Diner Reviews
  • "It was very good and much improved since it first opened."

  • "My girlfriend and I went in there to celebrate our one year anniversary last sunday and had an amazing experience with the best server"

  • "This was our first meal at Stones Throw but it won't be our last. We fully enjoyed every dish that came out which started with the Salmon Mousse. Da Burger came with these amazing tots and the burger was incredibly moist and tasty. The pork belly hash wasn't what I expected but the pork belly fat just melted in your mouth except for the crispy skin. Can something so fattening taste so good? Neither dish disappointed and not a single morsel was left on the plates. Service was fantastic as well. We had people check in on us periodically either filling water for us or asking if we needed anything else. All pulled off with great expertise. We will want to see how their dinners are now that we had such a great experience with the brunch."

  • "It is very hard to find a restaurant with great food and reasonable prices. Stone's Throw breaks this rule and provides a wonderful dining experience with excellent food AND reasonable prices. On top of that the service is excellent and knowledgeable. Every dish we picked was at least very good but most of them excellent such as squid pasta, the pate plate, octopus starter, the duck main course and ohhh the beignets dessert. And besides excellent food a great wine and beer list. Absolutely my new favorite restaurant."

  • "Our Uber driver recommended this place for an anniversary dinner and wow, did it live up to the hype. The service was impeccable, they made us feel incredibly welcome, thanking us for celebrating our anniversary with them. The food was fantastic. Really fun place."

  • "I can't say enough about this place. The food that they create is truly a work of art and a pleasure to eat. I have yet to have a dish that I haven't been completely in love with and I really enjoy bringing friends and family out for a culinary treat here when they come to town. The servers treat you like royalty, the wine list is superb -- not just California wines! -- and the bartenders know their craft and put a smile on your face, but all of that is just icing on the cake that is Chef Halverson's creations."

  • "Food & service excellent. Creative blend of flavors textures and colors. On my list to return."

  • "The food was lovely. Our server (whom I've had twice now) rushes us and is focused but not friendly and wasn't helpful when it came to answering our questions. We left feeling like we were in her way rather than that we paid $200 for an experience. We don't go out a lot and we really wanted to calmly enjoy the evening. We really felt like she was trying to rush us out of there. Hope this was isolated and that we will have a better experience if we come back."

  • "We loved everything about Stones Throw. In fact we're going back again this week! Jason's menu and cooking are inspired. Innovative without being pretentious. Everything we tried was delicious. The service is friendly and very attentive without being intrusive. Bob and Tai made us feel very much at home."

  • "We started our dinner with a few starters: Four tiny delicate puffed potato & eggs were absolutely tasty. Egg yolks were still runny in the middle of the puffed potato. Pork belly & crispy pig's ears were a little oily. Grilled octopus in three different flavors was tender and delicious. Entrée of crispy duck breast was seasoned and moist. NY strip steak was seared and charred perfectly to our request, and was juicy and scrumptious. We shared all dishes family style. Waitress, Danielle, was friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We sat in the corner by a large table of noisy drinkers in the middle of the dining area. The noise level was much too loud to hold conversation comfortably. Servers were quick and efficient."

  • "The food was tops. I had the duck dish. Yummy, but also the atmosphere was fab, particularly the great staff."

  • "We stumbled upon this place and found it to be truly amazing. The Hostess was adorable and very accomdating. The entire staff did every thing they could to make the dinner a memorable experience. Food was beautifully prepared and very tasty. Loved the duck! The Bananna Foster was decadent."

  • "Very well trained and friendly staff. Appetizers and entrees were great...except the tater tots that came with the delicious burger, were too heavy and rich... fries would have worked. My nephew said it was the best steak ever and the fava pasta was perfect. I was looking forward to the chocolate bananas foster, but it was just okay, same with the peanut butter and jelly donuts. All in all, a great meal and would definitely return!"

  • "I've been meaning to try Stone's Throw for a while and glad I tried, but won't be going back. While the food was creative, few ingredients were tasty, several dishes were noticeably salty and not cohesive in flavor. Overall I didn't find any dish memorable and leaving me craving to come back next time. I found neither the food nor the whole experience to be matched in price. During dinner time after 7/7.30 pm it became too loud to hold conversation comfortably."
    Dined on 7/23/2014
  • "We had a great meal,,very thoughtful and creative. Some favorites were the potato puffs, pate, corn soup and the grilled octopus."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "I booked this place thinking it was typical bistro was expecting the same menu I get at most tavern type places. I'm not sure why I thought that from the description. The food turned out to be fantastic. Perfectly cooked salmon and steak. Amazing pâté. Tomato Cream wafers could have had more taste. Very attentive staff including head chef and our server Danielle. Raves to this place."

  • "Food was outstanding. Service was attentive. My main complaint was we were placed by a large group in the back and they were very noisy. They should not have tried to fill the two small back tables with the larger group there. Food while tasty was not overly generous with portions. Would still recommend. Parking is miserable. Parked at ghiradelli and took cab from there."

  • "After two visits, one on a date and one with a group, I am a huge fan of Stones Throw. Everything on the short menu is at least very good; a few dishes (like the squid ink pasta, the octopus and the duck) are phenomenal. The staff is friendly and caring, with a lot of personality, and the pacing is not rushed. I live that the place is full of people from the neighborhood and that Stones Throw makes that a priority. The beer and wine lists are unique and interesting. I just wish the menu were longer!"

  • "from the minute we arrived til the very end every minute here was special.Every course was special. We tried every starter and they were incredible. The wine list was excellent and service right on.this is a perfect 10 find."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "Great food. We had the squid ink pasta (very flavorful), octopus (very well done, one of the best we've had) salmon, corn soup and duck. For the dessert had the bananas foster and donuts. Both were fantastic."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "The food is some of the best in San Francisco right now, but the most exceptional thing about Stone's Throw is the level of customer service that is definitely not seen very often. From the host to the wait person to the owner, they were all professional, attentive, and proactive. My group ordered quite a few things from the small but well thought out menu and each dish was unique and fun and delicious. I cannot wait to return. The restaurant suggests using Uber to get there and I can see why - parking is difficult to impossible in this area. But, for sure, do not let parking deter you from trying this great new restaurant."

  • "good food, good service. great neighborhood spot for Sunday brunch."

  • "Second time at Stones Throw, and a great meal again! The puffed egg and smoked salmon snacks are amazing. Duck entree is amazing. And tater tots that come with the burger are reason alone to order it!"

  • "great food, great service the perfect neighborhood spot. Bartender Tyler is definitely a reason why we keep coming back, his knowledge and warmth is exceptional."

  • "This is now one of my favorite restaurants in the city. It's fit for vegetarians as well, with lots of options. I loved their appetizer of the little rolls with creme fraiche that had the flavor of fresh tomatos with a fava bean dip. So yummy. The Banana Foster was also amazing. A definite must try on this restaurant and the waitresses are extremely pleasant and friendly."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "The best meal in quite a while: squid ink conchiglie pasta, tomato cream wafers, octopus okonomiyaki, smoked salmon rillettes, fava pyramid pasta, were all bursting with flavor and truly unique, like nothing I've had before. The desserts were playful and delicious: peanut butter and jelly donuts and a deconstructed apple pie. Service was attentive, friendly, knowledgeable and simply incredible. It's clear that everyone on this team is a pro. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Stones Throw was the highlight of my trip to SF. Every single aspect of the experience was perfect. Top quality food, extremely creative menu, and the staff is exceptional. This will definitely be a restaurant I visit every time I come to SF."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "First, the food was really good. I didn't get to try everything, but we had some pancakes and duck hash. They were both very good. We will have to go back and try some other things to have a full sense of the place, but I am definitely going back. They had a great beer and wine list (which we didn't have)... I wish they had some additional non-alcoholic beverages available on the menu. I don't want to drink all the time."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "loved all the "snacks" and the pork belly was decadent! Great wine list! And the staff was helpful and energetic!"
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "I ate here with my girlfriend and everyhing was absolutely amazing, this is now one of my favorite SF spots."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "We didn't make it to the entrees since the snacks and appetizers all sounded so good. Our favorite was the SQUID INK CONCHIGLIE PASTA, delicious. Sat at the bar where the bartender was wonderful about recommending both food and beer selections."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "Came for brunch with 2 friends and their 8 month old. I wouldn't call the food menu itself kid-friendly, but the restaurant was more than happy to make sure we had room for a stroller and provided a high-chair for when the baby woke up and was ready to interact with us at the table - which is great because many other places don't even have room for a stroller. All in all, highly recommended!"
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "The food here is great. While the dishes size is medium the quality is great and the beer\wine selection is also superb."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "The snacks before brunch were AMAZING, namely the puffed potato. We would definitely go back for that dish alone!"
    Dined on 6/1/2014
  • "We tried Stones Throw, having nearly always had good experiences at Fat Angel, the proprietor's other establishment. The menu is limited to 4 items each on the appetizers and entree lists. The service was very slow. For example, we waited 20 minutes after ordering glasses of wine for them to arrive. "
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "Very little value. We went ther for my bros Bday. The said they were going to give him a little card but they didn't. "
    Dined on 5/29/2014
  • "Very cozy atmosphere. Pretty busy. Service was very good. Wine was excellent. Unfortunately, the food wasn't very tasty. The deconstructed apple pie was a sore disappointment."
    Dined on 5/28/2014
  • "Literally the first time I came here everyone was so freindly and amazing. The food was fantasitic. Honestly I feel everyone should eat here. The atmosphere was great as well. The food will bring you to a whole different world. Hands down one of my favorite places and I've went back ever since!! I just can't get enough!"
