Open Table Diners' Choice Award 2013

Chef Clemente trained in his familial homeland of Benevento (Napoli) Italy in early 2000's where he honed his skills under some of the great chefs of the area. He also spent time training in Spain, Portugal, and Greece where he rounded out his knowledge of the Mediterranean Cuisine.
Anthony was recently auditioned and considered for a role on a Food Network Program currently in pre-production

  • "Outstanding pork saltimboca as a stuffed chop- without a doubt the best Ive ever experienced. The rack of lamb is American lamb which is extremely rare these days and we always enjoy the aromatic and bold broths for all the all the fresh shellfish and seafood they expertly do here. I really don't need any place else. Service is extremely warm and comfortable and knowledgeable- there is no pretension here. "

  • "Food, service and ambience great! Nice place to meet with friends or family. Been there twice. First time the food prep was much better, 10 out of 10 of us loved our food. This time 3 out of 4 really liked it a lot. That said however, I would go again. With many of our friends scattered up the 78 route, it's a good compromise to meeting in the middle."

  • "The food is consistently good. We shared the Strega calamari appetizer as it is way too big for one or even two! Crispy calamari w/ sausage & sweet or hot peppers drizzled with balsamic reduction - sounds strange until to you try it & then you will be hooked! Anytime we have dinner here, this is a staple for the table to share no matter what anyone is getting. Our entrees included short ribs over risotto and my favorite - fiocchi pasta. Little pockets of homemade pasta filled with roasted Pears in a Gorgonzola Cream Sauce - OMG - delicious! Portions are a great size with no room this time for dessert. Service is great - checking in without hovering & being annoying. Since it is not a large restaurant, reservations are a must!"

  • "Even though it is a 4 minute drive from my house I would still drive an hour to get here if I didn't live so close. We went on a Sat. night - the short ribs are to die for and the tiramisu heavenly. But what really caught my attention this time was the creme fraische served with the tiramisu - I'm debating if I can call up and order an order of the creme fraische to go....it's a dessert all on it's own. Still BYOB which makes it more affordable and the food keeps getting better! A must go! Reservations are highly recommended though."

  • "Berkeley Heights has plenty of pasta/red sauce options, but Strega represents a unique and upscale experience for our small town. Strega is in a small storefront, strip mall, but the interior is warm and serene. My wife and I ordered from the specials: scallops served in an exception sauce, lamb and gnocchi w/shrimp, all well prepared and reasonably priced considering the quality. Your dining neighbors will be close but noise levels were modest. It's become popular so reservations are necessary for prime time (it was nearly maxed on a crummy Saturday weather night). A BYOB makes it even more appealing."

  • "My parents were taking me out to dinner for my birthday so I wanted a place with good food,easy access and a BYOB to keep the price down. Strega met all my expectations the food was very good, and there were enough choices to suit all the dinner palates. I was not impressed with the service,our server was a little matter of fact . The only problem with the evening was the noise ."

  • "We had a early reservation, 6 PM, and this small dining room was almost empty. We were a party of 7, so we had four tables together. Service started out OK, but as the evening progressed and the bistro became more crowded, service slowed up and by the time we had desert it was very slow. The food was tasty but the portions were small and prices were big. After we paid our bill, which by the way had an included gratuity of 20%, we were asked to vacate our table for the next patron, who was waiting next door in the attached pizzaria. Very bad form and it left me disappointed in the whole dinning experience. Use your own judgement, but I would not recommend this place and would never eat there again."

  • "But the place is small and the tables are very close together. Think Manhattan. All of our meals were excellent. Beet salad was perfectly dressed. Hangar steak was cooked to order, tender and a good-sized portion. Pastas were delectable. The BYOB policy makes dinner at Strega Bistro a no-brainer. E We will definitly be back. BTW, three parties were turned away because they didn't have reservations."

  • "Our area is over run with "grandma's " Italian restaurants so those with a taste for creative food had little choice. My foodie friend, who insisted we try it, had been there 3 times in her first week of discovery....we are shooting for once a week because it is that good. Appetizers ahi tuna, short rib pasta dish, stray from basic Italian, yet there are "roots" selections on the menu. The biggest problem with Strega is getting a seat at prime dining time. I hate writing this review, in that it will make it even harder to get a table, but this fab eatery deserves to thrive."

The service this last time was better than previous visits. More attentive, faster service, which I'm glad to see because that was my only complaint. Great neighborhood restaurant.   • "Service was attentive but not intrusive. The caesar and arugala salads were wonderfully fresh. The entire table truly enjoyed the calamari, sausage and hot pepper appetizer. My cioppino entree was superb, all the seafood was tender and basking in a delightful tomato brodo. The rest of the table enjoyed entrees of grouper and bronzino. Portions were generous as were the vegetables. All those who had fish entrees felt that the amount of sauce could have been reduced. While both the champagne sauce and truffle sauce were delicious, they were on the rich side, somewhat overpowering the delicate flavor of the fish. We will definitely be back."
