Diner Reviews
  • "I asked the waiter what the most popular dishes were. I ordered two he recommended and both were terrible. One was a grilled lettuce salad with a yogurt dressing. not bad, but not great. and the other was a ratatouille lasagna. So bland and flavorless. If these were the best the place could offer I have worries. And if the waiter recommended these two just to move them, then I worry even more that a place like this has these kinds of practices. The best part of the meal was the cranberry bread with the cinnamon honey butter - and that was free! service was nice but recommendations were horrible."

  • "Choose a single cheese for dessert and you will be treated to an incredible presentation plus delightful bread and crackers. On our most recent visit the presentation included figs, a honeycomb, pistachios, marcoma almonds! All for just $6."

  • "Nicely balanced dishes , subtle diverse notes , rich palette . Ordered a wine with a bit to much sugar (riesling) to my liking, when asked waiter immediatly got to taste a few other options . Cool . Felt pampered . Best dinner I had in 2 weeks Pacific coasting."

  • "We were seated right away at a very nice table. Our server was really great and pointed out some good options on the menu. All the food was delicious."

  • "I had high hopes for Spruce. Our biggest complaint is that the service was nonexistant. Our waiter would be gone for long lengths of time. We were brought some very nice bread. But, we were never offered any more when that was gone. The corn soup was the best I have ever had. But everything else was just average. We won't go back."

  • "Spruce's is definitely one of the finest restaurants around. The quality of the service and food is really excellent. In fact there was a mistake on our order, which could have been my fault, but they put everything straight quickly and pleasantly. For such a restaurant I was surprised that the noise level was as high as it was, but it was not excessive. The wine list is broad and has some excellent but rather expensive choices, and although the list is long; there are notable omissions, in my mind. The service and food was actually better than some of the BEST places in London that I have eaten at. We will be back."

  • "Had a great night out. Although we had a reservation, we really wanted to sit at the bar and try the burgers that we had heard so much about. We were celebrating our 41st anniversary and after having celebrated our 40th at a well known top notch restaurant which we found stuffy the year before this time celebrated the way we really wanted to. The hostesses and bar staff accommodated us and we had a great time! Great cocktails and great burgers!"

  • "OMG!!!! So good!! Had a lovely dinner on our anniversary. They even had a card at the table wishing us a Happy Anniversary. The food was fabulous.....we both had the ribeye steak and shared a starter of the scallops. Both my husband and I said that we haven't had as good a dinner as this in a long time. Waiter was delightful and everyone from the front desk on wished us a happy anniversary."

  • "Our family enjoyed all aspects of the dining experience! The roasted corn soup was excellent as well as all the entrees. Expect to lay down some serious dough."

  • "It's not very often I go out to lunch, but this was a great place to have a fancy lunch with a good friend."

  • "In many ways, you can't fault it. The food is undoubtedly good and well presented. But given the limited choice of menu (not in itself a bad thing) and the price, we would have expected it to be outstanding, which it wasn't. There were no "Ooh, oh my! you have to try mine moments"."

  • "Beautiful decor and sophisticated spot for any occasion. Great attention to detail from the ordering process to wine selection and service of meal. Plates artfully present the food and we enjoyed an exquisite meal."

  • "Simple and elegant harvest menu for lunch. My only comment would be that it's just a bit too small. It needs either a little more protein or some grain. Overall - great experience as usual!"

  • "Spruce graciously accommodated our party of 7 plus stroller. All the food was delicious as expected but nothing stood out as exceptional. The description for each dish has the flavor mix they are trying to achieve but none ever achieved that mix due to small amounts of the flavors. Ex: the turnip soup had olive tapenade and another flavor included but these were small drops in the bottom of the bowl and once the soup was poured those flavors were never noted in the soup. Everything had lovely presentation and portions are reasonable as higher priced restaurants go. Our concern was the noise level on Thursday night was extremely high, we had difficulty having discussion across the table. You are allowed to bring your own wine with fee."

  • "Excellent food, very knowledgeable server - Nick (knew the wines and pairings extensively). The restaurant has a very sophisticated feel without coming across as pretentious. Well worth the trip from our hotel on nob hill."

  • "I was in town for a week and wanted to try a SF Michelin starred restaurant for lunch. I couldn't have been more satisfied! Great looking place, top-notch service, incredible food and very reasonable prices. So good that I actually went back the next day! Oh, best burger i've ever had by the way!"

  • "This place was beautiful. Everyone there makes you feel right at home. The food was amazing. The peanut butter delights they give youbl before you leave is to die for. If u could change something it would be the lighting. I felt the ambiance was a bit dark and needed to be a little lighter."

  • "Having dined here in the past, the expectations were high. The last visit was memorable. This last seemed to miss the mark. The salmon although good required the dinner remove the skin; should have been crisp and the thick sections underdone. The halibut was ...unmemorable. It was bland. The beet salad was unremarkable and a challenge to understand...mixed flavors. Nice restaurant, great service, so so food. Last visit 2 years ago great."

  • "Spruce is a fabulous spot for a special occasion or for a relaxing stop after work for a sandwich at the bar. Always a pleasure to spend time there, and one of the few restaurants serving great sweetbreads!"

  • "I went for dine about town lunch. Some items were intriguing like stone fruit gazpacho. Execution on the rib eye and halibut was perfect. I appreciate that the chef came to get feedback on the gazpacho. Desert was a cookie with cream. It was very good but I think a prix fix menu deserves a bit more complexity."

  • "Menu is short and everything is appealing. Perfectly cooked rib eye and delicious halibut poached in olive oil. Cozy location in Laurel Heights. Extensive wine list but an unpolished sommelier. "

  • "I have written a magnificent review a couple of months ago about the food and specially the service for this place. It's crazy how the service can ruin the experience! Our table barely got attention on Saturday! Not only because the restaurant was busy but because our server would dissapear in the kitchen or cared giving other tables attention! Clearly I tipped accordingly to make the point! Won't be back! "
