  • "High marks for - location, ambiance, food and service!"

  • "Had a most memorable evening celebrating a special occasion. Our dinner companions are major foodies and were raving at each course. Highly recommend the scallops to start and the gem salad was quite nice. All the entrees were exceptionally balanced and delicious. Service was excellent and ambience lovely with a mature crowd. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Spruce was one of best restaurants that we have gone to in years. Delicious food, excellent service and wonderful ambience. What more could you ask for in a restaurant? It will be our spot for special celebrations from now on!"

  • "We celebrated a birthday brunch and truly enjoyed our dining experience. The mimosa's were delicious and the atmosphere was festive. So happy to have the opportunity to try this neighborhood gem. Would definitely go back. The only negative is that we had to pay for the bread."

  • "I came to Spruce for a birthday celebration and had a wonderful experience. The staff was polite, attentive, and gave excellent recommendations. The food was spectacular!!"

  • "Excellent cocktails at the bar while waiting for our table. Seated in the library, love this room and the fireplace. Food was well executed as always, our choices that evening were seafood. We dine at Spruce with friends or just the two of us often, we've not been disappointed with the food or experience over the years."

  • "We went there for lunch. Food was elegantly presented, but not particularly special and some portions large, others skimpy. The cheese plate dessert had 3 little pieces of cheese, plus some fruit. On the other hand, the plate of beignets was towering. The menu was all over the place, from ravioli to an omelet to a burger to roast halibut. I could only find one entree that attracted me. It was good, but the two sides turned out to be more like garnishes. Low noise level but the dark brown decor made for a boring atmosphere. Comfy seating. Service as expected in a relatively fancy restaurant. Needs punching up of decor and consistency in the food. Was not able to accommodate a request for gluten-free crackers."

  • "we had been here for brunch. The beignets are to die for. The other dishes were also pretty good. The most important being that none of them were very overwhelming. The quantity, flavor everything was in perfect balance. This is place is not bad for brunch although I feel there are better places in sf for brunch."

  • "From the greeting at the front desk to the manager's recognition of my birthday with to-go chocolate chip cookies, our evening at Spruce was fantastic. Great atmosphere. Wonderful service from our waiter...friendly, efficient, knowledgeable.....and the entire waitstaff. The oxtail consomme was divine, as was the butter poached lobster. 5 stars!"

  • "We dined early on a Saturday evening (6:30) but sevrice was so slow that we did not finish until 10:30. Our waiter was embarrassed by this so I think the problem was in the kitchen. Also, noise level in main dining room became impossible for conversation by 9:00. I will not return for 6 months hoping you can deal with these issues and get back to the wonderful place you used to be."

  • "Split the steak for 3 with 2 others. I ordered Med. Rare and got top piece med rare and those underneath end cuts . Our server did not serve us as he was busy and I probavly got so some else's cut. They apologized and gave us complimentary dessert. I thought it was overpriced and was not impressed with the menu."

  • "I took a friend out for her birthday. On Open Table I had written that it was a birthday dinner and given it little thought. When we arrived we were given a table in the most quiet part of the restaurant. The waiter was very generous when we ordered our second glasses of champagne. Dinner was terrific and we were able to get an extra order of the wonderful potatoes when we did not like one of the accompanying vegetables. Then came the birthday dessert with the candle. It was good and done so nicely. I would certainly return."

  • "Ok food in an unexpected setting. Leather chairs, dim lighting, pretty formal ambiance in a restaurant right in the middle of quiet residential street. Food was forgettable, desserts stood out."

  • "We were at Spruce with one more couple to celebrate March 8th International Women's Date. Had the table at the small room with a fireplace! Sooooo romantic! Super elegant just right for the occasion ! The name of our waiter is Hossif. He was super professional ! Food is exceptional , and presentation is amazing! It's expensive but is worth every penny! Thank you, Spruce!!"

  • "A truly epic dining event! One of our all time favorites in the city. The ambience, service and best of all, Cuisine, was outstanding. Delighful charcuterie platter and perfect roast chicken with chorizo and fava beans. The short rib was melt-in-your mouth and the wine list - especially champagnes - was thoughtfully collected. Save room for dessert asthe beignets are the best we have had outside New Orleans."

  • "We love Spruce because is consistently has great food, excellent service, and you can enjoy the energy of the restaurant, but you can have a quiet/ private conversation - and hear each other comfortably. Don't change a thing!"

  • "As a big fan of the restaurant, I was modestly underwhelmed by the food this visit. Good, but not up to their own standards."

  • "I took my wife out for her 65th birthday along with my adult children and their significant partners. I had heard about Spruce and wanted a first class experience for my wife's birthday. The wait staff, food and overall experience exceeded my expectations. Everything was OUTSTANDING, I plan to return in the very near future."

  • "Spruce is one of those places that will always offer a great evening out, yet it lacked a little on this visit. The wine list is remarkable, but we were hard put to find a bottle of sauvignon blanc for less than $55. Same story for the red. The food was good, if "fussed over." Lots of different and pleasing textures, arranged very prettily, but without any outstanding flavors. There was just a tablespoon of sauce for a hearty portion of perfectly roasted pork tenderloin. To be memorable, it needed something else -- like a fine sauce. The beautifully roasted fish of one of my table companions was also served with the merest dollop of sauce. These deficiencies could have been easily remedied if the servers had been more in evidence."

  • "Excellent neighborhood restaurant. Service is first rate. Only objection is to the breath taking prices."
    Dined on 3/2/2014
  • "We had a business lunch at Spruce. We needed a quiet place to talk without being overheard. The food and the service were great and we were left alone appropriately to have our discussion."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "Had 8:45 res, seated an hour late. Pre-fix meal @ $140 per which was Steak or Lobster that was pretty ordinary. ~$500 for 2 with wine and nothing memorable except the long wait. Overbooking is not unusual, but this was absurd. Wait staff did there best."

  • "From food to service to wine to decor, I could've have asked for a more perfect place to celebrate my birthday with my 3 closest girlfriends. Food was exceptional & paired exquisitely with wines by the sommelier, and service was nothing short of impressive (we had the same server- David- who remembered us from our previous visit months back & he proceeded to recall details of our exact conversation regarding cocktails that was completely unexpected). I can't wait until the next visit!"

  • "From the way you are greeted at the front, to the seamless service throughout the meal, to paying the bill, Spruce was one of the best dining experiences I've had in several years in SF. The staff was professional, knowledgeable, and not over bearing. Food was outstanding! The complimentary gougeres were delicious as was the bread selection. Appetizers (beet salad, carrot ravioli, cauliflower scallops, charcuterie), Entrees (lobster, ribeye, sonoma chicken, bass, pork tenderloin), and Dessert (beignets) were all incredibly well done...perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, quality ingredients, appealing to the eye, and delicious!"

  • "Perfect dining experience from impeccable service to perfectly portioned/seasoned/prepared food despite being seated late for our reservation (not the restaurant's fault - dining experience is so pleasant diners tend to take an inordinate amount of time so it's difficult to gauge reservation windows)"

  • "The beer food pairing and the knowledge of our server made the evening one to remember"

  • "We had an excellent Valentine's Dinner at Spruce and definitely recommend it for special occasions. It was extremely expensive but you get what you pay for especially on Valentine's."

  • "Mediocre food not deserving of a michelin star. Extremely loud. Would not recommend."

  • "Me and my girlfriend had reservations for 10:15 PM. We were not sat till 11:10 PM, almost an hour after our reservation time. The food was gross to say the least. The only decent part which I enjoyed was desert. You definitely do NOT get your money'a worth. I paid 392 dollars for a dinner I didn't even touch. Would NOT recommend, sorry."

  • "Have had dinner here quite a few times. Normally very good food and service. This evening was very poor in most aspects. Had reservations. Had to wait almost 1 hour for our table. The restaurant was completely overbooked which I am sure contributed to the poor evening."

  • "There's nothing not to like about Spruce. Food is excellent, service is attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere is elegant."

  • "Spruce offers the most attentive yet unpretentious service in San Francisco, with a first-class menu, an extensive top-flight wine list both by the bottle and by the glass, and the best bar burgers anywhere. Instead of a table int he dining room, ask for the table at the back of the bar area by the 15-foot-high glass-panel wine cellar."
