Diner Reviews
  • "Took a friend here for her birthday on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was pretty full, but not crazy busy, and service was pretty slow and not attentive. We were there for almost 45 minutes before we placed an order for any food because our waitress just wasn't coming around to us. Even though I put in a not in my opentable reservation, and called the restaurant, I still had to tell the waitress at the end of the meal that we were celebrating a birthday. Food was good, and the atmosphere is nice and chill, but they need to work on providing a better overall dining experience."

  • "Our server was excellent but pizza was just fair, lacking any taste."

  • "My Dad was visiting from out of the state and I figured we would make a reservation at Stella Barra since all my friends have raved about their amazing pizza. We order the burrata cheese as an appetizer, it was okay but definitely not worth the $11 (the grilled grapes was certainly the best part of that dish). I ordered the farm egg and prosciutto pizza, which I switched for my Dad's sausage pizza. Basically, the food was okay but way too expensive for what you get. Also the music is so obnoxiously loud that it makes it hard to carry on a conversation. I'd say skip and go to one of Chicago's hundreds of other awesome pizza places."

  • "First was a basic pepperoni, ordered gluten free. Toppings were average, the crust was over cooked. Lamb meat balls had a lot of non lamb filler, but were ok. Second pizza was regular thin crust mushroom with sausage. Toppings good and generously applied, but again the crust was horrible, over cooked and dry....store bought frozen pizzas are better than Stella and the kitchen would do well to visit some of the veteran thin crust spots around the country to learn how to make thin crust. I live in the neighborhood so really want this pizza to be great, it is unfortunately way below average. The bar, atmosphere and service are terrific so I will be back for a drink, before I eat somewhere else in the neighborhood."

  • "Our server was great, she made recommendations on both drinks and pizza decisions ( both were excellent) Food came out quickly. We made reservations on Open Table, and when we arrived the restaurant was about half full, plenty of tables we were sat directly by the entrance to the kitchen and service stations. There were plenty of other table. It was not too bothersome, but there was a lot of commotion."

  • "We came right after the Blue Man Group showing on a Sunday afternoon with 2 kids (5,7). We had a really nice experience. Burrata was wonderful, roasted cauliflower was good and the pizzas were delightful. The bakery in between Summer House and the pizzeria has amazing cookies and bread. We would def come back."

  • "I absolutely love this restaurant! Since my first time eating here I make it a point to come at least once a month, if not more. I also make sure to introduce all of my friends who haven't tried it to this place. The service is amazing and no matter what you have, everything on the menu is delicious! The wine isn't too bad either and the servers are very knowledgable about what's on the menu! I will always recommend this place."

  • "Perfect thin crust pizza. Loved the kale one. Brussel sprouts very good. Green salad had a good dressing that paired well with the pizzas. Wine list had lots of choices."

  • "I went to Stella Barra with a group of 4 girlfriends and expected the usual great meal which LEY restaurants have always given. The burratta and brussel sprouts were the appetizers we chose to start with as well as some wine. For our dinner we chose two different pizzas and a salad. The pizzas were either too greasy or too bland. We actually only ate one and because the other was too bland. The salad was good but just a typical chopped salad. Judging from other reviews, I am not alone in thinking Stella Barra is just missing something. I have confidence that LEY will whip this menu into shape and it will get much better. For now, I'll go back for appetizers and wine but not for pizza or a full meal."

  • "The food was great but we were seated in the back room which must be the patio in the summer. They put us at a random high bar table in the front of a room full of regular tables so we felt like we were on display; it was very awkward and made for a bad dining experience. Considering we had a reservation I expected to be seated in the main room. Not sure I would go back."

  • "Had high expectations and hopes when I was suggests this restaurant. Saturday night reservation set to go, meeting friends. Ambiance was nice....until we were seated in a tent out back. Despite expressing desire and concern to be seated in the main area, little attention was payed to the fact. The food took far too long to come out for a few simple pizzas. We dine out rather frequently and the experience was simply below par for Stella. A few simply things could have really made for a different and enjoyable experiences"

  • "My friend and I couldn't get reservations at Summer House so we went to Stella Barra before a show at Steppenwolf. We had a spinach and kale salad that was fine. We also ordered the guanciale and roasted onion pizza. It was totally overwhelmed by a layer of arugula. Even when I picked the greens off the pizza, I still couldn't taste any guanciale or roasted onions. I wished we'd ordered the margarita pizza, thinking it's harder to go wrong with that."

  • "I really liked my cocktail- a rye-based old fashioned with the world's most giant ice cube. It cost $11, which I think is too steep, but unfortunately it seems pretty typical these days. A friend ordered an Allagash, which I think cost $8. That's a little ridiculous. We ordered a spinach/kale salad that had dates and it was delicious. For the pizza, we had a butternut squash half, a fennel half, an arugula half, and a spinach/kale half. They were all delicious because the crust is awesome. My personal favorite was the butternut squash, which surprised me because I often find butternut squash too sweet. I think the pizzas are fairly priced. Service was excellent. Kids get to make their own pizzas."

  • "Took a friend of mine here for a girls night and we had a great time! The brussels sprouts were out of this world as a starter along with some white wine. Then for dinner we did a split pizza (half red sauce with sausage and half white sauce with spinach) I'd go full red sauce next time. The sausage pizza was awesome! Stella Barra has a nice bar feel to it with a TV to watch sports at their bar, or you can sit near the pizza oven and watch the chef bake pizzas. Overall great night!"

  • "Great true thin crust pizza, good flavor without tons of cheese. Best pizza in the hood. Have only tried pizza, salad and Brussels sprouts but all was good. Waited a long time for table having shown up without res on a Friday night once but bar staff took great care of us."

  • "Food was blading, at best. Service was mediocre, at best. Noisy to the max. Unable to accommodate any food allergies. And restrooms are out the restaurant, thru the lobby, and all the way in the back of the sister restaurant. Disappointing addition to the Lettuce Entertain You family."

  • "Stella Barra offers great pizza with a variety of toppings. The baked brussel sprouts are delicious, as is everything else. Will come back again, can't wait until they are open for lunch."

  • "Delicious! Great selection of pizzas, appetizers, sides, cocktails, wine and more. We were too full to try the desserts, but I'm sure they are excellent too. They also have a bakery case full of desserts to tempt you on your way in/out."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed our food at Stella Barra. The pizza was super thin, just like I like it. The brussel sprouts were great, too. I thought the beer options were a bit sub par and were quite expensive for what they were. It was a vibrant atmosphere and a bit loud, but not too bad (we were also sitting right under a speaker). It was also quite dark, especially compared to the adjoining restaurant. Overall, it was a good dining experience."

  • "I came to Stella Barra with a bunch of my friends on a Sunday night not only did I love the atmosphere, (dark lit, warm, energetic) but I loved the food! I ordered five pizzas - they came at a perfect time, enough time so that I had time to talk and chat with my friends but not too much time that are stomachs were rumbling. Overall, it was a perfect night and made my birthday 10x as special. Kitchen view"

  • "Staff was so great and friendly to us and my friend's three year old son. They let him sit up by the chefs and make his own pizza. We really appreciated the attention they gave him!"

  • "I may have had some of the best service of my life at Stella Barra. Our server was training, but she was knowledgeable, attentive, enthusiastic, and friendly. The server training her was great too, and helped me pick out a nice wine to complement my meal. We ordered meatballs, pasta, and a thin crust pizza that was half squash and bacon (can't remember the exact name) and half truffle. It was one of the most delicious pizzas I've ever had. I appreciate a super thin crust and fresh ingredients. The squash pizza was a perfect blend of sweet and savory. There is a bit of a corporate feel to the restaurant, but the outstanding service and food made up for it."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant and the four of us found this a great place to go before the theater. The food was tasty but the waiters should know more about the food on the menu. I will definitely come back and try the other side. The music could also be a little quieter."

  • "I have now eaten at Stella Barra twice. Both times the food was outstanding and got me back for my second visit. That being said, the service is fair at best. Knowing it is a new restaurant my group has given them some slack but coming from the LEYE group, I would expect more"

  • "From start to finish, the pizza, drinks, bread, and salad were all spectacular. Both the mushroom pizza and butternut squash pizzas melted in my mouth! The butterscotch dessert was incredible - one of the best desserts I've ever had in my life. Very reasonably priced for the amazing quality of food :) we will definitely be back."

  • "I enjoyed the food, but the service was not great. The main course came before we were even finished with our appetizers, and then they overcrowded our table. Additionally, when we had the pizza wrapped up to take home, they brought them back to our table with the bill, despite us still having dessert left as part of restaurant week - which I had to remind our server. Finally, when the apple pie dish came out for dessert, it was not even luke warm. I told our server that and that I didn't need another, we were full, but then a separate person came back with a new one. It was very disjointed."

  • "The bruschetta pizza was arguably the best pizza I've ever had... I loved their speciality moscow mule type drink and our waitress was on top of everything."

  • "When I was growing up we went to Shakey's to celebrate a birthday. Now it looks like the kids are going to Stella Barra. We were there early (5:30) and the place was packed with kids. The two large screen TVs did nothing for me. About the food: it looked perfect, it was made with interesting ingredients, but it was flat and flavorless. Don't know how you lose the fennel flavor in a fennel pizza, but it was just boring and was a little sweet for my taste."

  • "Overall, their pizza crust is delicious, but don't plan on bringing any home. It does not reheat. Also, not a kid friendly environment which is surprising in LP neighborhood. Our server was great, and she was great to our child as well. I am thankful we went at 5:30 though. Probably as late as I would bring a child. There is no kids menu, but thankfully our child eats fancy pizzas. You have to pay for the butter for the bread, but I'm telling you, pay the $1 for it! It is worth it! Personally, not somewhere I am dying to go back and try, but go once and see what you think. On the way out, buy the Peanut Butter Cookie, it is worth the calories and the time on the treadmill the next day!"

  • "I am a big fan of Stella Barra having been once before. Made a reservation for 8:00pm on a Friday night and as looking forward to pizza and wine. We arrived at 8:00 and the host told us right away they were running behind about 15 minutes and to go have a drink at the bar. We stood in the corner and after about 25 minutes we checked in at the host stand and explained we were all here, and where to find us because we had not been seated. The woman at the host stand rudely said "I know where you are." We waited another 15 minutes before we checked in again and she told us it would be another 20 minutes. Finally, around 9:05 we were finally seated. No one apologized for the wait, or even acknowledged it. It was highly disappointing."
