Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was near perfection as far as the restaurant experience. I do however, have one gripe when it comes to the reservation. I first used open table, and the available reservations that came up were very scarce. I had to chose an awkward time (8:30 on a Sunday) because it appeared almost all other reservations over a 2 week period were taken. I did need to modify the reservation however, and decided to call the restaurant directly. It turned out there were MANY other available reservations. We waited almost 2 weeks to dine here because of open table saying there were no reservations left. When I called the staff was very friendly in helping me modify my reservation. Next time I will most likely not use open table and just call direct"

  • "We had great service and our waiter Chandler was very friendly and on top of things. We never had to ask for refills or anything because we were asked first. The food was excellent. We we like the Devour Downtown menu too a little more in our price range. We love that it is offered every Sunday and we will be back."

  • "We celebrated two family birthdays with the Devour Downtown menu. Our filet mignon was excellent as well as our service!"

  • "This was our first time at St. Elmo's and their reputation is correct. The food was superb, the service was excellent, and it was an overall good experience minus a screaming toddler amoungst a group of all couples looking to "get away" for a nice meal such and my husband and myself. We took advantage of the Devour Downtown special which also helped in not spending as much to enjoy the famous Shrimp Cocktail and succulent steak. Overall, very pleased with the quality of all the food served."

  • "Small child who would scream at times at the table next to us, which was very close, did not add to the experience."

  • "Everything everyone has ever said about it. Unbelievably shrimp cocktail. The best filet I've ever had. Great service. Beautiful atmosphere. Great experience. It was our first visit and won't be the last"

  • "Had one of my better prices of beef in a long time. The shrimp cocktail is to die for. The waitstaff is very attentive, informative friendly and quick. I will definitely recommend this spot to anyone traveling in this area."

  • "My ribeye was very gristly, not marbled. My dates filet had several veins? And tough spots in her cut. I generally love this place.... But tonight it was subpar at best...."

  • "Unbelievable Steaks ... Best aged & tasting I've experienced in 40 Years !!!"

  • "The food was good- we did the devour downtown menu. There was an upcharge for EVERYTHING! The shrimp was good, and salad was ok. However, half of my steak tasted like it had been cooked on a burnt surface. Neither my boyfriend or I could eat it. The inside was cooked correctly but I think they had shared space on the grill or oven with burnt meat? It is hard to describe the taste. Also, the soda was watered down heavily several times. For a $150 meal for two, I think I would try a different steakhouse."

  • "Overall the experience was pretty good. My steak that I ordered came back wrong. My steak came back well done but it was ordered medium well."

  • "Never fails to be one of the best meals around. Devour Downtown makes it an affordable opportunity for people to come and enjoy their outstanding steaks. We had excellent service also."

  • "Through the Devour event, my brother and I revisited St Elmos after over 25 yrs from our last visit. It was such a treat to see how beautiful it was and the changes made. We had find memories of taking our parents there. It was a lovely event and the food and service was beyond compare! A great way to introduce new people coming to Indianapolis. Thank you!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and most specifically our waiter was outstanding. Wine list was amazing and we will count this as one of our very best dining experiences."

  • "Our food was very good, but our steals were cold. My husband paid extra for a larger steak and it looked like the exact same size as mine. O had cheesecake for dessert and loved it. My husband did not especially love his creme brulee. Our reservation was for 5 and we were immediately seated, in the basement in a far dark room. Neither of us enjoyed that when there were numerous empty tables we walked past. Our waiter was great. We would go back, but would insist on hot steaks...especially for the price"

  • "Excellent food, service and experience. Enjoyed the special for Devour Downtown. Highly recommend St. Elmo's for any occasion."

  • "This is, hand's down, the best Filet Mignon you can find in Indianapolis. I was surprised though at a restaurant of this reputation, that the waiter screwed up three times. He was exceptionally amiable, but at my table of five, he forgot that one of my guests ordered a salad, he brought the wrong side dish to another, and he brought the wrong dessert to another."

  • "We took advantage of the Devour Downtown event to experience St. Elmo's. The food was out of this world! Everything had great flavor and the portions weren't so big as to be unreasonable. The noise level was the only thing that was not top notch. We were in the back room and every table was filled so we were almost shouting to hear one another. The wait staff was very attentive and overall, we had a great experience."

  • "St. Elmo's is my favorite restaurant in IN. I convinced 4 first-timers to join me during Devour Downtown. The ambiance and food were both outstanding, but the service was a disappointment, which was a first for me at St. Elmo's. We arrived at 6:45pm for our 7pm reservation but weren't seated until 7:20pm. That didn't bother me as much as not receiving much attention from our server for about 5-7 minutes after sitting down. Throughout the evening, service continued to be limited and slow from our primary server. Again, this was my first experience with disappointing service and I understand everyone has bad days, but I was bummed this was the first experience at St. Elmo's for my friends and the service did not live up to the hype I gave it!"

  • "Our food was prepared as requested. The taste of our steaks was wonderful. It was a very enjoyable experience. Looking forward to eating there again next year."

  • "We went to St. Elmo's for a special occasion in our family. The anticipation was high and we were not let down. We were first seated in a nice room, but was placed against the back wall. I, personally, do not liked to be crunched up against a wall and have to stare at it. So, I asked that we be moved and the gentleman waiting on us promptly granted our request. After a little "history" lesson regarding St. Elmo's, we were greeted with a very nice variety of breads and our drinks. My wife and her son had the famous shrimp and cocktail sauce...much to their delight! At our table, we had the regular rib-eye, a cowboy rib-eye, and the evening special dry-aged 12oz. NY strip. All three were absolutely amazing and the fresh fries were great!!!"

  • "St Elmo's is a must-see attraction in Indy. It has the history and dining experience that you will absolutely not find anywhere else in the city, and few places in the country. Their steaks are wet aged except for typically one dry-aged option so the filet is the very best option and they do it exceptionally well. You might be able to find a steak of similar quality other places in the city but you cannot beat the experience and the history of this place. It is perfect for a special date-night or business dinner with an amazing wine-list."

  • "Have lived in Indy for years and this was my 1st time here. Delicious!! Food and service (Rico, our Waiter has worked there for 25 years! That says something! We had the Devour Downtown special: Famous Shrimp Cocktail or Salad; filet, chicken, or salmon; creme brule (SP?), cheesecake, or chocolate cake. My friend chose shrimp and I chose salad and we split. Even the salad was phenomenal. Both had the filet that came with green beans and mashed potatoes. My ideal meal :) Dessert, one of us ordered the creme brule and the other chocolate cake. We couldn't finish it all! I will say that I will probably not get the creme brule again though. We both thought it was a little too custardy."

  • "Food and service was impeccable. Only negative was it being so hard to hear eachother during conservation. We were in the basement."

  • "In today's competitive restaurant market, this place continues to offer excellent food, service and ambience. It is expensive, but we felt we got the quality we paid for. The service was perfect. We were seated in the lower level which was great because the upper level was extremely noisy. I would request the lower level I. Future visits."

  • "We had good food and good service, though it was not very conducive to conversation. The room we were in was quite loud."

  • "Our food was fantastic. The steak was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes are some of the best I've had. Most importantly the service was top notch. I left feeling great about the experience."

  • "Had reservatins and were seated immediatly in this busy place. Service outstanding, wine list is one of the very best in town and Not overpriced. Best Filet M., tasty mashed potatoes and crunchy green beens."

  • "Our first visit here for girls night out and we will definitely be back, the atmosphere and the people was just great. Scott was great from the time we sat down to when we left, the food OMG. Great place and great staff. Thank You!"

  • "We brought some out of town vendors from Boulder, CO to St. Elmo's. They enjoyed the local beers, and thought the food was fantastic."
    Dined on 8/25/2014
  • "Very good but still overpriced. One of the better steaks I've had, but I can pay less than half the price and get one almost as good. Also, the "world famous shrimp cocktail" may be famous but you can't enjoy the flavor because it's so spicy. I like spicy food and think it probably had a really good underlying flavor, but it was basically impossible to tell. If you've got the budget it's worth going here to try the steak and shrimp and to say you've been, but it's not worth going back because it's overpriced."

  • "I loved the whole experience from entering through the bar - to our table. The decor and energy is superb! Our waiter was very good at helping us order - and of course, the shrimp cocktail is a MUST! And the steaks are excellent too! Will definitely go back next visit to Indy! Thanks for an exceptional dining experience!"
