Stark's Steakhouse brings classic fare with a modern approach to downtown Santa Rosa's Old Railroad Square. The restaurant's decor blends classic charm and vintage detail with lush fabrics, weathered leather, and two fireplaces in an old brick setting.

Stark's Steakhouse features CAB Certified Prime Angus, grass fed and beef and also features the only in-house dry-aging program in Sonoma County. Cuts of meat include Bone in New York Strip, Rib Eye, American Kobe and Filet Mignon. Keeping with owner/executive chef Mark Stark's "farm to table" philosophy, Stark's Steakhouse also offers a wide selection of "non-steak" dishes that highlight the plethora of fresh, seasonal and local ingredients available in Sonoma County.   • "While we have dined here before, we were truly disappointed with this experience and will probably not return. There was a very loud table sitting close to us...and the volume was extreme. We didn't complain to the waitstaff, but wished someone associated with the restaurant would have attempted an intervention. The waitstaff were attentive, but running constantly...so not a lot of 'personal' attention. I should have sensed this restaurant has turned into a 'fill as many seats and turn'em over as fast as possible' vibe after receiving two confirmation calls confirming our reservation and after arriving spot on at our reservation time, finding the hostess calling my house to see where we were..:( So much for a romantic birthday dinner."

  • "Steaks are delicious as is seafood. Sides are enough for 2 or 3 to share. We take out of town guests from New York, LA and Chicago and they are impressed. We go there for special occasions. You can't loose. Make reservations early. The are always busy."

  • "When I go out to eat, I put ambience at the top. This place has been a favorite because of the "mood" it sets, and the fact you don't have to yell over others in the restaurant. The food is exceptional. Service was good, but not friendly. When we walked in, the two women at the front desk continued their conversation, no eye-contact, no greeting. Our table servers, the same. Guess I felt treated like it was their "scripted" job. Not a huge point, but one worth mentioning."

  • "Sorry, I can't recommend Stark's. We got the first table by the door/kitchen so we had to speak over the sound of dishes and silverware (we had reservations). We ordered: Mussels a la Plancha: Over cooked, tasted old and were very small. Crispy Calamari, Orange-Chili Gremolata: Not crispy due to being drowned in the sauce that killed any calamari taste. Tuscan Kale Salad: Good, but tasted like a lemon squeezed on the salad. So tart and bitter we ate it with the Calamari to moderate the tang and cut the orange sauce. Queen Cut Prime Rib of Beef: Asked for it medium but got it so rare that I left the center portion. Jumbo Onion Rings: Some of the best I ever had! Best part of the meal, but isn't that stupid for $90 out the door?"

My fish dinner was swimming in oil (butter?) but the sides were great. We'll likely return but order with reservation and care."

  • "Came to Starks to celebrate our 6th year wedding anniversary. Loved the diverse atmosphere from the bar to the dining room. Had drinks in the Bar before our dinner. When we were seated for dinner we were surprised with two glasses of champagne in honor of our anniversary. Waitress and other staff were kind and friendly. Food was delicious, left me wanting to plan our next meal."

  • "My husband and I visited the area from out of town. Upon arrival we were greated by a hostess who acted as though we were an annoyance - hmmm. Didn't get that warm and fuzzy feeling right up front and that continued through out the evening We were seated in the back dinning room. The chairs were bucket style leather seats that sat low to the ground. I felt as though I needed a booster seat to reach the table (I am 5'5") but I managed uncomfortably through out dinner. The waitress took some time to approach us. We ordered wine and an appetizer which arrived fairly quickly. Both were very good. Our water was refilled often. The food took some time to receive and overall both my husband's and my meals were just okay."

  • "We had never tried Starks before. We heard it was good, but based on the location were not eager to try. However once inside we were happily surprised, and our first experience was positive. The service was outstanding, as was the food. It was a bit loud to be considered quietly romantic, but still had a pleasant ambience. I would recommend this restaurant to those who want excellent food and service, but is not too concerned with the surrounding area. Going after dark is highly recommended."

  • "I have heard raves about Starks. I love their happy hour. So, restuarant week provided the opportunity to try a meal there. The mushroom soup was fabulous as was the cream brule and dark chocolate mousse creation. The rib eye steak poor to adequate. We were so disapointed! Starks is known for their steaks - you pay a lot for them because they are supposedly worth it. I'm sure the meat itself, in it's raw form, was fine. However, they seared it in old grease on a flat griddle. Every bite of meat had the flavor of old grease.. Next time I'll get the soup and dessert and do my meat at home.."

  • "We emailed the manager and he gave us a gift card to come back and visit again. The second trip we made was very much like the first, Disaster! They did not have my drink; they were out of the alcohol or the mixers on a Tuesday!? My Wife’s dinner tasted so bad she could not even finish after 3 bites. My steak was way over cooked and had an awful sear. I got the bacon wrap this time. Did you know bacon wrapped actually means one piece of bacon wrapped around the center of the steak, not around the edge of the steak? We ordered garlic fries that had no garlic when delivered the first time, barely any the 2nd time. Spoke to supervisor and manager who removed my Wife’s meal and the garlic fries from the bill. Never coming back."

  • "I cannot remember our waitresses name; we sat next to the fireplace in the corner that was no lit. We did not see our waitress until 20 minutes after we sat down. The couple that was seated next us, who arrived 10 minutes later, had their order taken first. The Manhattan that I ordered seemed to taste bland and stale. We did not get our silverware until 5 minutes after the oysters came. I ordered a bacon wrapped USDA prime rib-eye steak with Cajun style spices. The beef did not taste well and it was overcooked, closer to medium well than medium rare. The bigger issue with my steak was that it was missing the bacon wrap completely! My wife’s sandwich and dip was also way over cooked."

  • "The Caesar Salad and Soup were very good. The Dutcher Crossing Wine was excellent. But the Rib Eye steak was over cooked and had to be returned, requiring me to wait 10 minutes while my husband ate his steak. For $150.00 for two we were disappointed in both our steaks. The rib eyes were 1/2 inch or less in thickness and poorly cooked for medium rare. The waitress agreed."

  • "We went on a Saturday night with a reservation and told them we were here, we then proceeded to the bar for a cocktail That was difficult to get, the Bartender was busy talking to a customer, unable to multitask. Never,said I will be be right with you. So we finally got a cocktail and now it's 20 minutes after our reservation which was 5:45 their only one, so not so bad for the wait. My husband then goes to check on the reservation and comes back and says they're ready. So we go to the front desk as the hostess is talking to a manager. Ignoring us and after 5 mins grabs our menus and takes us."

  • "I guess dining the Friday of Sonoma County restauarant week was not the best choice. The place was packed. It was overall a disappointing experience - the Cosmopolitan was mostly lemon juice. We chose the Prix Fixe $39.00 3 course meal. Salad was OK. Then....a 45 minute wait between finishing the salad and main course???? Really? Then we sawed into our Rib Eyes - they need to invest in better steak knives - anticipating tough chewy steaks, they were actually quite nice. The side salts and the mustard bearnaise were also a nice touch. The baked potato, however, was probably the most lackluster one I've ever had. Dessert was good. Oh well."

  • "We usually go to Stark's for their outstanding, can't be beat, Happy Hour. This time we went as part of Sonoma County Restaurant Week. The place was hopping' but they didn't miss a beat - everything was excellent. Bonus- corkage is free on your first 2 bottles of wine. If you want a steak - they know who to do them. Love the ambiance of an old time steakhouse, with a modern edge. Was a bit loud, but you could still carry on a conversation. Can't wait to return. Starks restaurants never fail to impress - the food is delicious, service fantastic and each one is unique! They are doing it right!"

  • "It was Restaurant Week so a little crowded. We ordered off the $39 prefixed menu which was ok. Both of us had the sirloin steak which was done to our request but was a pretty thin cut with quite a bit gristle. I guess we expected a bit more even though a $39 meal at Starks is more affordable than ordering off the the regular menu."

That always brings me back! We ordered prefix meal, I had salmon. Very good although I really don't want everything floating in butter, even if it does taste good! Look forward to returning."

  • "Four of us ordered the steak that was promoted for Sonoma Restaurant week. I had the best Caesar salad ever as the first course. The bread was delicious and so was the crab appetizer. The baked potato was perfect since I happen to love the skins. I wish I could say the same for the steak. Three of the four of us couldn't finish the meat because there was so much fat and gristle. Too bad because what was actually meat was really very good. We also added pepper sauce. I asked someone what she thought the sauce tasted like and she said "wet". Perfect, no peppercorns, just some broth. We left feeling like they cleaned out their freezer and served the rejects for this promotion. Too bad since everything else was terrific."

  • "The food was excellent, and so was the overall ambience. The rude service, however, isn't worth the $200 spent on our dinner for two. It started with a rude hostess that clearly had better things to do with her time than greet/seat us with courtesy, not to mention our request made on Open Table for a booth wasn't honored. We passed by three empty booths on our way to the cramped table she chose for us. When we had the audacity to ask for a booth, she told us that there were none available. Apparently, we're blind. During dinner, my friend used the ladies room, and a staff member started banging on the door, shouting at her to get out of the bathroom because it was "out of order." Hello? Put a sign on the bathroom if it's out of order!!!"

  • "We have been to Stark's many times before. This was our worst dining experience. Our server was not attentive and slow. He talked over us when trying to order. He rarely made eye contact and would walk away before we could speak. We sat between visits 15-20 minutes at time. He made several errors in our order, forgot food, didn't pay attention to our requests for on the side and served us food containing allergens to our family. My filet was a rib eye. It was grossly fatty and when I opened the take home box (for my dog) the word "ribeye" was written on it. I was charged for filet. The quality of the food has gone down, as has the service. We will not go back."
