Story is a contemporary American restaurant in The Village Shopping Center in Prairie Village, KS. The Center is located 10 minutes southwest of Kansas City, Missouri's Country Club Plaza.
Story offers local, seasonal creative American cuisine from Chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen. Chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen is a 2013 James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest and FOOD & WINE magazine's The People's Best New Chef: Midwest.
Story features comfortable dining room, patio and bar seating. Brunch is served on Sunday 10 am - 2 pm. Dinner is served Tuesday - Sunday 5pm - 10pm.

  • "This is a beautifully appointed small neighborhood restaurant with an award-winning chef who always delivers. Our reserved table for seven, including one child, was ready and waiting when we arrived a little early for Easter Brunch. We were seated immediately and handled with impeccable service throughout the meal. The menu is small, but with some unusual items. Try the house made donuts! Prices are not what I would call inexpensive, but reasonable for the quality of the food and service. I highly recommend Story for a special occasion, or to make an any day meal special. "

  • "This was not our first visit to Story. Each time we have been impressed from the time we entered the restaurant. We had started our Sunday morning very early so were ready for a special meal at a leisurely pace at 12:45. Story did not disappoint. The new menu allows for large or small appetites and new taste experiences. This time we had ricotta fritters,light and just sweet enough; white asparagus soup, creamy and delicately flavored; and shrimp with grits, not too heavy and just different enough. Our cocktails were inventive and light, perfect for brunch. The service from the time we entered was friendly, helpful, never intrusive. The decor provides a sophisticated yet comfortable background for dining."

  • "Waited a very long time for main course and then it was served cold. Server apologized and said the restaurant had just opened patio which added 40 seats and they were down a line cook so the kitchen was way behind. Cold food was replaced quickly after complaining. Once served, the food was delicious. I expect better from this restaurant."

  • "Our party of four tried an array of different appetizers, salads and entrees and generally enjoyed most dishes. The highlight was a linquine & lobster appetizer. The pasta was delicate and delicious. Entrees, including swordfish, halibut and the pork belly were all very good. We all enjoyed the scant sprinkling of spring vegetables, peas, fava beans, snow peas, etc. accompanying our dishes, and our biggest complaint about the meal is that we all wanted much larger vegetable servings, the veggies were a highlight and comprised literally, just a sprinkling; I never understand why restaurants are so stingy with vegetables. For dessert, the doughnuts were a hit, the carrot cake a big miss. Restaurants just can't seem to do cake well. "

  • "I get that having an award-winning chef is a big deal. The food was amazing and the restaurant was full. However, the portions were small and overpriced. Wine by the glass and sides also overpriced and small. Took my mother for her birthday along with young adult sons. The waiter knew it was her BD but because none of us ordered dessert, he said they would not bring out her complimentary dessert and simply wished her a happy birthday. "

  • "Met friends for dinner from out of town. Had excellent, service and all meals were unique, beautifully presented and a taste delight from a top chef at Story! We were not rushed and the wait staff was very sensitive to our need to visit as a foursome so graciously allowed this to happen while still being comfortably attentive to us! I look forward to returning as do our out of town guests!"

They had a wonderful menu, the service was impeccable, nice atmosphere and pleasantly accommodated each of our three late seating changes (due to weather) .   • "Story has been one of our favorites since it opened. We used to love Chef Carl's cooking when he was Sous Chef at Michael Smith. We brought Mom and Dad for their wedding anniversary for brunch. We really think it's one of the best times to dine. It's enough out of the way that it doesn't get really crowded with long waits like some of the more popular breakfast spots. I always love the duck empanadas, and my wife loved her seafood risotto."

  • "Restaurant was super loud, so ruined the ambiance...felt like we were in a cafeteria. Service was slow, there was only 2 of us, and dinner took over 2 hrs. My artic char was really good, but small for the price. My husband ordered a medium rare steak that came out medium well. But the duck empenadas were fantastic, and for dessert, we had the donuts and lemon bars, both very good. There are many other places we'd choose before going back to Story (Cafe Provence, Novel), but glad we gave it a try."

  • "As season ticket holders at the Symphony we are always trying to find a restaurant to dine after the Sunday afternoon performance. I had seen where chef had won the Food and Wine award and was nominated again this year. I checked out the website and we gave it a try. First of all the design of the restaurant is superb, excellent use of space, interesting angles and curves, very appealing. Our waiter, whose name I have forgotten, was helpful, did not rush any decisions and still attentive. I won't go into the details of our selections but we were impressed with each item and only wished we could have tried more. It will have to be on our next visit. It is obvious that the focus is all about the food. Keep it that way."

  • "My husband and I don't get a lot of chances to go out, especially on a Saturday night. He is a sous-chef at a nice restaurant as well and we have two kids under the age of two. When we get a night free we can be very exacting and have high standards on where we would like to spend our very limited time. Story met all of our expectations and more. The food was amazing and true to season, the service was attentive and friendly without being stuffy or pushy. They walked the line between a gourmet, delicate experience and being overly pretentious with ease. The restaurant is small and intimate but without feeling over stuffed just to fit that one more table in. The decor is minimal, but in the best of ways."

  • "My daugher, who is quite a foodie, brought me to Story for a birthday brunch back in January. I immediately became a fan. I brought my husband in February for Valentine's Day, and he loved it as well. I brought a business friend in March, and we took advantage of the special food menu prices in the bar, she loved it and plans to bring her husband next. On this newest visit, I brought a friend for a girl's night out dinner, and we both had wonderful food and good service. I have now tried every type of dining here except the Sunday night special, so that is now on my list to try. I have never been disappointed!"

  • "A neighbor mentioned the happy hour special on the fried chicken plate. Only $5 for the best fried chicken ever. Now we go whenever, regardless whether it is happy hour or not, because we've never had a better fried chicken anywhere else. We've tried many other options from their menus, and never been disappointed. The chef takes great care in his dishes. Creating the most amazing flavors. The service is always perfect!"

  • "We have dined at Story countless times (lunches and dinners) and never once have been disappointed in any aspect of the restaurant. This past Sunday we enjoyed the flank steak entrée which was featured as the Sunday Entrée Special. The smoked duck appetizer was especially delicious with a crispy crust - a nice blend of textures and flavors. Matt, again, gave us impeccable service and the ambience was comfortable and rather low-key, considering the restaurant was fully occupied. This is, without a doubt, our favorite restaurant."

But now, NOW, it is just off the charts AMAZING & INCREDIBLE! And, he just continues to get better! The level of flavor & finesse Chef Carl puts into all of his food is just hard to describe, but the minute you take that first bite, you know something very special, and totally ethereal, is going on in that kitchen. Absolutely nothing disappoints! And so it was with this Valentines Tasting Menu; perfection to the point of talking about it for days, even comparing it to "certain chefs" in Napa Valley, saying, “Finally, there’s no need to go to California to find truly great food – it is here!”"
