Diner Reviews
  • "The food was okay, the service was poor. The people were friendly but seemed like they hadn't been trained."

  • "Ossobucco was excellent, we tried 5 different entrees , all were delicious and presentation was excellent. Owner on premise, he was friendly and hospitable. My only complaint, the wait staff although plesant provided slow service , was not as polished as they should be for an upscale dining experience ."

  • "We were disappointed to find the same 202 Market restaurant and was expecting a brand new Stephano's Italian restaurant. There was much of the same 202 menu with some slight changes but did not find a robust Italian menu. The staff and owners are all the same from 202 Market. Regret we probably will not return."

  • "Not sure what we expected, especially when we found the restaurant dining room almost empty at 7:30pm (we later found out that the outdoor dining was packed!). The food was fresh, light and well seasoned. Portions were very appropriate (not overwhelming). Chicken Marsala and the stew were fabulous. Pasta was extremely light and flavorful. The tirimasu was a perfect finish. The dining room was excellent setting (music a little loud). Definitely a return visit, especially for downtown residents!"

  • "This place recently changed their menu (again, it seems to happen every other month). We decided to try out the new Italian fare and were disappointed. Service was terrible... staff could not answer basic questions about the menu, and everything took an extremely long time. We were one of only two tables in the restaurant for dinner (?). Tables are not intimate or comfortable. Of all the great restaurants in downtown Roanoke, I would stay away from this one. It is still the same poorly managed 202."

  • "This is our "special"night out place. We've been here a lot and never let down. The filet is the best in town and they have a great wine list. Just absolutely fantastic"

  • "Good, varied menu. Accommodates special requests. Service was good, though sometimes it can be inconsistent."

  • "The place was not what I expected - had only small round tables, no place to seat a table of four who wanted more than just drinks. We were there at the beginning of the evening, some of the tables didn't look clean like they missed wiping them down at the end of the night - chairs had crumbs on them....which makes you wonder how clean the kitchen is. However, the food was very good, but the service was a bit disjointed. "

  • "My husband and I chose Stephano's for dinner returning from a conference in DC. Living in "foodie friendly" Asheville, NC, and my husband being an Italian from Montréal, we expect a lot from a restaurant, especially an Italian restaurant. We were not disappointed-in fact, we were amazed at the quality of not only the food, but the service, the ambiance, the music-everything was superb! The pasta is home-made and delicious. We both had the Pappardelle Bolognese, which was divine. We had the flourless chocolate lava cake for dessert, which was wonderful, and very artfully presented. We will most definitely return. We hope that Roanoke embraces this gem of a restaurant!"

  • "Ate dinner with another couple. Food/ambience/service were all very good, and setting was perfect for talking, not a lot of background noise. Had a separate area with live music as well as outdoor seating, both of whih seemed great also but we opted for more intimate setting. "

  • "This was my third attempt to eat at 202 and I was greatly disappointed (mirroring my last two experiences). The Sunday Brunch did not have a "brunch" item, but merely powdered eggs, frozen sausage, and overcooked bacon. There was a salad bar with only lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers, and desert pieces that were under cooked. I tried hard to over look these mishaps, but the owner insisted to hover over my shoulder the majority of my time sitting down with my wife-to-be. We will not be returning to 202, even though we live a few blocks away. It's an absolute shame that someone owning this establishment has allowed so many discrepancies take place over a lengthy period of time"

  • "4 of us ate here last Sat. evening to celebrate a job offer. The restaurant had a very classy ambiance with low lighting and an intimate number of tables. We started dinner with a bottle of wine and the 202 Market Spread (4 spreads with grilled pita and toasted bread). The spreads were delicious and just the right amount of appetizer to split between 4 people. Our service was excellent, and the owner came over to speak with us and make sure that everything went well. For dinner I enjoyed the Pappardele Bolognaise, which upon first glance looked like a small portion but turned out to be just the right amount of food to fill me up. My boyfriend had the 18 Hour Braised Short Rib and also enjoyed his dinner. Dessert was a mix of 4 gelatos. Yum!"

  • "My fiancé and I went to this restaurant for dinner and expected a romantic well run restaurant based on reviews online. We were sat down in a lovely room with good ambiance but the waiter did not appear for at least 10 mins to take our drink orders. Another 10 went by before he brought them. Every stage of service was slow and customers around us were all complaining. We received the wrong appetizers and no apology. We were informed after 3 hours that the reason it was taking to long was that their credit card machine was down. The food was fine but the reason I won't go back was the poor service and lack of communication to patrons about issues along with no sign of an apology for all the problems."

  • "While nearby construction may have lessened the numbers at the restaurant, I had a great meal, accentuated by great service and ambience. I definitely would recommend this restaurant."

  • "Our waiter Justin recognized immediately that we were new to the restaurant and unaccustomed to the level of finery on display. The food was incredible; easily the best chicken I have ever tasted. Justin recommended lime mint sorbet for dessert coupled with a lemon sorbet; amazing decision. He even brought out cotton candy at the end. The entire night went by smoothly. Even the owner came by the table, dressed in a pristine tux, and thanked us for our business."

  • "3 people in my group had the 8oz filet, all different temps, and they all came out cooked perfectly and were probably the best steaks we've ever had. The service was very good and the dining room was nice and quiet for a Friday night. We would definitely go back again for a special occasion or nice night out."

  • "Had a business lunch there. We were placed in the back dining room which was very nice. Perfect ambiance. We would have left if that option were not available. Normal lunch seating area is way too loud and not comfortable at all."

  • "Amazing selection of gluten free items and the best chicken around. Wine is overpriced (10$ a glass for wine that I just got for 13$ a bottle). Service was once again veeeery slow."

  • "Dinner in the gallery was special. It was quiet, dark, candle it with dark wood and red walls. Food was outstanding. Service was first rate."

  • "Really have to recommend the Ossobucco...it was fabulous! The PEI mussels were really good and would highly recommend these. The wait staff is thorough and does not interrupt the dining experience. The wine selection is reasonably priced and the recommendation by the server was just right for our entrees. Also enjoyed a quick visit to the kitchen and watching the preparation on the screen...foodies will LOVE it!"

  • "This was our first visit to 202 Market. We found the atmosphere quite and inviting. The food was excellent, proper sized portions, unique tastes, great presentation. The prices were what we expected but reasonable for what we received. The wait staff were very attentive. An excellent find for special occasion dinners."

  • "Went on a quiet Tuesday evening and it was fantastic. We had some questions about the menu and everyone was very friendly and even the owner came over to chime in. Each part of the meal was delightful. We were already talking about going back and then they brought us out a complimentary bowl of cotton candy. Now we are definitely going back."

  • "First time for dinner. Food was delicious and good portions. Dining area a little dark. Service a little slow since only a total of 5 tables of 4 or less people were dining. We were too full for dessert but surprised the offer to order was not presented to us."

  • "The restaurant is in a separate room, behind the stage and bar. Well appointed, warm atmosphere, inviting. The background music contributed nicely. Fairly quiet; easy to converse with others at your table. Broad menu. Our large group selected a variety of meals, and each was excellent. Full bar; extensive wines. Great desserts. I would highly recommend and will return soon."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful experience on Halloween evening and highly recommend 202 for it's fine food and superior service. The Osso Bucco was the best I have had anywhere in America. My wife's salmom was delicious and cooked perfectly. Our server Chris did a nice job of making us feel welcome and was attentive to our needs. He went the extra mile to ensure we had a memorable experience. Try this place; you'll love it!"

  • "Very good meal utilizing their new italian menu. Reasonably priced, good atmosphere form a date. Quality drinks from the bar. Loved the "cotton candy" as a fast free dessert"

  • "The food and atmosphere were both exceptional. We chose this venue to celebrate my husband's birthday and were not disappointed. I chose the Red Snapper special and it was delicious. My husband ordered the ribeye and it was perfectly cooked. The dining area was intimate and romantic and the staff were attentive. I would highly recommend!"

  • "This place turned out to be more of a bar with food than a great restaurant. Food was fine but did not appreciate the lively bar scene. The jazz duo that was performing were fine but their set-up time was painful. It seemed like 100 sound checks with numerous movement of amps and speakers. Not very good atmosphere for a good meal."

  • "We were on vacation and knew nothing about Roanoke, and found 202 Market through Open Table. We were hoping for something good and got something great. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the wine list and steered me to the short ribs, which were to die for. The owner was there acting as host, and we enjoyed chatting with him. We were with another couple, and everyone felt we had won the lottery with this find."

  • "Food is expensive, but very worth it. Amazing wine list"

  • "Food and wine was absolutely wonderful. The service was great, and the jazz pianist added a nice touch. The only draw back to the whole evening was the static coming from the speaker for the piano. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet romantic dinner."

  • "Ok for Roanake VA, but not up to Northern VA standards Brunch is above average but not great and the eggs Benedict was very good and only $10"

  • "Upscale restaurant with a romantic ambiance. Jazz pianist was definitely worth listening to... Found the menu to be a bit limited, though I would prefer less to select from, and have them done well, than too much on the menu that is done mediocre. Our dishes were done extremely well, and the presentation on the plate was appetizing! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone considering a great place to entertain out-of-town guests, a romantic dinner, or a nice place to spend an evening sharing a bottle of wine with good friends!"

  • "This was only the second time I'd been to 202 Market, as I don't eat out much, but the food and the service were excellent. Certainly among the best meals I've had dining out in Roanoke."

  • "Place was excellent. New to the Roanoke area and was trying to find a restaurant that not only had great food, but also music, and a romantic setting. 202 Market delivered on all three, plus if you wanted to stay and step it up a bit with the bar scene they have that as well! I would definitely go back. Price was high, but the taste of the food matched the $ sign. I had the Scottish salmon and had them sub mashed potatoes inside of the purée califlower. The mussels needed more seasoning. But all and all, excellent."
