Diner Reviews
  • "Very pleasantly surprised by this new bistro on Hyde. Food was outstanding: creative, well presented, fantastic service. Not a full bar but extensive beer and wine list as well as some unique cocktails. Good for tapas as the portions of the "snacks" weren't massive. Definitely will go back soon! Dying to try the lasagna with the egg in the middle :)"

  • "Hadn't been able to get into Stones Throw for dinner so we went for brunch.. The menu is smaller than optimal, but the food is excellent, especially the pumpkin spiced beignets and potato balls with egg. Scrambled eggs were good not great but spinach and mushrooms were great. I'd read the service could be slow and the attitude a bit snooty, but we didn't find that to be the case at all. From our greeting by the maitre' d-ess to our server to our service, we had a warm and great experience. So glad to welcome this great restaurant to our neighborhood!"

  • "Great service, ambience, and had great starters (pate and pork belly), but the entrees were lackluster. The scallops were over salted, almost to the point of being inedible at the most and overpowering the other items on the plate at the minimum. The lasagna was a tad dense and so one note that we got tired of eating it."

  • "Service was exceptionally slow starting with having to wait more than a half hour past our reservation time. They provided a complementary glass of sparkling wine and a starter as compensation. After we were seated everything was still very slow. Menu was fairly limited but creative and all our entrees were excellent. The bar was busy with an extensive wine, beer, and cocktail list. It's a great place to stop for a drink."

  • "Love Stones Throw. Been there a few times and always order the carrot soup. It's outstanding as is the burger and the duck. We will keep coming back!"

  • "The beverage list is enourmous and wonderful. The food was but in my opinion overpriced and not so amazing. The crepes were good but I can make the same at home. The duck was very very fatty. They make a big deal about the donuts but even a fancy donut is still just a donut. Portions are very very small for prices. If you want to go have a drink and a snack on the side I'd say this is a great neighborhood place. The service was excellent. Very friendly folks. Ambience fun. However I would not go out of my way to eat here."

  • "Came here for my birthday and had a great time from the moment we stepped in and were greeted by the hostess. Service was magnificent from all the employees Service was very friendly and attentive. Wine list very well rounded. and the food was top notch. The duck pate and mousse with soft pretzels is a must to order. One of the highlights of the meal. The pork belly with crispy pigs ears was delicious as well, also highly recommend. for entrees we ordered the duck breast and thigh and also the leg of lamb. The duck again was outstanding, the second highlight of the evening's meal. Again highly recommended restaurant on service, attentiveness of staff and the food. will be coming here often"

  • "We had the Duck Pate, as well the Grilled Octopus both were excellent, the octopus was very tender. For Mains we had the Leg of Lamb and the Duck also very good, cooked to our liking, mid rare, tender and moist. The service was....attentive, friendly and knowledgable. The beer choices were very good. My friend had the Finriver dryhopped cider which was very good."

  • "Wine and water only. And the water was hot. Food was beautiful in presentation but nothing exceptional. Very cute place. I was just disappointed because the beverages were so limited. I had to drive so couldn't drink. Asked for an iced tea and nada. They gave me hot tap water. Ew. Food was good. Above average. Glad I did it but probably wouldn't go back. I recommend for everyone in the area to do it once. Esp foodies that like to restaurant hop."

  • "We were looking for a neighbourhood gem for our 3 year celebration and what do we find? this place..first off they give u a 5% uber discount..we had reservations for 8pm but got the table at 8:25pm the hostess made sure to make up for it by giving us a very comfy roomy table. The food i cannot describe is all ur childhood faves with a gastronomic twist..we got the squid ink pasta the puffed potatoes the grilled octopus and the scallops..the pasta takes it away..we want to try the burger and tater tots ...during dessert i told the server it was our anny so they sent us the not your grandma's apple pie with happy anniversary piped in chocolate..such a nice touch this dessert takes the cake it is the most amazing take on ur gramms apple pie."

  • "From the eclectic and well priced list of wines at the bar when we arrived to the final frisson of dessert Stones Throw was a delightful experience. The staff is young and very enthusiastic about their hopping joint- able to discuss the various complex elements of the food and wine with ease- and clearly thrilled to be part of something great- We loved the food- interesting flavors tastefully presented and at times surprising in texture and form- yet in a casual and fun atmosphere that makes you want to come back for more and soon- at reasonable prices given the quality of the fare- we all think this place is going to get very popular very soon!"

  • "What a surprise! Excellent food, despite a limited menu. The service is excellent!!"

  • "The front room is noisy so if you want a quiet place to talk to your guests, head to the back of the restaurant around the corner (who knew!) and it's delightful back there. Great service, great food, definitely going back. Make reservations 4 weeks out to get the time you want though as it's popular!"

  • "Unique menu items and great cocktails and craft beers. A perfect addition to an already bustling Hyde Street food scene."

  • "Not a lot of food selections compared to the large drinks menu but food was delicious. We went to brunch and the highlight was pumpkin donuts. Yum. Burger was also delish and it came with tater tots. The one thing we didnt care for is their kale salad. It was too salty with cheeses and anchovies. I like the space."

  • "Stones Throw is one of those restaurants that become by "go to" place when I want to share a special place with someone; when I want to show an out-of-towner what the SF dining scene is about; and simply when I want a great glass of wine paired with inventive food. I've been three times already and love everything. Some favorites: roasted root vegetables (what IS that sauce I want to lap up?!), squid ink pasta, grilled octopus with a real charred grill. And, the wine - yes, the wine! Few choices but the ones there are perfect pairs with the food and not the ordinary. Ex: last time we had a Sicilian wine from Mount Etna, nicely acidic, medium-bodied and tannic, plus rich minerality from its active volcano source, Yum!"

  • "Great variety of eclectic menu items including beverages. Really enjoyed the carafes of wine and fruit juices as well as the unique brunch starters particularly the donuts with pumpkin sauce. The egg dishes were not only great tasting, but were eye pleasing as well. The service was most attentive as well informative. Definitely a place to revisit next time we are in SF."

  • "We celebrated a birthday this past week. Food was unique and delicious. There was a nice birthday card created by the staff waiting at our table. A very nice detail which was much appreciated. The one thing which would have made our dining experience complete was missing ....and that was bread. I realize that restaurants in this city have opted for omitting this staple from their service. First, there are quite a few of us who are not gluten intolerant, therefore restaurants should have a small supply of bread and simply ask if patrons would prefer it with their meal. Much like people now do with water.....why not ask."

  • "Everything about the experience was wonderful. Our service was on point with descriptions and incredibly accomodating for my friend with wheat and dairy allergies. Kudos to the kitchen staff; every dish was beautiful and exploded with flavor. Looking forward to trying all of the dishes that I didn't have a chance to on this visit and digging deeper into their diverse wine list. Bravo Stones Throw!"

  • "Great new brunch spot. Went with a large group and ordered everything on the menu - the food was really impressive (particularly given how new the place is). The apps and sweet courses were better than the savory courses, but overall very high level of thought and execution. Despite the fact that we don't live anywhere near the restaurant, we would (and will) definitely make the trek there again."

  • "went with 3 friends on a busy saturday night and had the burger and vegetarian lasagna.we all started with the tomato wafers which were really good and a fun way to start the meal. We also ordered the roasted root vegetable salad that was very fresh and tasty. One of my favorite parts of the meal was the bacon cheddar tater tots that came with the burger, they were gone in a flash! The service was exceptional and the server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I will definitely be back!"

  • "Snacks and appetizers courses were outstanding, especially the ever so tender octopus."

  • "Really enjoyed this restaurant. It's a bit on the noisy side, but we thought the food was interesting/complex yet viscerally appealing--too often the two do not go together. The snacks, appetizers, and mains were all very successful. The desserts were perhaps a shade less so, but maybe I just wanted a real piece of apple pie rather than the apple pannacotta I received. That's my problem, not theirs! Largish, thoughtful, and complex beverage menu. Overall a great place, with really nice and genuine staff. They have achieved the Holy Grail of San Francisco dining--a casual place with truly impressive food. Last word: it's very much worth the Russian Hill parking fuss; I have already made a reservation to return!"

  • "This was a great surprise. The food was excellent and we left full and very happy. It is not a romantic spot, but definitely a good place in the neighborhood for a fun night out with good food. Would definitely recommend going."

  • "This place is absolutely amazing, we came here for valentines day and were just blown away. They had a prefixed 4 course meal with an optional wine pairing for each. My fiancé went with the wine and I had a beer from Netherlands. I went with the oysters, risotto, short ribs and bananas foster, she went with the crab rolls, asparagus soup(so delicious!!!) ahi tuna and a bread pudding. The wine paired really well with each of her choices and our waiter explained everything in detail. Even though we spent well over $200 it was totally worth the experience!"

  • "Needed a reservation for Valentine's day for the first time in years and thought ahead to get a table. Most places were booked and luckily Stone's Throw had an availability. I had read some reviews but honestly never heard of this place till I had seen it in open table. The wine list was small but what they did have was perfect. The food was amazing. Truly, though, we didn't know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised! Everything that was placed in front of me I devoured plus I tasted almost everything that my friends ordered as well. Literally everything was delicious. Not to mention that the service was super friendly and accommodating to my gluten intolerance. I've already recommended this restaurant to two other people."

  • "These guys know what they're doing. From the moment you walk in you will be treated great, and your palate will be treated even better. 5 stars on the food 5 stars on the service. A must try in SF. Parking is a little tough so I recommend an uber service, but you'll get 5 percent off your bill so chances are the ride is free."

  • "Beautifully developed flavors, unique concepts, perfect portion sizes. Duck and lamb dishes exceptionally flavored and perfectly cooked. Relaxed environment with high end food (quality). Servers attentive without overkill. Lemon dessert luscious. Only slightly negative comment, is wine list format. It is interesting, but formatted in a unique manner. Not classified by varietals...they are all mixed together and take more time to find what you're looking for. Wonderful new spot, and nice to have it in Russian Hill vs. the Mission District!"

  • "The hamburger is a perfect example of how Stones Throw is taking the ordinary, keeping it right in the comfort food zone, and yet making it so much better. It looks and tastes just like a good cheese burger, only I couldn't stop eating it until it was all gone. Same with their tater-tots. I asked the Bartender to come up with a cocktail that matched my food, and he whipped together something I'd never heard of, that was absolutely delicious. Yum."

  • "I have a friend who lives down the block, so Stone's Throw seemed a great spot to celebrate her birthday. We shared snacks, a first course and a main course. We were delighted by the presentation, flavors and whimsy in the dishes. Really very masterful in an understated way, which is au rigeur for popular neighborhood spot. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to friends. The service was also excellent: friendly, engagine, but non-invasive."
