Diner Reviews
  • "Bar is downstairs but we ate upstairs....nice and quiet and great food."

  • "Always easier to write a critical review fueled by annoyance or irritation. I've had to think a bit about my experience at Andrews because with one exception it was an excellent dining experience. Limited but good selection of beer which included a couple favorite porters/stoudts. Main courses were very tasty - Scottish salmon with wild mushrooms and scallops with coucous. Staff was attentive and aware of the noise generated by one group in our small room and moved them to their own space (that was the one challenge to the dining experience). Expense? Nothing unusual. A great time for the first evening of our stay."

  • "We came for a pre-theater lunch and were surprised by all the activity. It was the day of the parade and St. Andrews was "the" gathering spot. Even though crowded, out service was excellent and the lunch was delicious, consisting of Haggis, (of course), Fish & Chips, and Shepherds Pie. The Scotch menu is awesome."

  • "Friendly bar-restaurant in the theater district. Very good food and an incredibly large scotch list. Probably the largest in NYC."

  • "This is my second time here. I requested a quiet table upstairs, near a window, when I made my reservation. We were given exactly that. The service was friendly and efficient, the food was excellent, and our table was quiet enough that we could have a conversation without screaming. As we were leaving we saw the bar and other rooms were packed with a higher noise level, and I am grateful that they have little nook and cranny rooms for people of "a certain age", who prefer quiet during dinner. I will most certainly keep St Andrews on the top of the list any time I'm going to the theater."

  • "This is an excellent restaurant for small reunions. The staff doesn't glare at you to leave right after you're done with eating. The salmon sandwich is soooo yummy!!! Highly recommended!!"

  • "We eat here every time we are in this neighborhood. It's got a really varied menu and everything we've tried is terrific. I recommend this to everyone going to the theater. For people who drive in, there is even a parking lot next door. Makes everything stress less."

  • "A good pre-theater choice. Good food & service. In & out in a timely way but not rushed!"

  • "It was a fine experience before the Wednesday matinee. The menu was varied and moderate in price. We would definitely return."

  • "Noise from the bar downstairs was very loud, even when we arrived which was early (5 pm), so we chose to be seated upstairs. Servers were generally efficient, pleasant and helpful but getting a 2nd round of drinks required multiple requests to 3 different servers. I ordered a "Simply Grilled" fish. Apparently, grilled fish is not "simple" for St Andrews. My salmon was overdone & dry -- I guess they hope the sauce will camouflage the kitchen's lack of skill cooking the fish. And the size of the fish fillet was small for $26. My husband had Shepherd's Pie, which was salty but passable. We didn't complain at the restaurant because we really felt this was their best effort & our expectations had just exceeded their level of expertise."

  • "The food was fantastic, as usual. I enjoyed a relaxing pre theatre meal with 3 friends. We were never rushed and we had allowed a 2 hour window for dinner. I had requested a table near the window which we got. Our waiter was pleasant, informative, always kept our water glasses filled and the food was great. I have eaten in this resturant previously and had been informed of the great meals by my brother who used to work on Wall Street back in the day."

  • "This was our first time to St Andrew and it won't be our last. Fun atmosphere with international clientele; great service; and delish food that was served promptly and prepared perfectly."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We enjoyed a delicious pre- matinee lunch at St. Andrews....just 2 blocks from our theater destination. The restaurant opened early -11:30 AM - so we didn't have to wait outside in the winter weather."

  • "always reliable. a hoot to see the waiters in kilts - not always their best look!"
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "We have found St. Andrew's to be a great spot for pre-theater dining. Great choices of seafood in the upstairs restaurant and a very welcoming bar downstairs if you are meeting a party of people and they show up at different times."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "The location is great if you are going to a play. The food is moderately priced and good for Manhattan. Unfortunately, the service is terrible and haphazard. Dishes not arriving; having to ask for desert and coffee so we would not miss our show; dinner dishes not removed before desert was served; not being able to find our waiter; no spoon with soup; small pitcher of milk for 5 coffees; just really bad and marred an otherwise pleasant evening."

  • "St. Andrews is a scottish oasis in NYC. The food is good, they have a vast array of whiskeys, excellent beer is on tap and the service is friendly. It is a great spot for a pub-style lunch or dinner. Do not expect a transformative dining experience. If you are looking for a solid, congenial meal, you will not be disappointed."

  • "Tasked to find a steakhouse for work group, something close to our Times Sq. Hotel. We couldn't afford any true steakhouse with our per diem but whenI searched steakhouses on Open Table this came up. Rib eye was not good. It was tough and looked like something I cooked myself . Fillet was cooked "just as ordered medium rare" but wasn't outstanding. Chicken was good. vinaigrette dressing on salad was delicious. butterscotch cookie dessert was good but had zero butterscotch, just vanilla beer & scotch list is extensive. Downstairs bar was hopping, the dining room quaint. Overall, the restaurant met our needs but I wouldn't classify it as steakhouse. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Hispanic kilted waiters serving in a Scottish-themed restaurant"

  • "While the decor is really nice I have tried this resto for lunch 3x and found the food mediocre at best. The waitstaff is friendly but the kitchen really needs some direction."

  • "We are always happy when we choose St. Andrew's. Great value, great food, great service. The Buffalo calamari was outstanding as was the grilled salmon with roasted cauliflower. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Went with a group of 10. They sat us in a nice spot and were accommodating. Waitress was very friendly. Food took a long time to come. And when it did, they would bring out three plates at a time. It took about 10 to 15 minutes from the time the first three plates were brought unitl the last four were brought. Not so great. Lucky we were not in a rush. The food is fine and we enjoyed ourselves."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Second floor ambience was very nice. Service was good but quality of food was inconsistent. 2 of the 4 dinners were served cold. Best to stick with pub type food here."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "We had a great time here. A great restaurant by the heart of Times Square. Great service good food and a quiet environment where you can easily have a conversation. It was one of those great finds you happen to stumble across and you don't regret it in the long run. And I will make sure to visit again."

  • "St. Andrews is a restaurant with a dual personality. It has a lively, well-stocked bar on the ground level, while upstairs is a restaurant with lofty ambitions, that very much succeeds. There are many nice choices on the menu, including multiple fish dishes with interesting preparations (hazelnut crusts, chorizo toppings, or just plain grilled), prime rib and delicious fall-off-the-bone pork ribs, which was my choice, and authentic Scottish dishes. I think this is a restaurant well worth a try."

  • "We were very early for reservations and the hostess greeted us and said there was no problem being seated early. Our waitress ,young, was the most pleasant young lady. She was just great. Anything we asked for was " sure of course".we ordered from the fixed menu with unlimited beer and wine. Definitely worth it. We ordered the strip steak and asparagus and it was delicious. Great food great service. Keep it up st. andrews ! Next time we visit ny we will eat here again."

  • "We like the fact that we were given a secluded table upstairs as we had requested and were able to have a quiet conversation over our lunch."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "At one time St. Andrews had amazing scotch and pretty good food. In this last visit the amazing scotch was still there, the service was pretty good but the food was well below average. Canned mushrooms, frozen cauliflower, overcooked food. Pretty miserable experience overall. Looks like they have gone to reheating frozen foods...Dirty tablecloths covered with a fresh one...We were in the upstairs for a prime time dinner on a Saturday night...maybe 30 open tables...maybe 12 people upstairs the entire time. The bar on the first floor was maybe half full and had a better vibe but the food would still have been below average. Nothing stays the same...would not go back except for drinks."

  • "Loved the quiet niche where we were seated. Our waitress, Elizabeth, was excellent and very friendly. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and the various beers on tap. The Filet Mignon was superb as well as the Pan-Seared Salmon. Looking forward to dining here again."

  • "I can put it into two words "fancy pub" It's not a special occasion type of place, hanging out for sure!"
    Dined on 2/4/2014
  • "The hostess who seated us was very friendly. She seated us with care to make sure we had a great view of the game. As the game began, the crowd was thin, and by the fourth quarter the bar was about half full. We ordered sandwiches that were more than enough for dinner. I had a sirloin steak sandwich and it was great. My husband had a cheeseburger that he said was wonderful. As the game progressed, a nice couple from Florida (Great Britain accents) chatted with us. It was a really nice evening."

  • "I picked this restaurant out because it was close to the Lunt Fontaine theatre. I ordered the steak medium, however, it came out medium well and unseasoned. I never had to put salt on a steak before so this was the first time. My friend also ordered the Ny Strip and he had the same experience I had. Bland, boring steak. The mashed potatoes were good. My wife ordered the salmon which she seem to enjoy very much. The service was terrific and when I told the waitress we needed to be out to make a 7:30pm show, she accommodated us. My wife and I ordered from the restaurant's prix-fix menu at $38 for my steak dinner and $33 for her salmon dinner, yet after 4 drinks, the bill came to nearly $120 (I left about $160 because my waitress was awesome.)"

  • "We had a party - and we weren't sure how many people were going to show up, and they were very accommodating. The food was really fresh and good, and wow, what a scotch collection."

  • "We hosted my son's pre-theater 14th birthday dinner at St. Andrews. We brought a party of nine, ordered wine, and three courses. Although we arrived punctually at 5:30, the place was busy. I thought that was a good sign. Our table was terrible, though I had booked in advance. We were sandwiched in between a noisy bus station and the door to the front room. We were in a hallway. Despite the constant traffic of staff walking past our table, service was terribly slow. It took more than two hours to eat. We had to rush to the theater. The comfort food was perfect for teenagers, steaks and simple fish. The service was so bad it ruined the entire experience for me. I would never go back."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "we had heard that the restaurant had a wonderul fireplace area that was warm and cozy. the night we attended we were seated on the second floor, near the windows so we overlooked the street area, and no fire was blazing in the fireplace that was near the rear of the second floor seating area. we were so disappointed."

  • "Separate menus for bar and restaurant. Bar menu may suit you better so ask first."

  • "Good steak, not great however. Waitress was not knowledgeable about the menu unfortunately and preparation was incorrect (all medium rare orders came out medium). Still good food though."

  • "Went to this restaurant primarily for proximity to the Cort Theater. Wasn't expecting much more than pub food, but it was quite good with very efficient service. Horseradish encrusted salmon great. Would come back!"

  • "We dined early, pre-theater. The restaurant was nearly empty and remained that way as I learned that it was being taken over for an event later that night. Everyone that was there was seated the furthest distance from the front door, all next to each other. It was hot. It took several request to get the AC turned on to cool the space down. On the other hand the server was very pleasant and helpful. The food was very good. The whisky selection was excellent."

  • "You must read the history of the kilt which is framed on the wall in the bar area! I wanted a place for dinner after a matinee, for family of 11. We arrived about 4:45 for 5:30 reservation (Upstairs, per other reviews suggesting this). The hostess was gracious and despite our early arrival, immediately arranged to have our table set up. The Scottish theme was fun, especially for the golfers in the party, and by the time we finished looking around downstairs, our table was ready. Server was competent and knowledgeable; the 5 kids (12 to 16) preferred the bar menu, the adults tried a variety. The TOFFEE PUDDING was a hit. We were finished before the music started at 9, so can't comment on it, or the bar scene. Would go back again."
