Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed Stage Left on New Brunswick restaurant week perks. Our family had a great time at a great bills. I'd suggest it as a great place for a romantic outing."

  • "I could not in good conscience reccomend Stage Left. The food was alright but the service was very poor. Our appetizer came and went and then we waited for at least 20 minutes for the main course and this was in spite of our waiter asking if we had a curtain. We had told him yes-8 PM.After the main course was cleared the wait for the dessert menu was so long that we asked for the check as we now had little time to get to the theater. The waiter apologized profusely but still we waited. When he finally brought the check,he also brought a creme brulee(this took alot of time). So again,no,I will not reccomend this restaurant to my worst enemy. Harriette"

  • "Wonderful food, attentive (if sometimes slow) service, quiet and beautiful setting but quite expensive. Wine list contains some very high priced labels but also some relative bargains with modest mark-ups over retail. Scallop appetizer superb as were the steaks and chops all three of us ordered. Sides also great. One wine by the glass was not up to par and was promptly removed from the bill. Will definitely be back but will need to be a special occasion."

  • "From service to food preparation, everything was fantastic. A great choice for theater goers."

  • "In the heart of New Brunswick you wouldn't expect to be surrounded by beautiful flowers and comfortable outdoor seating.Stage left was so inviting. Each course was better than the next. Foie gras was great, staff graciously recommended a excellent Sauternes to pair with it. The wagyu flat iron steak served on a 500 degree himaylian salt brick was unique, fun and tasty. I found a Serbian(!)wine to pair with it which was also excellent. My girlfriend got the halibut which was so fresh, it was plated with some great local produce. To finish we shared a ice cream sundae for 2 which was served in a himaylian salt bowl. It added a really interesting savory element to the ice cream. On a warm summer night, stage left can't be beat."

  • "Although the food was very good, for the prices they charge you would think that a drink on the rocks, in a large rocks glass, should have more than a measured shot with three large cubes. Other than that, our server was outstanding with incredible knowledge of an extremely complex menu/ingredients. I would still keep this place in mind for special occasions."

  • "the waiters were very attentive and the food was superb."

  • "The ambiance in the main dining room was OK - quiet and spacious but nothing special. The food was delicious but overpriced. I've gotten equal or better quality for less. Wine list too was very pricey."

  • "FOOD WAS OUTSTANDING - SO WAS THE PRICE - SO BE PREPARED TO PAY NEW YORK CITY BILLS"

  • "Terrific food and wines, but the service was a bit rough around the edges. We enjoy leisurely dining and weren't in any hurry, but the wait for our main course was extremely long and it was prepared quite differently than described by the server (much more spicy heat). Some of the young-ish waiters seemed a little flustered all evening. Restrooms are located in a short, dark, narrow hallway right outside the kitchen, so on your way there, you're dodging the staff hurrying between the dining room and kitchen."

  • "My father and I are burger nuts so we have had them from all over, and we are always searching for the best, we found it. From the delicious roll to the grass fed beef to the aged Vermont cheddar to the amazing Amish bacon that didn't even have a hint of salt, the flavors married together in a way that simply makes me smile just thinking about it. Can't wait to get back there and thanks to the staff at stage left for amazing culinary experience."

  • "Once again, Stage Left delivers. Even though we've been there more than a few times since they opened, not once have they failed to provide. Excellent food, quiet atmosphere and great service. "

  • "This was our second time eating at Stage Left. The food is outstanding! All five of us thoroughly enjoyed our dinners! The staff are friendly and helpful. There are no bad seats in the restaurant. We did not sit outside but it was inviting! I cannot wait to go back! Do not miss this gem!"

  • "We enjoy good food and wine and Stage Left did not disappoint. The steak tasting, incredible wine selection, and specials made for a delightful evening. The staff was attentive, friendly, and helpful. It was a beautiful evening and while we dined at a wonderful table inside the staff was able to accommodate dessert and drinks outdoors. We will definitely return to Stage Left on our next visits to New Jersey. "

  • "Everything was outstanding. We ordered from the steakhouse menu. Steaks may have been a little undercooked for medium but it didn't matter because they tasted great. All of the sides we ordered were delicious. We got 3 sides for 4 people. Could have ordered 4. Dessert was also terrific. Outstandstanding service!"

  • "Excellent service, amazing food. Perfect for a special occasion. My husband is a foodie and wine snob...his response was "we're going back". Highly suggest. But beware, the prices are very high. Dinner for 3 without liquor was $300 with the gratuity. "

  • "Price was fair, service was a bit slow! Had to wait quite a while for coffee and ice cream at the end. Requested the winery room, but didn't get seated there. Some of the servers were a bit awkward. Overall it was still a very pleasant experience."

  • "Attention to wine and food service excellent, but the softshell crab was too peppery and the lamb entree was bland. Somewhere in between this restaurant shines and it could very well be in the quality of its delicious desserts. "
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "The food has been highly recommended and hits the mark. Excellent burger, and an even better dessert (Chocolate Molten is cake was the best we've ever had!). The cookery of all the other food is at a high level. The only thing that we found lacking was the seemingly inexperienced staff, although they seemed to try. We ordered wine during both visits and both times it took a long time to come out. Overall the experience was good and we would go back again.....probably for the burger alone!"

  • "My wife and I have eaten at Stage Left before and the food has been above par in the past. But this past Tuesday we were very disappointed. My meal, pork porterhouse, was barely eatable. It was a thin cut and it was over cooked, so chewing was an exercise for my fascial muscles. The cream spinach was bland and served at room temperature. My wife had a better experience with her meal, a hamburger. She ordered it medium rare but it was served without any pink. Because we have had good meals prior, we will return. But, never before a show again. "

  • "If you read the title, you read the review. Over-priced and over-hyped. You are better off heading upstairs to Catherine Lombardi's."

  • "Quality in the heart of New Brunswick 2 doors down from the theatre. Young but knowledgable staff quality food. Would definitely go there again."

  • "We visited for a second time in the past month, and experienced both outstanding food and a very nice overall experience. I had perhaps the best foie gras I have eaten in a long time, and tasted Wagyu beef for the first time--a truly remarkable experience. Expensive but well worth the price, the meal was the best I had had in New Jersey in a long time."

  • "I can not say much accept for the fact that after eating at Stage Left, I could die happy. The Steak Flight cooked table side on a 500 degree piece of Himalayan Pink Sea Salt was amazing. The wine was fabulous and to top it off they had the best sweet and salty dessert ever created! I am in love with this place and will visit every time i am in the Tri-State area. "

  • "Can't find much too complain about other than the staff's tendency to engage in "up selling". Sort of like they viewed us more as a marketing opportunity for future events rather than just welcome customers for that night."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "Our spot for special occasion dinners didn't disappoint. The Wagyu steak finished tableside on a hot salt brick was perfectly prepared and presented. Wine choices are excellent and not having to ask to "beg" for a cheese plate to cap off dinner made for a happy ending. Service had been a little uneven a couple of years ago but that seems to have been addressed as our wait staff were all attentive and professional without being overbearing. It's nice not to have to "work" at getting what you want when dining out. Stays at the top of our list."

  • "Enjoyed the food, but the cost seemed very high as compared to food at similar restaurants."

  • "We went to Stage Left b/c it was ranked #3 in NJ and we really wanted to have a good burger! We were pleasently surprised by the service the staff - from the host to busers to the manager/owner asking us how our meal was, everything was very delightful. My only critisim was the time it took to bring out our drinks - I order a glass of wine and my boyfriend ordered a jack and coke. Our appetitizers came out before our drinks but at least we had our waters and the bread was incredibly warm. We really enjoyed our burgers - it had a lot of flavor, simply delicious!"

  • "We took a couple who we go out with often to introduce them to the greatest hamburger! We eat at SL always before going to the State Theater and usually have steak of other great entrée. We all had the hamburger and of course all gave it great reviews!. We will all be back and next time something else on the menu. Potatoes au gratin also went well the hamburger!! Change of pace from fabulous fries."

  • "Our party of 6 chose Stage Left for its proximity to the State Theater where we had tickets. Food was good to excellent but two hours was barely enough. We paid the bill and hustled out and could have used the Half hour it took to get our round of drinks. The steak off the day, which you finish cooking on a salt block at your plate was excellent as was the 48 oz porterhouse. I am a prosciutto fan and the Spanish equivalent ham, I , was exquisite. The round of varied deserts including the gelato and sorbet sampler, chocolate lava cake, and apple strudel made us wish we had more time.Overall excellent marks for food and ambiance, very friendly and attentive service but it could have been a bit quicker at the start to win perfect grades."

  • "My husband and I had a 10pm dinner reservation at stage Left. We were seated within 2 mons of arriving. I had requesed a table near the fireplace and they accomodated. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. He made a few recommendations as well. The steaks were delicious and the atmosphere elegant. A very enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend and return...just be aware the prices are high, but we expected that."

  • "Upon entry we were instantly greeted nicely and seated in the somewhat chilly wine storage dining area. The room doesn't get warm, so it's a great place to sit in the summer time for certain. The service is intentionally slower and that was nice as we wanted to be there for a few hours before our show. The drinks were perfect, the waiters and other staff were of the utmost class and professionalism. This is definitely a place to celebrate an occasion as they even make a menu specific to the occasion by having a name or celebration listed on the menu litterally. Happy Birthday Brooke is said for us. Meanwhile, the specialty items on the menu are worth the trip and the delivery of several steak choices on a salt brick is totally unique."
