Diner Reviews
  • "Impeccable service. The white coated crew at Stars are some of the finest we've ever encountered. The food was outstsnding. We've eaten at over 30 of Charleston's restaurants, including all the well publicized ones and Stars is right there with the top shelf places. And the rooftop offers great views of upper King Street and Charleston, has great security and is a perfect chill spot for after dinner."

  • "We loved the rooftop but thought we could get brunch upstairs. Didn't happen. However, the food was amazing and we left stuffed!"

  • "Limited menu, but everything done well. The service is very professional, yet friendly. Pricing is a little high for serving portion, but quality is very high."

  • "We booked this place for the rooftop bar, so we were expecting good food but nothing crazy. My friend and I split the ribs and they were so good! The Rooftop bar is cool but since it's a college town, it's overrun very early in the evening. The food was very good, and I would definitely visit again."

  • "I selected Stars because of an online review of 'top Rooftop' restaurants. However, we elected to not get a beverage and lounge on the rooftop due to the excessively hot/sunny day and not enough 'cooling' on the roof, and really not a great view either. Note that the rooftop is a bar area only, not dinner service. We were very pleasantly surprised by the excellent dinner and service we experienced in the main floor dining area. Although the dinners are a bit pricey, they are all excellent. One of our diners requires gluten free options, and although Stars does not have a specifically gluten free menu, the waitress and chef were able to offer several meals, sides and desserts that were gluten free and delicious."

  • "Awesome drinks and rooftop bar with great food. I met a group of friends for drinks and dinner at Stars this weekend and found my new favorite Charleston cocktail "Weekend at Bernie's." It was probably the best part of my meal, even though the mussels were really good (though maybe a little over cooked). It was made with honeysuckle vodka, grape fruit and "bison grass", which I was told as a mix the bar tenders whip up. Everyone really enjoyed their food wine and cocktails. We also spent some time on the rooftop which is such a fun bar scene with a great view. I will definitely be coming back."

  • "Had drinks on the rooftop prior to our dinner reservations. Service, atmoshpere, food and drinks were delicious. Would recommend to anyone and everyone. Will go back on my next trip to Charleston!"

  • "The Food at Stars is exceptional. The atmosphere is a bit cold and loud. You almost don't expect the food to be as good as it is due to the interior feel. We were seated by the hostess desk and that was not pleasant. Overall we had a great meal."

  • "Kevin our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and where the food was sourced from.! We loved it and will be back soon."

  • "Great food, but a bit overpriced for what you get. Most entrees are $30 and up and portions were super small. We had a great bottle of wine, and the rooftop is spectacular, but probably won't pay $30 for 3 scallops again!"

  • "We returned because of previous excellent service and meals - this visit will keep us from ever returning! Rude server. Extremely slow service. Food lukewarm. NO ONE thanked us for dining there or even made eye contact with us as we were leaving!!! We have dined all over the Charleston area and suggest you try another one of the excellent restaurants. Our guests are still talking about how appalled they were with our evening at Stars!"

  • "I made the reservation through Open Table and we arrived early in time to enjoy the roof top bar! What a gem for Charleston! Despite that....it was GREAT and we'll go back!!"

  • "Downstairs dining area is a little upscale without the feel of needing to be dressed up. Food was tasty and the roof top bar is a perfect spot before or after dinner. Great location too"

  • "Great food and very accomodating to food allergies and kids."

  • "The main draw is the rooftop bar. Excellent drinks. However the view isn't all that great as you're overlooking run down houses and garbage cans. Food was of average quality with a somewhat limited menu. Extensive wine list and VERY pricey."

  • "I brought the family here as a father's day treat during their brunch hour and we had a wonderful experience. The staff was very pleasant and though we arrived an hour early for our reservations they were able to accomodate us. The rooftop bar is very relaxing. We enjoyed every detail and have shared my experience with many friends and family. I plan to return again as I see this as an enjoyable place to relax and get away from everyday stressors."

  • "This has become my favorite brunch spot in Charleston. The food is fabulous and the buffet lines remain manageable throughout the morning. The standouts are the shrimp and grits, biscuits smothered in lemon curd and the pecan encrusted French toast. My only complaint is they changed their chocolate chip recipe...they used to come to the dessert table warm and gooey and amazing and this time they were cold and hard as rocks. Those cookies were the highlight of our brunch so we were all extremely disappointed! Other than that the food is excellent!"

  • "Service was great and the food was fine. I'd suggest you ignore the negative reviews as [frankly] those posts simply read like its the local competition trying to persuade you to skip Stars."

  • "We were in town for the weekend & a friend recommended this restaurant. Bar on the rooftop is great - great service, fun atmosphere, good drinks! We went inside & downstairs for dinner & unfortunately the service was horrible. Our server was nowhere to be found after taking our order (which he described to me differently than what actually came out). I had to flag another server down to get another drink. Our food was brought out by someone else & our server never checked back on us so we finally had to ask someone to get him in order to get our bill. The food overall was great - I would definitely recommend the kale salad & the salmon was also very good. I think if we had another server my opinion would be quite different."

  • "Another great meal at Stars. We were very impressed with the level of customer service exhibited by the staff to make sure our meal and dining experience was great. They really show that they care about the customer at Stars. "

  • "A real waste of money considering all of the other wonderful dining choices in Charleston. Even the rooftop bar was a big disappointment. We won't go back"

  • "Outstanding dishes across the board, but wait staff seemed overwhelmed. Water not replenished regularly, waiter unfamiliar with the wine offered, and cold coffee served."

  • "Great drink menu with a happening, busy & loud scene in the dining area. We had a table out of the thick of it so that helped and as the night progressed more than a few bachelorette and bachelor parties arrived to head to the roof. Food was good, not awesome. Our party we had the spit roasted chicken which was good, diver scallops which were over salted and was pretty inedible, the sliced steak which was perfectly cooked, just was delivered cool. Server Corey was attentive and very friendly & knowledgeable. Went up to the rootop after dinner and it was buzzing & crowded with 30 somethings having a great time. "

  • "I would go here for drinks rather than dinner. The rooftop bar is a great scene with views if the city. Bartenders were rude and lacked any southern charm. Our dinner was good, but not excellent service. "

  • "Server ignored us for over 30 minutes. Had to speak with manager and another 10 before his service. Manager was very helpful but server was not."

  • "I've been to Stars several times and have to say I was a bit disappointed this time around. All the servers were extremely attentive and nice, but I for the price, I wasn't that impressed with the entree. The kale salad was (and always is) exceptional. In addition, the restaurant was so loud that the six of us at our table couldn't even hear each other without yelling. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for an intimate dinner. "

  • "We had reservations but our table wasn't quite ready when we arrived so we went to the bar to have a drink. The bar staff was supper nice and the bar selection was great. How can you not love wine on tap?!? Once we were seated for dinner, our service was awesome and the food was equally as wonderful! No complaints and would highly recommend this place. Be sure to check out the rooftop bar when you go!"

  • "We had a great meal with superior service and attention on busy weekend. We ordered the entire appetizer menu, some entrees to share and dessert. We loved everything. There was one item that seemed not right and not only was the server polite about taking it back but the manager came over to discuss and it was taken off our bill- which we did not even ask for as we had eaten the sides off the entree....we were very grateful. Desserts were amazing (as was the rum punch). "

  • "My cousin from California visited me in charleston recently. He's a foodie, so I got him set up for dinner at Stars. The bartender and manager got him a really cool cocktail and he said he really loved the octopus starter. Finished up with the rotisserie chicken. The kefir yogurt sauce was to die for!"

  • "Everything about this restaurant was fantastic. Interesting and well-prepared food, but enough on the menu to appeal to a variety of tastes if there are no foodies in your group. Meals out group enjoyed: lobster and grits, baby back ribs, 16 oz ribeye, crab soup and bacon tater tots, and that evening's special pork chop. The best desserts were the mud pudding and butterscotch crepe brûlée. Service was attentive and friendly without ever rushing us. The inside of the restaurant is lovely yet relaxed. We will most definitely go back!"

  • "The downside of our dining experience was the poor wine selections. "

  • "It was Saturday night of "graduation weekend" and hard to even find a table anywhere downtown at a reasonable hour. Stars was able to accommodate our group of 3, and we had an interesting table near the entrance: great for people-watching, but the noise level approached deafening at times. The food was very very good, the service a bit uneven, but understandable as they were slammed. I actually enjoyed an after-dinner stroll around the rooftop bar more, as it was a perfect late Spring evening - cool and dry, with a very lively friendly ambiance too. They apparently grow most of the culinary herbs for the restaurant in planters surrounding the upper deck. Plan a before-dinner aperitif or after dinner drink there if the weather is suitable."

  • "We are locals to Charleston and this restaurant is the happening scene on upper King so we had to try it for dinner. We made reservations and were seated 8" from the couples having dinner to the left and right of us at a very small table and at times we couldn't hear each other speaking (we're in our 30's). We had to move the tables to let the bench seat folks out when leaving. The drinks are $10+ for cocktails and the food is good. By no means is this a bad meal in Charleston. However, for the $100+ price tag for 2 folks who ordered the special ($36 pork chop) and the other being Risotto with Duck - I feel that is excessive considering the other options locally in downtown Charleston. "

  • "Service was not great. The food was just ok. Pricey, and all in all, just not that special. I was told it was "the place to go". I think they meant the bar and not the restaurant. The roof top bar was hopping...."

  • "Food was good but a little pricey. Our waiter was very good. Hamburger and crab cake were tasted. Ribs were charcoal outside, not enough sauce but was still."

  • "This was a pretty good dining experience. Food was good, service was great. I would probably recommend this spot as a great happy hour location but perhaps not for a romantic date night. A solid 4 stars. No pun intended. "
