It was an very impressive restaurant with a positive vibe. Only real downside was the restaurant was bit dark, enough to be a challenge to read the menu.

I have had lunch, dinner and drinks at Spruce in the past. They have a great looking dining room, good service and a great bar area. My last few experiences at lunch have been disappointing. The hamburger was over cooked, the Waldorf salad was a breast of chicken next to lettuce with old tasting dressing, the Cesar salad tasted like just romaine with no dressing or taste---all for hefty prices. They used to have better food for lunch, so hope this gets fixed.

I suspect that Spruce is an awesome place for dinner. I fell in love with the soft deep brown decor the first time I ever saw it at a reception years ago but didn't have the chance to eat there till this past Sunday. Service was lovely and the beignets were out of this world. But my polenta with jidori egg and homemade pastrami and summer squash was way, way too salty. I couldn't finish the pastrami and pushed it to the side as it so fought with the sweetness of the polenta and the rounded deep flavor of the rich golden jidori egg. The potato and duck confit frittata, on the other hand, was bland in comparison. I would love to give this restaurant a try for dinner, but it would not be at the top of my list for Sunday brunch.

My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary at Spruce based on a friend's recommendation and had a wonderful experience. Note, the wine list is extensive. In fact, we were able to order a bottle of Kosta Browne single vineyard Pinot that I have never been able to buy direct although I've been on their allocation list for 7yrs running (made it more fun to drink knowing we wont have it again anytime soon). Additionally, Spruce provided at no charge, two small sample plates (appetizer and dessert) which really highlights their focus on providing an exceptional dining experience. From a menu perspective, strongly recommend the scallops first course..was the star of the meal (outside of the wine).

The prix-fixe menu for lunch is great and totally worth it, I highly recommend to go there for lunch. However, my husband was not pleased with the entree on the menu and therefore had to order plates a la carte. The small quantities for the high prices made us lower the rating from 1 star. Maybe, they should propose an alternative. The place is really nice and service is awesome (totally deserves its 5 stars) !!

Was a lovely evening as always, but should have gone with the recommendation by the waiter of the pork - which my husband had and was delicious. I had the cod and loved the sublte truffle flavor but I am not a fan of yellow and green wax beans - especially when they are squeaking against my teeth. So nothing wrong with dish - just not a personal favorite of mine. Where some people hate broccoli - I dislike beans! They forgot to add the $100 bottle of wine to our bill - which we brought to their attention and they were shocked and appreciative that we did.

This was the second time my husband and I had dinner at Spruce and again, the food was delicious. The restaurant is buzzy without being too noisy and has a nice vibe. The only thing I would change is making the lights a little brighter as it is even hard to read the menu with lotsof people putting the flashight from their phone on to see. The service is very good and seating is comfortable. Everything thing we ordered was delicous and the servings were not too big.

I think having a restaurant that is essentially gourmet American fare in a city as eclectic and ethnic as San Francisco almost immediately puts one at a disadvantage as far providing diners with a memorable experience. I love food from all over the globe and have been fortunate enough to travel and dine in a lot of world class destinations. That said, I think my wife and I came to Spruce not expecting to be impressed to the degree we were. I mean, how GREAT can gourmet American fare be? Spruce delivers on all fronts. The food, service, ambiance, and pace were essentially flawless. The only reason I didn't give them straight 5 stars is there was a very minor lapse in the wine service, but I'm almost just nit picking.

This was the second time dining at Spruce. The food is amazing, the wine list is ok with a marked lack of good California Wines. Each time we've visited the restaurant the waiter commented that he was once a Sommelier and can help with a good wine selection. Great if you have a good selection. The dining room is crowded and we were next to a wall with a table right behind my chair. The waiters constantly bumped into my chair. Not really a big deal but annoying. The food makes the visit to Spruce worth the trip.

I hadn't been to Spruce in a while, maybe a year. But it was a special occasion and I brought a special woman on a lunch date. Our server recognized me somehow from the last time I'd been in. What a nice welcome! From there, we had the perfect time, and the sald, duck confit, and dessert were superb. Cannot beat the service. Just love this place.

wanted to celebrate a friends birthday at a Michelin starred restaurant. We were not disappointed. Our waiter was attentive without being overly solicitous. We had corn soup and scallops to start. The duck, and the black cod for entree. All tasted lovely. We ordered 2 desserts and could have been satisfied with only one. The beignets (8 of them!) were delicious. The chocolate cake was also delicious and a regular portion size. Wine list was extensive, (as well as expensive!) more wines by the glass would have been appreciated, but there was enough to choose from.

The salads were excellent. The bread, a "brioche" was not a brioche but just a puffy white bread roll. The Duck Confit was tough, dry and tasteless. The Rib Eye Steak was under cooked but good. The quality of the food did not warrant the prices.

How on earth did Spruce receive a Michelin star is beyond my grasp. We had a corn soup that tasted like anything but corn. The salad was meh. The black cod was blah. The “Rib-Eye” was a “Filet Mignon” not a shred of marble in the entire steak The cheese plate and ice cream trio were both mediocre at best. I asked for a Grey Goose martini, they said they don’t carry Grey Goose, they said that they have Chopin and I said fine, they served me Stolichnaya. Wine by the glass pours were without any exaggeration no more than 4 oz. Service although very polite was poor. Final bill for lunch two was over $200.00 before gratuity. Needless to say we WON’T be returning.

Have been here twice and on both occasions it has been a great experience. Comfortable dining area conducive to conversation without having to shout. First time there I had the beet salad and duck - all well prepared and delicious. This last time I had the Cesar salad and rib eye - also very well prepared and delicious. Definitely save room for dessert and try the beignets with bittersweet chocolate sauce and creme anglaise. Nice ending to a fantastic meal. Valet parking available, but street parking is generally easy to find.

Great cocktails. Excellent service. The food was good, but not fabulous. They served the ribeye sliced in half lengthwise with the inside facing up on the plate, which was an unusual presentation. It was as if they were trying to hide the exterior. For many people, the exterior on a nicely seared ribeye is the part they look forward to, so this approach did not work for me. Beware of the wine list. It offers an excellent selection of fine wines, but it was a struggle to find a bottle under $200. Nevertheless, I am happy to return to Spruce in the future because I love the swanky atmosphere and outstanding service. I hope to make a better entree selection next time.

Food is excellent without being cutting edge. So noisy, it was difficult to have a normal conversation. The biggest problem was the noise carryover from the bar. A highpoint was the porkloin and porkbelly combination with a beautiful sauce. A number of reasonably priced California wines.

We were celebrating a special Birthday and didn't want to go downtown. What a gem we found. Our experience was amazing. Even though it was a Friday night and busy, we were treated as if we were the only guests. We both ordered different things so we could double our pleasure by sharing. I had the beet salad and the Burrata cheese was so soft and gooey that we will now try to make it at home. We also ordered the pork tenderloin which was done to perfection, and the duck breast that was the most tender, think duck breast I have ever seen. Of course we had to try the beignets after reading the reviews. Wow!! Now we want to go back and try the bar menu.

Two days ago we visited Spruce for the first time and it was one of the nicest dining experiences we have had in years. Spruce is really a beautiful venue - spacious, comfortable understated luxury. The waitress was superb offering to serve splits of the two dishes we each ordered and serve them as four separate courses (at no extra charge). My wife expressed interest in a soup we didn't order and a small cup was served before we started the meal. The food was excellent - plated beautifully on top of the line tableware. Dinner was served at a leisurely pace, so we felt neither rushed nor forgotten. This is a place to return to alone and with friends.
