This time we headed there for a quick dinner before going to a party later in the evening. I was hoping to get in while the soft shell crab was still on the menu and we were in luck. Cooked perfectly without too much seasoning and a nice sauce...it was wonderful. And, since we we had plans for the evening, our server was super quick (and very friendly) and we were in and out in about 45 minutes. I didn't know it was possible to batter and deep fry poached eggs and have them still be soft and gooey! Both gentlemen loved their food but I think my friend was disappointed in her selection of entree although she loved her first course. I was dieting and the server and chef made a nice effort to serve my fish and salad with very little fat. The fish was still delicious and moist. I'm looking forward to eating there another time when I can fully enjoy the menu. The couple who were having the anniversary were delighted with the presentation of their dessert with Happy Anniversary written on the plate, but didn't care for the doughnuts. The only criticism I have had in more than 2 years of dining at Story is they can have a tendency to overcook fish just slightly. Drinks were unique and tasted fantastic. Both the tuna tartare and the steak tartare are to die for. I had the lamp entree which tasted amazing and my partner had the steak. The steak was well overcooked but the issue was eventually corrected. After moving to KC from Napa Valley, we've struggled to find a restaurant here that consistently lives up to our expectations regarding quality of food, and has a wine list with choices other than the "usual suspects". Story is by far the best place in KC we've tried so far (and we've tried a lot including the big names). I'd mention what specific dishes I'd recommend, but everything we got (7 dishes to share) was incredible so I don't think you can go wrong. The food is inventive, flavorful, and executed perfectly. Both times our servers were awesome.
