Diner Reviews
  • "I had an early dinner with a friend at St. Charles prior to an orchestra concert. The dining room was not yet overcrowded and bustling with noise and activity. Nothing is wrong with that, of course, as there's a certain energy that comes with it, but the lesser crowded, quieter atmosphere allowed my friend and I to have a nice conversation. Our server was on top of everything and very capable. We told her we had to be at the event at a certain time, and she made sure we were taken care of in a timely fashion. It was great."

  • "The service and food were great, I was in a party of five, we sat in a quiet booth. Loved the bourbon flights, the staff was very knowledgeable about the bourbon. We all had different entrees and they were all wonderful. The side dishes were large enough to share, and we had plenty of leftovers to take home and enjoy the next day. This is the second time I have eaten there, and will definitely go again."

  • "This is what white table dining is about - great food, great drink, and top notch service. Courses are well paced and the meal is not hurried. Recommendations for food and wine pairings are on the spot. The ambiance of a historic building is accentuated and complimented by the decor and staff. Very enjoyable experience."

  • "Our meal was nice. Presntation was excellent. Matza dumplings with the duck were a little heavy and the bone in ribeye was good not excellent. On the other hand the duck was perfect as were the pork chops and spaetz;le"

  • "We visited just before going to a show. The staff was great and facilitated getting us out in time. Service was great, only issue was not placing on item that easily was confusing in the conversation. They made up for it by not charging which was much appreciated but not necessary."

  • "I live in Louisville and wanted to give my European colleagues a taste of the city. St Charles met all expectations. Food, dessert, drinks were exceptional! Deviled egg appetizer and the Old Fashioned are a must. The maple-bourbon cake with candied bacon was phenominal! This was my second time there. I love it and will keep going back. My colleagues were so impressed. Service was a little slow for my taste, but they may have been keeping their distance because we kept talking business. The atmosphere (volume, lighting) is great for business dinners. Love the high ceilings, all the wood accents around the bar. And it's walking distance to the Louisville Slugger to show off the bat, another great must-see for out-of-towners."

  • "We loved our meal at St. Charles Exchange. The lamb shank was amazing, and the assorted cheese plate was delicious. They have a highly impressive wine/bourbon/cocktail list. It is a very loud restaurant. It was difficult to carry on normal conversation because of the noise level. However, the food was fabulous, and this restaurant is a "must try"."

  • "Great food, terrific service and attentive to the fact we had to make the theatre curtain. All went well"

  • "The food was excellent along with the variety of the menu. The portions were large. The cocktail menu was notable along with the bourbon flights and whiskey selection. The service was moderately fast. The atmosphere was lively and crowded. The interior reminded me of a classic nineteenth century restaurant. But, everything was brand new and very clean."

  • "What is happening on the culinary landscape in Louisville continues to win awards and garner accolades world-wide. St. Charles Exchange executive chef Mark Ford is among a handful of young Louisville chef who promise to keep this amazing landscape not only growing but flourishing. Chef Ford has a background of classical French food, he has taken that background to produce what is very current, but in no way trendy. To say the chef's food and presentation is wonderful is a bit of an understatement, to say that he puts his heart and soul into ever single dish that comes out of the kitchen is accurate. Chef Ford combined with the drive and perfection demanded by GM Lauren Farrar-Molina makes for fab find that is truly fit for any foodie."

  • "This place never disappoints. We have been here several times and the quality of the food and service never disappoint."

  • "The restaurant was busy and typically I consider that a good sign. Service was ok (6 out of 10). Food was ok (7 out of 10). Dessert was excellent (9 out of 10). We ordered beers and it took us 4 tries to get one they actually had on hand. What kind of bar runs out of so many things? For such a fancy place I was disappointed over all. I think the part that makes me feel the most cheated is the price. I don't feel like I got what I paid for. If the prices went down, or the execution went up, I would change my opinion. But as it stands, I wasn't overly impressed. They did acknowledge my friends birthday. They didn't sing or anything gaudy. The waitress just wished him a happy birthday. When I made the reservation I mentioned his birthday."

  • "I went here for Valentine's Day Dinner... The decor reminded me of a Chicago speakeasy... lots of wood & leather... sizable room and a very nice, very large bar... I enjoyed it very much... Great place for dinner before taking in a show or other event at the KY Center for the Arts..."

  • "I had been wanting to visit SCE since seeing it under construction a couple of years ago. It's lovely. We were late for our reservation (we did call to warn them), and the restaurant was very understanding. Our waiter was nice, but slow to bring our checks, and we had to ask for bread even after he had brought bread plates and knives. My onion soup was nothing special, especially at $12. My pork chop, however, was delicious and tender and the sauce was great, too. I had to search for the spaetzle under the frisee, but everything was good. My husband enjoyed his salad and Steak Oscar. I didn't note my birthday on my reservation, but had mentioned it in a Facebook message and nothing was done, but I could have mentioned it that night I guess."

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant with an amazing old bar. This is the second time I've been here and both times the service and drinks were excellent, one of the best old fashioned I've ever had. The food was good, but for the price I expected to be a little more wowed. Overall a great experience and I would recommend this place for a drink at the bar or a special occasion for dinner."

  • "We ate at St Charles Exchange for our anniversary Saturday night. The bar is one of the coolest in the city. The cocktail list is very interesting and bartenders can really sling the drinks. The service and food were excellent as well."

  • "We've been in to St Charles several times, and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves each time. For Valentine's Day, there was a special menu as well as an optional treat of a bottle of Veuve Cliquot and a dozen roses. Great attention to detail and great service has been a hallmark each time; this is why St Charles is one of our top 3 "go to" restaurants here in Louisville."

  • "I thought the drinks and apps were excellent. Love the building. Love the atmosphere. The entrees were good, but I feel overpriced. I got the lamb and my husband had the duck special. He agreed with me about his meal being overpriced as well. I am not a big salt person, but my lamb needed more salt and being that it is fine dining, there is no salt on the table as the food is usually seasoned well. I think either the prices should be cut or improve the flavors. We had the bourban cake as well which was also underwhelming. Would have given 3.5 starts for overall if I could have."

  • "This was my second dinner at St Charles Exchange. This visit was equally as enjoyable as the first. Great cocktails ( I started with the Airmail ). Our app was the daily selection of Deviled Eggs and they were great. My husband had the Oxtail Parpadelle and I had the Duroc Porkchop. They were both delicious. After our server told us the desserts available there was no way we were passing up the Carmel Italian Creme Cake. We were both drooling it was so good. The only critique I would give this restaurant is that they do not offer draught beer, they only offer bottles and cans."

  • "Great food and good service. While the beer list was a little sparse the bouton list was huge, as that's what the are more known for. We happened to go on half price bottled wine night which was a. Awesome deal as their wines were priced well to begin with. Definitely try the Elvis on Horseback; may sound odd at first but so tasty!"

  • "We had a party of 6 and enjoyed the 4 course NYE dinner special. The service was perfect. The food and portion sizes were great and the vegitarian options were delicious and rich and very filling. The care taken with preparation and presentation as well as the personal descriptions of the items when they are brought out is not like any other place I have been. We stayed at 21C across the street, but the highlight of our celebration was the dinner at SCE."

  • "With its wood paneling, tile floor and long bar, St. Charles Exchange has an old fashioned ambience. The bar tenders are the real gems of the spot. We were in over two nights and they provided above and beyond friendly service and remembered the drinks we had the night before. We'll be back."

  • "Beautiful Bar...very good vibe. Food. Well, really small beef filet for 30+ and I travel a lot. Cooked ok, but not much bang for the buck. Don't mind at all paying a premium if the food it good. If the food ever matches the décor and the ambiance...this place would be over the top."

  • "Wish I would have heard of St Charles Exchange earlier. Ran accross it in a Louisville dining magazine. Split the Elvis on Horseback, Kentucky Onion Soup, and Burger with my wife. Was very good. Service was execellent. North Coast Pilsner was a good beer as well. Would had loved to have a few options of beer on tap but that is not a show stopper. Will be back soon to see if the second visit is as good as the first."

  • "Just ok. We ordered burger and shortribs and shared a side of brussel sprouts. Shortribs were fine but nothing special. After much discussion about how my $18 wagyu burger would be pink in the middle if I ordered it medium rare which is what I wanted, got a well done burger that was dry and fell apart. Our side of brussel sprouts was very, very underdone. Wine prices are really high. Many other more interesting options in the area for the money."

  • "This was a beautiful building with an impressive entrance and seating area. The atmosphere was rich and old world with a contemporary flair. The service impeccable, as obviously there is a good reason to be proud. The food was unique and delicious...sure to impress even the most critical of foodies! The bar area is also worth mentioning as it's large and lively with plenty of seating and a top shelf liquor collection. There is also a lounge seating section just alongside the bar for those wanting to sip cocktails in a more relaxing manner. This restaurant is not to be missed!"

  • "My second visit and I'm hooked. The food is excellent. Very gourmet and unique. I had the gnocchi and my husband had the salmon. It was light snd flavorful. The salmon fresh and cooked to perfecto. The date wrapped bacon appetizer is a must try. Sweet and sumptuous. The restaurant has character and the decor is perfect."

  • "This was my fourth visit to St. Charles Exchange. The food and signature cocktails have been consistently great, perhaps moreso than anywhere else I've been. The service has been nearly equal to it, and of course it is a beautiful apace."

  • "This was my third time at St. Charles and my experience was not as favorable as in the past. Service was uneven. When I asked for a 2nd beer, the waiter disappeared and didn't come back. Had to flag down another waiter and found out they were out of what I ordered. Took about 5 more minutes to get another. We had the cheese plate which was spectacular. My salmon was good, but not remarkable. My colleagues Waygu burger was reported to be very good. Chalked it up to an slow off night."
