Diner Reviews
  • "We were impressed with the service, ambience and food. We spent a very pleasant two and a half hours enjoying an excellent dinner."

  • "Our second time at St Jack, first time at the NW location. I couldn't wait to order the Coquilles St Jack, as the first time I had it there it was the best version I'd had. Second time was also very good, though it was a smaller portion in a smaller dish, with much less sauce. Disappointed about that. For my entree I had the mussels, which were very plump, cooked just right. The ginger/cream flavored liquid it was cooked in was also very good, with plenty of it to soak my bread in. My guests also enjoyed their salmon and onion tart entrees. Dining room is not as attractive (at least to me) as the old location, and the noise level was quite high. Service was good, though there was a couple of times I needed my waiter and couldn't find her"

  • "Unfortunately, we went during the recent heat wave and the restaurant was stifling on a Saturday night. The waitress said that the air conditioning in the building just didn't work very well. Small consolation as we sweated through our meal. The food itself was very good. Chicken liver mousse is outstanding. My spouse didn't like her frogs leg special too much, but my duck breast was quite good. All in all, a nice French style bistro. Not as creative or exquisite as Le Pigeon, but good."

  • "First time at St Jacks for us. The food was well prepared and creative, though we have had a meal of this quality at restaurants that charge much less. It was a hot day and I perceived no air conditioning. Also not a very intimate dining experience--close quarters with other diners. No complaints about the service or the chef!"

  • "Love the food but service not so much. I actually went to the kitchen to get olive oil and butter for the bread. On the other hand everyone was friendly and smiling."

  • "The food is just as fabulous as it was in the old east side location. The ding room ambiance is open and airy with a fairly high noise level when busy. Highly recommend the duck breast and butter lettuce salad. We will be back."

  • "The food is outstanding along with attentive service. We had their sliced tenderloin appetizer special and for dinner we had duck and salmon. All were prepared to perfection, tasty and to some degree unusual. We will eat there again, but not in the summer. The doors are open, the air conditioning is going and it is warm, too warm. The music is too loud because you can hear it, particularly when it goes to rap. We also had the pleasure of sun in my eyes for the first half hour. All these annoyances do not entice me back too soon."

  • "Brought my Francophile foodie friend here for dinner and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Between the steak tartare, yummy olives and baguette, mussels, quail, frommage plate and delicious madeleines, I was reminded of my trip to Nice just a month ago. Lovely and divine!"

  • "Very disappointed. Waited more than an hour for our entree. Manager came over but refused to take our protests to heart. She could have done the right. She chose not to. Regardless of his good the food was we'll never go back. And if decent and respectable service is important to you, neither should you."

  • "People love French food and culture. They forget that sometimes it can be bad food or culture. St. Jack is an example of good to mediocre food and with bad service. I loved the salmon and the spring salad were both tasty fresh and the salmon was cooked to perfection about half an hour after we finished our first course. My date had the snails and the onion tart both were extremely salty. His tongue was burning from the salt. When we brought it to our server's attention she offered us desert. I don't care for that solution a refund on those dishes is appropriate."

  • "Excellent food and service. Not cheap by any means but worth it. Lots of small plates, all of which were yummy. The only negative was the noise level - way too loud. They need to do something about the acoustics."

  • "First time dining in the new location and we were surprised at how much the quality of the dining had deteriorated. First, the bare cement walls create a noise level that has to be in excess of 100 decibels. Second, the additional seating and the capacity of the kitchen are out of synch. Long waits for first and entree courses are the rule. The tables around us were experiencing the same. Third, the quality of preparation is not up to any reasonable standard. I ordered a Lyonnaise salad, the egg was the consistency of a hard boiled egg. Sent it back and the next one was just like the first. Amazing."

  • "Love this new location for St. Jack. The larger space feels great. The new staff is fantastic...very helpful, knowledgable, polite and cheerful. We felt very welcome there. They have a nice bar with great counter space, which is a nice option for dinner, when a table is not available. The menu is fantastic. They kept some of the favorite items, but changed some of the entrees. I had the Duck L'orange and it was so delicious."

  • "Traditional French dishes with a unique flair. Duck breast was as good as it gets. Even the broccoli was unique and delicious."

  • "We love a vibrant, energetic restaurant experience but it's just unfortunately too loud."

  • "it was so noisey that we had to yell across the table. Expensive, and the food was good, but not fabulous."

  • "We were late for our dinner reservation and the hotess gave the table to someone else. The hostess found us a great seat at the bar and the service was solicitous throughout our dinner. We could not have been happier. And all dishes were delicious."

  • "We had an early dinner before a play at St. Jack, arriving at 5:00. Food was great and served piping hot. Attentive and personable service by our waiter. Loved every minute of our time there. By 6:00 the place was full of people having a great time. Loved the salmon served with lots of beautiful vegetables cooked perfectly with a wonderful broth."

  • "Enjoyed St. Jack at their prior location. Recent dining with friends however was truly mediocre at best. The menu looked interesting but the food was overcooked, over-seasoned, and truly not pleasant tasting. On the plus side, the entire staff was delightful and the service was excellent. I will not be returning."

  • "St. Jack has a wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. My salmon was perfect. While the service was friendly and good; it always takes such a long time for the initial contact with the server and it takes forever for that first cocktail to arrive. It was 25 minutes after we were seated before we received our drinks. That's way too long. And then when we were ready to order wine, we had to wait too long to let our server know. This is a consistent issue in my St. Jack visits which all 4 of us have experienced. It's still worth going there; the food is consistently very good. And the staff is always gracious and friendly."

  • "We finished the last night of our 4 day Portland girls trip at ST Jacks at the recommendation of another waiter at another restaurant! We had such a fun time, and really amazing food. The staff was delightful, fun, and charming. The ambiance was very warm and comfortable. It was a great way to end a wonderful trip."

  • "I don't think I have been in a more noisy restaurant. I had an app on my iPhone that showed 86 decibel average with peaks at 99! It's rock concert level and often there you wear ear-plugs. The food was too salty. All the dishes we got: The cod croquettes, the bone-marrow salad, the coquilles St-jacques. Only the dessert was great (the dark-chocolate mousse cake)"

  • "Had dinner with our friends. The service was great- just enough interaction but they were never bothering us or interrupting and had good suggestions. Amazing food- the chicken liver mousse is mouth watering and we always enjoy trying something new here."

  • "We were visiting Portland from NYC and had seen a review of St. Jack. This was a memorable meal- we ordered several small dishes and appetizers instead of main courses. One was better and more interesting than the next. The service was great, the setting fun and informal but the main reason for eating at St. Jack is the absolutely outstanding food. The flavors seem to explode in your mouth. Why can't NYC have restaurants like this??"

  • "My son and I had dinner. The drinks were good, the service was super, and the food was good. The place is noisy as a million people have reported. So that plus my sons steak was more well than medium and only 4 slices, gives it a 4 overall. My entree, the clams, was fit for two so he got to eat some of my clams which was necessary to fill him up. "

  • "probably the worst noise in a restaurant I have experienced in a while. impossible to talk across the table to friends, felt hoarse after leaving . the food and service are good but the place needs to reduce noise a lot before I would go back "

  • "Great food, cocktails and service. Ambiance is a bit bland, but typical of the genre. The dining room can get quite noisy when full. The bar is a great place to enjoy apppetizers and St. Jack's excellent cocktail list, or sample from the great wine list. "

  • "My first time in the new location. The service was wonderful, but it was crowded and very loud. The food was lovely and tasted wonderful. My absolute favorite Steak Tartare. It is brighter and more vibrant then the old location, but the noise level was tough. Still all in all a great place to dine."

  • "Saint Jack's new location is fantastic - airy, open, and comfortable. Services is welcoming and courteous. And the food is just as good as I remember - great classic French dishes, well prepared and executed. But I doubt I'll be coming back. Even though the restaurant was only 2/3rds full, the noise level was almost unbearable. We were really looking forward to catching up with another couple, but the noise level was so loud, that we practically had to yell across the table."

  • "A variety of interesting choices. Good food, attractive presentation and good wine. Small intimate, But very noisy. For the noise level, would not hurry back."

  • "My husband and I took a friend from out of town here, and we had a great time. ALL the staff was extremely friendly and the service was wonderful. We shared a few plates together, and I am really glad we went this route rather than getting our own dishes. Oysters, LOVED. Fromage, honestly think this is not worth the money, unless there is some cheese you REALLY want to try. Lyonnaise Salad, amazing. Steak Tartare, delish. Duck...REALLY good. It was mostly cooked perfectly, and the sauce was amazing. We all agreed though, that the onion tarte was the winner. So good, and unexpected. Loved it!"

  • "lovely food and our waiter was excellent, but pleasant experience with unfortunate end - we were a party of 5 and we ordered lots of food and wine, certainly the restaurant did well out of us - yet after about 2 and a half hours, as we had paid our bill and were just winding down, the hostess approached our table and asked us ( very politely) to vacate the table for the next party. understandable that they needed the table, but when you've just dropped $100 per person, offer to buy us a drink at the bar or something - don't make us feel like inconsiderate children, adding a bitter note to an otherwise lovely evening "

  • "I have yet to be dissappointed by the food at St.Jack. Classic French, twisted some times, but always delicious! Service was much better this time; attentive, professional, pleasant, courteous. Bit of a wait for the main course though. Sweetbreads (my ultimate go-to menu item anywhere!) were a special this night. Presented excellently, cooked oh-so tenderly, but lacked seasoning befitting the entire plate : ( Steak Onglette for my partner, was t-o-u-g-h! Still, everything else - oysters, chicken liver mousse, cheese, salad, Coquille - were awesome! If you are wavering about trying St Jack, don't! Go! You will love the food, enjoy the service and tune out the load, ambient noise."

The staff is friendly, competent and professional, our waiter was great, giving us very good wine advise. Had happy hour last week with my daughter and friend, great menu and wine. Will be back"

  • "When St. Jack opened in SE Portland 3 1/2 years ago it was an instant neighborhood gem. We liked to go sit at the bar and let Kyle make us delicious cocktails and eat chicken liver mouse and steak frites. Then it got more and more difficult to get in. Then it was flooded by "foodies". Then it became impersonal. Kyle was the only person who remembered anyone and then he left. Then you started waiting for your food. wait and wait and wait. On my 51st birthday we waited 15 minutes for our bottle of wine. We stopped going. Tried the new place. Feels like a corporate place. So crazy loud! We waited 45 minutes for our entrees after the salad. The waiter only brought 2 of 3 meals ordered. Had to ask for it. We were a party of 3. Won't be back!"
