  • "Our spot for special occasion dinners didn't disappoint. The Wagyu steak finished tableside on a hot salt brick was perfectly prepared and presented. Wine choices are excellent and not having to ask to "beg" for a cheese plate to cap off dinner made for a happy ending. Service had been a little uneven a couple of years ago but that seems to have been addressed as our wait staff were all attentive and professional without being overbearing. It's nice not to have to "work" at getting what you want when dining out. Stays at the top of our list."

  • "We went to Stage Left b/c it was ranked #3 in NJ and we really wanted to have a good burger! We were pleasently surprised by the service the staff - from the host to busers to the manager/owner asking us how our meal was, everything was very delightful. My only critisim was the time it took to bring out our drinks - I order a glass of wine and my boyfriend ordered a jack and coke. Our appetitizers came out before our drinks but at least we had our waters and the bread was incredibly warm. We really enjoyed our burgers - it had a lot of flavor, simply delicious!"

  • "We took a couple who we go out with often to introduce them to the greatest hamburger! We eat at SL always before going to the State Theater and usually have steak of other great entrée. We all had the hamburger and of course all gave it great reviews!. We will all be back and next time something else on the menu. Potatoes au gratin also went well the hamburger!! Change of pace from fabulous fries."

  • "Our party of 6 chose Stage Left for its proximity to the State Theater where we had tickets. Food was good to excellent but two hours was barely enough. We paid the bill and hustled out and could have used the Half hour it took to get our round of drinks. The steak off the day, which you finish cooking on a salt block at your plate was excellent as was the 48 oz porterhouse. I am a prosciutto fan and the Spanish equivalent ham, I , was exquisite. The round of varied deserts including the gelato and sorbet sampler, chocolate lava cake, and apple strudel made us wish we had more time.Overall excellent marks for food and ambiance, very friendly and attentive service but it could have been a bit quicker at the start to win perfect grades."

  • "Upon entry we were instantly greeted nicely and seated in the somewhat chilly wine storage dining area. The room doesn't get warm, so it's a great place to sit in the summer time for certain. The service is intentionally slower and that was nice as we wanted to be there for a few hours before our show. The drinks were perfect, the waiters and other staff were of the utmost class and professionalism. This is definitely a place to celebrate an occasion as they even make a menu specific to the occasion by having a name or celebration listed on the menu litterally. Happy Birthday Brooke is said for us. Meanwhile, the specialty items on the menu are worth the trip and the delivery of several steak choices on a salt brick is totally unique."

  • "My husband and I had a 10pm dinner reservation at stage Left. We were seated within 2 mons of arriving. I had requesed a table near the fireplace and they accomodated. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. He made a few recommendations as well. The steaks were delicious and the atmosphere elegant. A very enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend and return...just be aware the prices are high, but we expected that."

  • "We have had many good meals at Stage Left on very memorable occasions. This has set a high standard that they did not live up to on this occasion. The service was rushed and unfocused. The produce especially the steak was a real disappointment. When one pays top shelf prices, you need top shelf everything and this was at the level of 'OK' and as such poor value for a $300 bill for a dinner for 2"

  • "Enjoyed the food, but will never go back. 15 mins after being seated, we were finally given menus & water. Our drink orders were taken 10 mins later, but received them after we ordered food, which was 1hr after being seated. We cringed when our waiter asked if we were ready to order. It had been 1hr since we sat, of course we were ready. When drinks came, a waitress leaned over me to pour my sister's red wine rather than take the glass from the table. We ordered a 4-cheese plate; it was tiny & mostly rinds. When we saw a table order the same & receive a large plate, & saw a man take 1 bite that was as large as our entire plate, we were livid. Staff mostly ignored & treated us as if we didn't belong there. We got the msg & won't return."

  • "The dining space is very attractive and calming, the cocktail offerings superb and the service while sometimes inexperienced, was pleasant and welcoming. However, the food was a shock, and completely out of place. The steak was inedibly overcooked. A lobster and crab mac and cheese side dish was simply penne noodles with butter, an egregious misstatement. A fish entree came out in the sum total of two bites, in no way acceptable unless this were a multicourse tasting, which it was not. Finally, entrees were presented atop salt blocks atop cutting boards, and placed on the table! A disaster waiting to happen. Avoid."

  • "Upon arrival we wanted to have a drink at the bar before being seated but were told we should go directly to our table and have a cocktail there. We were offered seating 10 inches from our neighbor on either side, even though we were the only customers in the restaurant and there were many open tables. The staff was very pushy. After we ordered a glass of wine at the table, the server came back three times to collect up our order and the wine had not even arrived. We were rushed through dinner by the server and the buss boy practically stole my wife's plate from her on at least three occasions while she was still eating. Overall the food was good but the dining experience was bad. Does not live up to the price range it wants to command."

  • "Found this place on Google as I am not from the area, and needed to find a place for a business meeting. This was a huge surprise because the menu and specials were very different, perfect for the meeting we were having. The Wagyu served on a salt block not only was unique, but provided the ability to heat each slice of wagyu to your own liking, and providing additional flavor or not only salt, but other minerals. The service was outstanding as well. I thought the meal was very reasonably priced given the caliber of food and service. I drove 30 minutes from Newark Airport and it was absolutely worth it."

  • "When an important client was staying in New Brunswick, I and one of my colleagues took the opportunity to dine with the client at Stage Left. Maybe, it was a Monday night issue but the overall experience was only average, expensive, but average, with the food being the biggest disappointment. The wait staff was friendly and energetic, but the person taking our order told the client that the sauce was not that hot and, at the client's request, agreed to put the sauce on the side. The dish arrived with the steak drowning in the extremely spicy hot sauce. The client was too polite to send it back although it was mostly inedible for her. Overall, we all agreed that the food was average at best."

  • "This was our second time at Stage Left and I was very disappointed. We were the only ones dining there on a Tuesday night celebrating 2 birthdays. We were put in a room which was rather boring and of course empty except for the 4 of us. Our waitress was curt and unfriendly putting a further dampener on the evening. The food was good and plentiful but rich and expensive."

  • "Made reservations week in advance seated by the entry door so we had an outdoor dining experience. We chose the tasting menu for two with four courses and wine pairings (only 3) for the advertised price of $249. The portions were small even by french standards. The surf and turf entree was a small flank steak served on a hot ceramic brick served rare. The lobster tail was 3-4 oz cooked, so a couple of bites is all that you had of the surf. The dessert was the highlight of the evening, Our final bill was $350 for three hours of dining pleasure. Only a good from us as this restaurant has performed better in our past experience. Oh did I mention that the wine portions were a bit on the light side for $90 for 6 glasses of wine!"

  • "The food was fantastic! My wife and I both had the Stage Left Burgers and they were the absolute best burgers we have ever had. The atmosphere was great and our server (Eric) was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He was also very friendly and professional. We had such a good experience, that we will be coming back next week for my wife's birthday dinner. I will absolutely be recommeding Stage Left to friends and family!"

  • "Menus should have indication of spiciness or the waiter should tell their customers if the item has spiciness to it. I had ordered a NY strip steak & I didn't realize the sauce was "hot"spicy considering it was a steak & I had never eaten,at least for me, a spicy sauce for a steak. 2nd-the red wine I had ordered which was Cabernet had some sediments in my wine glass.I just thought serving your wine with the "crud in the bottle" is tacky especially for a rated restaurant. I did eat the food & drank the wine but I also mentioned it to our waiter. I'm not the type of person who complains but rather give my suggestions cause I don't want them to think that I looking to get free food. And at the end we still gave our waiter 20% tip."

  • "Felt comfortable as soon as we walked in. Had a sense of elegance but was also inviting and relaxed (Sunday evening). All four of us thought the food was excellent from appetizer to entree to dessert. Creme brulee was, as the kids say,"to die for". Service was very attentive and helpful. Wine selection was good, but pricey. The wonderful time we had was in part due to the good company we shared, but the restaurant certainly made its contribution very well. Our expectations were high due to the restaurant's reputation...our experience was actually a bit higher."

  • "I really like the food here, their burger is indeed the best one in NJ. Their menu is definitely not for everyone since they use ingredients not found on your daily diet, so if you want to try something out of the ordinary, this is the place to go...of course you are going to pay for it, but it is worth it. If you cannot not afford it, don't event bother to come here so you complain later about how expensive it is. If you want to make it a special night, go for it. The servers are very knowledgeable and this is not the place for you to leave unhappy, if there is anything you are not satisfied with, say something (tactfully) and they will make it right! If they have it available, try their lobster lasagna with truffles. It is to die for."

  • "Stage Left is an upscale restaurant that serves high end meats, steaks, and quality meals. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. Their wine selection is extensive and many vintage wines are available...for a price. The steaks are prime cuts and specials often have high end beef like kobe and wagyu. Steaks are cooked to order and the chef was on target with the degree my wife and I wanted our meat cooked. This restaurant has a reputation for their bacon cheeseburgers which are cheaper than other menu items, but pricey for a cheeseburger. My burger was excellent though. Excellent beef used in the burger, cooked to order, and very juicy without being greasy. The reputation is well earned. Dessert was great too."

  • "Brought my girl friend here for her birthday, I got the burger, she got the stuffed lamb. I recommend to add the side of fries to the burger. wine list was super extensive, the server seems to be very knowledgeable, giving a speech on the special menu before main course and cheese after. Dessert was good, not a tons of choices, fall a little to heavy on the sweet side. But overall great food, great service, great experience. Expect ~50+ per person, at least."

  • "I ate here before seeing a show at the theater next door which is very convenient. I have always heard that their burger is one of the best in NJ which is what drew me to this place. However, upon hearing the specials and seeing other items on the menu, you will quickly learn that they are much more than their burger. As a matter of fact, the specials were so good, we didn't even really order from the menu. Because I am a burger guy, I did order it while my wife order a Kobe beef special that is served on a hot salt block from where you can cook pieces of the Kobe beef to your liking. Very clever and unique idea. The burger was really good too but I think you will be more impressed with the other menu items they have to offer!"

  • "The food is outstanding (always has been), but patrons are treated as if they should be "grateful" for being allowed to eat here. The indifference begins when one walks thru the door and there is no host or hostess to greet arrivals. Is the bartender the host? Will someone appear from the coatroom to welcome? Do I need to travel to another room to be seated? At busy times the delay is annoying. The presentation of menu items and specials is well orchestrated and thorough. Delivery of ordered food is prompt and pleasant. Patience is necessary to obtain any follow on service. On this visit my party left without ordering coffee or desert when no server was available to order. If you have time to linger visit. If not, best to look elsewhere."

  • "We've been celebrating Thanksgiving here with my Mom for the past 4 years. This year we had to bring her in a wheelchair and the staff were most accommodating and the table was perfect. The food was as good, if not better, than ever--with the exception of the bread pudding. Cold, and otherwise meh--not nearly up to the rest of the meal. Mom's Valrhona chocolate cake, however, was delicious."
