Yes, the steaks, shrimp cocktail, and martinis are legendary! And how many 5 star restaurants can serve an excellent bean soup? However, my husband and I absolutely love the mashed potatoes!!! I have tried unsuccessfully to recreate them at home (using buttermilk, sour cream, whipping cream, etc--but I cannot do it!!

I guess its a famous restaurant but we won't be returning - the shrimp cocktail was smothered in a horseradish sauce that had way too much horseradish in it to really enjoy it - I ate one and couldn't eat more. It really was a shame the shrimp were so large and lovely. The steak was just ok - save your money and go to Ruths instead.

  • Elmo's never disappoints

I first ate at St. Elmo's in the mid 1970's. It hasn't changed much, and in this case that is a good thing. I like mostly ethnic food and pub grub for dinner out, but for special occasions, St. Elmo's is the place. Outstanding steaks, salads, bean soup, and the legendary Shrimp Cocktail, with pungent sauce made with fresh ground horseradish...clears your sinuses, blows your mind. Very simple menu...steaks, a few fish dishes, one pork and chicken dish each. Beautifully done sides. Excellent wine list, and good beer selection, draft and bottles. Pricey (not as pricey as some similar restaurants), but worth every penny...service is very attentive without being obtrusive. St. Elmo's gets the dining experience right.

Went to St. Elmo's on our honeymoon having seen it on one of our favorite shows (Parks and Recreation.) I was not disappointed. The wait staff was extremely professional and very friendly. The appearance felt was a 1930s yet modern feel. While the food menu is smaller they have a huge wine list along with several other drinks. It was here I was able to try Lagavullin scotch that I had been looking for for quite awhile. The food itself was incredible. While the main entrees are a bit more pricey, the quality and portions are such that I feel they are appropriate. I would recommend St Elmo's to anyone and look forward to returning next time I am in Indianapolis.

The shrimp cocktail aside, the rest of the meal was very ordinary. It was difficult to understand our waiter-he did not speak English very well and his voice was very soft in a loud room. I have had much better steaks at other steakhouses such as Capital Grill, Del Fresco's and Gene and Georgetti. The steaks were a little overpriced for the quality and they need to have a couple more non-beef items on the menu.

The food is as good as any place (especially in Indy) Make sure to get the shrimp cocktail. The "cocktail" sauce isn't really a sauce, it is better described as a salsa like paste with an overwhelming delicious horse radish flavor, but be careful, the strength is near wasabi like.

Overall, St. Elmo was terrific and I can see why it's been in business for 100 years and, per our server, it's in the top ten of highest grossing restaurants in the United States. The shrimp cocktail is famous for a reason - tasty and almost unbelievably spicy. Excellent though at $16.99 for four to five shrimp you can see why the restaurant makes a lot of money. The dry aged ribeye special was tasty though the steak was quite fatty. Very impressive wine list with something for every taste. And the infused Maker's Mark on the rocks... heavenly. They've obviously got a good thing going and I'd definitely recommend. Service was a tad slow but our server was very friendly and helpful about the area.

Took my boyfriend here while he was visiting town. The dinner was excellent and the service was great. My only complaint was that St. Elmo's would not honor the gift card I had been given by my brother. They claimed that the company that they did gift cards with was changing banks so they could not verify the card. While I know that this is not the fault of St. Elmo's, but more and issue with their gift card provider, they did little at all to address the issue. Essentially I was just given my gift card back and told, sorry it didn't work but if you come back again it should work at that time. I feel like they could have done something to make the situation a little less frustrating. Now I'm out $100 more than I thought I would be!

Went there for the first time last Saturday. The food was very good but UNBELIEVABLY expensive. Definitely a place for us to go for a special occasion. Our family was dressed up, but it was surprising to us the number of people who were in jeans. DID NOT like how close the tables were to each other. Felt like the people sitting next to us heard every word of our conversation. Our waiter was nice…but not exceptional for the $45 tip that he received. Overall a 3-4 star in our book.
