Each of the three courses we tried in their prix fixe menu displayed the talents of a mature and skilled chef. Flavors were layered, with each dish complex, subtle, and beautifully integrated. Service suited the customer and was appropriately attentive. This was our third visit to Station 1, and the food has gotten better each time. Had the chilled beet soup & the sweetbreads as starters, both having the black cod as the main course and one of us had the cheese dessert, the other the oatmeal cake--Service impressive.
Since this was the first day of a warm spell, the room was quite warm so ceiling fans could have helped. Also a note that obviously cannot be avoided but on this night, there was a large noisy table in the center of the room. I'm all for being festive but 2 of the diners were over-the-top, going in and out of the restaurant on their phone and then returning to the table with loud voices. I know this is difficult to control as an owner but I wouldn't recommend this place for a group.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding!I had been to John Bentley's, formerly at this same location, many times but this was my first experience at Station 1. I'm happy to say it exceeded all my expectations. From the chilled beet soup to the Artisan blue cheese cheese dessert, the meal was delicious. The waitstaff is extremely knowledgeable without pretense and the hostess was just lovely. Station 1 is the perfect, rustic spot for a romantic dinner for 2 or a larger group of people who want a smaller, intimate setting than some of the bigger restaurants nearby. We were truly impressed and can't wait to go back!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMStation 1 is a culinary paradiseThis is a small restaurant in Woodside, and I cannot say enough good things about it. The service is exquisite, and there is attention (even on a Thursday night) by the owner. The menu changes and is limited to a few, delicious items. Each item has intent, and the various flavors hit your palate at different times making for a a full experience with every forkful. Since the menu does change, there's no point in describing what I ate, however... holy cow, I had the best dessert of my life. it was an oat cake with a buttermilk-lemon sorbet, various berries and other things I can't fully describe. It is a creative mix of old world and new, with modern California cuisine that is artistically presented. The pre-fix menu is very approachable for most people, and offers 4 options per each of the 3 courses, including a vegetarian option, a more "common" option such as salmon or chicken, and a daring option like sweet breads, which are not for everyone. The dessert also has a cheese option for those who don't like sweets. All of their food is local organic, free range and seasonal. They also serve an amuse bouches in-between each course, and homemade rolls. The flavors were distinct, complementary layers that enhanced the primary protein, from short ribs to salmon. Two of us had the wine pairings, which are generously poured and further complemented the food pairing. Our entree had indian spices and the concept of it would have been great if it wasn't that it did not excel and the flavors did not come together. Our other entree was a short-rib: that one was very good and almost made up for the mediocre indian chicken.
Also, we apparently chose the worst wine they had in the list. It was highly priced but lacked in flavor, had a flat taste and was acidic. We thought it was properly preserved, it was just a bad red wine that shouldn't have been on the list.
Desserts were just ok. The food was comparable to some of the better bay area restaurants (Flea Street, Chez Panisse). I also like a simple menu (something also common to the better restaurants). And the Albarino was some of the best I've had. The staff was warm, friendly and well orchestrated. The food was delicious and beautiful.
