We have been to Spruce twice now and each time have been blown away by the service. Attentive, helpful, and witty servers make the experience more enjoyable. This restaurant has 1 Michelin star and the food is exceptional. Notably, the mussels (we've had on both visits) and the burger surprisingly. I added the egg and bacon to my burger on the last visit and while I love the rich butteriness that an egg can provide the yolk and bun don't play well and it becomes a mess to eat. I'm not a huge wine fan but a look at the list on their website will give you an idea of how impressive their selection is, like War & Peace kind of impressive. Whether you like great food, wine, or cocktails Spruce is a must visit.

  • Great Food But Poor Service

We had a great meal here, but for as empty as the restaurant was at 1pm on Sunday afternoon, and for a nicer restaurant, you would think our server would have came to check on us more frequently. We were out of beverages for more than 10 minutes, and we could not get our waiter for over 20 minutes. Even the people next to us had a poor experience with the same waiter. I expect more at a place like Spruce. It was my first time, and I will likely not go back. Spruce gets 3 stars, but that's for the quality of the food and the ambiance.

From the time we stepped into the resturant to the very end.. It was top notch! They have an extensive wine list to choose from. The charcuterie plate was wonderful.. Tomato bisque ...creamy,, great presentation, I had the halibut ...done to perfection...we also had Sonoma chicken, steak medallions, and the cod dishes. All were raved about. Pear sorbetto... Peanut butter squares... I'm in heaven now. Considering the high ceilings, and full resturant, the noise level was relativity low. Low lighting, simple interesting decor you are given the feeling of a very intimate dinner even though you are a party of 5! Oh, I'll mention they Steam Iron the table cloth when setting up for the next customer...wow... Service was attentive, knowledgable!

We were looking for a nice lunch to celebrate a business success. While the food was very nicely done, the lack of service was quite a damper and become the primary subject of conversation. A 30 min wait order. We asked four different times for our cocktails and were assured each time that they were coming. A 20-30 min wait our first course came. We still didn't have our cocktails, bread, or wine. Finally our cocktails arrived . We asked about our wine. By now you know the drill. A 20 - 25 min wait for our main course came. The service overall was fairly formal. Spruce recognized that they weren't delivery and ended up analogizing and comping us for our drinks. We don't feel ripped off, but just very disappointed.

I left really disappointed. I had high expectations since they have a one star Michelin rating. Food was mediocre, uninspired and underseasoned. Service was odd, slow an inattentive. VERY pretentious explanation of the specials, with huge emphasis on "EXCLUSIVE", a bit much. The sommelier only addressed my husband, and only asked what he was having to eat. Didn't consider my food choices when recommending a bottle of wine. This restaurant panders to the wealthy neighborhood and I don't feel that it's a destination. There are many, many other restaurants that have much better food and service. I must say though, the place is very pretty and comfortable. A lot of style, not a lot of substance.

I was visiting SF on business, went to Spruce alone and asked the waiter to chose my meal for me. She spoke to the chef, and he prepared a five course "off menu" meal, with wine pairings just for me! I don't know if they thought I was a food critic, because they treated me like a God, even shaving slices of freshly imported truffle presented in a glass case right at my table. Every dish was an incredible surprise. The flavors made me giddy with joy, and the wine paring were soooooo perfect. The five course meal was $70, the wine pairing was $65 and I left a $100 tip. I would have left $1000 if I could. This was one of te best meals I've had in a long long time. EXCELLENT!!!!!

I have had lunch, dinner and drinks at Spruce in the past. They have a great looking dining room, good service and a great bar area. My last few experiences at lunch have been disappointing. The hamburger was over cooked, the Waldorf salad was a breast of chicken next to lettuce with old tasting dressing, the Cesar salad tasted like just romaine with no dressing or taste---all for hefty prices. They used to have better food for lunch, so hope this gets fixed.

I suspect that Spruce is an awesome place for dinner. I fell in love with the soft deep brown decor the first time I ever saw it at a reception years ago but didn't have the chance to eat there till this past Sunday. Service was lovely and the beignets were out of this world. But my polenta with jidori egg and homemade pastrami and summer squash was way, way too salty. I couldn't finish the pastrami and pushed it to the side as it so fought with the sweetness of the polenta and the rounded deep flavor of the rich golden jidori egg. The potato and duck confit frittata, on the other hand, was bland in comparison. I would love to give this restaurant a try for dinner, but it would not be at the top of my list for Sunday brunch.

My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary at Spruce based on a friend's recommendation and had a wonderful experience. Note, the wine list is extensive. In fact, we were able to order a bottle of Kosta Browne single vineyard Pinot that I have never been able to buy direct although I've been on their allocation list for 7yrs running (made it more fun to drink knowing we wont have it again anytime soon). Additionally, Spruce provided at no charge, two small sample plates (appetizer and dessert) which really highlights their focus on providing an exceptional dining experience. From a menu perspective, strongly recommend the scallops first course..was the star of the meal (outside of the wine).

The prix-fixe menu for lunch is great and totally worth it, I highly recommend to go there for lunch. However, my husband was not pleased with the entree on the menu and therefore had to order plates a la carte. The small quantities for the high prices made us lower the rating from 1 star. Maybe, they should propose an alternative. The place is really nice and service is awesome (totally deserves its 5 stars) !!

Was a lovely evening as always, but should have gone with the recommendation by the waiter of the pork - which my husband had and was delicious. I had the cod and loved the sublte truffle flavor but I am not a fan of yellow and green wax beans - especially when they are squeaking against my teeth. So nothing wrong with dish - just not a personal favorite of mine. Where some people hate broccoli - I dislike beans! They forgot to add the $100 bottle of wine to our bill - which we brought to their attention and they were shocked and appreciative that we did.

This was the second time my husband and I had dinner at Spruce and again, the food was delicious. The restaurant is buzzy without being too noisy and has a nice vibe. The only thing I would change is making the lights a little brighter as it is even hard to read the menu with lotsof people putting the flashight from their phone on to see. The service is very good and seating is comfortable. Everything thing we ordered was delicous and the servings were not too big.

I think having a restaurant that is essentially gourmet American fare in a city as eclectic and ethnic as San Francisco almost immediately puts one at a disadvantage as far providing diners with a memorable experience. I love food from all over the globe and have been fortunate enough to travel and dine in a lot of world class destinations. That said, I think my wife and I came to Spruce not expecting to be impressed to the degree we were. I mean, how GREAT can gourmet American fare be? Spruce delivers on all fronts. The food, service, ambiance, and pace were essentially flawless. The only reason I didn't give them straight 5 stars is there was a very minor lapse in the wine service, but I'm almost just nit picking.

This was the second time dining at Spruce. The food is amazing, the wine list is ok with a marked lack of good California Wines. Each time we've visited the restaurant the waiter commented that he was once a Sommelier and can help with a good wine selection. Great if you have a good selection. The dining room is crowded and we were next to a wall with a table right behind my chair. The waiters constantly bumped into my chair. Not really a big deal but annoying. The food makes the visit to Spruce worth the trip.

wanted to celebrate a friends birthday at a Michelin starred restaurant. We were not disappointed. Our waiter was attentive without being overly solicitous. We had corn soup and scallops to start. The duck, and the black cod for entree. All tasted lovely. We ordered 2 desserts and could have been satisfied with only one. The beignets (8 of them!) were delicious. The chocolate cake was also delicious and a regular portion size. Wine list was extensive, (as well as expensive!) more wines by the glass would have been appreciated, but there was enough to choose from.

How on earth did Spruce receive a Michelin star is beyond my grasp. We had a corn soup that tasted like anything but corn. The salad was meh. The black cod was blah. The “Rib-Eye” was a “Filet Mignon” not a shred of marble in the entire steak The cheese plate and ice cream trio were both mediocre at best. I asked for a Grey Goose martini, they said they don’t carry Grey Goose, they said that they have Chopin and I said fine, they served me Stolichnaya. Wine by the glass pours were without any exaggeration no more than 4 oz. Service although very polite was poor. Final bill for lunch two was over $200.00 before gratuity. Needless to say we WON’T be returning.
