Spruceterrific evening...!while portions were modest, all the courses we enjoyed were outstanding. i've never seen a Maine lobster so small, but delicious. all-in-all we had a wonderful evening...!6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for wine lovers.Food was outstanding. Wine list by the glass (and bottle) exceptional.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic gastronomic experienceAlmost everything that we ordered was perfection. The one big bummer to our meal was the "field green"salad which was completely radicchio, a very bitter red lettuce. It had sort if a honey dressing to balance out the tartness of the lettuce, but it didn't work. 2 of us ordered it & didn't eat it. The waitress asked what was wrong & we told her. She didn't offer an alternative, nor did she take it off our bill). Nonetheless, I would revisit this place. The halibut was divine. The buratta salad was lovely.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent restaurantA little stuffy. Who wears a suit on Friday for lunch? I still don't know but they eat lunch at Spruce!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMSnn Francisco VacationI think this is the third or forth time at Spruce and would come back again. Never had a bad meal or service here. We had fish this time but every thing is good here.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMearly lunchwe arrived for an early lunch (just before 12:00) and while it was nearly empty when we arrived, it was very busy by the time we left. We enjoyed an amazing soup and a pasta course as well as a half bottle of wine. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. I saw a number of people ordering the burger for lunch, so I'm wondering if they know something I don't.6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMMixed experienceFor such an expensive restaurant we had a mixed experience. The service was amazing, almost over-the-top. The round table was certainly big enough for the 6 of us, but it's so wide and the room so large that it was hard to hear each other at times. The harvest salad came out over-salted - had to send it back. The bavette steak was a mystery. The waiter warned that it would be chewy, but one of us could hardly eat it. We wondered why such a fancy restaurant serves a tough piece of meat when there are more tender cuts available. The pressed chicken was delicious but small portion. The scallop appetizer was fantastic. The desserts were amazing - esp. the lemon pistachio tart. Birthday card and cake appreciated on this special day.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSheer eleganceSpruce never disappoints. The setting is elegant and modern. The fabulous service begins as soon as you arrive. The food is always marvelous. If you want to feel elegant, this is the place.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMWine List : priceyNeed to add larger selection of reasonably priced wines--$100 or less.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperior food, beautifullySuperior food, beautifully presented. Attentive, professional service down to the last detail.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMOur Australian waiter providedOur Australian waiter provided exceptionally warm and attentive service. Gem of a guy. He was one of the highlights of our Spruce visit.
The food was very good. But because the portion sizes are designed to "pace one's satiety", they might come across to some as small. The one exception to this portion size restraint: the banana split dessert. It's a MEAL by itself.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHigh expectations? We ate at Spruce to celebrate birthdays. Service was excellent, food was only so-so. The burger and desserts were the highlights of our visit. Wine list was pretentious and expensive. We won't return to Spruce, there are so many better options in SF.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat fish!Great meal all around but 3 out of 4 of us got fish for our entree and loved it. (3 different dishes). A simple menu with just enough options for everyone. Service was friendly and attentive.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMSpruce on SacramentoFinding a great restaurant by Internet is an iffy proposition. I was looking for convenient location (off to the de Young after lunch), French food (or something like it) and open for lunch. Spruce's good web site answered all those questions admirably. Upon arrival, it was pleasurable to find a professional staff, well versed in menu and wine list, helpful but not intrusive, elegant understated ambience ( I want those gorgeous brown velvet drapes) and excellent food. Sign me up for a second visit!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMSpruce delivers againWe live in LA. 5 years ago my wife threw me a surprise birthday party at Spruce. It was great. 2 years ago we popped in for lunch without a reservation. Again, a wonderful experience. The day before we flew to SF for Memorial Day weekend this year, we realized we hadn't made Friday night dinner plans. At the last minute we were able to get a 5:45 reservation at Spruce. Early? Yes, but happy to get in. They sat us in the private room in back. Just 4 tables. For a while, we were the only party (me, my wife, and our 2 adult sons). At first we felt a little isolated, but the quiet gave us a chance to enjoy conversation. Our server could not have been more knowledgeable or attentive. The food and wine were terrific. Love Spruce.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFish a little blandFantastic service and appetizers--we had the gespacho and pasta, but the two different fish main courses were only very good. Prior three visits over the past few years were better.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat food, drinks, wine, great food, drinks, wine, etc as usual and excellant service5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMI recommendVery good service and good food. I recommend both for romantic dinner as well for a group of friends.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Restaurant!Amazing service - possibly the best I've ever had. Food is excellent - simple, beautifully executed, but not special. Wine list and cocktails and were great.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMJust a little slowThis was our second visit to Spruce, and the food has been great both times. Our server was very good, but the restaurant seemed understaffed. It took a long time to get our drinks, to get bread, and if you are refilling iced tea glasses, offer more ice. I think it just felt like there needed to be more help.
That said, the cheeseburger was one of the best I haver ever had. The beignets were also wonderful.5/16/2013 12:00:00 AMvery special and relaxed placeMy husband and I wanted to try a new SF restaurant during our weekend stay in the city. This place is delightful to say the least. They treat you like a king, and make you feel very special. At the same time, there is something very laid back about the place. It feels super comfy. When I think about it, it is probably the right amount of noise, perfect colors and lighting, wonderful service, chairs that would be good enough for royalty. And above all, the food is out of this world! Squash pasta appetizer with sage and caramelized pecans, Sonoma chicken and pork tenderloin, all delicious beyond words. Finally, we were impressed with their tea and coffee selection and quality. We skipped wine and dessert, but we'll definitely be back!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMSmiles all aroundWe were lucky to get a table for 8 on a Friday night. This really is a neighbourhood gem. Spruce oozes class. It's a restaurant that could compete on a world class level. The interior is beautiful. The food was wonderful. I had the burrata for starters, it was the perfect temperature and texture. Then on to the Duck breast which is quite possibly the best I've had. We tried the Brown wine, and the next day went out and bought it. Amazing. The only minor negative things were the desert - the banana split (yep we ordered for the table) or the bread weren't all that special. Spruce I'll be back. It was a fantastic evening.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMA very topnotch restaurant.A very topnotch restaurant. Staff was very nice and attentive.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of San Francisco's very bestSecond visit within a week. Excellent Food, great but very expensive wine list, and terrific service. Atmosphere very enjoyable yet sophisticated.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous charcuterie plate.Fabulous charcuterie plate. On a Monday night this place was packed.
They had reservations for about 50 patrons, and 175 showed up over
the course of the night! Great energy - lucky to have been part of the evening!5/6/2013 12:00:00 AM:)super good evening, fine food .. did not expect the restaurant was in the middle of a residential area. seems dishes came a little too quickly in succession also was too dark in the room.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGood food, good ambiance, relaxed,coGood food, good ambiance, relaxed, comfortable and I'd do it again readily5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMSpruce never disappoints.Spruce never disappoints. It's one of my go-to spots for a special occasion. The food and wine is always fantastic, especially the burger - only $16!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMMissed the sweetbreadsExcellent service. After my last visit here I was left with memories of some of the best bites of food I have ever had in their sweetbread and linguine dish putting this restaurant at the very top of my favorites list in SF. This time it didn't blow my mind in the same way but was very good.4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMThe salmon was exceptionallyThe salmon was exceptionally well done! The flesh was so smooth, creamy, and soft and the skin so perfectly crisp - not the usual overly dried fish you typically get at American restaurants. Probably the best salmon I've had in the city! The only dish I was neutral about was the black cod wrapped in kale. The textures were pleasing but the flavors there were unremarkable. But aside from that, I can wax rhapsodic about the beet soup and pomelo mousse. Lovely presentations, flavors, aromas, textures. And the lunch pre-fixe is a phenomenal deal.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazing drinks and the foodAmazing drinks and the food was all around fantastic. Prices were very in-line with the quality delivered. Don't miss the specialty drink list, their bar tending is top notch. Would definitely recommend.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMHusband ordered the night'sHusband ordered the night's special, waygu new york style steak $75. Steak quality was nothing to call home about, but the sauce was delicious. Wife had the sea bass, and it was quite salty. Shared the meat platter, it was good variety. Service was excellent.4/11/2013 12:00:00 AMStarting with the reservationistStarting with the reservationist all the way thru to the person that clears your plates the people are outstanding, professional, friendly and knowledgeable. They make you feel like you are the ,most important person in the restaurant. The fact that the food matches the service makes this a 4 star restaurant.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is one of the restaurantsThis is one of the restaurants we always come to when we are in San Francisco. (This review site doesn't work very well!)4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMthe place to dine in delightTim Stannard does a lovely job. The waitstaff and manager are so professional and friendly. I had such a lovely experience with food and ambiance there recently!
SPorter4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGotta try this!Went there for Easter brunch and had a great time. Food and service was excellent. He highlighted the menu, made suggestions and was there when we needed him!
I noticed he had great instinct.
The food...spectacular!3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMA Magical Experience ...Sometimes, places are good. Sometimes, places are great. Then, there are those times when you have such an amazing experience that the only way to describe it is 'magical.' I go to Spruce about three times per year, and it's always a sophisticated experience. Last Thursday, I took my older sister for the first time and we left feeling like Hollywood actresses! From the duel valets opening our car doors, to the gracious, lovely women at the front who sat us early at a prime table, to our excellent waiter who offered insights without sounding pushy, the whole evening was beyond fabulous. At the end, the (again) lovely hosts helped us into our coats, the manager swung the large door open, our car was waiting and we left feeling like A-Listers!3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMI have had now had two mediocreI have had now had two mediocre experiences at Spruce. The first was a private dinner - food came out cold and too much time elapsed between courses. The second was for a birthday dinner. I arrived hoping to "undo" the last visit, but was again unimpressed. The food does not come out hot enough, there were LONG gaps between courses (sitting for 20+ minutes without anyone checking in or clearing plates), and quite frankly, the flavors were weak. The only real positive was the ambiance...
After all of the great things I had heard about Spruce, I wanted to like it. Needless to say, I won't be back.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMSubdued lighting, just theSubdued lighting, just the right distance between tables, not too noisy--all of these features make this restaurant a good place to enjoy conversation as well as their wonderful food. We shared mussels as a first course, perfectly flavored with a subtle tomato and white wine sauce. Our main dishes were excellent. We agreed that the duck breast was among the most tender of its kind we had tasted. The service was highly professional--friendly and helpful but not intrusive. Will definitely return to this restaurant.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMMy wife and I had previouslyMy wife and I had previously been to Spruce only for lunch. At lunch the room is relatively quiet and pleasant and the food is excellent. At dinner this time the service as before was outstanding, very pleasant and solicitous and the food was very good. It was noisier than we had expected from our past experience but the room was full of people having a good time. We highly recommend this restaurant.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, Spruce was delightful. As always, Spruce was delightful. Beautifully decorated, very professional, helpful waitstaff, interesting items on the menu. Delicious! A favorite of ours!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMMy mother chose Spruce toMy mother chose Spruce to celebrate her birthday. The restaurant recommended a lovely florist and the flowers were placed on the table. I had pre-ordered Spruce's signature "beignets" for my mother's dessert and they arrived promptly after dinner (the beignets were absolutely delicious by the way). The staff couldn't have been nicer to us! Thank you!3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were celebrating a birthdayWe were celebrating a birthday and they made the birthday person feel very special. A birthday card on the table and special desert.3/11/2013 12:00:00 AMI can't say enough about Spruce.I can't say enough about Spruce. How have I not been here before? it was amazing, we had the burrata as an app, cod for main and beignets for dessert. The food was impeccable, the service was beyond attentive, but not over-bearing, the atmosphere is very sophisticated and yet not to snobby. I can't wait to go back! Maybe next time, I'll hang out at the super hip bar.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding. Superb food foodOutstanding. Superb food food very efficiently. Staff were extremely knowledgable. We were going to a play, had five courses and everything was timed perfectly.3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMYes, they have a notable wineYes, they have a notable wine list. It is the largest I have ever seen - with prices to match. Four cocktails were cheaper.12/27/2012 12:00:00 AM
