Michel and Patricia Jean, owners of Stissing House, bring decades of noted culinary experience, including Provence in New York City, to their restaurant in the Hudson River Valley. The Jeans came to Dutchess County, NY where they discovered The Stissing House, an historic 1782 tavern, after an almost 20-year run at their New York City restaurant Provence. One of America’s oldest and longest-operating restaurants, The Stissing House features a wood-burning oven and grill sizzling with Michel’s Provençal-inspired cuisine. With a more sophisticated décor but period details intact, The Stissing House has become a landmark culinary destination. The food: simple, delicious, robust and compelling Provençal cuisine. In every meal: seasonal, locally-sourced, organic grass-fed beef, poultry and vegetables.   • "I've been here several times and love the food, ambience and service. I think maybe I just hit a stressed weekend. I was in the July 4th weekend and the service was not very good. The wait staff were visibly doing the best they could, but there seemed to be a combination of not enough waitstaff and the kitchen not handling the weekend holiday volume. It wasn't just us but we knew it wasn't the wait staff's fault. Once we got the food, it was great (not sure I can recommend the steak tartar, which is very good but is barely an appetizer version at an entree price). Really love this place though and will go back, just hope they can keep up."

  • "This has always been one of the top restaurants in Northern Dutchess County. But the chef, Michel Jean, is taking the restaurant to a new level with his daily specials that focus on whatever is best of the season. Recently, we've enjoyed delicious courses that took advantage of the seasonal ramps, morels and soft shells. IMHO, this is the best restaurant in the area."

  • "A Hudson Valley gem dripping with American history. Our Mother's Day table for five was given a private room -- without request. Fireplaces, 225-year-old wide-pine plank flooring, great food, and an extraordinarily friendly staff. The matron was easy and elegant. A glimpse back in history over lunch or dinner. The only downside was my seven-year-old daughter peering around corners for the ghosts of Washington and Lafayette. In an era of IPads and Netflix, I'd pay extra for that."

  • "Disappointing. Several items on menu not available, and the special chocolate soufflé was not actually soufflé, but a dense chocolate cake instead. We have had many wonderful dinners at Stissing House and will not be returning for brunch."

  • "My husband and I dine at Stissing House on occasion and have had excellent meals in the past. Unfortunately Easter dinner was disappointing. I had a strip steak that was ordinary, could have had the same thing at Outback. My husband had duck confit, which consisted of arugula, some overlooked veg's and one leg. (Usually the veg's are a delicious variety of items and cooked perfectly.) The dessert was very good, some type of chocolate in a Creme anglaise. As was the drink, black currant basil mojito! You want to order the fava beans! Not sure it's on the menu, but they always have them."

  • "Excellent food, especially in this neck of the woods. Greeted at the door so warmly and all the staff were friendly. Excellent service. The building is a large old inn and absolutely gorgeous inside with a relaxed rustic feel. The owner really understands client service in detail. This restaurant really delivers on all fronts. Can't wait to take my friends and family there!"

  • "Unfortunately, the food would have been much better but everything lacked seasoning. Escargots looked great but there was way too much parsley, very little garlic and almost no butter! I'm very fussy about the temperature of dishes, and my food came to the table warm but not hot. For the money, there are better restaurants in the area."

  • "My wife myself and a visiting niece tried The Stissing House during restaurant week and were very pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was wonderful, the menu was fantastic and the staff we VERY helpful, friendly and efficient. The portion sizes were ample ( I don't recall ever having a dozen escargot in an appetizer serving before). The hangar steak was perfectly done and very tender. The mussels were delicious and the cod special was excellent too. I would recommend The Stissing House to anyone who appreciates fine dining."

  • "Driven by the Stissing House a few times and was really curious about the old inn. Just a beautiful old inn. Service staff was nice and accommodating. The food was really great. My wife and I shared a Kale & Butternut Squash Salad that was really great. We also shared the mussels appetizer which was wonderful and was a meal in itself. For an entree I had the hanger steak, cooked perfectly. I look forward to my next visit there..."

  • "First offered up a horrible seat in the bar, but then one by the fireplace (why didn't they do that first?). Hanger steak was good but casolett (sp) was dry and fatty (beans and pork and sausage). Meat was very sparse in it and it was mushy. Would not order that again even though it was on special. Drinks were extremely expensive. The table next to us was pretty loud. The 2 dollar share charge on a salad when you each get an expensive dinner and drinks was nuts. Also, they gave us the wrong bill (over charged by 70 dollars)."

  • "It was the Saturday before Christmas and this place was full of large tables with families getting ready for Christmas. Even with that, our waitress made sure that we were not left out and made every attempt to ensure that we got very good service. It has been my experience that the food is consistently good here - my steak was a little overcooked, but other than that, everything else was excellent."

  • "Stissing House, in an old inn on the crossroads of the small town of Pine Plains in Dutchess County, is worth a visit. Whether you want French classics or original pizza or "current market" veggies, there's something good here for you. The main room, with bar and open pizza oven, is warm & friendly and casual. Dining rooms are also available that are more formal. It's pretty much the only game in town in Pine Plains, but its owners, formerly of the restaurant Provence in NYC, make it a worthy choice."
