Diner Reviews
  • "We went to SqWire's for a Bachelorette party. The entire wedding party is from Saint Louis, but has recently moved to the East Coast. Needless to say, we plan on going back the next time we are in Saint Louis! The service was beyond excellent, and the menu had a wide variety... but not too many choices to make you feel overwhelmed! (I had the Chicken Pot Pie and it was delicious!) The ambiance was outstanding, and the live musician was great. They had a lovely outdoor seating area, although we did not get to sit there. Overall, I think this restaurant is great and I will recommend to St. Louisans and out-of-towners alike!"

  • "The whole staff was very nice and accommodating and the experience as a whole was great and will definitely try this place again. Only negative was that our server was a not as attentive to my table as he was to his other tables, and was not as friendly. Not going to guess why that was bc I get the fact that people get busy or they just have better rapport with others; all good... Especially since the rest of the restaurant staff made up for our server's lack of."

  • "Even though the place wasn't packed, our service (from time to order to when we received our appetizer or meal) was extremely slow. One of our drinks came in a dirty glass and another (Bloody Mary) was so bad my wife asked for something else, and it turns out we were still charged for it. Two of our four meals (ahi tuna and chicken pot pie) were very good. The diner who had the shrimp and grits barely ate any of it (although I tried the shrimp and they were a nice size and tasty). The big disappointment was the salmon. Although it was hot, it had no taste and was very dry. This was my first visit to SqWires, and will be probably be my last."

  • "I wonder if they were short staffed the night we dined. We waited about 15 minutes for our drink orders to arrive and then another 15 minutes to take our order. We ordered our appetizer and entrees at the same time due to the wait. After about 30 minutes our entrees arrived before our appetizer. The wait staff was apologetic and we were able to return the appetizer. The food was good but not exceptional. We will not be going back the next time we are in the Lafayette Square area."

  • "We still love the setting. We have gone there five or more times in the past couple of years. The food seems to be less exciting - sometimes great, sometimes not. This time in my beans and rice the tomatoes were awful and there was very little seasoning. The spinach salad was good. With multiple servers we had to rearrange both salad and main plates as the servers couldn't keep it straight. With so many new places opening up Sqwires needs to kick it up a notch and pay attention to details."

  • "met friends for a sunday brunch. my entree, the waffle with ham, to me was too heavy on the ham...very salty. would order something next time. loved the bloody mary bar. want to come back in warm weather to take advantage of the outdoor seating and want to try the dinner menu. its a lovely area of st. louis. can't wait to bring my adult kids here. great slim jims and bacon!!!!"

  • "I found the food quite good. The meat was just slightly a little drier than expected. However everything tasted good. There was a good beer and wine selection. The room had an intimate feel and was very nice. The service was impeccable. We never had to wait for drink refills."

  • "My husband and I took an out-of-town guest to Sqwires for dinner on Saturday night. It took over 10 minutes for someone to even greet us at our table. Our waitress was overextended and the restaurant seemed very short-handed the entire evening. Service was poor, rushed, and our waitress seemed visibly annoyed whenever nearby tables requested anything of her. In her defense, it was clear she had entirely too many tables to handle on her own. She seemed stressed, which made our experience stressful as well. I was embarrassed that we chose this restaurant to treat our guest. I thought it would be lovely for her to see Lafayette Square and the overall restaurant concept of Sqwires. First impressions are important--we will likely not return."

  • "Terrible service and it was brought to the managers attention. He really did nothing. Two diners, a soup and salad ordered for each diner and they came out seperately, about 15 minutes apart. The water glasses not filled, dishes left on the table and the waitress was asked to remove them. Wine forgotten - had to go to the bar. Just told they were busy - well duh, you're a restaurant that has been in business for over 13 years so you should know what busy is."

  • "My dining partner ordered fish tacos which he thought were tasteless. Only one of the two served had sauce. Our server took our order, dropped off water and never came back. When trying to order a drink, I asked another server to come by. She did not return. I finally had to ask the hostess to find her. When she did return she was surly and rude. We decided to move on to somewhere else for coffee and dessert."

  • "We have been to Squires many times over the years, but now we seem to be fondly remembering the past. The meal we had this past Saturday was just not nearly as good as we have had here in the past. The seared tuna I had was tasteless and rubbery (obviously frozen), my wife's "strip steak" seemed more like a nameless cut from a chain restaurant, and cooked way past the medium rare she had requested. Too bad, we really like the area and the ambiance of this restaurant. If we come back again, it will just be for drinks and maybe an app."

  • "Very nice flavor on the meatloaf potatoes and vegetables. My wife's sirloin was very good as well. Good beer selection. Atmosphere was fun in the old wire mill. I would definitely recommend it to others."

  • "Sqwires is one of our favorites. We don't live in St. Louis so it is an effort for us to visit Sqwires but we love it so much that we try to go a couple of times a year. We love the meatloaf but have enjoyed other menu items as well. At our most recent visit, my husband had the meatloaf and I had the black beans and rice. We shared the quinoa salad. Beer selections and wine have always been good. We sat at the bar but always love sitting by the fireplace. Reservations are needed."

  • "We ordered a salad, two appetizers, two meals, and the house Chardonnay. Everything was uniquely prepared and tasted wonderful! Their creativity is stupendous. Three cheers for the chef! A lunchtime delight on a cold Valentine's Day."

  • "Took three of my friends for birthday lunch as I had raved about food at Sqwires . Food was not up to previous standards my guests were not impressed. Potato chips tasted like they had been cooked in day old fat, We were never offered desert and I had put in reservation comments that this was a birthday lunch for one of my guests. We were not looking for free dessert but some recognition of the birthday and opportunity to order dessert."

  • "I went to Sqwires for the first time with my friends for brunch this past weekend. I recommend making a reservation. This restaurant is very busy. The servers always made sure my coffee and water were full. The food was very delicious. However, one of my friend's food came out cold. They quickly took her plate back to the kitchen and brought her a new warmer version of what she ordered. I was told that my reservation overlapped with a 12 pm reservation but never felt rushed. It did take longer than expected to get us an extra chair for another friend. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and would come back."

  • "Not bad service...just indifferent. We had to wait for her and/or flag her down. Men's rest room was a mess. No excuse for that. Good food. Whole place needs more polish. I won't go back. Too many better places."

  • "I am giving "service" just one star because the waiter spilled an entire large diet coke (with ice) on my husband's lap when we were first seated and prior to us even ordering our food. It was an accident, but knowing that didn't make my husband any less uncomfortable. His jeans were soaked through and he was cold and miserable. Not an ideal dining experience for my husband or for any of us at the table, for that matter. It would have been nice if the waiter would have at least offered my husband's meal "on the house"."

  • "I hosted some team members at Sqwires and the menu has something for everyone. They have a great Happy Hour menu and the wines on special are actually quite drinkable, something I've not found at other places. The space is really nice and if it is cold outside, the best spot is by the fireplace. The music was a little loud & it made it difficult to have a conversation across the table. The mushroom & chevre appetizer is delicious and share-able and everything I've ever ordered during my visits has been nicely prepared. There is a good drinks menu and Sqwires has many special menus for food at different times. Service can be a bit uneven; I have had excellent service down to rather inexperienced service."

  • "This was my fifth or sixth time to eat at SqWires. I have always had good food and enjoy going there. However on 11/26 they must have had the "B-team" working. Service was very slow and waiter was not familiar with the menu. The bartender was terrible - -messed up several cocktails, and then did not have the glass of wine I ordered. - which took them 15 minutes to tell me. If this was my first visit it would have been my last. I will recommend SqWires based on other meals there. And hope the service issues are resolved before the next time I go there."

  • "My friends and I tried to eat here before heading to an event. We waited an hour and 25 minutes for our food and when it arrived it was cold. We couldn't send our food back because we were already running late, so we left hungry and upset. I have been a fairly frequent customer for several years and received less than stellar service before. Needless to say, we will not return."

  • "My group of 10 meets once a month and this month we had 4 birthdays. I called to see if we were welcome to stay late for a 1.5 hour meeting and if they had birthday cake. I was told they used two local bakeries that I could pay for at the time of our luncheon and with just my information about how many to serve and that it should be chocolate, they provided a delicious cake from one of the best cake bakeries in St. Louis. It was painless planning for me and we were well received for the afternoon. Everyone enjoyed their entrees, of various kinds. We'll be back!"

  • "My party was seated at a table near the door, so all of the overflow crowd was bumping against us throughout the meal. There did not appear to be enough servers to accommodate the crowd. A member of my party asked for an English muffin with his omelet but none came. I've had better experiences here previously, but the last two dining experiences were less than stellar. It would hVe to be something special to draw me back,as there are lots of places to have Sunday brunch."

  • "This was our first visit. The atmosphere was interesting and fun; the wood burning fireplace was an added pleasure. Servers were friendly, informative, and courteous. The menu had a good variety and interesting/different items from other restaurants which we truly enjoyed. Our waiter also offered suggestions which were helpful. A good time was had by all. We will definitely return and bring some friends with us."

  • "We hadn't been to Sqwire's for a few years, but wanted to give it a try after we stopped in with some friends after a wedding for a drink. Started off with a great wild mushroom appetizer and finished with an awesome salmon dish. We really enjoyed the live entertainment. I believe her name is Jessi and she added to our wonderful experience. We will be back!"

  • "There was so many interesting choices on both the regular and the "specials" menu that it was very hard to make a selection. There were 7 people at dinner, and each of us ordered a different dish and table ordered three appetizers. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Appropriate portion sizes and beautifully served. We had a wonderful evening and we will be back."

  • "We went there after a crowded Cardinals game -- we had reservations but at 6:45 it wasn't too crowded for a Saturday night. The food was excellent - I had the ratatouille and my husband had the rainbow trout. The kids pizza was large (10 inch?) .... I will go back."

  • "We have eaten at Sqwires many times. The food and service is always exceptional. The weekend brunch and bloody mary bar are not to be missed. Many restaurants claim to be dog friendly but are anything but. Sqwires is REALLY dog friendly."

  • "SqWires has good ambience with its decor remaining true to the original factory occupying the building. Try the braised short ribs - a wonderful, fork-tender, perfectly seasoned piece of beef served with a savory mushroom bread pudding soaking in an herb flavored sauce. It was excellent. A group was playing and singing music that could be related to by many generations. The oldest person in our group is 92 - she enjoyed the music as much as the younger people sitting near us - a rare thing these days.."
