Diner Reviews
  • "Our family enjoyed all aspects of the dining experience! The roasted corn soup was excellent as well as all the entrees. Expect to lay down some serious dough."

  • "It's not very often I go out to lunch, but this was a great place to have a fancy lunch with a good friend."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "In many ways, you can't fault it. The food is undoubtedly good and well presented. But given the limited choice of menu (not in itself a bad thing) and the price, we would have expected it to be outstanding, which it wasn't. There were no "Ooh, oh my! you have to try mine moments"."

  • "Beautiful decor and sophisticated spot for any occasion. Great attention to detail from the ordering process to wine selection and service of meal. Plates artfully present the food and we enjoyed an exquisite meal."

  • "The Sunday night Spruce burger and flight of wine are my latest guilty pleasures. So great to have a quiet place to meet with friends for dinner before taking on the next work week."

  • "Our server Andy was amazing, he provided great information, service and was a joy to speak with! He had amazing recommendations from the menu."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Simple and elegant harvest menu for lunch. My only comment would be that it's just a bit too small. It needs either a little more protein or some grain. Overall - great experience as usual!"
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "Spruce graciously accommodated our party of 7 plus stroller. All the food was delicious as expected but nothing stood out as exceptional. The description for each dish has the flavor mix they are trying to achieve but none ever achieved that mix due to small amounts of the flavors. Ex: the turnip soup had olive tapenade and another flavor included but these were small drops in the bottom of the bowl and once the soup was poured those flavors were never noted in the soup. Everything had lovely presentation and portions are reasonable as higher priced restaurants go. Our concern was the noise level on Thursday night was extremely high, we had difficulty having discussion across the table. You are allowed to bring your own wine with fee."

  • "Excellent food, very knowledgeable server - Nick (knew the wines and pairings extensively). The restaurant has a very sophisticated feel without coming across as pretentious. Well worth the trip from our hotel on nob hill."

  • "I was in town for a week and wanted to try a SF Michelin starred restaurant for lunch. I couldn't have been more satisfied! Great looking place, top-notch service, incredible food and very reasonable prices. So good that I actually went back the next day! Oh, best burger i've ever had by the way!"

  • "Three of us celebrate our birthdays together every year. We chose Spruce this year. It was excellent..we sat in the small front room where it was quiet so we could even hear one another. One celebrant is 93 years old."

  • "This place was beautiful. Everyone there makes you feel right at home. The food was amazing. The peanut butter delights they give youbl before you leave is to die for. If u could change something it would be the lighting. I felt the ambiance was a bit dark and needed to be a little lighter."

  • "Lobster benedict, chicken hash, and the best beignets in the City. One of the best hidden brunches in SF."

  • "Don't hesitate - this is a great restaurant with excellent service and food!"

  • "Having dined here in the past, the expectations were high. The last visit was memorable. This last seemed to miss the mark. The salmon although good required the dinner remove the skin; should have been crisp and the thick sections underdone. The halibut was ...unmemorable. It was bland. The beet salad was unremarkable and a challenge to understand...mixed flavors. Nice restaurant, great service, so so food. Last visit 2 years ago great."

  • "One of my go to places for a great burger and fries. Other dishes have not been as consistent."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "Food was delicious and thoughtful. Great marriage of flavors. Service was excellent except for a remarkably long wait between courses. Waiter was unable to bring me a side of biscuits for some reason."

  • "Spruce is a fabulous spot for a special occasion or for a relaxing stop after work for a sandwich at the bar. Always a pleasure to spend time there, and one of the few restaurants serving great sweetbreads!"

  • "Wonderful restaurant! Highly recommend. The cocktails are amazing."
    Dined on 6/5/2014
  • "I went for dine about town lunch. Some items were intriguing like stone fruit gazpacho. Execution on the rib eye and halibut was perfect. I appreciate that the chef came to get feedback on the gazpacho. Desert was a cookie with cream. It was very good but I think a prix fix menu deserves a bit more complexity."

  • "Great food, wonderful ingredients and timing of dishes"

  • "Menu is short and everything is appealing. Perfectly cooked rib eye and delicious halibut poached in olive oil. Cozy location in Laurel Heights. Extensive wine list but an unpolished sommelier. "

  • "I have written a magnificent review a couple of months ago about the food and specially the service for this place. It's crazy how the service can ruin the experience! Our table barely got attention on Saturday! Not only because the restaurant was busy but because our server would dissapear in the kitchen or cared giving other tables attention! Clearly I tipped accordingly to make the point! Won't be back! "

  • "Everything about our dinner was perfection. Spruce is definitely my new favorite restaurant. I'm just sorry I didn't try it sooner!"

  • "We both had the Harvest menu with wine pairings for lunch......absolutely superb! Pea soup and scallop entree were outstanding and the desserts are divine! This is one of the very best places to dine in SF!"
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "We went to Spruce for lunch. I had the halibut and it was perfectly cooked and wonderful. My husband had the special that was a short rib ravioli. He devoured it. We also ordered the fries because theirs are the BEST!! Our waiter was attentive and very friendly. I have only been here for dinner in the past but, will definitely go again for lunch."
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "Good, not great for lunch. A bit pretentious. Food is good. Mussels were very good. I'd like more of a selection."
    Dined on 5/22/2014
  • "This was the second Spruce birthday party celebration with my wife and it was simply terrific. Our table was great plus service from Nick, our waiter, was attentive with Spruce provided a fun festive evening. We could not of asked for more…."
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "Average food. Awful desserts. Uninspired coffee service. Fumbled valet handoff between waiter and valet service. Overall amateur hour. Want premium perception but zero attention to detail. They must learn this is more about the total experience than just the ambiance. Lucky for them there is little competition in Presidio Hts. For anyone willing to venture out your money can be much better spent elsewhere."

  • "This is the place to go if you want super good service and good food, and that basic feeling that you're special. We have eaten here before, but this time it was our Wedding Anniversary. They gave us a romantic slightly private table, had a card wishing us a Happy Anniversary on the table when we arrived, and apart from the usual wonderful service and food, when it came to dessert, we were also presented with an extra dessert with Happy Anniversary in chocolate writing, yes we felt pretty special, we also had a guest with us, and they were pretty impressed too."

  • "We went to Spruce for an anniversary..and because we wanted to start with cocktails we sat at a comfortable table in the bar area. We had an early reservation which helped with the noise level..by the time we left it was quite busy and loud..we had access to both menus..the bar menu and the main menu which was perfect as we shared four different dishes..the mussels from Prince Edward Island were great as well as the Caesar salad. We followed those with steak tartar and a reginette made with an avocado sauce..quite delicious.. The wine list is extravagant..Alexandria our server was quite attentive... Would definitely return!"

  • "We had a delicious lunch at Spruce. The food was well prepared and quite good. However, it was very slow coming out of the kitchen - appetizer, main, and dessert took 1.5 hours total. Spruce is a generally dressy place - some men wear jackets, even ties, women nicely dressed."
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "I would have liked a menu with a few more choices."
    Dined on 5/15/2014
  • "Terrible terrible service. When you have to ask the Hostess to bring you dinner rolls, a wine list, and the wine you would like, you know the waiter is MIA as well as management. "
    Dined on 5/15/2014
  • "I would think twice before returning to Spruce if I were looking for good food! The chicken salad is rubbery and tasteless. The omelet was heavy and lacking in any subtlety. Even the desserts had a flavor that was off. No one seems to notice, however, as this place continues to be the hit of Pacific Heights. "
