Diner Reviews
  • "St. John's remains one of my favorite restaurants in the world, and I live in a far larger city, and travel internationally at least once a month. Really, Chattanoogans don't know what they're getting (or missing!), and for far less than comparable meals elsewhere."

  • "Enjoyed a pleasant evening with friends at St. John's on a Saturday evening. The service was well orchestrated and nit obtrusive. The food was very good, locally procured and nicely prepared and presented. The Wagyu beef steak was underwhelming but the remainder of the dishes were very good. Nice ambience and we were not rushed even though we were the last party in the place! Overall, a very nice dining experience."

  • "My family came to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday. St. John's was the perfect place for our dinner. The food was exciting and perfectly prepared. The atmosphere was quiet and beautiful. Couldn't have had a better experience. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We went to celebrate our anniversary because we had heard good things about the restaurant. The service was impeccable. Our waiter was solicitous without being overbearing. You will not find better service anywhere. In our view, the good was very good but not exceptional and overpriced. The wine list is exceptional."

  • "From the time you walk into St. John's, you are treated as a guest. The hostess greeted us with a smile, the waiter was kind and offered thoughtful suggestions and the food was absolutely wonderful! If you have a special occasion to celebrate and are willing to spend a little more than normal (plan on over $100 for 2 people), this is the place to go in Chattanooga!"

  • "Our group had an outstanding experience here recently. The food and the service were top-notch. Server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the bar items. Could not have been better. Also, extremely moderately priced for the quality of the food and service."

  • "We were a party of 3 and sat at the bar - we shared several dishes and every bit was delish! Fresh with each ingredient appropriately showcased. The beef carpacio was unique and amazing. The pork belly, in its own right, is a reason to go back again and again... Best sea bass ever...and, the squash ravioli was a fireworks display of flavors in your mouth. Our tastebuds were most happy!!"

  • "St. John's never disappoints. The food is always delicious, creative and fresh. They have a wonderful wine and cocktail list. The Little Italy was the perfect summer drink. The duck was cooked to perfection. They were especially attentive and went above and beyond to acknowledge the birthdays in the group. Thank you for making it such a wonderful experience."

  • "We first dined at St. Johns a few years ago and had such a memorable meal that it became the standard by which we judge other fine food restaurants. Always hoping to dine there again, we were able to do so recently. Our experience this time was even more memorable. We arrived a few minutes prior to our reservation and were seated promptly. The black napkins for those wearing dark clothing is always a nice touch and appreciated by my wife. Our server, Leah, was very attentive, pleasant and efficient. We had a starter of steak tartare followed by the chef's 5 course sampler which was marvelous. Each course perfectly timed and attractively presented. As my wife remarked, "There is nothing they could have done to make it any better.""

  • "We have never eaten at St John's before but chose it to celebrate our anniversary, and we were not disappointed. The attention to detail- started on what we were wearing, we both had on black and instead of white napkins we were given black. Our waiter was wonderful on recommendations and everything we ate was absolutely great. The atmosphere was very romantic and we were able to have wonderful conversation. We will be back and would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My wife and I both loved the food, the service and the ambiance. St. John's plays jazz type music and we really enjoy that with our dinner. In terms of food, we started with the Smoked Corn Chowder (wife) and the Maine Lobster & Frisee Salad (me). Wife rated the soup excellent and my salad was amazing. For main courses, wife had the Maple Leaf Farm Duck Breast & Confit cooked medium rare. The fat cap was nice and crispy and the breast was cooked perfectly. I chose the Wild Pacific Salmon on a bed of white polenta, sauteed greens and pork belly broth. Salmon was very good but I probably should have had them cook it medium versus medium rare. We finished the meal off with a carrot cake souffle that was excellent. We will definitely return!"

  • "This was the single best dining experience I or my wife have ever had. Everything was top notch from the second we walked in. We expected great service and what we got was far beyond that. I left a simple note with my online reservation stating it was our first wedding anniversary, and they made it even more special. Adding "happy anniversary" to the top of our menus was a clever and flattering idea. We were seated in a room all to ourselves with soft music playing and the tackle was never empty of food. The chef even sent us samples in between courses of pastries and their spring salad. We have absolutely no complaints whatsoever, and plan to make a trip to st John's a routine outing (as often as our wallets will let us)."

  • "There isn't much I can say about St. John's that hasn't already been said. One can tell that they truly care about the entire dining experience from presentation to preparation it is all perfection. I was particularly impressed that the bartender did web research to learn how to make my favorite drink. Bravo! My compliments to the chef on perfectly prepared duck!"

  • "Hostess was great. Food was so so. Waiter was terrible. He was obsessed with removing anything dirty from our table. As a result he decided to stack up an enormous amount of plates, silverware, glasses, bread basket, and my wife's food to be boxed up in order to retire them to the kitchen. Upon doing so he almost dropped all of them. My wife had to help him catch them and re-stack. The bread basket ended up in my wife's food. He apologized and quickly ran to the kitchen. A few minutes later he dropped by with a hefty check (expected) and my wife's food minus the bread basket. Kinda gross in my opinion. He offered nothing about that situation except for "oops...sorry". My wife left the food. I left knowing I would never return."

  • "We dine here twice a year while passing through Chattanooga and consistently have excellent, creative food, locally sourced, in a setting with great ambiance. Excellent wine list and knowledgeable, friendly staff. A highlight of our annual drive to and from Florida."

  • "Great service. Specialty seasonal cocktails and food selections were great. Very fresh and vibrant. Presentation meet my expectations for a highly touted restaurant. Price aligned with similar restaurants of this quality. "

  • "I'm relatively new to Chattanooga and had heard very complimentary comments from neighbors about St. John's, but I dined there for the first time this week. I have to say it is now my favorite resturant in the area. Even though it was a Tuesday night, the place was very crowded, but something about the accoustics in the room subdued the noise level. I dined with a group of out of town business associates that are accustomed to fine dining. All were impressed by both the flavor and presentation of our dishes. The trout mouse, steak tartare and beet salad were the stand outs of a collection of very nice dishes. For Chattanooga it's a bit pricey, but I will certainly dine there again at the first opportunity."

  • "Son made reservations for his graduation celebration. Nice facility and nice staff but food was very so so. Limited fish selection. Interesting offerings for the first course but only two. Scallops had NO flavor, like eating cardboard and there were only three (small). Main courses - we had two filets ordered the same and one was gray and one was medium rare as ordered. Salmon was fine, cooked right and nice flavor. Lamb and Duck were bland. Desserts were great but just a tasting size serving. Had three other better meals around town - One was as good as it gets - try Terra Mae at the Stone Fort Inn. Also, Easy Bistro. Both very relaxed atmosphere, great selection and execution."

  • "Found this restaurant rated #1 in TripAdvisor and boy do the folks have it right. Great food, service and ambiance. Very well trained wait staff top to bottom. My wife and I had two different salads which were outstanding. She then had a Filet and I enjoyed the Waygu steak entree. Can not express how good both entree's were presented and the way they were cooked, outstanding! Will return next time visiting Chattanooga with pleasure "

  • "This was the first time we dined at St. John's. They lived up to their reputation. The old building was full of character. The décor was very nice without feeling pretentious. The food was excellent. My husband had beef & I had the halibut. Both were delicious & perfectly cooked. Our server was professional & knowledgeable yet friendly. When we visit Chattanooga again we will certainly come back. "

  • "We had such high hopes. Everyone we asked told us that St. John's was the BEST restaurant in Chattanooga. We learned just before dining there that both management and the exec. chef had just changed so we were a bit apprehensive. Since this was our first experience at St. John's we have no comparison between what it was and what it is now. What I can say is that we were disappointed with both the service and the food. Our server, although well meaning, got both starters wrong. The entrees sounded great on the menu but the proteins (trout and veal) were seriously under seasoned, which the flavorful sauce just couldn't make up for. St. John's has a great reputation so we can only hope that they are just experiencing some growing pains. "

  • "Beautiful restaurant (we sat in the main room downstairs), incredibly nice and helpful waiter and mostly delicious food served in very generous portions. We loved the garden salad, wagyu beef and grapefruit mule cocktail. The lobster onion soup was good, but not as incredible as we were expecting. The vidalia risotto dish and carrot cake souffle were also very good, but not off the charts. Overall, though, we had a wonderful dining experience. "

  • "We always have a wonderful experience at St. John's and The Meeting Place. As a former wine sales rep, I have had the pleasure of eating at many renowned restaurants all over the world and this one is still one of my favorites for food and ambiance. "
