At the bar to await our table (we were early, the table ready right on time), we were treated by the bartender like long lost friends. He made a great cocktail for one of our party, and asked the Sommelier to guide us on wine selection. While you can spend a couple of grand on wine here, you don't need to just to have a wonderful glass or bottle. We explained our taste preference (Cabernet) and we were provided with the first of what would be many fine, fine wines. Then we ate... They were knowledgeable about the menu, had very prompt service, and had a neat partner system to accomplish this fast service. When picking out the perfect wine, they had a sommelier that hit the bullseye for our taste. The teamwork, hospitality, and great atmosphere made our special evening a wonderful night we will always remember. Complements and thanks to the chef as well. We told our server we wanted to know what we might be eating before picking a wine, and he belatedly brought menus (including a weird caviar menu "to be added to the dish of your choice for $40". Sheesh!
The wine list ridiculously overpriced (anyone for a vertical LaTache 3 years for $5k?) making the wine pairing $60/per seem reasonable The paired wines were nice and well-suited to the dishes. Stuns the SensesThis was our first visit to New Orleans and after visiting some of the renowned stalwarts of NO cuisine (and their heavy meals)we found Stella! Stella! was a class act from start to finish, from the first amuse bouche to the final plate of bonbons. We selected the four course menu with wine pairings. Each course dazzled the senses. The staff was well informed about the ingredients of the dishes and the reasons behind the wine selections. The pace of the meal was appropriately managed. The prices are not for the weak of pocketbook but it is worth every penny. Our only disappointment was that someone in shorts was at the next table which lessened the ambience. Yes, it is expensive, but it was truly a "5-star" dining experience, beginning with the caviar service, a glass of vodka where the vodka was frozen with liquid nitrogen (then more vodka added to create a steaming, bubbling COLD vodka), to the 4-course tasting menu paired with exquisite wines. The service matched the quality of the food and we had a wonderful, unforgettable meal. They were all BEYOND exceptional! It's the kind of place that you can walk into and pretty much order anything and assume it will come out amazing. Not one person out of 4 of us had anything we disliked (this included the vegetarian in our group). The service was impeccable. I only dropped it to 4 stars b/c of the price. I have no problem going out and spending a lot of money for a good meal. In fact, I did it the night before at another upscale 5 star restaurant in NO where my dinner companion and I had 4 remarkable courses AND a bottle of wine...and it was cheaper than Stella. The food was great, problem is it's just way over priced. Wine list had far to many wines near 100 dollars and not 50 dollars. The fact is, for what I got I would have been happy to pay 200+ dollars, not 400 with tip. There are other restaurants in New Orleans where you will get alot more bang for your buck if you are looking for great food and a wonderful atmosphere.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMUnnecessarily expensiveWhile I've been to Stella! several times before, I'd never picked up the tab; nor do I remember that you only had two choices from the menu: %85 or %110 (or whatever it was).
I had recommended Stella! to out of town people (who once again, picked up the tab) but I was embarrassed that the only choice was a prix fixe menu.
And, because the steep price was the only option, I expected exception fare. The fava or lima beans on my fish were rock hard. Inexcusable. The extra $55 beef appetizer I ordered was presented with great fanfare, but the brick over was stone cold.
I'd like to recommend a little more diversity in your pricing options. I'll inquire before I book again; otherwise, I'll steer my guests other places.

Taste of everything was outstanding. As always the service was superb. It is very expensive for New Orleans. But meals like this is Vegas or NYC would be twice as much. The scallop starters were delicious and well flavored with seared bok choy,
garlic and a delicious sauce. The second courses, Asian chili prawns and the
Cochon de Lait were cooked to perfection and the pork. The entrees, striped
bass and lobster were delicately flavored and excellent. The wines and
the desserts were also delicious.
The wait staff were very knowledgeable and courteous.
