Diner Reviews
  • "My friend and I wanted to grab a bite to eat after work and found the Strand Hotel. We enjoyed our meal and enjoyed the atmosphere at the bar."

  • "Inviting space and excellent food, but disorganized wait-staff. Took a long time to get drinks, bread (had to ask several times), etc. and the restaurant was empty. Asked for pepper and was brought ground pepper, not a mill. Complained about lack of air-conditioning and waitress said it was because front windows were open and she was hot, too. No attempt to apologize or fix the situation!"

  • "There is a new chef and the menu specials are awesome. The service was excellent and the ambience was perfect. We enjoyed it so much, we ate there three more times during our stay!!"

  • "First time here, very long wait to even place order. Waitress (if she was on, may have been hostess filling in), apologized and said short staffed…Overall not a bad experience but can't imagine service if restaurant was busy."

  • "Centrally located, this was a great spot for a reasonable business lunch. The prix fixe on the website is no longer available."

  • "My 3rd times dinning at Strand Bistro, they were good, but not any more, My friend and I sent back all the dishes from appetizer to dessert. they are all too salty on the appetizer and main course, the dessert was bad too. We were so disappointed. I won't go back there again. "

  • "We both ordered Bistro burger. The beef patties didn't taste very fresh. The buns were also not fresh. They should serve better products for the pricing they made. But the service was nice. "

  • "We were staying at a nearby hotel and were somewhat skeptical about eating here, because usually restaurants in hotels are way overpriced. We were very impressed with the menu and prices, plus everything we ordered was delicious and perfectly prepared. I had a made to order omelette and my daughter had the lemon-ricotta pancakes, which were outstanding. Two in our party had the oatmeal, and it was really inspired, with candied nuts on top and strawberries. We plan to return! "

  • "We didn't eat much because we were focused on the business meeting, but the ambiance was cozy and pleasant, and the wait staff was friendly though a little slow. We would return."

  • "It was our anniversary and my job was to find a quiet bar/restaurant with style and good food near Madison Square Garden before attending a concert there at 8. The Strand was the only place that looked promising in online reviews, which left me with trepidation (unfounded as it turned out). We were greeted by a well-stocked bar and stylish (large modern boutique hotel) decoration of the restaurant, which consists of two large rooms. The waiter was excellent - always around, never intrusive, knowledgeable. We had three different cocktails, all chosen after deliberations with the waiter and all with a twist. Our vegetarian food was fancy but not pretentious. The waiter's desert recommendation was spot-on. This picky reviewer was very pleased."

  • "The location and ambience are great but the service was to be desired. Almost felt as if coming at 2 PM for lunch did not work with the waiter schedule. Food was okay. Ceasar salad was skimpy and $7 added 3 shrimp. Also wine by the glass was too expensive - lowest was $12.00 per glass."

  • "The total dining experience was great once again. The décor is always warm and inviting and the food was exceptional. The menu has some wonderful new dishes that we really enjoyed. The horseradish crusted skate was a stand out! The pasta special and apple crumb tart were equally delicious. The service was wonderful as well."

  • "We needed to find a quieter place for breakfast before heading out on the train. The food was very good and they had a section on the menu for healthy smoothies and breakfast entrees. Not a huge menu but the usual bases were covered."

  • "Seeing as this was a restaurant within the Strand hotel the crowd was quite diverse. There were a lot of businessmen in suits but also casual tourists and families. although the front of the restaurant seemed more of a business hang out in front of the bar dining area seemed more intimate yet still casual with the banquet seating, warm lighting, bookcases, and fireplace. The food was great, no complaints there. Not plain Jane but also not too frilly. I enjoyed my dining experience though I wish there were more people on a Friday night."

  • "The food was ok, nothing special. But when it came, there was a very long hair in my husbands main course, which really grossed him out. They took the food back and brought him another serving, but it kind of turned us off from the meal."

  • "Chose this place because it was highly rated for restaurants near The Garden. Very true. Nice room, menu with choice but not too much of it,. My chicken was simple and v ery well cooked - with grits! - and my friends' salmon, burger, steak and pork tenderloin all got thumbs up. Waiter was sweet if a little flaky. We ate on the early side so there was not much of a bar scene, and that is good because there is no separation between bar and dining tables. The mango sorbet was tasteless but the other desserts were very good. We all agreed we would go back again."

  • "Based on OT reviews, took a chance on Strand Bistro and glad I did. Ambiance, service and food all very good!!! Table was waiting, noise level allowed for easy conversation without shouting or straining, service was friendly and attentive, food was tasty and well presented. On a scale of 1-10, I say 8.5"

  • "Last night I had a great dining experience at The Strand Bistro. We were eating out early with our kids and the wait staff and chef were so accommodating. The kale salad and chicken soup were both yummy appetizers. The kids polished off their mac and cheese and left no trace of their burger with sweet potato fries . I would strongly recommend the salmon with quinoa entree, as it was perfectly cooked with a delicious apple glaze. The warm chocolate cake was the perfect ending to our meal. Looking forward to dining their again soon."

  • "Great food, service and convenience. And to top it all off, it's in a hotel? Nice to find another reasonably priced restaurant local to the garment district."

  • "This is the second time I dined at the Strand Bistro and it was fantastic. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. The kale salad with honey-dijon mustard vinaigrette was probably the best kale salad I have had in a long time. The dressing should be bottled it is so good. The two entrees we had were just wonderful. The salmon was nicely cooked with great flavor, loved the mustard seed caviar. The special citrus-crusted tuna was excellent as well. The warm chocolate cake was a perfect ending to the meal. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. We really enjoyed the live music."

  • "On my second visit to this restaurant for lunch, We enjoyed even a greater time than the first! The ambience is warming on a cold day and the service was outstanding! The staff all made it their business to be there for anything we needed -- without any hovering. The food was all delicious as well -- and great wine choices! Delighted and looking forward to my next lunch at The Strand Bistro!"

  • "In fairness, we ate here the Monday before the Super Bowl so there is a chance this wasn't a typical night - however there weren't many people there so I assume it was. Food was average, looked better than it was but really no complaints, it was fine. The service was comically slow - sat down a little before 6 and the time on the check was almost 7:45 when it finally came. Bottom line, I had higher hopes."

  • "I took a group fro lunch and it was perfect. The prix Fixe was actually a great deal. A burger and kale salad was a pretty good deal. I had fun. The noise level was not high and not low, perfect for groups and colleagues. The only short coming was that the prix Fixe menu was very short...but then again, its prix fixe."

  • "I just moved to New York and our friends were here for New Year Eve and raved about the food so we thought we would give it a try. They were right, The Strand Bistro food was absolutely excellent! Thumbs up on both their steak and fish. The food was delicious and perfectly done with great flavor. Service was good not great. Definitely will be back."

  • "We booked this place for our NYE dinner after visiting their website and reading (unbalanced) reviews. The place is a very regular place with no great difference from any other hotel place. The service is very poor and nothing really special (they even gave us an incorrect bill). The food? I have never seen such poor combinations of tastes and overall low quality meat and fish selection given the prices they charged. The steak was so hard to cut that it was almost impossible to eat (I heard very similar comments from our table neighbors). Absolutely not recommended for any special occasion and would only go for a very regular lunch. Terrible value for money overall, probably the worst thing I Have spent my money on in my entire foodie life."

  • "Fantastic bar and ambiance. Not a huge menu but everything was very tasty. We had three adults and three kids in our dinner group. The waitstaff was very accommodating and friendly. All of our dishes were delicious. It was late, so the chef insisted we try three of the desserts with his compliments. Very good!!!"

  • "The Organic Chicken and the Glazed Atlantic Salmon were really goodamazing and really tasty. The service was nice and helpful. Unfortunately, the second course was served to us whereas we had not finish our first course yet. This is the only bad thing about our dinner at the Strand Bistro. It was not too expensive. We really enjoyed our dinning here and it will be a pleasure to come here again."

  • "Me and a friend both had a two-course dinner, and sadly the only great thing about this place was the food itself. The restaurant/bar is not impressionable as shown on photos you'll find online. It was a regular hotel bar and restaurant seatings inside, located in the lobby with not much else to it. Abstract arts hung all around a small space (and that is pretty much the deco). Our server was friendly and helpful, but nothing special. The lady who showed us the table was not so friendly or helpful, which ruined the first impression of the restaurant. Overall I was disappointed, great for a regular dinner - NOT for special occasions."

  • "I had dined at the Strand Bistro last year but this time the food was exceptional. The menu is different and the food is dynamite. The tuna tartare appetizer looked like a piece of art work when it came to the table and it tasted even better than it looked. The slaw dog sliders were also delicious. The main courses did not disappoint. The pork tenderloin and the hanger steak were both cooked to perfection. The restaurant is warm and cozy. Overall a great meal. Will definitely not wait a year to come back."

  • "I used to really enjoy their prix fixe lunch, but now the price has gone up and the choices have become fewer. Service is quite poor, wait times for salads and starters to come out are long, sandwiches are fine, but nothing special for the new $23 price. Wait staff had to be asked repeatedly for small things like ketchup and then we were charged for additional soft drinks, even though that has never been the policy in the past. (The charges were removed when I refused to pay them.) In short, I used to find this was a good go-to please for a client lunch or for something nicer than a Korean salad bar, but now it's just overpriced and not worth the cost. Too bad!"

  • "We had eaten here a year prior and enjoyed it so brought friends when in town again this year. Once again the ambience and food were excellent but the service was disappointing. The waiter seemed well intentioned but was inept. He was initially rushing us (perhaps he thought he was being attentive, but we were obviously talking and not looking at the menus). One in our group had ordered a salad, but it actually came after his entree so was sent back. The waiter then offered dessert menus from which we ordered but it took a long time for it to come and then even longer for us to get the check. The waiter needs to learn to better read the customer and situation and go with their flow."

  • "Food was good but our waiter was almost non-existent. Waited for 30 minutes for a glass of water but waiter did not come, so I took a pitcher of water from a nearby table and pour some myself. Our desserts came but were not given any spoons or forks, we have to ask twice to get them. We waited for almost 45 minutes before they clear off our dessert plates. We have to ask three times for our bill. The bill comes up finally and it pains me to see that we should pay minimum USD 38 for tip. At the end we left $ 25 only but find it still a bit high for the sort of service we were provided!"

  • "Left nothing to be thankful for on Thanksgiving. Prefix was more than the most expensive ala carte options - that should have told me something about the thoughtfulness. Salad course was fine - nothing spectacular. The main event on Thanksgiving, turkey, was inedible. Yes, inedible! Remember the scene in Christmas Vacation where the turkey exploded into turkey jerky? Oh and where was the seasoning on the remainder? And who uses gravy as a plate decoration? The pork was ordered, and it was good just a bit under-seasoned. The desert was plated at least 12 hours prior. Toasted marshmallow was dried fluff cement. And that cheesecake is not worthy enough to be served in NYC. They tried to overcharge on top of this! Sadly Unfortunate."
