Diner Reviews
  • "1002 Brandon was the best waiter I have had. Very personal and professional. Food was excellent and came nice and hot. What a great day! The check in lead waitress was very accommodating."

  • "It has become a tradition having brunch before going to the opera at the Ordway. The food is always good and the service too is very good. The caramel rolls, the various kinds of benedicts and the mimosas and the champagne make this place special as well as the beautiful decor. The setting for the Grill is special too being located in the iconic St. Paul Hotel with its high class lobby and superior staff and outstandiing bar area. We will keep coming back as long as this place is special."

  • "The food is well prepared but the menu is definitely on the pricy side. Despite the pretty view out the windows, the noise level is louder than we would like for a special occasion meal, so it's unlikely we'll rush back."

  • "I have always enjoyed sitting at a cozy booth at the St. Paul Grill and Bar. However, the booths are quite near the open window to the kitchen. On April 12 we had to ask for a different seat because the chef was giving orders to staff in a voice I would describe as "shouting." It was very distracting and definitely not compatible with fine dining. Staff were very accommodating, however, in moving us to a different table and the rest of the evening was very enjoyable. Note that we have eaten more than once in the very same booth and never had a bad experience in the past."

  • "Had a lovely martini and steak meal here with the family. Gluten-free diners, this grand old restaurant does a nice job of taking care of us as well with a special GF menu and knowledgeable staff."

  • "Great civilized experience! Fantastic food, great help, pleasing environment ."

  • "I was disappointed in the meal of medallions. They were presented plainly on the plate; no garnish, and they were dry, chewy and basically tasteless. The sauce was also bland. For the price, I expected a melt in the mouth product; moist, juicy and flavorful. They were cooked medium well but were on the well done side which I'm sure contributed. The noise level in the restaurant was also very disappointing given the price point for this establishment, and we were seated in a booth close to the windows. Unless you have a gift card to use, I would not recommend this restaurant. I did appreciate that they offered to hold our food while we attended a theater show but was disappointed they were not open for late night dessert and coffee."

  • "We went to celebrate my birthday and it couldn't have been more awesome. Everything was wonderful and they got us into a window facing booth! Will definitely go back soon and recommentd to others."

  • "I love the St. Paul Grill for any occasion--a special dinner out or a casual lunch with friends. The food is always delicious and the service is top notch. In the summer the view of Rice Park and the Landmark Center are beautiful and the hotel gardens in front are spectacular! It is my go-to spot!"

  • "We do really like The Grill for all occasions and mostly at all times. As an after-play spot to grab a drink and a snack, my wife and another couple thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This time we chose to sit in the bar which is great for the casual ambiance."

  • "We dined at St. Paul Grill for my wife's birthday and had Jon S. as our server. He was hands down the best server we have ever had. He suggested wine and dinner options and both were superb. He was personable and energetic, we definitely enjoyed our experience so much more because of him. We had the fish special (halibut with asparagus) and it was awesome - the kids (age 9 and 16) both had the Rotisserie Chicken and it was also very good. Food was well portioned and cooked perfectly."

  • "On my way to a nite at the Ordway my date and I made plans to dine at the St. Paul Grill, while the service and the food was very good it was very busy and therefore crowed. Although, I had made reservations in advance they really didn't have good seating when I arrived. The first offering was to seat us in an area that was heavily trafficked since it was in a serving station. The only other choice was a aisle table that had lots of traffic from people entering and leaving. So, it wasn't a very good experience."

  • "Planned dinner at the St. Paul Grill prior to an intimate concert at the music room of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. The meal and service was the beginning and setup for a wonderful event. Food, ambiance, service, all outstanding. We will come back again!"

  • "We spend every anniversary there and this was our 21st. They treated us so well as they always do. The Manager came over and introduced himself and chatted with us and congratulated us. Our server, Kay, was impeccable and has so much personality and wonderful people skills and we hope she is there next year! The food was and is always the best I have ever had. We both had a lovely time and recommend this place to all! Thank you for making us feel like royalty! Laura and Jim McGinn"

  • "Went here on a Saturday at 445pm. We requested a window table before we arrived on low and behold that's what we got. Ordered the app and main course with dessert. All the food was good and served well. Our bill came to 125.00 for two people not counting tip. We knew going in that it would be a little pricey but what the heck. I prob will not be back only because of the price, if price does not matter then by all means go"

  • "We had a wonderful evening with the Grill setting the tone. We followed with Celtic Woman at the Excel Center. A warm smile and welcome from Grill staff, a great meal, and a wonderful performance by the Irish ladies and lads turned into wide grins as we made our way home."

  • "It's a process to have brunch at the St. Paul Grill. Driving to downtown St. Paul, parking and if you valet your car, waiting for a long time to get it back! The food could make it worth the effort, however, the poor service and lack of attention to detail, does not. Will not return here again, and I've been many times in the past."

  • "Had a couple of changes for more seating right before our reservation time and without missing a beat they changed it for us to seat one more adult and two infants...........much appreciated!! Food at our Brunch was enjoyable and our server was very helpful................"

  • "We enjoyed our window table, with a view of the Hotel's winter garden, and beautiful Rice Park across the street. Excellent food and great service! Loved ease of valet parking, also!"

  • "The food is always wonderful, thanks to a great chef. This particular visit we did not receive good service, but that is very unusual for the St. Paul Grill, but this dining experience was very unpleasant."

  • "It had been about 12 years since I had been to the St. Paul Grill, so I decided to bring my mother there before a performance at the Ordway Theater. First, the bar area and vast scotch selection is fabulous! The food was solid, but not particularly memorable, which is the exact same feeling I had 12 years ago (probably why it took 12 years to return). The service was very efficient. We received everything at the pace we were looking for. Although our server had a great sense of pace, she wasn't all that friendly or patient. It was almost like she didn't respect us, though we gave her no reason not to. Overall, it was a very good dinner and I would not hesitate to go back, and I hope it won't be another 12 years."

  • "The st. Paul Grill has been a brunch favorite for many years, especially when preceding a day at the opera. However, today was quite louder than usual and the service not as attentive as usual either. (Plus we were seated by a server station set up in the middle of the restaurant?!) The food is always amazing! We will return, but hoping for our usual experiences for the future!"
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "We always enjoy coming here before the opera. The various Benedicts are always good. One thing to be noted is that the glass of champagne is no longer complimentary but there is a charge for it. I foresee a time when there is a charge for the caramel rolls. So it goes. Bit by bit prices go up. We however enjoy the ambience and the excellent service and feeling special being here."

  • "Bill and I enjoyed the perfect evening. I'm usually quick with feedback, if necessary, but I could not find fault in any part of the evening. We felt guilty eating the food, in-fact, as it was prepared so wonderfully and the tastes just popped out of our mouths."

  • "With a table by the window, where we could look out at the lights sparkling on the park, on the Landmark Center, on the Ordway Theatre, and on the rest of the landscape that forms one of the greatest urban spaces in America, our annual wedding anniversary dinner at the St. Paul Grill made the nastiest Minnesota winter in a quarter-century seem pretty nice after all! Excellent meal, attentive but unobtrusive service, and good feelings throughout the room. Great special occasion spot!"
