Diner Reviews
  • "Went for Sunday Brunch for our first visit. Was very impressed with the ambience and the knowledge and helpfulness of the waitress. The food was outstanding. Can't wait until our next visit which will be for dinner."

  • "We made our way through the appetizer menu, sharing plates in order to experience as much as we could. We tried the arugula salad, the beet salad and the softshell crab before their season is over. All ingredients were fresh and delicious. Then, we moved on to the mussels, (which chef kindly takes out of the shell for his customers -- very nice touch). With the mussels and fava beans we enjoyed the lobster and chanterelle linguine and the wild mushroom risotto. All of our dishes were extremely good, but the risotto dish is outstanding. We ended our meal with a tres leches cake with fresh blueberries and an ancho chile caramel. Moist, moist, moist and fabulous. The service and food were top notch! We'll definitely be back soon."

  • "Best meal we've had in ages. Carl Thorne-Thomsen is an artist. Every offering was amazing."

  • "outstanding food, good service, the wait between courses was long but worth the wait."

  • "Our dining experience at Story is always wonderful -- Great people and fabulous food!"

  • "Absolutely the finest food we've had in the KC area for quite some time. The duck empanada and Maryland crab appetizer and halibut main course were outstanding. Our server, Melissa, very knowledgeable about the food and wine list. Looking forward to returning for Sunday brunch."

  • "wonderful meal with inventive take on first course choices such as mussels conveniently out of their shells and a spectacular risotto with poached egg on top. fine entrees and the delicious bread as usual."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "Story never disappoints! I had the soft shell crab, which was delicious and cooked to perfection! My husband had the Sunday Night Special and declared it tasty as well."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "This low key venue makes a strong impression when it comes to the food. Although the menu is not huge, there were so many desirable choices. And what ends upon your plate is exceptional. For example, their seasonal, flash friend soft shell crab was the best I have ever had. Salads had subtle, fresh flavors and their fish entrees were noteworthy. As we watched a server get drenched while he carried the umbrella for a customer who used a walker to return to his car after dinner in a raging downpour, it became clear that Story is committed to its customers in every respect."

  • "No point in leaving reviews for Story. If you're a regular and leave constructive feedback with your name, nobody calls or apologizes. Portions get smaller and now no bread."

  • "We took our kids (ages 11, 9, & 7) with us for Father's Day dinner. We requested to sit on the patio, & things went very well. The kids were reasonably behaved & loved the items they had from the kids menu (salmon, bacon grilled cheese, & sloppy joe!). My only kids' complaint was that the $7.50 meal didn't include a drink. My son had a Sprite which cost $3.50. My husband & I had the Sunday night special, which was a pork chop w/spatzle. It was so nice that Story still had the Sunday $10 special since that kept it reasonably priced for us & allowed our budget a few glasses of wine. Delicious!"

  • "The food is good but not wonderful. Portions are small and food is overpriced. Seated at rear of restaurant where there is no atmosphere."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Too expensive based on the portion sizes.. Quality of food is very good and service was great.. The portion size based is too small based on the price!!"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Every bite of our food was delicious. Their menu is very broad with excellent selections. The wine list had many good choices with wide variety of price points. The soft-shell crab was perhaps the best I've ever eaten. The green salad was perfect. The salmon was very good but perhaps a little on the side of dry. The German Chocolate cake was outstanding. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "We took my husband and Dad to Story for Father's Day brunch. Everyone loved their meal! We have been there in the past and their food is consistently amazing! It's a place where the kids can eat delicious food and we feel as if we had a night out with with a gourmet meal and an a refreshing beverage. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Excellent food and a delightful patio in a small, upscale-ish shopping center which provides lots of free parking and a pleasant before/after dinner walk. There's even a small movie theater next door. The wine and beer lists were excellent, and the menu was delightfully small with a variety of choices; something for every palate. We had the excellent duck empanadas for appetizer and I had the swordfish while my wife had the chicken. We both enjoyed tasting from each other's plates. All in all, a great choice."

  • "Four diners this night, two of whom had never been to Story. Starters: Two beet salads, one caesar salad, and steak tartare for me -- excellent. I could have eaten six on them for an entree. The fellow who had the caesar salad was a bit disappointed not to have anchovies, but said it was good. Main dishes: soft-shell crab (what's not to like?), short rib, and two veal tenderloins, including mine. Loved it and the "tater tots" that came with it. The other tenderloin eater is a very experience diner and traveler, including many trips to Italy -- she said it was the best veal tenderloin she'd ever had, easy. So there! We had a wine by the glass because of the diversity of entrees. One gripe -- wine list top-heavy on high-dollar stuff."

  • "I appreciate Story's civic support of the Wayside Waifs Shelter with a % of their dinner revenue. Story is one of Kansas City's best dining experiences with an award winning chef. The food and service was as wonderful as always. I always recommend Story as one of our best restaurant experiences in our city...or any city, for that matter."

  • "Restaurant listed as $$ for cost. Misleading as this should be listed as $$$ as appetizers, dinner and drinks for two came to $130 without tip. Food and service were excellent, but price level was not expected for a casual evening dinner. "

  • "We had a fab meal with a wonderful soft shell crab and the beet salad for starters, the trout special for our entree, carrot cake for dessert. Service was perfect. Congrats to chef Carl for his recent well deserved recognitions. Such a treat to have consistently beautiful, delicious, honest food."

  • "food was phenomenal!! hated that we were seated so close to next tables. felt like we had to monitor what we talked about. waiter forgot to place order for our appetizer and then didn't comp us anything for forgetting. will try again but will hope for better service for such an expensive restaurant."

  • "Good food and drinks and service. Unfortunately the loud band playing at the Prairie Village Art Fair made us choose to eat indoors. "

  • "After JJ's was gone, and then Starkers I was heart broken. I had a friend who told me about Story a year ago and this is the first time I had a chance to go. The food is great and the service is wonderful. This is the kind of food you find in wine country. Fresh, I think some organics, local, and properly prepared. Don't miss it. "

  • "We sat outside and it was a great Spring evening. Our waitress was very accommodating and the food recommendations were outstanding. The Halibut was cooked to perfection and had great fixings! Same with the chicken and short ribs! Also, the rabbit ravioli was delish! "

  • "While we've dined at Story before, it was our friends first time there. We chose the restaurant because of our friends' desire for a really good wine list -- which Story unquestionably has. The evening exceeded our expectations and thoroughly impressed our friends. The food was impeccable as to imagination, presentation and taste, and we discovered a wine worthy of a second bottle. Matt, our server, was accurate and honest in his guidance, attentive but not overreaching. I haven't ever had a less-than-great experience at Story and this one certainly met that standard!"

  • "Went on the night they were celebrating their 3 yr anniversary. We've been about a dozen times over that period and the food/service was as good as its ever been. I love this place. "

  • "we appreciate the sunday night specials but also love their regular menu so it is lovely to be at the restaurant any night of the week."

  • "We have been to Story numerous times and have never been disappointed in any aspect of this restaurant. The Sunday night special was the hanger steak and it was prepared to perfection and was artfully presented on the plate. The white asparagus soup was a wonderful taste sensation - smooth, creamy, and the lemon zest added a spark to the mild soup. House coffee was especially good. Service was attentive without interfering, and the ambience was relaxing and cool on a warm evening."

  • "Okay...so we eat there at least twice per month and consider ourselves regulars...but we will never again eat here on a holiday/special occasion. Our mistake - making reservations on Mother's Day. We knew it would be busy, but the experience COULD have been much better than it was. Our food took forever - okay, they're busy. Our portion sizes? Odd. One dish was full and one was like a kiddie-meal. No point in complaining, our server was inattentive and we felt in the way. Bread? Well it comes normally with or about the same time as the drinks. Not this time. When I asked for it I was told by the Manager Jeff - "on days like this we don't just put it out, you have to ask for it". That just about summed it up. Totally disappointed."

  • "My wife and I find that our dining experiences in the Kansas City area tend to be inconsistent. For example, if we order three courses, two of the dishes may be beautifully executed while the third misses the mark. In other instances, we have had a delightful meal during one visit to a particular restaurant, but have been sorely disappointed upon returning to the same restaurant at a later date. This is not the case with Story, though. The food has always been flawless and the servers are very knowledgeable and attentive without hovering too closely. The dining room can be slightly noisy at full occupancy; however, I can accept that slight drawback being a result of the strikingly modern design of the restaurant."

  • "We have ate here on several occasions and have never been disappointed. Service is spot on and love the portion sizes here. Not huge or too small. Perfect amount of food. Don't forget dessert!!"

  • "It is soft shell crab season and Story's version is excellent! Beautifully prepared and presented. I also had the white asparagus soup & loved it as well. Story is consistently excellent with great service and never disappoints."

  • "After going to Story once, I thought the food was fabulous and the service was great. After going to Story twice, I decided this was my favorite restaurant in the Kansas City area. But after going three times, I realized that I was wrong. Story is the best restaurant in the United States (and I travel a lot to other cities). We are so lucky to have this restaurant. It is a gem. I especially like the owner. He comes to each table and is so humble given his vast talents. Besides being delicous, the food always is presented beautifully. Also if you have any dietary needs, they are so proactive and willing to customize any recipe."
