Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful food with a great ambiance. Always feels like special occasion."

  • "This restaurant is a real neighborhood gem!! I love this restaurant"

  • "My husband and I read a rave review of this Kansas City restaurant in Food and Wine magazine. We were not disappointed! The food--from appetizers to dessert--was delicious and artfully presented. The Australian Shiraz was amazing! Our server was helpful but at the same time sensed our need for a leisurely evening with friends. I would recommend Story to anyone who is planning a special night out!"

  • "This is PV's best restaurant hands down. It is also one of KC's best. The menu has plenty of well-made dishes that aren't too weird or risqué. Don't get me wrong, there are some unique entrées and appetizers (sweetbreads), but there's something for everyone, adventurer and conservative alike. Execution is top notch as is presentation."

  • "We always look forward to Story. Love the chef, the hostess (his wife often) and the welcoming atmosphere and most of all the food and the service."

  • "Very sophisticated environment. The interior would not be out of place in midtown Manhattan."

  • "We enjoyed another wonderful evening here. The restaurant was delightfully cool on a hot summer evening and our server, Matt, is not only very competent and took great care of us, but his knowledge of the individual wines on the wine list has been helpful many times in choosing a wine to go with our meal. Unfortunately some inconsiderately loud patrons nearby interfered with our trying to have a quiet conversation at our table."

  • "Chef Thorne-Thompson continues to add new, terrific items to his menu while leaving the "favorites" on as well."
    Dined on 8/3/2014
  • "Everything was very, very good, as always. The standouts for us this time were the crab and tomato salad and the chocolate torte with the toasted meringue. The crab was delicious and generous and, of course, it's the time for tomatoes and these were perfect. The chocolate torte was amazingly silky and full of deep chocolate flavor. We'd not seen toasted meringue, but it's a great idea. Melts on contact in your mouth."

  • "First time there and loved it. Everything was prepared very well and the flavor combinations were great. Of particular note was the ceviche appetizer, incredible!"

  • "Wife and I sat outside on a great midweek evening. Service was impeccable being attentive, but not 'in your face'. Wine steward was knowledgable, and helpful in wine selection. The food though stole the show. We shared multiple appetizers from foie gros, sweetbreads, to steak tartar. Dessert of house-made mini doughnuts served with a sauterne was a great way to end a fabulous meal. Every course was excellently prepared, and served with thought in presentation. I'll be happy to return!"

  • "The food is the main draw, but the friendly service and cool modern design leave an impression. Try the ceviche, octopus, duck empanadas, and linguini. It's food that tastes as good as good as it looks."
    Dined on 7/26/2014
  • "Seats were too close and room was too noisy to talk to my date. Food was good but not that special. Service was a little slow but the server was very informative and did a.great.job! Portion size was small for dinner items and pricing seemed way too high for the menu selections especially here in KC. I was expecting more with elevated reviews."

  • "We were in town for the weekend and on the recommendation of friends who have been to Story dozens of times, we were eager to enjoy dinner there. Nothing disappointed, and some selections were outstanding. Jamie, our server, couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. The main room was full, so a little louder than we like, but not to the point of annoyance. It seemed that most portions were on the small side, but you can still enjoy all the flavors and textures to their fullest. I doubt that anyone has ever taken any of their meal home."

  • "Food and service was great! Hard to have a conversation with our table mates. Room was very loud."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "Our group of 5 had all been referred to Story. Half of us had the braised ribs, other half, the Halibut. We all agree the food was amazing! For me, the Halibut was the best I have ever had. The empanadas appetizer was awesome too. We all will return."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "A must visit restuarants every time we visit KC! We have tried over half the dishes on the menu and each is excellent. The bread served with the salad is some of the best bread I have ever tasted."
    Dined on 7/25/2014
  • "We picked Story to celebrate 3 big events: our 50th wedding anniversary, our friends' 25th wedding anniversary, and our daughter starting a new job. Story did an outstanding job serving the 6 of us in a perfect manner. Story continues to impress us by maintaining a CONSISTENT and HIGH level of food quality, food creativity, service and ambience. We have recently returned from eating in some of the better restaurants in Paris, and Story competes very favorably with those. Carl and Susan Thompsen have created a world class gem in the center of the US."

  • " very enjoyable meal, all 4 meals were very good. would go back"

  • "This was our second time dining at Story, the first being about a year ago. We went to celebrate someone's birthday and just lightly referenced her birthday when deciding at the hostess table whether to sit outdoors or inside. We sat outside, had a wonderful dinner with a fantastic server. The pork tenderloin was the most tender piece of pork I have ever enjoyed! We ordered the german chocolate cake for dessert and they brought it with Happy Birthday written on the plate with chocolate syrup & a candle. It was a welcome surprise and the cake is the most amazing german chocolate cake you'll ever encounter. My only "gripe" is that they charged $1.00 for blue cheese stuffed olives in my martini…really?"

  • "I love braised short rib and this was one of the best ever. Beet appetizer was also outstanding. Carrot cake dessert was very disappointing, lacking in flavor and very overpriced for what was received. Wine list also seemed a little overpriced but likely priced for the neighborhood. Service was very good but just a tad overwhelmed at times. Overall a very good meal and glad to go. Given the price point, I'm not sure I would return knowing what else is out there at that price."

  • "My second time here, second brunch, second quiche. The texture is beautiful. However, though I complained about my first salty quiche, it's still too salty. My companion, who order same, concurred. I intend to go a third time, order the quiche and endure the salt if I must. But it would be lovely with just a bit less salt. Lovely Bellinis and excellent service, but for me, the ambience keeps me coming back. It's a lovely room."

  • "We had reservations for Story to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary. Story never disappoints. Great food, fun items sent from the chef. The wait service was ok, not outstanding. My champagne came about 15 min after my husband's G and T. Wait staff said it was a busy time at the bar….. Well that's weird. Nights are always busy at a bar. We had to ask our waiter about the drink to get the drink. So I would still go there again, great place, beautiful setting, but would hope for someone different. He was not attentive and typically the wait staff at Story are excellent. Perhaps he was distracted and we caught him on a bad night. Just FYI went to Story once on a Monday. They were closed. So heads up on that."

  • "Best meal we've had in ages. Carl Thorne-Thomsen is an artist. Every offering was amazing."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "We made our way through the appetizer menu, sharing plates in order to experience as much as we could. We tried the arugula salad, the beet salad and the softshell crab before their season is over. All ingredients were fresh and delicious. Then, we moved on to the mussels, (which chef kindly takes out of the shell for his customers -- very nice touch). With the mussels and fava beans we enjoyed the lobster and chanterelle linguine and the wild mushroom risotto. All of our dishes were extremely good, but the risotto dish is outstanding. We ended our meal with a tres leches cake with fresh blueberries and an ancho chile caramel. Moist, moist, moist and fabulous. The service and food were top notch! We'll definitely be back soon."

  • "Went for Sunday Brunch for our first visit. Was very impressed with the ambience and the knowledge and helpfulness of the waitress. The food was outstanding. Can't wait until our next visit which will be for dinner."

  • "outstanding food, good service, the wait between courses was long but worth the wait."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Absolutely the finest food we've had in the KC area for quite some time. The duck empanada and Maryland crab appetizer and halibut main course were outstanding. Our server, Melissa, very knowledgeable about the food and wine list. Looking forward to returning for Sunday brunch."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "wonderful meal with inventive take on first course choices such as mussels conveniently out of their shells and a spectacular risotto with poached egg on top. fine entrees and the delicious bread as usual."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "Story never disappoints! I had the soft shell crab, which was delicious and cooked to perfection! My husband had the Sunday Night Special and declared it tasty as well."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "This low key venue makes a strong impression when it comes to the food. Although the menu is not huge, there were so many desirable choices. And what ends upon your plate is exceptional. For example, their seasonal, flash friend soft shell crab was the best I have ever had. Salads had subtle, fresh flavors and their fish entrees were noteworthy. As we watched a server get drenched while he carried the umbrella for a customer who used a walker to return to his car after dinner in a raging downpour, it became clear that Story is committed to its customers in every respect."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "No point in leaving reviews for Story. If you're a regular and leave constructive feedback with your name, nobody calls or apologizes. Portions get smaller and now no bread."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The food is good but not wonderful. Portions are small and food is overpriced. Seated at rear of restaurant where there is no atmosphere."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Too expensive based on the portion sizes.. Quality of food is very good and service was great.. The portion size based is too small based on the price!!"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Every bite of our food was delicious. Their menu is very broad with excellent selections. The wine list had many good choices with wide variety of price points. The soft-shell crab was perhaps the best I've ever eaten. The green salad was perfect. The salmon was very good but perhaps a little on the side of dry. The German Chocolate cake was outstanding. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "This was our first time at "Story" and it will not be our last. The menu is very creative and everything we ordered was outstanding. Highly recommend."

  • "We took our kids (ages 11, 9, & 7) with us for Father's Day dinner. We requested to sit on the patio, & things went very well. The kids were reasonably behaved & loved the items they had from the kids menu (salmon, bacon grilled cheese, & sloppy joe!). My only kids' complaint was that the $7.50 meal didn't include a drink. My son had a Sprite which cost $3.50. My husband & I had the Sunday night special, which was a pork chop w/spatzle. It was so nice that Story still had the Sunday $10 special since that kept it reasonably priced for us & allowed our budget a few glasses of wine. Delicious!"
