendly. Just about when we were finished an a cappella group showed and sang to the guests. Even though we were finished and the restaurant was full the server invited us to stay and enjoy the singing. Excellent evening!"

  • "Had to ask for restaurant week menu. They weren't too happy about us asking for it. The food was very average."

  • "We had all three special appetizers...prosciutto and creamy fresh mozz, mushroom ravioli (awesome) and the absolute best calamari I have ever had. Great wine selection and a desert plate to share. Grazie Strega!"

  • "Although the food was very good, the four of us in our group felt uncomfortable from the moment we entered. We were not allowed to be seated until the fourth person who was parking the car arrived. In the meantime, because the restaurant is so small, the wait staff kept asking us to move out off their way. With several table for four available, we were seated next to the restrooms..when asked to be moved to another table we were met with unfriendly remarks. Only when we decided to go to,another dining spot were we given another table. Great food, poor service."

  • "I admit the food was decent, but the host sat our party of 4 next to a very smelly bathroom. The waiters circled our table like hawks taking our plates away from us before we finished eating. They really worked hard at pushing us out the door. Any specifics we asked for were not delivered, such as sauce on the side."

  • "We went here with a group of 8 for a friend's bday and had a blast! The food was great and the service was great. Seemed like every table was having a birthday though so we heard "happy birthday" sung probably 6 times."

  • "A very good place, of course parking in the North End is always miserable, but that's not their fault. Our waiter was attentive, good was excellent. Surprised when I got the bill. It was very well priced. This is a great restaurant weekdays and weekend. Great vibe."

  • "FOUR OF US FROM MAINE CAME DOWN FOR A BRUINS GAME THEN A CELTICS GAME LATER THAT EVENING. WE MADE RESERVATIONS AT STREGA AND THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS WONDERFUL. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ESTABLISHMENT IN THE NORTH END. I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND THAT YOU MAKE RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE. HAPPY CUSTOMERS FROM MAINE"

  • "The food was very good and the wait staff were very attentive, but it was very loud and hard to carry on a conversation. We really couldn't hear the specials from the waiter. It is a small place but it did make us feel like we were in Italy. We overhead one little boy make a comment about the movies being shown. They were bloody, but classics!! The God Father, Good Fellas etc."

  • "My husband has dined at Strega's waterfront restaurant and loved it. I love the North End so I thought this restaurant would be a perfect compromise for our anniversary. We arrived 7 minutes late for our reservation (horrible traffic and we did call to tell them) and were made to wait for 25 minutes more. The bartender was so busy talking to patrons seated at the bar she ignored us and when she did acknowledge us she was rather rude. BTW - They do not have a full bar. Just some select cordials and mixed drinks. The dining area is very cramped, small and loud. If you want romance go elsewhere. The wait staff was cordial. The food was "meh" - So many choices in the NE with better food. Glad to experience it - won't be back."

  • "From the host not seating us on time with empty tables available...(oh, did I mention that two guys walked in before us without a reservation and they were seated right away?) My friend asked the waiter about a shrimp dish she saw go by, and he said "sure, I know what it is, no problem". He proceeded to bring a $50.00 cioppino! She has asked for shrimp with pasta! My chicken Marsala was so thick is was like a tough steak. I will say the asparagus were very good. They have no alcohol, only beer and wine. Which I don't drink, so that was a bummer. I also think the TV's take away from the atmosphere. It makes it feel like a sports bar. I would never go here again, and would not recommend it. And have never written one of these reviews before."

  • "I took my Granddaughter here for her 13th birthday. I almost didn't go after reading some of the reviews on Yelp. I don't know what they were talking about. The people there were awesome from the hostess to the busboy. The food was delicious. I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my granddaughter."

  • "We arrived and promptly seated at our table, waitress was very attentive and helpful, great wit and cheerfull all night. The food specials were excellent and plenty of food was served. The only negative note was that everytime the front door was open a very cold draft would chill us at the table, the curtain near door was not used at all !!! Based on food and service provided we will be back with more friends!"

  • "Enjoyed a few glasses of wine and an amazing dinner with my girlfriend. She had veal and I had one of the nightly specials. Steak stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella, both dishes were excellent! Service was outstanding. The server was very attentive. You can tell they are really focused on their customer service. Only thing that was a little tacky was the flat screens playing mob movies. It was easy to ignore them but definitely took away from the ambience of the Italian feel."

  • "Strega was a great surprise. We went for lunch, and immediately upon entering, my husband was drawn to the six tv screens on the wall playing Italian gangster movies: Bronx Tale, Godfather I and II, and his personal favorite, Goodfellas, just to name a few. The wine list was extensive. The best part was the menu. My husband had the parpadelle with mushrooms, which he made me try. It was outstanding! My daughter had the lobster/crabmeat ravioli which she raved about, and I had the buccatini sautéed with pancetta and onions. Delicious. The owner was very hospitable, and visited every table conversing with everyone. We have been to many restaurants in the North End. Some I would revisit and some I wouldn't. I would revisit Strega!"

  • "Cookie cutter, chop-chop experience. Too close with the tables. The two party tables were way to small for the large menus, bread basket, water, drinks oil, candall, etc. Definitely NOT an Italian/ European ambience. Too fast for service but glad to get out of there so quickly. It was awful, at least on st. V's day."

  • "I reserved a table at Strega because I had heard good things about the place. The food was good but didn't blow us away. They have an excellent wine list and an interesting theme. There are monitors on the wall that were showing Robert De Niro movies all mob related. It was loud and became louder at various tables as the wine kicked in. The only complaint would come at the end of the dinner when one of the wait staff swooped in and grabbed my wife's half full glass of wine and disappeared with it. We most likely won't go back not because of the wine glass incident but because there are so many other restaurants in the area to dine at it would be silly to return to the same place unless it was fabulous which Strega was not."

  • "The food was amazing and the waiter was great. It was a great experience up until the last few minutes of my fiancé and I being there. We had just got done paying which I tipped the waiter 20%. She went to the bathroom and I stayed at the table to finish my glass of wine. Then a guy came over that was not my waiter and told me to go to another table a few feet away that was vacant. He proceeded to put my fiances' jacket in my hand and asking me to move. I ended up leaving my half drank of wine which was not cheap on the table. As I was standing up my fiance was walking back from the bathroom. The waiter that helped us all night ended up buying us a drink because he felt bad. This is my first time being here and definitely my last."

  • "I did not have a great experience at this restaurant. The basic green salad was well below average with too much dressing, wilted leaves. The tomatoes were so hard that they were almost impossible to cut. They left my salad plate on the table for the entire meal. The one highlight was the pasta dish. The waiter did not smile or engage in any way until he handed us the check."

  • "This was probably the 20th time maybe more I have eaten here in the past 3 years. We went to celebrate my wife's birthday and they made it more than memorable. Carlo sorry we missed you BUT Johnny did an OUTSTANDING job and made the day MORE than special. My wife felt like a queen and my daughters like princesses. The treatment the respect and the food are the reasons that we will never even think of another place in the north end to eat! This has been for a while and will continue to be "our Italian restaurant". Thank you to Joel, Carlo, Johnny and all the rest of the staff for running a CLASSY place that knows how to treat there regulars well!"

  • "Food was undercooked-could barely cut the veal and asparagus spears! Staff was definitely attentive to removing empty plates and glasses but not for the purpose of good service--they wanted us out as fast as possible!!! I've had a better dining experience in college cafeterias-better food, less noise, and more time to eat!!!!"
