An intimate urban pub in Belltown. Plates to share. Cocktails to entice.

Chefs Brian McCracken and Dana Tough opened Spur in Seattle’s Belltown in 2008 and already it’s been recognized by Food & Wine magazine as one of the country’s top restaurants. Acknowledged for turning out some of the best dishes and cocktails in town by local media, the Chefs were selected as "Rising Star Chefs" nationally by the industry insider magazine StarChefs. In addition to earning the attention of Wine & Spirits magazine, their cocktails have made Spur one of Seattle’s top 10 bars.

The Chefs’ collaboration dates back to their time in the kitchen at Maria Hines’ Earth and Ocean restaurant, together on Hines’ traveling team at the 2005 James Beard Dinner in New York, and today creating their menus at Spur.

  • "Spur's menu, service, and atmosphere for a dinner during Restaurant Week was top-notch. "

  • "I've been here for drinks a few times and that experience was fantastic. The bar is intimate, staff is super friendly, and the cocktails are superb. I heard the food was really good, but when I went here for restaurant week, I was a bit disappointed. First of all, they got rid of happy hour which is a total bummer. And the food portions are really small. My plate of pasta barely left me satisfied. There was a marked use of gels and foam which I'm not a fan off since they lack real body and add almost zero flavor. I felt like something cool was going to happen, but it didn't. Should have gotten the burger."

  • "Had a very nice meal as a solo diner at Spur. The food was an experience and the flavor combinations fantastic."

  • "So my friend Kevin's girlfriend was out of town for a few weeks and it happened to coincide with Seattle Restaurant Week, so I picked this restaurant for the two of us to have dinner and catch up. The pre-fix menu offered three starters, three entrees, and two desserts from which to choose. In short, the food was excellent, but they brought me the wrong starter AND entree. The waitress realized this and said she comped our drinks. Then when the bill came, our drinks were still on there. The service was just laughably bad, but the food was excellent."

  • "I absolutely loved the whimsical approach to the food. Not only was it delicious, but it was beautiful to look at. I've been to a lot of restaurants where the food was pretty, but not tasty. This is NOT at all like that; the food was fantastic and artsy. I am definitely coming back"

  • "After driving 5 hours from the southeastern corner of Washington to Seattle, this is where we start each visit. The food is very well prepared and exciting--plus we can walk over from our hotel. I have medical/dietary restriction; the kitchen and wait staff are very careful to observe them. Already looking forward to our next meal."

  • "The food was wonderful - tasty and artfully presented. It was, however, nearly impossible to have a conversation with my lovely date. So, if you know ASL, this is the place for you. Otherwise, go during an off hour I suppose. Bob"

  • "The restaurant was perhaps less than 1/3 full midweek night and you would have expected to be able to carry on a conversation with the people sitting across the table. However there were a group of about 6 sitting at a nearby table that just drank all night long, totally oblivious that their loud talking and howls of laughter were really annoying. It is a very small restaurant with no where to move. I also did not appreciate that young men were standing in the open city metered parking spots across from the restaurant and to use the spot, you had to give them money to move out of the way or force your way in. I would say our wine selection and the beef were outstanding and outshined Ruth Chris and Mortons."

  • "Took my husb for a birthday dinner and was not disappointed that I decided on this (of the many, many other candidates) as the destination to celebrate his impending oldness. The five course tasting menu was fantastic. Between the two of us we tried all of the savory options, and each was delectable. I think the star of the my meal was the sous vide Wagyu dish (main course) as well as the chicken liver terrine. Actually, the sweetbreads and venison tartar were also delectable. My pescetarian birthday boy was quite taken by the arctic char, the big eye tuna , and the desert. The cocktail pairing (we both went with that) is highly recommended. Why "almost flawless", you ask? A few tiny service snags, is all. Overall, an amazing experience!"

  • "From the moment we walked in, Spur was incredible. The servers were attentive, and the food and cocktails are not to be missed. Standouts are the maple old fashioned, venison tartar and wag you beef. Worth every penny!"

  • "If you want truly well-made and interesting cocktails and a meal that will linger in your mind, I highly recommend Spur. It's small and maybe a little noisy, but it's a Gastropub not a typical (or boring) restaurant. The cocktail menu has seasonal offerings that will open your mind and please all the senses. No fru-fru girly drinks here, bartenders think like chefs. Serious craft going on. The menu makes you want to try something new and rewards your willingness to take a tiny gamble. I'm not a dessert eater, but I was drawn to one item that I cannot stop thinking about: pear sorbet, jasmine sponge cake and "leatherwood honey" meringue. Wow! I wish the entrees were just a little bigger, but the flavors are so good it's still worth it."

  • "Small delicious plates with wonderfully seasoned interesting and unique combinations of ingredients. Servings were nicely paced, with attentive and friendly staff. Seating is rather tight, and decor and lighting a bit dark but still a pleasant and intimate atmosphere. Will definitely return. Despite complaints of price for small servings, two of us had a satisfying meal with five plates, desserts, coffees, and still came in at about $100. Definitely worth it. The homemade tagliatelle was perfectly cooked and sauced. Pork cheeks meltingly tender. Everything just worked food wise for us."

  • "My sweetheart treated me to a Valentine's Day dinner here - he knows it's my favorite place! Tonight I had the seasonal Big Eye Tuna. Raw ahi sashimi with foie gras that spreads on it like fine butter, celery and clementine to perk up the otherwise-savory dish. It was divine. It still hasn't taken the place of my perennial favorite, the wagyu sirloin, but I could have it nightly! We ended our night with the cheese platter, which was delicious. Two small nuisances couldn't ruin the perfect evening for me: I wish there had been more crackers to compliment the cheeses, and my favorite house drink, the Empress, no longer comes with grapefruit foam! Bummer - it really needs the citrus to round it out. Thanks for another fantastic evening, Spur!"

  • "Fabulous Valentine's Day dinner - fixed menu, but great flexibility with special requests. And excellent, interesting wine pairings for all of the dishes."

  • "The last time I dined at Spur I was incredibly impressed by the food - beautifully intricate flavors handled with delicate care. Back again after two years and the food did not disappoint. The restaurant itself could use a bit more space between tables and an update to make it a little less drab, but it's really well worth the trip."

  • "I was one of a party of four we ordered the 5 course tasting menu. I literally felt like I was a judge on iron chef. The food was beautifully presented, very different and tasty. The wait staff was helpful extremely knowledgable about the menu and drinks. The liver terrine which I was a little reluctant about melted in my mouth deliciously. The food combinations in one dish were unusual and always surprisingly delicious. I loved my experience at spur and would love to return. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is that it was a little chilly in the restaurant and while the candles on the table added to the ambiance it was poorly lit making it hard to read the menues."

  • "It was a cute, trendy place but my... I wasn't prepared for the prices. $10 beer and a "gastropub" with only three beers on tap? $15 glass of wine? We didn't stay for dinner because it was out of our price range. I should have read the menu before we came. My bad. The waitstaff were great and the atmosphere very fun."

  • "Great service, ambiance and food! Portions are small and pricey but so excellent. This is a restaurant to savor your food and enjoy the experience. Our favorites were the venison tartare and the salmon crostini. We will be back."

  • "We had a number of plates and a dessert and while everything was nicely prepared and presented, there was nothing that made us say "ooh, that tastes really good--you should try this". Generally the flavors just didn't work together well (like the chorizo appetizer where the chorizo flavor overwhelmed everything else, and the yogurt sauce did nothing to complement it), or were too bland (the pork cheeks were flavorless and the sauce was very mild), and there were even some odd textures like the shaved goat milk ice on the beet salad which just made it feel like the lettuce was pulled out of the freezer. The chocolate toffee butterscotch dessert was very crumbly and lacked cohesion of flavor too. The meal overall was unsatisfying."

  • "The hamburger is one of the best in the city. Other menu items range from above average to disappointing. Food is a bit pricey, so key to get your order right. Good cocktail list with interesting beers on tap."

  • "We have been disappointed with several of the more highly rated new restaurants in Seattle, but Spur was not a disappointment at all. We found the food to be consistently good, the wine list excellent - especially the wines available by the glass. The atmosphere was comfortable, with music we enjoyed while still being able to have a conversation. The service was friendly, efficient and helpful."

  • "The food at Spur was exceptional. I loved the salmon canapé and the Wagyu sirloin was phenomenal. It was pretty fancy to be called a gastro pub and it was really tight, however, I would highly reccomend this place. The quality of the food and preparation was outstanding for the price."

  • "We went to Spur with a group of 8 - each of us had a different price range we were interested in, and we were happy that everyone had an amazing meal regardless of how much they wanted to spend. The service was very attentive, and they were sensitive to the fact that we had a show to run to after we ate. We will definitely return."

  • "Picture a long, narrow room, half of one side taken up by the bar, half of the other taken up by communal tables. It was not full when we were there and it was very pleasant: a quiet place for intimate conversation. The food was excellently prepared: the chicken liver terrine was sinfully rich and good; all the other dishes showed real care in their design and in their preparation. The portions tend to the small; each item is a small plate for one or a couple of bites if more than one are sharing. Prices are fair for the quality they deliver, but enough plates to make a really filling meal becomes an expensive meal. Service was attentive and helpful with information about the dishes."

  • "We chose Spur Gastropub, as it was a "must try" on so many Seattle restaurant lists. We were not disappointed. A foodie heaven and wonderful for close friends who want to enjoy conversation. The food is primarily for shaing, with about one or two bites per dish, per person, for a group of four. Small portions, but incredible and surprising flavors. We had a few "pickier eaters" and they loved it all (especially dessert, which was beyond amazing.) Each dish is beautifully crafted and prepared. And like fine artwork it is also a little more pricey. If you can appreciate it, you will find it well worth it. Expert servers/bartenders/mixologists, who seem to know what you would like, even if you are unsure. We had an absolutely wonderful time."

  • "We had the tasting menu with matching cocktails. The matching was excellent. The best food I've ever had in a restaurant and I have been almost everywhere in Seattle and in many excellent restaurants worldwide. This was my third time in Spur, but this was better than before. So, it might have had something to do with our mood, or the palettes, which do not get exposed to too many great flavors in the winter... We'd been eating turkey leftovers for a week (great turkey, though), and the enhancement of the Spur's dishes with touches of fresh jellies and compressed fruits perfectly complementing the main ingredients may have been part of the reason why my mouth felt like the taste buds doubled in number. Outstanding. Going back!"

  • "The service, table, location was real nice. The food was good but not exciting. Looking at the exotic items on their menu I was excited and expected some bold new or uniquely combined flavors but it really didn't happen. We had the pork jowls, wagu, chicory salad maybe I wimped out by not ordering the even more exotic items."

  • "I was visiting Seattle from San Francisco and staying downtown. I found Spur on UrbanSpoon and noticed good reviews, so headed the four blocks that way. It was Friday night, and the restaurant was full but didn't feel crowded. The ambience is amazing, and the staff are incredibly attentive. I sat at the bar and was personally engaged with the bartender(s). And the food!!! It's beautiful and delicious. The salmon crostini is a must-try, as well as their beet salad and any one of their amazing desserts. They also have an incredible cocktail/wine/beer list. I will be going back to Spur!"

  • "Presentation was very good; food was pretty; taste was very good; but, the dishes that should have been hot were, in fact, cold. It seems that everything was plated and then left to sit for a long time. The wait staff tried to compensate...... This place could be very good; nice ambience, etc., but the kitchen isn't quite up to the job."

  • "First visit (Restaurant Week). Service: friendly and attentive. Ambience: captures heart & soul of old Belltown. The dishes were modern & inventive--looked like Alexander Calder had prepared them--intriguing designs and color. The sunchoke soup was to-die-for delicious w/ brown butter, creme fraiche and pears--the perfect mix of complex flavors. The trout w/ celery root (+ other "things"--always this complex melding of flavors & textures) was savored, as was the similarly inventive dessert. Unusual wine was recommended--and constituted a perfect match. The courses were not small & insignificant, but well-sized. We were not hurried. My dining partner (chef /foodie) returned to the east coast as a man impressed with Seattle cuisine."

  • "One of the best meals I've had in Seattle. The smoked butterfish with charred eggplant and fennel was amazing. Every dish was wildly creative, colorful and very good. The bread is specially cooked for you and is a small loaf with sea salt on the crust and a dense flavorful slightly doughy center. The dishes are small so you need to order a lot if you are something other than a bird which gets expensive."

  • "This was our second time at Spur. It was everything that our first experience led us to expect. Exquisite food, surprising, interesting and delicious. The tagiatelli was unmatched with the souvide duck egg over deliciousness. Veal sweetbreads could not compete, but were also very nice. Good job well done to the Spur crew. And thanks as well"

  • "Absolutely amazing food - quite possibly the best dinner I've ever had. My only complaint was lackluster service. For such an upscale amazing restaurant I would expect engaged attentive servers who cared about the food. They weren't bad by any stretch, just not up to par with the rest of the restaurant. I would highly recommend for anyone who loves food."

  • "My husband and I went to Spur on the last day of restaurant week and we really enjoyed it. The food was tasty and flavor combination was different.. My husband ordered the pasta dish and it came too salty. We told our waitress and she took it back right away and also took off our wine pairing for us. It's a place with good food and also very friendly service. I have to say the portion is on the small side. So if you are expecting "pub portions", you will not get it here!"
