Located in Seattle’s thriving Ballard neighborhood, Staple & Fancy Mercantile is the latest venture of celebrated chef Ethan Stowell. Housed in a beautifully renovated early 1900’s building, this intimate restaurant showcases Ethan’s simple Italian inspired cooking style. The popular “Chefs Choice” menu offers guests a one-of-a-kind dining experience with dishes created from uniquely sourced products, local seasonal ingredients, and house-made pastas. An a la carte menu is also available. The small bar is perfect for snacking and offers a tasteful selection of aperitifs and cocktails. None of us had any food allergies or aversions, but I got the impression they would happily accommodate anything we needed. The food we got was delicious and varied, and there was plenty of it, which made for a very fun, interesting, and wonderful meal. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We have been trying to experience some new restaurants outside of our box of comfort and had heard of Ethan's restaurants around town. This place provides a hip ambience, nice casual dress (not stuffy at all), and yet feel like an upscale place-of-choice for a special occasion. The format of his 'approach' makes it very casual and almost demands all those in your party to participate family-style. We have yet to try the 'fixed menu' option - maybe for next time. Highly recommend."

  • "We loved S&F! We had an early dining time as we had a play to attend. Our waiter was very helpful with the menu since we had many questions and it was our first time at S&F. We decided to share a baby beet salad with anchovies, arugula, avocado, and toasted farro, followed by pasta, and then wood fired branzino. Our waiter suggested bringing each dish out separately to enhance out dining experience. He also suggested wines and brought us each a taste so we could decide. Since it was a whole fish, I asked to have the head removed, which they don't normally do. They not only removed it, but removed the bones as well. Everything was excellent - food, service, and atmosphere. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I planned a family celebration for four at Staple and Fancy after hearing good things from friends. We ordered the tasting menu and enjoyed the variety and good quality of the dishes, although none of them had us craving more. Sadly, we really did not enjoy the occasion because of sound level in the restaurant. The open kitchen makes it noisy by nature, but very loud and jarring music really prevented us from having a conversation. I would love to give the food another try, but I found it too difficult to enjoy my companions."

  • "I'm a big fan of Ethan Stowell but lately have been shunning meat, which this restaurant has lots of. I got the potato gnocchi with abalone, which was really good and reasonable (under $20). But it makes me sad to see veal on any menu. I also don't eat rabbit and now I'm not eating steak (all three were offered as well as pork). There was also lamb bolognese. The menu changes every day so I would need to see the menu before going again. But service was awesome!"

  • "We were recommended Staple & Fancy to eat as well as the tasting menu. The menu had some great options that I was going to order but once I asked our waiter how the tasting menu worked we were swayed to do. Also I should note they accomodated my husband's no fish rule but I also had some allergies. We had 7 appetizers/salads that were awesome one after the other. The portions were great sizes that you got a sampling but not too full. There was some down time between the appetizers then a pasta dish, an entree and dessert. There was a bit too much time in between the pasta and entree (pork chuck) but could of been to help our stomachs to settle. Highly recommend this place to eat and would come back again when I come back into town."

  • "My husband and I went here for V-Day dinner. This was our first Ethan Stowell experience and it did not disappoint. We tried the Tasting Menu. You begin with 7 appetizer plates, second course is pasta, third salad, fourth meat, and fifth desert. All course were delicious. Our favorite course was the appetizer course because it provided diverse plates. More than anything, it was fun. Our least favorite was the desert: ricotta cheesecake over honey with cumquats on top. Not a fan of cumquats. The service was okay. Our waiter seemed as if he didn't want to be there. I had to ask for another glass of wine rather than the waiter noticing and asking. While our waiter wasn't the best, the other staff was very helpful and nice. Also, bar was quick."

  • "We "Did it Fancy." Overall, it was a very delightful evening. The food was wonderful and we loved how we were given fresh pasta to take home at the end of our meal! I just wish they timed the bringing out the food better. I know it was meant be to course after course, bite after bite. But they were literally bringing out the appetizers too fast that at one point our table was completely covered with plates of food as they brought out more, and I felt like I had to eat super fast (and not savor the taste)."

Combinations and mixtures were a little off sometimes, eg the beet salad with crunchy farro----very good quality ingredients, but creativity was trumped by the mixing of baby lettuce, crunchy hard farro and perfectly done baby beets. The brussel sprouts were tasty, but reminded me more of comfort food with too much fried cheese and oil and ?breadcrumbs that doused the brussel sprouts as if to please the palate of those who are minimally fond of brussel sprouts. Likewise for the added bread crumbs to the crab tagliatelle. Scallops were reportedly excellent and tasty. Nice recommendations on drinks from the waiter. Overall very good, but for a discerning palate, falls a little short of memorable."

  • "We chose to let the kitchen set the menu, and most all of it was good. The appetizers were abundant and kept coming fast and furious. There were probably too many, because we were full after the appetizers and salad. Then we were served a gnocchi and clam dish which we didn't care for at all, but it didn't matter because we needed a break from eating. The ribs that followed were amazing, and easily the highlight of the whole meal. The cheesecake was delicious, but we needed to run around the block just to fit it in. Great staff and overall good experience, but a risk that you may get something you would never order anywhere - like clams and gnocchi."

  • "For a special occasion my niece suggested Staples and Fancy. Having heard the accolades given to Ethan Stowell, I was most excited to experience this restaurant. Loved the entire experience. This was in December. Well, another celebration was coming up and I took a family member last week to celebrate her birthday. She is a foodie plus she is in the spirits and wine industry. She is hooked!!! Just like me...a beautiful evening. Attention to detail,great service and nummy food. What more can one ask for....Stapes and Fancy has a certain feel that is so easy,comfortable yet out of the box. Bringing another friend and family next month. I guess that says it all....."

Personally I'm in love with the building- just confirmed it more that we dream of going back soon. We got the "special menu" and thought we were ready for the whole experience. I had looked online ahead of time and knew before we went that what we would get. You think that you have prepared your self for the experience but are quickly BLOWN AWAY just in the first part of a four part meal. Just when you think your done they bring you more. More just amazing food...that you want to keep eating, but your sharing with someone else, and you know more is coming, NOT to mention dessert! Overall it was a great experience, environment, and staff."
