A word from Straits Restaurant - San Francisco
Singapore for almost 200 years has been at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, where many cultures and nationalities live, work and more importantly, eat together. Singapore's cuisines logically reflect this cultural diversity. The four major culinary cultures -- Malaysian/Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and Nonya -- are in fact a blend of each other, creating a new cuisine that is unique and more complex in flavors and fragrances. Straits Restaurant offers a menu that features the complexity of all these Singaporean cuisines in chef Chris Yeo's unique interpretation.Continued
Diner Reviews
  • "I came to this resturant a year ago, and the food and ambience was great. I took my girlfriends there last week, dragged them from the south bay promising them it was worth the drive. It was a complete bust !! They had run out of the main fish dish I went there for by 8pm ??!! The food came out at different times, was cold and the quality had definately gone down. The server didn't seem to know what he was doing either, we had to ask for our drinks over and over, ask to him to remove our used plates. I honestly felt embrassed !!"

  • "Great for a pre-movie dinner. Good service and food. Nice vegetarian options."

  • "We were very happy with the food and the location was convenient for our evening plans. Music louder than we would have liked, but only strong negative was the very rude reservations agent. We made the reservation through Open Table. On the day of the dinner, we received a call from the restaurant announcing that we had to be there at exactly 5:45pm, and that all four of our party had to be present at that time, in order not to lose the table. My husband acknowledged this, whereupon the woman said "Do you understand that?" Offended, he replied: "Yes, English is my first language.""

  • "Food was great! Too noisy for our liking. Ambience is more in tune for a younger crowd. Dark."

  • "Came here for dinner when it first opened. It was amazing. The ginger chicken, rice, roti, soup, salads, drinks. Service was friendly and prompt. This time I went with a coworker for my birthday. Service was slow, I was the first one there, no one said anything to me for 10 minutes until the rest of the party arrived. Then, it took another 10 minutes for them to get our order and food was not as yummy as the last time. The servers didn’t even provide their names. I’d go again, but I would tell people to not expect much."

  • "We were so happy to find a "happy hour" at Straits before the MetLive movie on Wednesday. We enjoyed sitting at the "Big Table", enjoyed the $5 appetizers (we ordered 6 plates for 4 people) and the reduced price beer and wines. Would definitely repeat in the future!"

  • "Roti and accompanying curry sauce was very good. Stir fried beef was excellent. Cioppino was good. A very good venue for an after work drink and either a professional or personal engagement afterwards; one of those restaurant/bars which merge these worlds well."

  • "We went on a Sunday late afternoon. The service was friendly. There were hardly any people, may be because it was a Sunday, may be because it was late, may be because people don't know Singaporean food. We enjoyed our meal of roti parata, chicken wings, Nasi goreng, mee goreng, sambas prawns and Singaporean style chicken curry. They were all good, but didn't quite hit the spot for the dishes we were craving since our last visit to Singapore. We were a little disappointed as we were comparing."

  • "The food was not great by standards of SF. The menu read well but the execution was mediocre. The service, however, was HORRIBLE. It was over 20 minutes before we were even asked if we wanted a drink and a full hour before we hand the chance to order a second drink. We were watching time since we had movie tickets so these times are accurate. Seriously the waiter was a no-show and it ruined the experience. It wasn't even crowded. The ambiance is the only real selling point (it's really nice) and the bar is fine. If you aren't in for dinner and just want to have a drink at the bar this place is great."

  • "We have been going to Straits before movies for a few years. This last visit will be our last. The food has become more and more bland over the past couple of years and now it's just boring and not worth it. I sat to watch the open kitchen for a short while and the cooks were joking, talking with the wait staff and not focused on the food. Two glasses of wine, one appetizer, one salad and a couple of curries and we dropped $75 plus tip. Too bad, because it should be better than this."

  • "I've been eating frequently at Straits Café when it was a small neighborhood restaurant on Geary Blvd. and continue enjoying it after it moved into such a great location as Westfield Mall! Not only the food is good here - it is consistently good! Origami Seabass is one of my favorites as well as Roti Prata, Rendang or Tamarind Beef, Seafood Green Curry, etc. - pretty much anything here is delicious. Don't forget to order Fresh Mango Pudding - one of the tastiest deserts you can get in San Francisco!"

  • "We arrived on Sunday night - maybe it was because of the Oscars, the restaurant was not busy at all. Ordered the roti, satay (chicken n beef), hainanese chicken & mee goreng. The roti was pretty good; satay - the chicken was better than the beef coz the need was too dry. Hainanese chicken - the portion was good and tasted okay; the mee goreng was too tomato-y and very small portion - not worth ordering again."

  • "Very good place to meet, convenient to public transportation, lively ambiance. Food was delicious with options for GF as well as vegetarian and "meat" eaters. Very accommodating hostess who seated five of us where we could have a conversation without shouting! Would recommend it as a place to meet friends."

  • "The food was ok. I really like the Roti but the pork belly dish was a bit greasy and the satay chicken was a bit dry and it could use a better sauce."

  • "The food is still amazing. The menu changed a bit from our last visit. Some of the items we wanted had been substituted, which was a bit of a disappointment. The lollipop chicken was replaced with chicken wings, which were not as good. I recommend the garlic noodles and seafood risotto. Our server was great."

  • "second time there and was not disappointed. it was a little late for dinner so the restaurant was quiet which was nice. the food and service were both great. would definitely recommend straits and will be visiting there again."

  • "Entertained a client here. Interesting cocktails, reasonably-priced wines, and unique cuisine (Singaporean). We ordered "family style" so everyone got to taste. Whole fish, pad thai, curry..everything was good. Straits is part of my "usual" rotation in San Francisco--never been disappointed."

  • "This place is amazing. Customer service is the best I've ever seen in a long time. Made reservations for my 2 year anniversary. The minute you walk up your greeted by friendly hostess and instantly seated. Within 5 minutes our server came named Justin and he was excellent. Took our orders and about 6 minutes later food was got fresh on the table. A ordered the spring rolls and crispy calamari for appetizers and chicken and shrimp garlic noodles. For the main course we had the cracked pepper crab which W2s enough for two people. All in all this is my new favorite place. If you're looking for great service and food not to mention good prices go to Straits."

  • "Except the roti paratha, everything else was not great, plus it was almost $30 per person with tip. Would I ever come here again? No. Staff here is nice and they take care of the guests well. But, the food needs lots of improvement."

  • "My friends and I stopped by this restaurant and they told us the wait would be close to two hours. We were frustrated, but understood. Then, we walked away and checked the Open Table app to see if there was availability and they had room in 45 minutes. We hung out a bit longer and then went to the restaurant. There's something a bit untoward about that, but I can't put my finger on it. We had a perfectly fine experience at the restaurant, nothing to write home about but definitely the best mall-based restaurant I have ever eaten in. Just a very frustrating way to start."

  • "Can you imagine being told by one's server that they are out of shrimp, ahi tuna and beef. We were the first diners at lunch on Dec. 30. Mind you, at least 3 of their appetizers and 5 entrees main ingredients are the aforementioned items. How disappointing!!! We chose Straits because we had a good experience and enjoyed the food before. I ordered the mussels which was fair although the black bean sauce appeared as a sticky blob at the bottom of the bowl. The chow fun with Chinese sausage and "old" shrimp was another "sticky" dish which was lukewarm. The best item was my friend's pommes frites. Now, that's sad. The best item being the fries in a Asian (Malaysian) restaurant."

  • "Probably the most tender masala chicken curry ever. curry quantity felt smaller, but 2 curries and padthai with extra rice was sufficient for a family of 4. Great experience overall.."

  • "This place has gone downhill. No one seems to be paying attention to the quality of the food. I have been going to Straits since is was out of Geary in the Richmond district. Once it moved to the Westfield Center it started to slip. Had lunch there on Monday and it was terrible. Spareribs totally overcooked and dry and the chicken wrap was so awful I send it back. Have to say the Murtback was great as aways but they have taken that off the lunch menu and I had to ask for it. Will not be going back. Straits need to clean up its act."

  • "Located conveniently on the 4th floor of the San Francisco Shopping Center opposite side to Bloomingdale's. Good mix of Sigaporean, Malaysian, Thai! and a few Viet dishes. Ginger soda is my favorite is grape leaf rolled beef, and root prata."

  • "Had not been to this Strait's location in awhile. The food was all delicious - quite a variety of flavors! Met up with friends before the holidays and had a great experience - they sat us where we requested so we could catch up, and the bottomless mimosas on the weekend was a nice surprise. A bargain for SF. Love the food here. Very convenient for holiday shopping, too. Recommend the roti prata and wok fired mussels as appetizers."

  • "had hoped for a better experience -- the food was GREASY. As Yelp reviewers suggested we had the roti, spicy basil chicken, and garlic noodles. found the portions to be on the small side, and the price point to be expensive. nothing special. if we hadn't be seated over to the side, the noise level would have been been extreme. good for fun-loving parties who don't really care about great food."

  • "Easy to book through Open Table this great restaurant at the Westfield Mall for a catch up visit with a friend. Food, service and environment lovely. Disliked that 2 hours before I was called and asked to reconfirm the reservation which I did but resent. Waste of my time but voice mail I received made me think my reservation would not be held without a call back."

  • "I was meeting up with a past boss that I haven't seen in two years, he had a dinner meeting later, so small plates were perfect to nibble and catch up. It would have been the perfect plan, but we spent more time waiting for food than eating it. Here's an example: I asked for a cup of hot tea; I was brought a cup of hot water with a promise to return with the tea bag promptly. It took so long for the tea bag to come that my water was cold and the tea would not steep! Once we complained to the manager, she took over our table and our experience was fantastic from that point on. It was really great to see they were that interested in making sure our experience was great. I'll definitely be back!"

  • "We arrived at 6 p.m. at our reservation time and were seated right away. After 10 minutes, our server came over to take our order. We ordered drinks and four small plates to share. Our first plate arrived in another 10 minutes; the next three plates in another 10 minutes, our drinks came in another 15 minutes after plenty of reminders from us. One came in a broken glass, but we couldn't return it right away as our server didn't come back to check on us. All in all, very disappointing."
